Hearne: Tennessee Columnist Warns Titans, Chiefs Were Better

Sure the Tennessee Titans  beat the Chiefs this past November…

But only where the final score is concerned.

Because in virtually every key measurable way, the Chiefs mopped up the floor with Nashville’s beloved Titans,Tennessean columnist Gentry Estes writes.

“They know they can beat these Kansas City Chiefs because they’ve done it before…(but) The Titans got lucky that day…” Gentry says. “The Chiefs largely controlled the game. They sacked Tannehill four times. They outgained the Titans 530 yards to 371. They had nearly 38 minutes of possession time, went 7-for-14 on third downs and totaled 28 first downs to the Titans’ 19…

“It was a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of game that fell in the Titans’ favor when the statistics suggest that it shouldn’t have.

“Most ominous of all for the Titans: Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, in his first game back from a two-week absence caused by a knee injury, looked a little rusty at times and still threw for 446 yards. That is the second-best game total of Mahomes’ career, and it was the sixth-highest for any quarterback during the NFL’s regular season.”

Gentry’s bottom line:

“:What the Chiefs were able to do in Nashville was a recipe to cause trouble for these red-hot Titans in Kansas City.” he writes. “It showed that the Chiefs and Mahomes have the capability to overwhelm the Titans in a way the Patriots and Ravens could not. And that’s not theoretical. It happened.”

“Sure the Tennessee Titans beat the Chiefs this past November… But only where the final score is concerned.”

    – no one thinks they should even bother play, might as well just toss rosters and past results afield, call it a day (loser can use the same rationalization above, again.)

Sometimes a great notion: AFL Championship Game January 4, 1970, Oakland

The powerful Raiders offense vs the popgun Chiefs same not dissimilar circumstance.
MVP Daryle Lamonica QB of an OAK team a pro football best 12-1-1 and coming off a post season divisional round win vs HOU 56-7, Lamonica’s 6 td passes in 3 quarters.

The Chiefs backed into post season, second-best beneficiaries an one-year only special ‘wildcard (Titans 2019) format.’ KC squeaked by the defending ‘World Champion’ Jets 13-7 in New York – Chiefs about to face a team they hadn’t beaten in Oakland since ’66.

No one expected Chiefs to win – not even in Kansas City: Star & Times both forecast a Raiders victory and by more than the 5-point line predicted Las Vegas (in 1971 course, playing at home, Chiefs were 3-point favorites over the Dolphins too, but…)

Raiders favorites, playing Superbowl entry a third consecutive year, winners of 7 the last 8 games vs KC – ‘Silver & Black’ already had their bags packed for New Orleans.

KC 17 @OAK 7 final reason they don’t play the games newspaper. Local pundits had been correct a half century ago, Chiefs would still be ‘waiting till next year’ an 60th.

Kerouac has his fingers crossed the Chiefs… 😉

  2. I Don't Give a F says:

I don’t want to jinx the Chiefs by predicting one way or the other. My biggest worry is the Titans/Henry score early and often causing KC to play too tight to mount a come back. Shoot, did I just jinx KC anyway?

    • admin says:

Ah well, what’s a Chiefs fan to do?

Besides, isn’t jinxing the equivalent of a black cat crossing your path or walking under a ladder?

      Try this possible cure:

“Jinx” is also a term used when two people say the same thing at the same time and the person who says jinx first makes the other person not speak until somebody says his or her name. The only prevention for this state is to yell the word “buttercup” after the jinx.”

      Allow me: Buttercup!

      There…all better now?

  3. Kerouac says:

Kerouac’s crossed fingers – and the luck of the swiss – made the difference. Next stop – Superbowl – alas, likely a loss, my opine nod 50 years of futility, and the worst ‘name’ post season coach in the NFL.

SF or GB immaterial, will go with either as they are the better teams. Still, as the ‘best team’ doesn’t always win, so which NFL team will claim this years * is anyone’s guess.

Jets last legit Championship pro football as Tigers MLB ’68 – before over-expansion and easy access post season came into being both sports since, beneficiaries age of expanded teams, games and formats to aid entrance the post season – and of course rule changes which have sullied the game – since the bulk said began in the 1970’s.

How great would it be to watch GB beat the KC again, just as they did 53 years ago? No more so than watching SF do the same (wonder who Steve Bono – author of ‘the worst restaurant in SF is better than the best in KC) would root for?)

Either way, Kerouac will be here to lead the KCC faithful in commentary per the usual!

    • admin says:

That mean, you’re throwing in the towel and hopping aboard the Chiefs bandwagon?

      • Kerouac says:

No, that ship modern-day sports illegitimacy sailed decades ago, as described above. Between over-expansion and part and parcel watered-down teams, rule changes aid stats/one side (offense) is no more than passing of time circa century 21, just keeps getting worse.

As the undefeated Kerouac tied Marciano’s 49-0 mark, one year ago, will go for the win a perfect 50-0… as every record is meant to fall, so shall the swiss chiefs – which is to say – ‘I left, my heart (me and Bono) in San Francisco… Green Bay is also quite lovely this time the year, so I hear those fans of the ‘greatest franchise’ in NFL history, Title-town USA.

Am counting on you come through, swiss… ‘wait till next year’ part 2020, verse 51!’

  4. Kerouac says:

    SF vs KC

49ers score 2 more points than the swiss chiefs today, give up 4 points fewer defense same. 49ers 6 points better, and they get 1 more point for having beaten the superior opponent GB compared TEN.

Kerouac will cross fingers once more as he did today for the ‘wait till next year’ gang, but it won’t be enough. No home field advantage in play Superbowl 54, thus, as such:

The streets of San Francisco may be lined with homeless and excreta, but is also home to ‘Champions’ aplenty 3x Giants, 3x Warriors and 5x 49ers – ‘The City by the Bay’ will welcome home its 6th Lombardi Trophy in as many appearances, winning by 7 points:

    SF 34 KC 27

    • admin says:

K Man, gotta disagree on what I see as an obvious point…

And that’s that Green Bay was a far inferior team to San Fran, Tennessee AND the Chiefs.

Rendering your rational devoid of value.

Moving right along, I think the Chiefs will have their hands full with the 49ers. That’s been obvious to even the least astute football followers.

So, anything can happen…but it was more than obvious that Green Bay was way out of their league today BEFORE the opening kickoff.

  5. Kerouac says:

Everyone has an opinion – fact is, GB is better than TENN at every position save three… which is why the 49ers beating the Packers in the fashion they did spells doom for our swiss chiefs. As stated in an earlier post, HOU, TENN and SF all beat KC 2019 (Texans and Titans both had the swiss beaten in post season as well, reason they didn’t hold on due nothing more than the home field advantage.) Neutral site, 49ers should win it all.

    😎

    • admin says:

That’s one of the silliest rationalizations I’ve ever read, K Man…

And don’t forget I edited Craig for nearly a decade!

First of all, losing to those three teams was meaningless, as proved out thus far by the Chiefs reaching the Super Bowl.

The 49ers loss was a preseason game…you serious about that being meaningful?

The Houston loss was basically a squeaker at an early point in the season where an all-new Chiefs defense was still coming together. Shoot they lost to Indy the week before…you forgot to point that one out.

Thirdly, as pointed out by the Tennessean columnist I quoted, the Chiefs dominated Tennessee in that game and lost at the end. Hey, teams are gonna lose games.

I think the 49ers could easily win. As could the Chiefs.

At this point, the two teams are arguably the NFL’s best.

My suggestion: Leave the past in the past and get your head back into the present and future. Worshipping at the alter of heroes past – at the expense of missing out on the fun to be had by trying to keep at least a little bit current – is a losing strategy.

      Life is to be enjoyed!

All that glitters is not exclusively to be found by re-living history at the expense of assuming a dour attitude about all things current.

  6. Kerouac says:

“That’s one of the silliest rationalizations I’ve ever read, K Man…”

    – thank you… will be here all week/tip your waiters 😀

“The 49ers loss was a preseason game…you serious about that being meaningful?”

    – yes… ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies. Look back to my post followed that game, and Kerouac said he saw all he needed to re: the swiss chiefs defense, likelihood for success in 2019 when the 49ers – on their opening drive of the season – cut through that ‘starting’ chiefs defense like they were, well… swiss cheese. See no reason change my opinion said, still. That anyone can win a game… will have to consider that, future.

… ok, gave it due consideration: will go with the 49ers, by 7, Superbowl 54 😯

As to your “suggestion” HC, to each their own… between all the legitimate rationale I’ve previously enumerated re: the sorry state NFL century 21 as sports world other (MLB scandal cheating/sign stealing, NBA adverti$ing on jerseys etc.), is not much today’s athletics I find endearing; your mileage as others may/apparently does vary.
Did not write about it, castigate it, would be no better than those ‘wait till next year’.

To wit, my one time love for the Chiefs became nothing more than habit years ago, morphed did not watch last year’s Superbowl and will not watch this years as well.
‘Hate’ an descript not far off, only continued enjoyment watching the foibles swiss chiefs grown half a century duration; KC a chess player, tipped over/resignation.

Unbeknownst anyone, decided end 2018 that ‘2019’ would be my last to follow sports as it no longer deserved anything beyond contempt, continuing drama/antics players / owners/ fans sports every the clincher, choice affirming.

Cioran said “the optimism of utopians is depressing and merciless”…. couldn’t agree more. Some try point the idea ‘progress’ – Cioran points to history which he calls ‘the antidote of progress’… a man after Kerouac’s own heart.

Originally came to KCC for (as I stated long ago) for information and entertainment, having lived the KC area many years, many ago. You/others provided the info, CG as Kerouac the entertainment apologies the rest, none them compelling nor provocative.

A Chiefs win Kerouac’s as KCC’s loss, reading ‘between the lines’ (am not Kietzman), sobering takes mine prompt you give pause nod publishing them, feel free… heading that way myself regardless, going out still on top.

  7. KC Reader says:

Can we now stop pretending that the ’90’s Montana/Allen/Derrick Thomas Chiefs, with their one AFC championship game appearance and blowout loss were the pinnacle of team history? These are the good old days for the Chiefs.

    • admin says:

      Ton quote President Obama…

      Yes, we can!

At the same time, I don’t think you can ignore the potential a couple of those Marty teams had based on their win-loss records. For whatever reason, they just couldn’t manage to pull the trigger

      • I Don't Give a F says:

In hindsight Marty never really had a good enough QB to win in the playoffs, except for Gannon but for some reason Marty sat him for Grbac in that soul crushing 97 playoff loss to the Donkeys(still, Elway deserved to finally win a SB).
Montana was great, just a little too old and fragile to win against the Bills in freezing Buffalo in the 93 playoffs.
Now we’ve got Mahomes we’re the envy of every team in the league. If only Andy Reid would cut down on his cheeseburger diet he’d be around 5-10 more years to enjoy his wonder boy.

        • admin says:

Yep…looks pretty good so far, depending on two things:

If they don’t run out of money keeping some of the key players…like Chris Jones.

And secondly, if Mahomes stays healthy…we got a taste of his mortality twice this past season. Look at poor Alex Smith!

          • I Don't Give a F says:

This makes me wonder..I wonder how much Clark Hunt’s Chiefs go up in value if KC wins one or more Super Bowls?

          • admin says:

            Interesting point…

Looking down the road – even though it’s a small market tea – the Chiefs are looking pretty good long term, long as Mahomes stays healthy.

  8. Shawnster says:

Hearne-nice job trying to talk sense to Kerowacko. Most of us don’t bother because like the troll he is, and always will be, he just keeps changing what he says each week, denying he ever said it in the first place. Nobody has any time for what happened 50 years ago. We are right now, in the midst of one of the very best talents at the QB position the game has ever seen. It’s going to be a terrific career for Mr. Mahomes when all is said and done, and I for one, am enjoying every minute of it. The Chiefs struck gold when they traded up to grab him and now the world is starting to see that those of us who REALLY love football already know, Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in football!

    • admin says:

      No argument here…

The other thing about Special K which I thought was a reach was saying Green Bay was superior to the 49ers in all but three positions…

Sheesh, who makes those kind of judgements from the wilds of their living room?

Little as I know, it seemed somewhat obvious that the Packers were going to get their clocks cleaned.

      Oh, well

  9. Kerouac says:

    From senior moments to adolescent…

Leave it to Beaver – er, Hamster – unable to stand out (or tall enough sans high-chair) converse re: football played before the year 2017 (HC… you need not only a minimum height limit in order comment here, but an IQ test to measure the depths his as those other do not qualify ride the KCC amusement blog without an accompanying adult…)
