Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather will each make more than $100 million…
It’s the fight of THIS century, at least money wise and 2100 is a long way off. Are they both undefeated? No. Are they the two best ever in their weight class? No. Are either of the two the best pound for pound fighters of all time? No way.
So whats the big deal?
Because these two are the only real big names in today’s boxing world.
Five or six years ago they were considered the best pound for pound fighters out there.
Now maybe not.
But the fight world wanted to see this fight, badly. So everyone waited.
May weather kept winning and in the meantime he got five domestic violence charges and sent one lady to the hospital he beat her with his fists so badly and then he pulled a weapon on her. Nice.
For all that he got like 90 days in jail.
OJ took back some paintings and memorabillia, got 15 years and he’s still in prison.
Nevada’s not a liberal state.
Floyd is MONEY in Vegas because he lives there and is big money to the hotels and casinos. This fight means nearly $1 billion for a week’s work for all involved. You have gamblers, rooms, food and entertainment – all going on at five times money or more. city wide. So Floyd is the man. For now.
Manny is the nice guy.
Simply put most whites like Manny while most blacks like Floyd.
Manny has lost two of his last five fights, including being knocked out. May weather is a full time boxer and even at age 38 in great shape. Manny is born again, a political leader in the Philippines, very rich and kind of gentle. That said, Manny is still a thug at heart and has a huge ego. No fixing the fight with him. He may have to carry Pacquiao a few rounds in the end to get a $500 million rematch.
That he might do. Throw it? No.
Last century there were a ton of monster fights.
Joe Lewis vs. Max Schmellng, Sonny Liston vs. Cassius Clay. Ali vs. Foreman, Sugar Ray vs. Hagler. The fight of the century was MUHAMMAD ALI VS. JOE FRAZIER. No question. Two undefeated heavy weights. Both in their prime.
May weather says he’s better than Ali or Sugar Ray. Uh, no.
Ali had the toughest road, he fought at least 10 men who were or would be champs. Several who could have been. A brutal lineup. Floyd and Manny are not as good as Roberto Duran, Julie Ceasar Chavez,Alexis Arguello, Salvador Sanchez or Ray Leonard for that matter.
Both are top 25 fighters of all time but near the bottom of that list.
The winner is Floyd Mayweather who goes the distance and wins a decision.
The wife beater barely cracks the top third of the best. That goes to show how much boxing sucks these days. Duran would have crushed Mayweather if the two fought in their primes.
Good point, dude. As long as we are dreaming of great match-ups, how about Ali vs. Marciano when they were in their prime. ’72 Lakers vs. ’96 Bulls, ’27 Yankees vs. ’70 Orioles. Man, I’m old.
1 billion dollars…and look what we got!
We got scammed….except those who watched for free
on periscope ……no money to pay per view.
But lets talk insider trading. Pac was injured 3 weeks before fight…
no pain relievers allowed by the nev. commission. How big
was that.
Friends in vegas knew pac was hurt….so they took the insider
info and bet mayweather.
Heard that this was one of Vegas’s biggest takes ever. But vegas is
owned by corporations/wall street/bankers and the Chinese who lent
them billions at 12% interest when their money ran out.
Weall got taken for a ride. Floyd danced like james brown and walked
away with 100 million…..pac wanted the money…and the
hedge funds were placing huge bets because they knew what was up….
Who cares…boxing is dead……Mr. White will put the nail in the coffin
soon….
what a ripoff! vDid anyone really think something wouldn’t happen
and there would be another fight…maybe 2 more.
Toomuch money for the houses to not have it happen.
will we be suckers again? Of course we will.
Its the American way.
May weather has been beautiful this year.
+1
First off I wrote this last Friday and as you can see which Hearne didn’t explain, I was on the money…I spelled Mayweather correctly I think Hearne thought the guys name was May then Weather…he is not a fight guy, clearly again sorry for that…he was busy moving.
Allow me to step in here…
This is THE DUMBEST comments section exchange ever.
First of all, Craig spelled Mayweather correctly at the beginning of the column in bold.
In posting this yesterday in haste, I didn’t catch the auto spellcheck correct that change two secondary appearances to “May weather.”
My interest or lack thereof in boxing has nothing to do with it.
For Craig to suggest that is probably the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in the comments section and given Harley’s track record, that’s saying something.
bring back the cobblers in Lawrence…
bring back the jewelery heist and the other comedic
stories on this blog.
But remember Harley is always right…and
will continue to be right.
Iv made some predictions but you didn’t post them
hearne.
Are you afraid I might just be the smartest guy
on here and can predict the futurebaseddon
facts and stats.
Glaze….you didn’t do anything great…every dime
in vegas was gong to Floyd….I heard about it a week
before the fight.
If you need any info contact me. I appreciate
the ink…but for once the glaze is right….for once!!!!
What I woudn’t give to see Marvin Hagler stomp the crap out of Mayweather.
Oh god, I went on youtube and watched the Hagler v. Hearns the other night. Now THAT was a fight. HOLY CRAP.
Just watched the highlights on YouTube. Good God Almighty. Now THAT was a championship fight!
I meant rewatched.
Where’s the editor? Good god, that was hard to read.
May weather? Joe Lewis? Julie (?) Ceasar (?) Chavez? Max Schmellng?
Now those were actual bonafide Craig misspellings.
Hey, I’m in the middle of a major move as I mentioned, so I let Craig’s post mostly stand on it’s own.
We’ll get back on track here in the next day or so, Typo Haters
Fight fixing: Kerouac has never wavered his belief that when Sonny Liston was ‘knocked out’ by Cassius Clay in 1963, it was fixed; suspect that such things are even worse today, as everything modern sport – including the ‘fighters’boxers’. Rocky Marciano uber alles.
Of course it was fixed.
Concord as sarcasm prerogative each of us, Clay alone defeated Liston in the same way Lee Harvey alone assassinated JFK the Dealey Plaza; opinions as suspension of disbelief vary.
The fact some still refer it as a “phantom punch” (Clay himself asked “did I hit him?” aft the fight), some refer it Liston saying he wasn’t hurt but did not hear the count, or call said a plethora inference it was not a confluence of impact upon Sonny’s chin so much as a confluence perfect storm Liston’s desire ‘take a dive’ even afore the fight, Muslim angle & other information come to light since, conspiracy theories as ‘official’ version (as the recent Pacquaio v Mayweather fiasco, example) be fraught with doubt and an aft the fact backstory that lends itself to further justified speculation – and may lead to a Pacquaio v Mayweather $econd bout for the ages.
As PT Barnum may not have said but retains credit for, “there’s a sucker (or several thousand) born every (big fight) minute.”
Clay/Liston ’63 result remains a dubious conclusion to this day.
And too, perhaps if my ‘magic keyboard’ (as the magic bullet Dallas, same) did not intervene, ‘Kerouac’ could actually spell his own name right, in lieu that other guy Keroauc who keeps absconding my surname, inserting his own.
🙂
(PS) By the way CG, when are you going to review KCindy’s ‘awesome’ (snicker) 2015 NFL draft choices? Kerouac needs to slay the Chiefs ‘this is our year part 46’ universe some more.
🙂
WELL K it was an ok draft. Considering the Chiefs don’t ever draft well, not for years. Getting one or two starters is a big deal for them. Ones that matter. I like the wide out, the rest who knows…Alex has an offense if the line holds up. So now we will see what he is for real…no I don’t see a Super Bowl team, no. Maybe another playoff team, that can win ONE. Maybe…hard to say. Nothing to jump up and down about.
A very honest take yours as usual CG… no one can rank a draft in the days immediately aft of course. Kerouac’s take is, sooner or later, the latest Chiefs #1 pick will blow up in their face. The prediction mine goes to Pacman Jones/Aquib Talib whence the result is speculated upon. After KC’s first selection, a mishmash the usual suspects: something missing from each of them in the way talent, size or resolve, variously… a crap-shoot every team, as every draft, time immemorial.
Will say that (barring injury, which can invalidate preconceived predictions) , the Chargers #1 choice RB Gordon will turn out to be the best player/have the biggest impact of any #1 AFC West team’s selections, 2015 season.
As every, shall have to wait and see (except case KCindy, Chiefs as Royals – ‘wait till next year’ always the smart choice.) As was Kerouac correct 2014 picking ‘World Champion’ SF Giants, and any team not named Chiefs NFL post season, 2015 looks like yet another exercise in futility, though Miracle Mets ’69 or Olympic Hockey Team US ’80 remains in the hearts if not heads local KC fandom, inspiration annually. I hate being right all the time.
🙂
truth is the chiefs did not have to take a chance on
a bad kid in their first pick. But the chiefs have always
had big hearts for bad boys with lots of talent.
Dale Carter…shooting up Westport nd beyond.
But we never know (as len dawson said) if this was
a good draft until we see these guys play.
Another toss up…but they still need to find another
big time receiver to go with maclin…then its playoff
time.
Chiefs will be looking to make playoffs….Denver should
take the division….so making the playoffs…waiting
for manning to retire…might be their goal.
Either way its going to be an incredible autumn
with royals and chiefs winning this year.
The real winner of the fight Saturday?
The UFC.
No, $100.00 PPV costs, no $3,000 noise bleed seats. Not every fight is in Las Vegas.
And after watching that garbage last week, Ronda Rousey can say she is the best fighter in the world right now.
Dana White, loved that fight because it put more money in his pockets.
x2
again sorry for the no edit, and several errors some by me some by the editor who was busy moving and didn’t have time to post or look at the story much…main thing is HOW ON IT I WAS A DAY BEFORE THE FIGHT, HOW IT WOULD GO, WHO WOULD WIN AND WHY…ALL CORRECT..PICKING THE WINNER WAS NOT HARD, BUT THE WAY THE FIGHT WOULD BE FOUGHT WAS RIGHT ON…THANKS FOR APPRECIATING THAT.
glaze…stop patting yourself on the back. This is the only right
thing you’ve said that was factually correct and not fuzzy math
my grandma picked mayweather…not a tough pick!
What?
the Vegas odds went off at -240 for huge favorite May weather — i.e. — to win a hundred bucks — you’d have to lay down $240 cash
the over/under 12 round odds — i.e. — will it go to a decision — went off at an even higher -290 – meaning betting nearly $300 of your money to win a hundred.
in other words — the fight went exactly as EVERYBODY thought it would –and put their money on it — May weather by decision.
once word got outin vegas that pac was hurt the money
flew onto Floyd.
Think about it….in Nevada everything is out for the buck…
knowing pac couldn’t get any pain “relief” and that
he hadcut back training and brought in a smaller
sparrng partener than the one who hurt him in the
firstplace would definitely change the betting.
there are no secrets in vegas….for money you talk!!!!!!!!!!
Art, as you well know the May Weather was a typo by editor not me, as you can see in the first line of story…be that as it may…the odds were NOT -240, nor was going the distance -300 with a Mayweather win….the odds were 2 to one for a win by Floyd which I clearly was on and the distance and win by Floyd just over even…great bet there…
Mayweather Pacquiao odds: Floyd Mayweather favored at -225
For all you betters our there, here are the latest odds on the fight, via Bovada:
Floyd Mayweather -225
Manny Pacquiao +175
Reminder for those unfamiliar with betting odds – the negative number means Mayweather is the favorite. You would have to bet $225 on him to win $100 (plus your $225 back), while for Pacquiao, you would need to bet $100 to win $175 (again, plus your original $100 back).
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2015/4/29/8515111/mayweather-pacquiao-odds-floyd-mayweather-manny-pacquiao-ppv-betting
Fight to go the distance 33-100
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2444586-mayweather-vs-pacquiao-odds-early-week-vegas-lines-for-championship-fight
i.e. — bet 100 to win 30 , as I said earlier
glaze…wrong again…I saw the odds board and it
was heavy leaning to mayweather.
anyone who thought pac would win had to be
a fool.
no big deal picking a fight winner…especially after
word got out about pacs injury.
The big boys in vegas knew the inside scoop.
You’re on line with all the other amatuers. Vegas
loves guys like you. this was another major
scam on a bunch of sports lovers.
I guarantee the hedge funds (who bet heavy in
vegas)…and the bankersand the big money
guys swung to Floyd early.
The spelling errors were exclusively Craig’s…
May weather’s name was spelled correctly in bold up top and again in the story. Spell correct broke it into two words at the beginning of two sentences, but in the scheme of things, that’s a minor typo.
Sheesh!
This was the fight that was going to revive boxing, instead we got Mayweather hugging like Michael Jackson at a cub scout sleepover. This fight didnt kill boxing but it gave it shakier legs than it already had. As for MMA taking over boxing, bvllshit. MMA cant compete in purse amounts, ppv revenue, or popularity. Granted MMA is gaining a big audience in the states, but globally its not even in the same stratosphere. HBO and Showtime have plenty of quality fights. The era of the Heavyweights is over due to the boring ass Klitchko, but from cruiserweight down to the lights, there are plenty of good matches. You tube Gennady Golovkin or Light Heavy Sergey Kovalev. They dont duck top contenders, just put em to sleep. Any fight with the top mexican fighters of today wont be boring. Boxing isnt as popular as it once was thats for sure and this fight didnt help the cause. I took the 100 dollar ppv bait on mayweather vs pac. I knew better, the fight should have taken place 5 years ago, and it still probably would have been a snooze fest.
