Hearne: Everytime KU Men’s Basketball Loses a Big One an Angel Gets Its Wings

I have a confession…

It may not come as much 0f a surprise to some, but here goes:

I like it when KU loses a basketball game – the bigger the better.

Here’s why.

Because living in Lawrence, Kansas the past few years has made one thing painfully clear; that KU basketball fans are so over-the-top in the tank for their team that virtually nothing else matters.

Let me restate that for emphasis:

Nothing in life is more important to KU basketball fans than winning.

Now allow me to back that off just a bit.

The murder of one’s loved ones and financial ruin still rule the roost.

However things like basic human values, morals and decency all take a distant backseat to whatever song and dance basketball coach Bill Self and the KU Athletics Department want to offer up in the way of pathetic excuses.

Excuses for things like the assault and battery against women and wee hours, boorish behavior by players outside bars where not even Lawrence police bother to check to see if the underage lawbreakers have been drinking.

It gets worse.

Here in and around Lawrence, otherwise everyday-average, normal-seeming individuals who excel in any number of areas of their lives – business, education, retail, the arts, hipsters, you-name-it – are not just willing to part company with clear thinking. They actively embrace blatant wrongheadedness and make up amazingly lame excuses to rationalize the wrongdoer’s wrongdoings.

No kidding!

You should hear some of the ridiculous things KU fans say to justify criminal behavior by athletes. Things like, all college kids do that sorta stuff – assault women and kick the you-know-what out of their cars – and none of them ever get busted or prosecuted.

Or how about this one? That the woman involved probably had sex with every player on the team and got what she deserved.

Think I’m making this up? I’m not.

So yeah, when KU’s angelic men’s basketball team loses a big one like tonight, know what I call that?

I call it karma.

    (Get your popcorn ready!)

I think the KU faithful may be too pooped to pop, Guy.

I did have the pleasure of listening ever-briefly to 610 Sports and WHB this morning, with the hosts making excuses, rationalizations and wringing their hands over KU’s lopsided loss.

Didn’t catch any karma talk though…

  2. CG says:

Boy, that was brutal Hearne. However they did stink and were a huge embarrassment again…damn.

  3. Kerouac says:

It’s awful quiet in here, cheering replaced the ‘sound ku silence’…

    Hello letdown, my old friend
    Backside was tanned once again
We counted chickens much too soon
We had stars – soon would have the moon
Was no doubt, that the doubters were all lame,
    their silly claim
Sunday would bring, sound ku silence

    😉

I like your post today! Hit the nail on the head.

    Dead on the money!!

  6. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

College athletes getting preferential treatment and fans of said college being apologists for those athletes and only caring about wins and loses?

    Whoa! There’s some insight.

We get it, HC. You hate KU and you hate The Star.

    Copy/Paste. Copy/Paste.

By the way, The Star just increased the cost of their daily paper to $2.00. Sick ’em, boy!

      Easy there, Jimbo…

That’s a lotta hatin’ you’re giving me credit for.

How about I let you in on a little secret? I don’t hate anybody…honest!

Would it interest you to know, that I’ve held both KU football and basketball season tickets for years. And that my dad went to KU and I grew up a KU fan?

Or would that interfere with your preconception of how you think I feel?

Sounds to me like you’re the one who’s biased. A little thin-skinned perhaps?

And yes, sports fans tend to be devoted – often times to a fault. But blind devotion in the face of this kind of a situation? And stone walling by the athletics department with Bill Self showing such great disdain for local media who had the audacity to even inquire?

      Yep, karma

      • Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Sorry, buddy. I don’t have to rely on any of my preconceptions. Your articles regarding all things KU/The Star speak for themselves.

Would it interest YOU to know that I didn’t graduate from KU, nor have I ever owned season tickets for KU football or basketball?

        I’m just a fan, not a sycophant.

And in other shocking (not really) news, the Lawrence Police Department is also in the bag for kU. Disgusting.
