Hearne: Where’s the Scribe When You Need Him?

OK, so I lied…

Remember how I told you recently I was going to really start writing more? And then I did.

However, as the sun sets on my time here in Lawrence and my return to the wilds of Kansas City (July 6th) looms large, there are tons of loose ends to be addressed.  Resulting in me being spread super thin the next couple weeks.

Oh, I’ll continue to weigh in, but until I’m settled – mid July – it’s gonna be touch and go.

Take this morning…

Where The Big League’s measure of the NFL’s top coaches touched on the Cowtown by slotting in Chiefs main man Andy Reid at No. 10:

“Reid fails when the pressure is on. He can’t manage late-game situations and he doesn’t win in the playoffs. Sound familiar?”

    – like an habitual cacophony failure, every Coach since Stram. Names and seasons pass antiquity, turn the other cheek… latest a Pederson ours lost in lieu Schottenheimer 2.0 remains.

Those TBL ranked ahead Reid: two never won a Superbowl – one never even reached. Conversely, Reid is ranked ahead of one actually won a Superbowl; subjective bias is alive and well… as a matter of fact, opinion is not.

    * SPOILERS AHEAD *

This season’s journey another terminus: Mahomes another Blackledge, Jesse Haynes as Brunson burner same. No Superbowl, no post season, and no Hall of Fame QB too. ‘7-9 were in last place’ the whine, part 2018 verse 49; half a century in no time. Strike up another ‘this is our year!’ chorus on hold, Charley Brown’s foot vs Lucy’s phantom.

    😥

Reid can win with a playoff winning QB..Alex Smith is not that QB.

  3. 10 or 20 years? When Royals won it in 2015, I immediately thought it will be at least another 30 years (and perhaps longer) before they ever pull that off again. But God bless ’em, as any Royals/Chiefs/Mizzou fan can attest (the latter two being a couple of the most futile and sad-sack sports programs ever to exist in the annals of civilized world history).

      Don’t forget KU football, Rage

      • KU football REALLY screwed the pooch when they fired that big fatman, Mangino. That screwball got them more competitive than they had ever been, and (much to my chagrin) was especially skilled at motivating his team to play MU. Sure, he lost his last team at KU after making them eat hot bearclaws on a particularly blazing day in August, but he would’ve rebounded thereafter if given the chance. As an MU fan, I’m glad KU didn’t give him that chance. The subsequent history has been quite satisfying.

Speaking of that other KC masterpiece, fraud-royals: they are on pace to break a 54 year old record (if not a sweat, the process): fewest wins & most losses in an season.

Now 25-55, their 2018 version ‘have bats/balls will not travel’ (fewest runs scored and second fewest home runs in all MLB) are already 6 games worse than their forefathers the 1964 Athletics. Those A’s merely stood 31-49 aft 80* games (actually 81 games due an earlier ‘tie’ that season vs the Orioles being counted as a game by the AL.)

That the Eddie Lopat/Mel McGaha managerial combo officially ended up playing 163 games that ’64 season, winning but 57 while losing 105, sets a high bar for their latter-day Doubleday kin aspire to, let alone match.

Can’t go home again? Thomas Wolfe was wrong… Chiefs can’t, Royals are.

The Scribe is still on the mend from what?

  6. snappietom says:

Can somebody tell me why, after the Royals worked themselves up with great winning seasons, two World Series appearances, fantastic fan support, you let the whole organization flush and bring up all the turds to put on the field ?

I don’t understand why you do this and then try to rebuild again. What happened to if you can’t sign them, you sign somebody else and keep it rolling

    • admin says:

Far be it from me to unravel this riddle, snappietom, but…

Looks to me like it’s the boss man (owner’s call). He had his moment in the sun, now it’s time to lock up the cash and wait until they’ve been so bad so long, they stumble onto a can’t miss roster.

KC Royals ownership realized they fell into a trap when they gave Alex Gordon that huge contract.. all a sudden Alex couldn’t hit much better than .200 and his defense disappeared too. Pretty obvious Alex had stopped using gear, which ensures all of his contract is guaranteed. He’s roughly half the player he was before he signed big contract.
Soooo, Glass & Co. decided they wouldn’t fall for that trick again and decided to let all their stars sans Salvy walk away. I’d be mad too and I’d probably do the same. You never know what these ballplayers will do.
