Glazer: With KU, Royals Reeling, It’s All About…

Well Kansas City sports fans, it’s pretty much all about the Chiefs now…

For years we’ve been a city with a great Kansas men’s basketball team. However this season is a troubled one. KU coach Bill Self is struggling to get his 14th conference title in a row. The Royals are goners with ESPN predicting the team to have the worst position starting lineup in baseball. No power, no offense and average defense equals last place.

So guess what it’s all about?

The Kansas City Chiefs for 2018!

Do you believe Pat Mahomes is THE MAN?

What’s left of the Royals hitting attack will be led by Sal Perez, Whit Merrifield, Brandon Moss, Alex Gordon and Cheslor Cuthbert…not much in power there.

Oh yeah, and a new guy named Dozier. That’s assuming we don’t have Moose or Eric Hosme back…

Both of whom DON’T WANT TO BE HERE AGAIN UNLESS THEY HAVE NO GOOD OPTION.

I’d say the Royals are goners.

Remember, Hosmer will get little attention playing for a bad team – no press and his numbers won’t make him stand out amongst players on post season teams. So little to no attention for him here. Same with Moose.

Looks like a team that will be happy to win 70 games.

And even with Eric, Moose, Sal, Gordon and Cain we still finished under .500 last year!

How long can they sell the former 2015 champs bs?

It looks like a long boring next few seasons and back to the 1990’s stats.

KU of course is still a good, just not great squad.

Bill Self will have to do his best coaching ever to win the title again if he can get Devonte Graham,Mykhailuk,Udoka and Legerald Vick and Malik Newman to step it up some and win out the rest of the season!

It’s gonna be tough.

KU can’t lose to anyone down the last 5 games especially Texas Tech.

That’s a must win game.

So it’s really the Chiefs time with a new (perhaps) superstar in quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The Chief are dumping the old guys on defense but can they find replacements for DJ, Tamba and perhaps Justin Houston and draft pick bust Dee Ford?

Will Kareem Hunt become a better running back?

Lets face it, he sucked the last 10 games other than the Chargers win.

He’s perhaps the main reason we lost in the first round of last year’s playoffs. He just couldn’t run the ball. He also sucked in the Pro Bowl and that line was really good.

So can Mahomes raise all ships?

Will he be allowed to do his thing by head coach Andy Reid?

Can he make stars of lesser receivers like Albert Wilson or Chris Conley?

I think HE CAN.

The Chiefs will be battle Oakland and Denver for the west and if Denver gets the Washington quarterback…

I see KC winning 10 games with Mahomes and perhaps a wild card berth or better.

I’ve believed he’s the real deal from Day One.

Keeping Don Sutton as our defensive head coach is not good.

Let’s see how it all pans out.

I hope Bill Self gets No. 14!

And will Royals still draw crowds in August or September with the team way out of the race?

I say NO.

  1. BOB Sutton, Glazer – DON Sutter retired from MLB in 1988….30 freakin’ years ago.

  2. CG says:

Kansas took a big step towards a 14 title by defeating West Virginia Saturday nite. Thank goodness great comeback. With the Tech loss a win there and a win over OU locks up the title..going deep in March is highly unlikely but you never know. Hosmer of course took the San Diego deal, he had too…don’t kid yourselves nobody plays KC unless they have too…its not a market they want to be in if they have an option like better weather, fun city and media town, this ain’t it…Eric NEVER planned to come back, EVER.

  3. E.H. says:

Welp, we lost Hosmer, he’s a San Diego Padre now. It certainly looks like we’re in a rebuilding phase right now. But look what the Royals pulled off? They went to two World Series in a row, that doesn’t happen very often. Not even the powerhouse Cubs could pull that off. We’re kind of hamstrung with the Alex Gordon and Ian Kennedy contracts so it makes sense to ride out the next couple of years and hopefully we can compete again in 2020.

    • CG says:

E.H. that was a 30 year wait my friend…remember we built them from our minor leagues, that’s a once in a long time event…trouble is getting name players to come here for medium bucks…but hey it could happen again some time down the road, not soon.

      • E.H. says:

Yes, it was a 30 year wait but KC was in contention almost every year from 1985-1994..we collapsed right after the strike ended when ownership sold off our good players. so really it was a terrible 19 years.
As for 2014-2015 World Series teams, not all of our players were built from our minor leagues. Remember, we traded Zack Greinke to the Brew Crew for Lorenzo Cain, Alcedes Escobar, and Jake Odorizzi and then later we traded Odorizzi and Wil Myers to the Rays for James Shields and Wade Davis. These were originally seen as stupid moves but they turned out to be fantastic, leading KC to the promised land..Now Odorizzi and Myers are just so-so players if you ask me. Myers strikes out so much it’s ridiculous. Odorizzi aint nothing special that’s for sure. Oh yeah, Greinke is still very good pitcher but he’s now been on 4 teams with no World Series ring.

The Royals are in a bad situation right now, signing Alex Gordon to a 5 year contract seemed like a good deal back in 2016 but ole’ Alex is a shell of his former self, thankfully KC can opt out of his final year for 4 million instead of paying him 23 million..in other words, we only have to suffer with Alex for 2 more seasons. What’s worse is we have THREE more years of Ian Kennedy, he SUCKS and KC owes him 50 million dollars thru 2020. Probably best to move him out of the starter slot ASAFP.

Anyway, I think Dayton Moore can make some good moves but we’re not going to see a good KC team in 2018/2019..Not a complete rebuild, more like 3/4 of a rebuild. What really hurts is the attendance will go down drastically..it’s been a fun 4 years but now it’s time to pay the piper!

  4. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Come on, CG. Cuonzo Martin is leading one the best turnarounds in the nation this year at Mizzou. Taking them from a miserable 8 win team last year, to an almost NCAA Tournament lock. And this WITHOUT Michael Porter Jr. Also to keep in mind…Martin has also lost 4 scholarship players off the roster during the season. Michael Porter Jr., Blake Harris, CJ Roberts, & Terrance Philips are no longer are playing for Missouri. ALL were on the Mizzou roster on opening night versus Iowa State. Show me another coach that’s lost 1/3 of his team during the year and will still make the NCAA’s. Either you aren’t really paying attention, or are just being willfully ignorant. There is plenty of interesting story lines still happening in KC without the Royals, Chiefs, etc.

    • CG says:

True MU and K State have had nice basketball seasons and likely in the tournament so yes its better. Now Kansas with wins over WV and OU are moving towards a 14 title and a number 2 seed even with a win out a number one seed…so things are looking up.

  5. The Guy Who Knew Too Much says:

Hey, Glazer, we traded Moss to the A’s way back on January 30th. Numbskull.

  6. Kerouac says:

Other than Don Sutton being past his prime & Brandon Moss gathering no more KC, nice analysis CG: fraudroyals are “goners” (unless Amos Otis, Cookie Rojas and Fred Patek discover the fountain of youth.)

Other side the lot ‘gate wait till next year, ‘aisle 2018, seat 49’, Bob ‘Greg Robinson 2.0’ Sutton and Pat ‘Jamarcus Lite’ Mahomes et al look primed for a 5-11 finish based their current roster, including the AFC West’s worst defense & QB; post draft/free agency, 7 wins possibly, tops.

(PS) Looking forward (or backward) to Tiny Archibald and Gary Veneruzzo having big seasons on the hardwood and ice this year – Go Kings/Blues!

    😎

    • Kerouac says:

Those did not play the game ‘opine’, those ‘did play the game’ rate the best QB ever on their team: Donald Driver, 14 years a WR the GB Packers.

Multi-time 1,000 + yard and All Pro who retired in 2012. On the receiving end passes both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers – two rocket-arms, no waiting – an Superbowl win a piece, and an Hall of Fame enshrinement fini & fait accompli.

Driver was interviewed by voters of the ‘Pro Football Hall of Fame’ committee, and asked the question – “which of the two QB’s would you pick if you had one game to play?”

“If I had to choose one that I know would do it I would probably choose Bart Starr.”

Bart Starr, the ‘no rocket arm he’ greatest QB of all-time according to various measurement criteria. Merely the most decorated QB GB Packers’ history – 5 Championships in 7 years (unmatched), an Hall of Famer, multi-time winner MVP’s Super Bowl & regular season, winner 9 of 10 (unmatched) post season starts, highest QB post season rating history, 104.8 (unmatched), and retired as the NFL’s all-time completion % leader.

Donald Driver concludes about Bart Starr: “He played in the era where there wasn’t a lot of protection, when the game was hard-nosed football, and that’s what I loved about him. Getting to know Bart over the years … what with me being in Green Bay, he showed that leadership & determination that you can fight through anything.”

      • Kerouac says:

‘Hype’ and it’s older brother ‘over-hype’ is a many-splendored thing… breaking one’s own arm patting oneself on the back be another relative the ‘how great am I and is mine’ arm club.

Of QB’s & rocket-arms: Josh Allen vs Patrick Mahomes, et al

A newer, shinier version Mahomes is this year’s 2018 NFL Draft flavor of the moment, Allen. Like Mahomes 2017, Allen extolled as having ‘the strongest’ arm ever – throwing speedand distance numbers better in fact than Mahomes.

Just as Allen arm is stronger/faster than Mahomes – ditto CIN Bengals WR John Ross (among others) legs are faster than KC’s WR Tyreek Hill, the ‘hey look at & listen to me everybody!’ club is alive and well.

Mahomes is reportedly a ‘humble’ guy; your conclusion may var aft reading his quote below:

“I’ve seen these things with Josh but I’m going to say believe I have the stronger arm. I’ve never seen anyone throw it harder than me with the football. Until I see it in person, I’ll believe I have the stronger arm.” (the combine record is reportedly 66 mph, so already Mahomes is er, um, ‘mistaken’, somethin.)

Mahomes threw it 62 mph and 80 yards last year (says he can throw it 85, with the wind at his back)… Kerouac (who is more than 62) can throw it ‘more than’ 80 yards with an (gale force) wind behind me… I know this because I say so.

Allen’s sports performance QB Coach Ryan Flaherty, who has worked with many of the NFL’s top QB’s, says Allen can throw it 89 or 90 yards and 69 or 70 mph.

Considering the chances ever having to do so in an NFL game are slim and none, nod Lawrence Welk: “wunerful wunerful.”

These names were legend too: Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, Kyle Boller, Jay Cutler, Jeff George … Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. For every Elway and Favre, be many, many more don’t amount to diddly poo.

  7. miket. says:

so, cg, you’re saying eff the rest of ku’s season (which i guess includes Mizzou and K-State,too), plus go ahead and write off the Royals’ season because we should have zero expectations past last place, and go ahead be a freakin’ turnip until training camp starts up?

well at least you didnt trash the chiefs too like k-rac would have…

shame on me for wasting my time reading that crap. hearne, cant believe you’ve let this site become nothing more than warmed over wastewater…. thought you were better than this.
