Lefsetz: Is Patrick Mahomes The NFL’s Beatles?

Did you watch the Chiefs game?

I didn’t. I don’t think I’ve watched an iota of football this year, but I’ve read about Patrick Mahomes.

I’ve been following him ever since he broke into the league.

You see, he’s revolutionized the game.

The ground attack – the gut it out play of yore – is history. Now it’s all passing and Mahomes gave it the final push.

The Chiefs were down 21 after the first quarter, looked like it was over.

Who can come back from that, especially in a playoff game?

Well, Mahomes moved the ball down the field for 28 points in the second quarter. I would have liked to see that!

Reminded me of Steph Curry.

An unknown, at least to me, and then he scored 54 points in one game against the Knicks back in 2013 and I had to tune in. I had to see what all the mania was about.

Curry changed the game completely with his 3 point shots. He’s been a marvel to watch.

I’d given up on the NBA after wasting too much time watching back in the ‘90s, but Curry pulled me back in.

This is what we’re waiting for in the music business, an act that comes along and revolutionizes the game. That attracts the attention of not only those paying attention, but those who are not. We haven’t had that spirit in music for a very long time.

Maybe the last time it was Lady Gaga.

Well, although uber-talented, most people became aware of her antics, the penumbra surrounding the music, and one can argue that she didn’t make music that appealed to everybody until the remake of “A Star Is Born.”

Before her, or contemporaneous, depending on how you calculate, was Adele. She was a phenomenon, sold literally 10 times the number of albums as her closest competitors.

Everybody knew her name – she permeated the universe, she put a dent in it, at least with “21” – and what have we had since?

The Beatles exploded the music business.

Nothing like them had been seen before. Frank Sinatra did not write his own songs, he didn’t push beyond traditional genres.

And after the Beatles…

Well, we had the British Invasion.

Then for years, decades, we had a plethora of great acts, drawing attention across the world. And sure, today your music can be heard worldwide, but it’s hard to draw attention to it. It might end up going unheard. But if there’s mania, something great, the sky is the limit.

And it is not “Yummy.”

The story of today is how Justin Bieber tried to manipulate the Spotify numbers.

If only it were a better record.

His previous work stood out. Yup, you didn’t have to be a Belieber to love “Sorry” or “Love Yourself,” they rose above all the rest of the crap on the hit parade.

Now breakthrough acts don’t come from nowhere – they’ve always paid their dues for years before they become a phenomenon. Then again, what we’ve got today is social media phenomena, it’s so much easier to do that than to make great music, to play you’ve got to PRACTICE!

  1. Kerouac says:

    CAPTION THAT PIC #1

    – it ain’t heavy… macrocephaly (creator a swiss chiefs partisan by appearance, if not a fan proper perspective – double entendre – which seems to run rampant, KC faithful.)

Speaking of being a big fish in a small pond… “Is Patrick Mahomes The NFL’s Answer to The Beatles?”

    – in the same way the Chiefs ‘Offense of the 70’s revolutionized the NFL – which is to say he’s Namath… without the looks, arm or charm, as Chiefs were the 60’s Packers.

Kermit makes up for said deficiencies however via (am guessing) regular use Fiskar’s 21 inch Bow Pruning Saw, not wearing shades inside or fur coat the sideline, and too:

being beneficiary (as all modern ilk) playing during this easiest era history accumulate stats/records due far more opportunities (# of games) and less integrity (manipulation of rules to accommodate result$… darn that sports factoid to hell.)

Other than that, right up there with Namath/sports the 60’s, and The Beatles/ music, the same generation. Yes, die-hard Kerouac is a ‘big fan’ today’s sports* and music*.

    CAPTION THAT PIC #2

    – no lip-synching, no auto-tune, no bull… as sports once upon a time, ‘Oh I believe in yesterday’…

    😎

  2. Richard Cranium says:

Perhaps if you dislike sports as much as you do, you should not watch/pay attention…..as much as you do

    • Kerouac says:

I., one redux deserving another, e., well if you’re not certain, Queen Gertrude…

Doth protest too, too much that guilty pleasure Kerouac – verily hanging every word, following oh so closely ‘pon nape mine; wishest thou mightest I leave all that?

      Hmm… maybe ‘next year!’

(PS) “you still here?” (Ferris Bueller)

      😎

      • Kerouac says:

(PPS) Notice ‘Cranium’ posted five minutes aft Kerouac did – yet – latter’s post did not appear for viewing until more than five count had elapsed, appears (how could ‘Dick’ have seen Kerouac’s take?

Translation: there ‘insider’ postin’ goin’ on here (wink/nod), HC?

        😀

          • Kerouac says:

Alright, will take you at your word HC… haven’t got your fingers crossed behind your back do ya?

            😯

Was just that the same post appeared twice, and both bearing the same ‘timestamp’ two different articles, use of ellipsis as well one other clue (I’ll keep the latter to myself.)

Paranoid? No, that’d be Cosby (seeing football players in a huddle, while imagining they were talking about him – a joke circa same era Chiefs last had a pulse.)

Yeah, we can’t all be sleuth (Mannix) or lucky (‘Matt Foley’ – 35, divorced and living in a van ‘down by the river’), but any Jethro can double naught spy, here KCC.

            😎

  3. I Don't Give a F says:

Mahomes drops back and he can see more of what’s going on around him than any other QB. Not only does he have several WR’s and a Hall of Fame TE to throw to he has this uncanny ability to run a lightning quick scramble for 15-20 yards while running out of bounds without getting touched. He does this seemingly at will, the opposing team can’t defend what Mahomes is doing right now. Maybe they’ll figure him out but dood’s got 360 degree eyes like a goat.

    • I Don't Give a F says:

I think this happened in KC’s AFC Title game against the Titans but they said Mahomes ended up running for a total of 63 yards for the TD, which was the most by any QB all year.

  4. Shawnster says:

Can someone give me a quick synopsis of what Kerouac said? I skipped it all. Did he explain why he was wrong about the Ravens, Texans, and the Chiefs? That’s what I wanted to know, not all that mess of whatever that was. You know, brevity is the soul of wit so forth and so on.

    • admin says:

Wish I could tell ya, Shawnster…

      • Kerouac says:

Kerouac hasn’t been wrong about the swiss chiefs half a century…
part 2019 verse 50 (thought that He was mistaken, once, but as it turned out was just an * whence in the back door and through the roof happenstance occurred form happenstance, an blind squirrel moment, serendipity; ‘haven’t had that spirit here since, 1969’…

        😎

        • admin says:

          Guess that answers the question….

But to be sure, so no Super Bowl win this year?

          • Kerouac says:

Glad you asked… you may not be. Will break it up into three posts, so it will create the illusion (OR NOT?) that Kerouac Kares KC.

Is a numbers game as shall see and as do not wish disappoint or be known a shirker, say… cue the sad violins
            ______

SPOILER ALERT /stop reading here or continue at your own peril for ‘the rest of the story’

Creature habit, will per the usual go with my #32 gut, as size 7 5/8 hat tops head upon my shoulders – 50 years evidence – compounded daily with interest nod a peanut gallery KCC (they know who and where they are… unless Biden stops by, in which case all bets are off.)

Chiefs will see their own shadow, at minimum go underground another six months one more off-season ‘wait’ll next year’ serving part 2020, and verse 51 ( with deepest sympathies ) 🙁

Why? TEN, SF/GB a bridge too far – all them having beaten KC, course calendar year 2019.
HOU beat KC too – they had them beaten last Sunday as well, before (cue William Conrad) ‘fate moved its huge hand’, and that football ‘Fugitive’ an town favor forgot – Kansas City, escaped the death penalty… for now.

Unlike Dr. Kimble innocent, based evidence two games (both played KC), these teams would split an equal # of contests. In HOU odds likely tip to Texans. Overall, confident those Lone Star State betters Watson/HOU would prevail a series, all hands on deck/healthy.
            ______

Sunday’s game/slim chance one more beyond:

‘On any Sunday’ still presents possibility, just don’t see it happening, nod franchise history; mighty Kaycee will strike out once more.

But wait – then again, did something different this time… asked the Lord (I did – said it right here, KCC):

Lord ‘save us’ – let KC win one for the Hamster – dang’it, Shawnster. Perhaps Santa sent word to Him that Kerouac has been especially good this year (a chest verily bursts pride! Read his posts – … have an adult do so for Ham- er, Shawn. )

            END PART I
            ______

  5. Kerouac says:

Now, nod Housman, select ‘Shropshire Lad’

    XIII

    When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
    But not your heart away;
    Give pearls away and rubies
    But keep your fancy free.”
    But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

    When I was one-and-twenty
    I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
    Was never given in vain;
‘Tis paid with sighs a plenty
    And sold for endless rue.”
    And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.

In 1970 Kerouac was that one-and-twenty (and then some), and the glow was off Superbowl IV nigh afore you could say: ‘Chiefs were not ready physically or mentally for that season followed’, a sentiment expressed no less HOF MLB Willie Lanier hindsight ’70, more recent comments.

THIS was the straw that broke the damn Chiefs!

Blame Stram, blame the players, management – blame ’em all – good football gone bad, victory give way bottom line, corporate interest in lieu football success.

The late Keith Green’s song, a different context parentheses mine added –

‘Like a foolish dreamer (Chiefs fandom) trying to build a highway (dynasty), to the sky, all my hopes (Superbowl/bust) would come tumbling down (wait’ll next year), and I never knew just why’…

Well here’s why, hindsight mine – an arrogance beget complacency, an ‘been there done that’ in turn led descent, banquet circuit followed $igns change, bottom line replaced sign/draft players ‘good’ as those being preceded.

It was the best of times and the worst of times, and just like that it was over. Busine$$ beyond Arrowhead/the Chiefs replaced results gridiron; was then that I knew… mine Chiefs would never pass that ‘winning it all’ way again.

    END PART II

  6. Kerouac says:

‘Yeah but yeah but it’ll be different this year!’ cry the uninitiated.

Isn’t it always. Half century later – amirite?

    Who’s counting?

    Not me.

    18,266…

    days..

    past.

    😎

  7. Kerouac says:

    18,267… 18,268 … 18,269 … 18,270 … 18,271 …
