JACK GOES CONFIDENTIAL: ‘Suicide Squad’ Delivers—And then some!

maxresdefaultI’ll be honest with you…

I’ve never been much into superhero comics or the movies that have been based on them.

But I did like DEADPOOL (a lot) this past February!

Disney’s Marvel Studios seems to have the commercial lock on these characters of late.

Warner Brothers’ DC Comics? Not so much.

(The last example of that was their BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE which seemed to disappoint the faithful in March.)

But not to fear!

Warner Brothers unleashes its quirky anti-hero battalion this weekend—and these dudes are super bad.

They’re the SUICIDE SQUAD and there is really no need for a backstory to enjoy it.

The first act of the film pretty well takes care of that.

The squad is a group of imprisoned super-villains—the worst of the worst—recruited by a secret government agency to execute dangerous Block-Ops missions.

In charge of the secret operation is U.S. intelligence officer Viola Davis who offers a deal to these scumbags they can’t refuse:

The more they help—the lighter their sentences will be.

2628And so this punk rock-like group of America’s worst misfits sets out to kick butt and whatever else they stumble upon in the process.

Leading the team in this DC extended universe is Will Smith as Deadshot.

There’s Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag, El Diablo and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc—and Scott Eastwood (not to mention a few surprises.)

But make no mistake, it’s Margot Robbie as sexy but crazed Harley Quinn who steals the show.

Then we’ve got Jared Leto as psychopathic super villain, the Joker!

While he pops up in only limited scenes throughout the film’s 130 minute running time he does make an impression.

And he’s something to behold.

Oscar winner Jared Leto here follows in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger but definitely puts a NEW meaning on bizarre in SUICIDE SQUAD.

Warner Brothers allegedly  re-shot some scenes for the movie earlier this year.

The re-shoots supposedly added more heart and humor to the proceedings.

From my viewpoint it was money will spent because this thing fires on ALL cylinders.

It’s the last tentpole-blockbuster of the summer season as the SUICIDE SQUAD could die trying—with nothing to lose.

But wouldn’t that prevent a sequel?

Early box office tracking has the movie opening somewhere between $125 to $ 150 million in North American ticket sales.

SUICIDE SQUAD opens in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D and in other large premium screen formats.

My grade: B

Huh, seems like you are one of the outlier reviewers on this one, Jurgen. Most of them found it to be a mess that suffered from bigwig rewrites and re-shoots.

Thought the re-writes/re-shoots actually helped. And the ‘punk-rock’ music trax fit in quite well.
Sure liked it better than WB’s “Batman v. Superman’ earlier this summer.
And our full house preview audience that I saw it with seemed to get into it in a big way.
So there—and I usually don’t get into ‘men in tights’ very much…….

  2. Sam The Lion says:

No doubt the Millennial answer to “Citizen Kane”.

    • jack p. says:

No doubt. And WB’s has a whole slew of them-there DC goodies in the pipeline for the next few years.
      Goodie……
