Glazer:All Hail Mr. Bill

KU coach Bill Self won his 14th Big 12 title in a row by beating Texas Tech on the road 74-72!

Superstar senior Devonte Graham had a huge night doing it all to give Kansas the big win. With that win, KU broke the tie with UCLA for the all-time record of 14 straight titles. Kansas had shared that distinction with John Wooden‘s team until last week.

It’s a record that could stand forever.

This new record sets hall of fame coach Self apart from other Kansas City programs like the Chiefs’ Hank Stram and the Royals’ Ned Yost as the area’s greatest all-time head coach.

Yost and Stram both had two title games each winning one. Bill Self also had two national title games winning one and losing one. But winning 14 conference titles in a row I think sets him apart and gives him the nod as this area’s greatest coach.

And who knows, Self might win another national title.

In fact, if the Jayhawks win out they are likely a one seed for the 9th time in Self’s career.

Kansas should wrap up the title for themselves Monday by defeating Texas at home on senior night.

And you have to agree, this might be his greatest coaching job ever.

This KU team was undersized, undermanned and not one of Self’s most talented.

For example, Self has but one real starting guard in Graham, and only one big. The rest of the team has improved as the season went on and once again wins it for Bill.

Starting guard Graham is now the likely Big 12 Player of the Year and perhaps an All American and likely an NBA draft pick.He sure has the numbers now to prove it.

In a year with lots of changes with our Chiefs and the Royals in rebuild it’s nice to see Kansas come through. Maybe the Chiefs should have called on Devonte to school Marcus Peters in how to be a team leader instead of a team disrupter and he’d still be a Chief.

Way to go Bill Self!

Kudos to Self. 14 straight is so insane. Having said that, I fear it will be another early exit from the tourney this year. Only 7 deep is a killer for this team. They aren’t NEARLY as talented as Self’s other teams. They have to click on all 7 cylinders each and every night to win. that isn’t a championship formula. I’d say an Elite 8 run is going to be the most likely scenario. Hell, that might be optimistic.

Well, you got your name in the paper, CG. Not exactly the way you wanted, I’m sure. Hope things shake out OK for you.

  2. Blues Guy says:

All true BUT the pay to play scandal could cause them to forfeit the “Josh Jackson” victories.

  3. The Guy Who Knew Too Much says:

“Self has but one real starting guard in Graham”

Uh, this team has more guards than it knows what to do with, you moron. Newman, Vick, Svi…and those are just the guards that start alongside Graham.

    • CG says:

Jackoff, clearly I meant a POINT GUARD, the guy who runs the team, the floor and controls the offense and defense…that’s one guy,Devonte…the other guards are not capable of doing that MORON, so he stays out there 40 minutes a game.

  4. The Word says:

All this fawning over Self even after reports they are one of the teams the FBI is investigating?

  5. J Springer says:

The good news: ku is under official FBI investigation.

  6. Kerouac says:

“KU broke the tie with UCLA for the all-time record of 14 straight titles”

    – long as you don’t suggest Self/KU could carry Wooden/UCLA’s jock strap CG, feel free to genuflect at the foot results an over-sized fish in the small puddle be Kansas.

    Wooden vs Self career-wise:

    * John Wooden 826 games: 664-162 .804 overall
    620-147 .808 @UCLA ~ 29 seasons, 16 NCAA tournament appearances /47-10 record post season ~ 12 Final Fours = 10 National Championships/7 consecutive, 8 in 9/9 in 12 years including 4 unbeaten seasons

    * Bill Self 845 games: 646-199 .764 overall
    439-94 .824 @Kansas ~ 25 seasons, 20 NCAA tournament appearances / 43-18 record post season ~ 2 Final Fours = 1 National Championship/0 consecutive, 1 in 25 years including 0 unbeaten seasons

In appreciation full disclosure CG, didn’t want anyone to imagine there was any doubt as to who the better Coach and team(s) were… now it’s on to the 2018 seasons our 7-9 (if they’re lucky) Chiefs and 79-83 Royals.

KC area sports pro and college – love em, or…

    😎

    • Kerouac says:

One other note of import: when John Wooden was Coaching, 25 teams made the NCAA Tournament in his final season (1974)… today, almost 3 x as many teams, 68, make it.

Upshot – as the case modern day sports ‘shams’ variously to include NFL, MLB & NBA, mediocrity – a watered down field of tomato cans, ‘no team left behind’ makes re$ult$- er, results ‘holllll-owww.’

As Kerouac has said afore, the day is coming – sooner than later – when EVERY team in EVERY sport will make post season; economics demand$ it, and we’re poorer for it as fandom.

      🙁

  7. CG says:

So now Bill is an FBI case huh? Maybe and maybe not….look I believe its time to pay the college athlete in major sports like football and basketball, hell the schools make millions, coaches get paid 7 figures, pay these kids and end the handouts…they deserve it….as for Bill the more famous you get….the more crap you get online and in the media ask Donald, Brady,Hollywood stars, on and on…sign of the times bad news sells and good news is forgotten too fast….I like Bill, he is human, guess he had outside affairs thats between him and his wife…oh the hairpiece…so looks decent…hey he’s a winner…and seems like a decent guy to me…only met him twice, liked him.

  8. RickM says:

Guess Bill Walton is lighting some strong incense, crying into his truckload of tie-dye shirts and having “Dark Star” on constant rotation.

  9. CG says:

Some are upset that KU is a one seed or is slated to be with 6 loses, but their strength of schedule says they should be….they can’t lose to OSU or in the first round of Big Twelve tournament but otherwise number one seed…..how far can they go? Most say perhaps to the Elite Eight at best…you never know.

  10. Boom Boom says:

WELL THERE GOES KU CHANCES….glazo killed their chances again.
Now…craig….your boy “guy” says you were in the paper. What for this time.

As far as self….great guy and he deserves it. It appeared that the rest of the
league got tired from tough schedules late in the season. Oklahoma looked tired.
They all did….no legs left after a tough season. But self had grahm who carried
the team and the other players jointed in.

As far as how far can they go? Get a second seeding and they’re cooked befroe
final 8. Get a 1 ranking and go probably to final 16….butthis team has just one
player….grahm and once they start playing some of the other point guards in the
nation he’ll look stupid. They’ll eat the little guy up. And rememeber free throws
killed them before and could kill them again….but it should be fun.

As faras josh jackson…i can’t see them doing much to ku. There’s so many teams
doing this that it’s more important they figure out how to end the problem
then punish those who are guilty….because they’re all guilty from top to bottom.

As far glazo as your buddy trump….the noose gets tighter.

  11. Boom Boom says:

geez…glaze stfu! You jinxed KU against o state.
The downhill fall of glazo the bozo clown continues.
Please…go find some 25 years olds at p and l and spend your time with them.
Although they’ll go “whats that on your head?”

  12. Gavin says:

I’m as big a KU homer as you’ll find, so I love all this hate from people who are saying Self couldn’t carry Wooden’s jock and also pointing to unsubstantiated reports that KU is one of the schools being looked at by the FBI for paying players but either don’t know enough about Wooden or simply ignore that his program was built on a foundation of paying players and breaking NCAA rules.

I agree, Wooden was a great coach. If there were a Mount Rushmore for college basketball coaching, Wooden would be on it (although in my opinion, it would need space for at least five coaches). First, winning the NCAA tournament a marginally easier feat when Wooden only had to win four games. Of course, he *DID* win them, so that means quite a bit. But it had to be a lot easier when Sam Gilbert was there to make sure UCLA got all the great players. Again, yes, Wooden was a great coach but ask Dan Reeves if you don’t believe me: winning is easier with great players and his blind eye toward Gilbert’s cheating could only have helped.

To be clear, I agree. College basketball players should be paid. Their scholarships don’t represent NEARLY the value the athletes bring to their schools. But you can’t knock Bill Self and the possible FBI allegation with one hand and then talk about Wooden and how he was not only great but also PURE and use that as the reason Wooden was/is so much better than Self. You wanna bang on cheaters, that’s cool. You wanna say Wooden was better because Self cheated? Nah. We don’t know at all if Self cheated but even Wooden admitted that Gilbert broke all sorts of rules for UCLA although he denied that Gilbert really had any effect. Sure, Coach. You bet.
