Glazer: The Death of Society & Culture As We Knew It

frstOne of the reasons many of us try to accomplish things in life is for our own history…

Our legacy, if you will.  That’s the wayn it is in this new America, where even major events and famous people are forgotten in the blink of an eye.

I speak with many young people – the new generation – and their interest in the past is nearly nonexistent. When I ask them to name famous actors, historical figures or even major events that most of us are well aware of, they don’t know or care.

It’s shocking to me.

Names that mean nothing include, Johnny Carson, John Wayne, Paul Newman, Babe Ruth, Micky Mantle, any president before Kennedy and any war heroes.

In fact, they know nothing much of anything about this country’s past wars.

They know nothing about WWI or WWII. Nothing about Korea, Vietnam or much about our history at all, The Civil War…HUH?

No, they don’t know the blue was  the north and the grey was the south. It’s not taught much in school and if it is taught, they don’t seem to listen or to care.

Now some of you are thinking, “Well, Craig you’re just getting older and not accepting all the changes.” Maybe.

So let me get this straight: you guys over 35 think this is all just fine. The new way – the SOCIAL MEDIA world? Really.

You like it that anywhere you go from a restaurant to a movie theater, the entire audience under 30 is on their iPhone texting and Face Booking, usually about nothing of any importance. Or better yet, playing the latest game? Shopping?

What’s lost in this mix is our recent past.

Accomplishments of even our parents and their generation are just not important anymore.

If someone told you say 20 years ago that most major book stores would now be closed and in fact writing books at all is dying out, would that have surprised you?

“Oh, everything’s online Craig.”

Really? I see.

What if you were told that soon movie theaters would be about as abundant as drive in theaters? And it’s all going to happen really soon. Much of television would replaced by online shows you can watch on your phone. Fewer and fewer new stars would last or really be very well known.

1378431-wayn23Hey, everyone’s a star on You Tube, right?

“Over 3,000 people saw my video on youtube, who needs stars, I’m a star!”

Yep.

With the death of our film, television and music history comes to a certain extent the death of our culture.

Add in American history and it’s turning into a land of cold, isolated young people.

They don’t really even go out like we did anymore. The old days of meeting girls and guys in nightclubs, bars, restaurants, parties, is also dying out.

“Look at this girl I met on my dating sight, she’s kinda hot.”

Nobody talks on the phone much anymore do they? “Just text me, I don’t answer my voice mail much.”

You like that?

I believe in our past, good and bad. I believe it tells us how to handle the future better. We learn from our mistakes, like the soon to be forgotten Holocaust just over 60 years ago.

Millions were killed by a maniac and his followers and buddy, it could happen again.

Young people need to know about these important events and people.

I’ve been to our public schools. Some are still solid, but most aren’t.

In areas with less income public schools mostly organized day jails with lots of security.

There’s just not much interest in learning. I find all this to be very sad and scary. Most of us pretend it’s not going on, that things are just new and ‘better.

Look at all the new apps on my phone, aren’t they cool?

So our lives are now more about our computers and phones. I find that a cold and sad state of being.

Hey!! You kids!! Get off my lawn!!

  3. Phaedrus says:

Holy sh!t…I actually agree with a Glazer article. It drives me crazy to go out to dinner and see a table of 4 people all sitting there staring at their phones.

“So let me get this straight: you guys over 35 think this is all just fine. The new way – the SOCIAL MEDIA world? Really.”

Anybody else see the delicious irony of bitching about the “social media world” on a social media site? Classic.

  5. Bob says:

“I speak with many young people – the new generation – and their interest in the past is nearly nonexistent. ”

Every generation has said the exact same thing about generations younger than their generation.

    • Frank says:

Maybe exterminating jews, enslaving people of all races, hanging blacks, and then reminiscing about it through symbolic flag warship isn’t their cup of tea

  7. KCMonarch says:

“There’s just not much interest in learning.”

Glazier, by your own admission (and as evidenced by your syntax and grammar) you had very little interest in learning when you were in school. And look how you turned out…..holy f*ck, you are right. We are doomed.

  8. g says:

This is actually a very thoughtful post, Craig. There’s been other writings lately about how the Milennials and others couldn’t give a fig about family heirlooms and the like. Very sad and regrettable.

    • h says:

Every generation shapes the world in which they live. And every generation before them feels entitled to begrudge their decisions.

  9. CG says:

INteresting comments. So nothing is wrong…just the new generation huh…really…TWO REPORTERS SHOT AND KILLED TODAY A WOMEN AND A CAMERA GUY, NO REASON…I guess this is now normal. NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE IN AMERICA BUT GUESS ITS OK NOW.

    • chuck says:

The talking heads on all stations are already spinning this into a mental health issue.

      Bullhockey.

If this black man was mentally deranged, then there are hundreds I have met exactly the same and millions out there ready to do the exact same thing. Steeped in hatred of whites and encouraged by politicians, the media and the entertainment industry to believe that personal responsibility is for others and success can only be achieved after the destruction of the rule of law and the social contract, his actions are the new normal. Murder, rape, robbery and violent crime are excused for blacks in a Moral Relativity Paroxysm of Ethnomasochistic, Progressive Ignorance.

He (Bryce Williams) was NOT mentally ill, he was the product, the expected and logical outcome created by a society whose liberal elites achieve sinecure and make bank on black hated and dysfunction.

Social determinism will reduce this horror, to an anomaly, from a “disadvantaged”, “disaffected”, “disenfranchised”, act. “Misbehavior” that needs to be “medicalized” and outsourced to state-approved experts, or reduced to the fault of the amorphous thing called society.

Is anyone shocked that not one “expert” is calling it what it actually was?

It was a hate crime. Period.

  10. h arley says:

    its normal glaze.
with the hate that guys like trump spread you’d understand
    Its all about hate.
His “fans” in Alabama yelled “white power”.
Blacks in ferguson/Baltimore/ burned down their own cities.
And becaue we have 300 million video cameras ready to roll in America
    we can see it all!!!!!
The new normal….it’s really the old normal caught on a G7.

  11. Harry Balczak says:

You sound like every old person ever.

  12. mark smith says:

Every “younger generation” has apathy regarding what previous generations find important or of interest, so that’s nothing new. Eventually as we mature and realize that the universe isnt centered around us individually, we come around. We pay attention, we take interest. So todays skull full of mush will be tomorrows opinionated oldster. You’re right about social media and technology though. It’s created a “look at me” culture. Relatives who post personal tripe on Facebook, what they ate, who they hate, fukkin cat memes, blah blah blah. Narcissism is rampant. Shallowness and vapidity are as common and regular as harley betting 10k in monopoly money every time he thumbs another of his manic depressive diatribes. At the end of the day all you can do is YOU. If you can look yourself in the mirror, say youve done your best to make your wrongs right, with a straight face.lived your life…that’s all you can control. You cant wish, hope, or change the complacency or idiocy that surrounds us all. It’s always going to be there, we just notice it when it’s someone other than our-self.

    • chuck says:

      God bless you Mark Smith.

    • h arley says:

spare me the b.s …you need to change it all!

      • h arley says:

thats a bunch of b.s. coming from an ex con and loser!!!!!!!!
you couldn’t squeeze 10 dollars together much less
        10K.
        spare us the b.s. loser!
        you’re a loser….and nothing can change that.

    • h arley says:

every word makes you look like a clown.
when do you exit from this dyng site and take your racism to
the kkk or white power blog.
You’d be a hit there…they love your kind of lies and hatred there
because you ain’t got anything to say that’s not sickening.
Just another old/bald headed/stuck in the past/long winded
nut who has no sense of reality in todays world.
      good luc….you’ll need itdude

  13. Kerouac says:

CG, being that you were born in the year Julius & Ethel’s untimely (for them) demise, same decade as was Kerouac, my preference: choose to exist in the present, live in the past – much as possible.

Few the concessions mine, so-called ‘progress’. No to the Chiefs & the Royals, si si to President Trump. Being driven to distraction female tv news ‘journalists’? who dress like tallonatores I do not embrace, which leads into my desktop computer concession take, a side dish of internet access and the ability to access the past in a flash.

The mechanics: email replaces snail, virtual file cabinet in lieu hard metal & fingertip bill paying rather in person sufficient grudging acceptance. As PC/printer replaces a typewriter/office copier (still need fuel, electricity and ink instead a ribbon and type-ball), for every something gained there is something lost. Repetitive stress & various ergonomic issues, carpal tunnel, eye strain among new liabilities – and concessions of another type to progress.

Entertainment fare, own no iPod nor cell phone, and no Facebook too. Retain landline, turntable/records/cassettes and 8-tracks. Watch/own old movies and tv shows while eschewing modern fare, reality (such as it is) circa 2015. Driving vintage iron horses the mid 1960’s to late 1969 (model year 1970) my break point.

Styling, motor vehicles? A lost art. Sports today? Not impressed. Music? Where’s the vomit bag. Mankind? Bukowski offered – “I don’t hate people. I just like them better when they’re not around.” Cioran – “Only optimists commit suicide, optimists who no longer succeed at being optimists. The others – having no reason to live – why would they have any reason to die?”

Limited internet paper prevents further admissions mine, so, see you all ‘yesterday’.

    🙂

  14. Kerouac says:

An addendum, Cioran: “progress is the injustice each generation commits with regard its predecessors.”

    : -)

  15. h arley says:

where’s porky? oh he’s on the slip and slide!

  16. CFPCowboy says:

In the 1960s, we thought 50s music was old. Now, 50s music is almost 60 years old. No, the younger generation knows little about history, but the lack of knowledge is progressive. We obtained over 1000 signatures in front of the Kansas Student Union just to pass 10 laws. We received comments that they would never pass them, but almost nobody recognized the ten as the Bill of Rights. In high schools we are taught what the Constitution says, studying what each of the Amendments says and does, but we rarely see the actual document, relying on the Supreme Court to define it for us, even though it is written in English. We do not teach economics or history, expecting college graduates to know it. In short, they don’t. I agree with you about legacy, but I expect, like history says, those that do not know it are doomed to repeat it. I just hope the younger souls survive the coming lesson.

  17. Lydia says:

We no longer have a common culture, and common cultural assumptions. This is sad.

    • h arley says:

wtf are you talking about? seriously…that’s an airhead comment.
Are you really megan Kelly under another name?

      • mark smith says:

Learn to spell shitbird. It’s Megyn Kelly.. By the way I hear your about to become famous. Now go take your meds and rub your moms goiter.

        Now you respond ” 10 grand….convict….Im rich….you’re old…”

    • the dude says:

For someone that purports to be Mr. Youth you sound more like sour gramps.

      • CG says:

The story as mentioned several times ‘ain’t bout me’ its about todays young social media world…if you want to pretend its about me thats on you…reread it pal. Thank you.

  18. Furioso says:

Well Craig, you reap what you sow.

  19. Richard Hell says:

I was sayin let me out of here before I was
Even born–it’s such a gamble when you get a face
It’s fascinatin to observe what the mirror does
But when I dine it’s for the wall that I set a place

I belong to the blank generation and
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the ______ generation but
I can take it or leave it each time

Triangles were fallin at the window as the doctor cursed
He was a cartoon long forsaken by the public eye
The nurse adjusted her garters as I breathed my first
The doctor grabbed my throat and yelled, “God’s consolation prize!”

I belong to the blank generation and
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the ______ generation but
I can take it or leave it each time

To hold the T. V. To my lips, the air so packed with cash
Then carry it up flights of stairs and drop it in the vacant lot
To lose my train of thought and fall into your arms’ tracks
And watch beneath the eyelids every passing dot

I belong to the blank generation and
I can take it or leave it each time
I belong to the ______ generation but
I can take it or leave it each time……

  20. CG says:

Guys again this wasn’t about me, its about whats going on today. That’s all if you think its all normal and ok so be it. I don’t.

  21. Frank says:

Your story was about kids using cell phones all the time and not knowing who older celebrities (like, I don’t know…YOU) are anymore. The story was not about the murders that are going on around the country as you suggested in a post above. You seem to have a knack for writing a story and then trying to change what it was about in the comments section when you get some unkind comments. Unless, you are going to use the old trick of telling us your story WAS about the murders, but your buddy Hearne actually wrote it and messed up what you were trying to say. You have that knack as well.

    • CG says:

WTF. OK, no clue what you are talking about…a story about old celebrities…its a story about how todays generation of social media lives don’t know about anyone much from five years ago. That includes YOU. Get it.

  22. boxboy sings his favorite song says:

where’s porky? I think he’s hauling some furniture today.
If anyone sees him with a big old yellow sofa tell him to bringit back
to the section 8 apartment. He can use it as a bed for the visitors
    from the scientists!

  23. I've been working on the moving truck says:

Boy this is tough. When do I get a break? And the rugs smell like cat urine.
    Hey it pays my bills!

  24. Media Mogul says:

CG, sounded like you were describing Tony Botello. With his lacking journalistic skills, he relies on the Urban Dictionary for his daily racial promotes. It’s amusing to listen to a 40 year old try and be 18. Using hipster slang with a second class UMKC education to support a cheap porn habit. Trolling coffee shops in a lame attempt to pick up waitresses while looking over his shoulder for the infamous Polar Bear. That boy is a solid “minger”. Living you’re life avoiding imaginary stalkers and hate mongers while running a media empire from the basement of a soon to be condemned building. Where can I get me a blog ?
