Hearne: ‘99.7 The Point’ Powers It’s Way to Numero Uno

KELLY_POINT_BIO_HEADER(1)There’s a new top gun in town…

Three years in and 99.7 The Point  (the radio station formerly known as KY) has clawed it’s way to the top of the ratings heap in listeners 12 and older, Monday through Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight.

That’s right, a “chick station” now rules Kansas City’s radio roost.

The Point displaces longtime classic rocker (and dude magnet) KCFX FM. Think of this as a really huge deal.

Insiders talk of Point owner Entercom creating a void by blowing up adult contemporary station KUDL FM three years back and then filling it with the younger, hipper Point.

And check out the Point’s half million plus listener cume.

That’s nearly 100,000 more listeners than No. 2, KCFX.

However, that’s not all Entercom’s celebrating today.

Not only does Entercom have four out of the top five stations in adults 25-54, they’ve got the top four stations in the marketplace in adults 18-49.

As for Steel City – the company that bought out Wilks this past year (and for a pretty penny) – it’s fortunes continue to plummet.

Mike Kennedy

Mike Kennedy

Q104 has plunged to 17th place. Sources say Steel City’s new consultant is wreaking havoc with the music programming on both Q and KFKF. Much to the chagrin reportedly of new country hall of fame inductee Mike Kennedy.

As for Cumulus (KCFX, Magic, Jack, The Vibe and Oldies 95 (they hate me calling it that), but outside of the Vibe, their stations are stuck in a time warp with classic rock, classic R&B, classic hits and classic 80s. That’s a lot to have invested almost exclusively in geezer demos.

And surprise, surprise!

Look who showed up in the ratings – the boyz from sports talker WHB.

Somebody must have coughed up some serious cash to pay Nielsen, because the company usually doesn’t publish the ratings of non subscribers.

Speaking of WHB, while a 16th place finish is hardly anything to brag about, that’s still a half a share point better than rival 610 Sports (which by the way has a larger cume).

Unfortunately for WHB, 610 has the Kansas City Royals and the Royals are on fire. Which could make for a long, lonely summer for Kevin Kietzman and company.

Once again The Buzz topped The Rock, which is something everybody is probably going to have to get used to. Newer, younger rock music usually trumps the oldsters. Like when The Rock helped snuff KY102/99.7KY.

Funny thing though, as Rock main man Johnny Dare approaches the Big 5-0h, Buzz head dude Lazlo apparently isn’t all that far behind. There really is no young, hip  up and coming Johnny Dare type right now. Not that I know of anyway.

However sources say Dare still dominates in men listeners.

But one of The Buzz greatest strengths is that it appeals almost equally to both men and women  listeners.

Anyway, on with the ratings…

thanks to god you put this ratings b.s.out!
Now radio dude can grab the lotion and tissues and have his own party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    who’s making the money:
    I assume kcfx/610 (royals)/whb/and mix 93…
would like to see the revenue stats for stations…that’s what counts in the long run.

    • admin says:

You just love to heard the sound of your own words, don’t you, Harley?

And to think, you get the pleasure of hearing those words and thoughts 24/7, while the rest of us here on KC Confidential are limited to a mere blizzard of all caps, misspelled words and self-aggrandizing pomposities.

No wonder we’re all so jealous!

      • 'rhahhararley says:

thanks hearne….I appreciate the ink. Keep these articles
        coming.
You respond to every quote that you put up from Harley.
That’s shows you are also owned by Harley.
You rarely answer others comments…but since mine aggravate and get your attention I’m doing something right.
And I have to correct you constantly because you’ve gotten
        lazy in your work.
Even you have poor grammar/spelling etc…and you own
        this blog.
I write fast…don’t have time to keep correcting your
        fact mistakes on here.
But just like glaze used those stations to get his message..
Harley uses this to get his message out.
Without glaze and I…you’d be just like greg hall….long gone!

      • paulwilsonkc says:

        Don’t touch the poop!

    • radio dude says:

      Harley,
Revenue rank data is even harder to get than ratings data. Only about 10 people in KC Radio have access to Miller Kaplan. However, 610 and WHB are not in the top 5. The majority of Royals revenue goes to the Royals (except for local spots).
So once again Harley asks for something he cannot have.

Why don’t you tell US? After all, Harley knows all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • paulwilsonkck says:

Radio Dude, you can’t wrestle with a pig. It only takes 5 seconds to realize you’re all muddy…..and the pigs enjoying it. We all know he’s a sociopath. Just heed the advice that was given me and “don’t touch the poop.”
He is so wrong he keeps blaming me for the “jewel thief” story when Hearne authored it!
He’s so stupid, he expects us to believe he’s so busy running his multinational conglomerates that he can’t take the time to spell correctly and at least write at a 5th grade level?
He writes the way he does because his mom hasn’t brought his meds down to the basement yet!

        • 'rhahhararley says:

well well well…speaking of pigs!!!!!!!! hahahahahha!
the jewel thief story was just the start…
lets include the exclusive late breaking and 100% true
story on sprint. You were the laughing stock of the
          campus then…you know nothing.
the thief story…you got caught in the suv and saw
          a space invader!!!with big antennas…thought it was
          cia/fbi….when you knew nothing.
          stalker case…another b.s. story
shoes in Lawrence..the cobbler story…another joke
had by my people …one who said…”this guys a joke”..
          come onnow…get that 10K together boy…
you won’t put up so shut up…and the Africa deal….hahahahah! give me a breakdude…
you’re all bacon grease and no bacon!!!!!
Harley beatyou in every election comment…beat you
in every local event comment….and now I make you
          look like a fool.

        • Radio dude says:

Thanks, Paul! Good advice. I have tangled with him before….proven his comments have no truth, yet he continues his mindless rants. I do believe everyone who reads KCC feels the same way as you do.

          • paulwilsonkck says:

Too bad he doesn’t know who you really are, what you’ve done in the past and what you’re doing today! But that would make him look even more uninformed and irrelevant.

          • 'rhahhararley says:

            WRONG AGAIN WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
            will you ever be right!!!!!!!
just like you its “done”…not “doing”

        • whitten pell says:

Seeing a second reason to write….while someone the other day suggested that using a real name might come back at them vis their work…after thinking about that I have this to say. If you have any gravitas and respect at all in whatever job you may have, posting here is not going to cost you anything. Especially if you have something to say sans the childlike comments, that are fairly common with folks that hide and don’t really have what it takes to speak out without hiding or name calling. Now if you are just some paycheck nobody that is easy to replace, then by all means I get it. Which I suspect might be the case here. However where I come from we don’t hide.

Hearne lets have lunch one day soon.

          • Stomper says:

            Sigh,

Whitten, I would guess it’s me you are calling a “paycheck nobody that is easy to replace”. Radio Dude schooled you so now it’s me you’re insulting? I wish I would have known that employment counselor was also on your lengthy resume. You say you thought about it before writing this comment so that speaks volumes. Hearne, you are welcome to let him know my identity if you choose to have lunch with Whitten. Paul, Dwight and a number of others that write and/or comment here already know my identity.

          • admin says:

            I’m in, Whitten…

The slogging can get a little rough here in the comments section, but I think you definitely added worth to the discussion.

It gave me pause to think, anyway

      • 'rhahhararley says:

        radio dude…here’s the deal…
just found out howto get the info…
we get it from private sources….nothing illegal…
but the foxand whb were 1/2 in oct/November in revenue…
but that was because of baseball/playoffsand chiefs…
don’t worry radio dude….now that phony ratings re out
you can go find a girl friend….
        don’t doubt Harley………wait and see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Old Man Kissel says:

“Unfortunately for WHB, 610 has the Kansas City Royals and the Royals are on fire. Which could make for a long, lonely summer for Kevin Kietzman and company.”

And that has been said by 610 and WHB haters since Whitlock and company left to start the station. Hasen’t happend has it? 610 will get their annual Royals boost, then of course things go back to normal.

    810 scooped 610 once again…

    • admin says:

Don’t be so sure, Old Man…

This is the first time the Royals have been this hot since WHB went sports. And sSome of the station’s personalities are approaching – if not at – the age Don Fortune was when the laughed him out of town for being an oldster.

I’ve actually listened some to 610 lately because of the NCAA tourney and just to check it out and it’s highly listenable.

WHB’s personalities – certainly Kietzman anyway – tend to be more outspoken, but there’s something refreshing about listening to knowledgeable sports talk that doesn’t hit you over the head telling you how smart the hosts are.

      • Old Man Kissel says:

I’ve heard it before. Don’t by into the hype.

You can wright a 2,000,000 word column about the downfall of WHB and the rise of 610 it still wouldn’t be anything that hasn’t been said since Whitlock went to Entercom.

The sun rises in the east. The sun sets in the west. Death, taxes and 610 gets its Royals bump, but in fall and winter things so back to normal. Wash, rinse and repeat.

        810 scoops 610 once again…

      • 'rhahhararley says:

        wrong again hearne….that’s a satellite feed…not local
        announcers on tourney games.
Keitzman doesn’t do play by play .
        He’s an opinion guy.
theres a difference between a game broadcaster and
a on air guy like kietzman who’s paid to elicit responses
and phone calls and express his opinion. Comprende?

        • admin says:

What are you even talking about, Harley…

Of course Kietzman doesn’t do play by play. Nice job of trying to put words in my mouth, then pronounce me wrong.

You sure you didn’t hit your head real hard here recently?

      • radio dude says:

Gotta agree with Old Man Kissel…. admin.
KCSP had a monster cume last October from playoffs and World Series. However they could not hold on to any of that increased audience that tuned in 610 to hear the World Series.
If you remember, that was a point you made on one of your articles.
As anyone in media will tell you M-F 6a-7p are all media buyers care about. However, that won’t stop Entercom from 12+6a-
12m bragging rights. Those rights will come with the release of April trend as the Royals are right now the hottest team in baseball. As you stated, it is always a long hot summer in KC.

        • admin says:

I do recall 610 losing most of that cume…

Here’s my take though, gut level only.

I actually spent some time listening to the 610 guys recently and they’re pretty easy on the ears. Unlike some past 610 personalities.

I don’t think there are any Kevin Kietzman or Nick Wrights in the mix yet, but I could be wrong.

And I do wonder whether KK and some of the guys who’ve been humping it at WHB for like 20 years now, aren’t wearing out their welcomes in comparison to the fresh, young voices on 610.

The playoffs and World Series was a flash in the pan and I don’t think listeners spent enough time familiarizing themselves with 610’s air talent, thus their hasty exits.

However, with seven months ahead of them, 610 has a chance to get under some listener’s skins and they well may do it.

I still hear lots of complaints about all the talking commercials and endorsements on WHB. Plus that KK turns a lot of people off.

Too bad 610 doesn’t have Nick Wright still. Did I hear he wasn’t doing that well in Texas? Do I feel a homecoming coming on?

          Eh, probably not

          • 'rhahhararley says:

also hearne you’re wrong most of the time.
sorry…but I have to constantly correct yu.
Radio dude says you’re wrong and obviously
he knows something about the biz and you
            come backat him.
Hearne…you’re wrong. 610 did well in
October but revenues there were below
the fox and whb in octobere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so what good does having a lotof people
            listen one month .
            Radiodude provesyou wrong.
            the dude proves you wrong.
            You battle with glaze constantly.
you argue and try to tear down Harley.
without us 4 you have no one whocan bring
sme real world experience into these
            godly articles.
Oh…sorry…if w want british literary history
you do have agreat expert on that subject!!!!!!

          • admin says:

This Harley post reminds me of an expression my dad used to use about a “broken record”

          • Old Man Kissel says:

Once again nothing new. Heard aall of this from haters since Whitlock v. KK. Hasen’t happend.

            810 scoops 610 once again…

      • Gerald Bostock says:

Fortune wasn’t run out because he was old. It was because his knowledge of sports was paper-thin (on TV, you just have to read scripts and bask in your minimal local fame) and that minor celebrity wasn’t sufficient, especially when he didn’t have the radio skills to hold the attention of listeners. 810 folks don’t have to worry about getting old as long as they don’t lapse into cluelessness (some are likelier candidates than others).

        • admin says:

That’s certainly true in part, Gerald…

However, the WHB guys also hammered him for being a geezer and suggested that contributed to his lack of knowledge.

        • Radio dude says:

And he sold his house with dog piss stains.

          • admin says:

Actually, I was the one who reported that story.

Fortune positioned his furniture over the stains and the buyer didn’t discover them until fortune moved his furniture out

    • 'rhahhararley says:

I will have the comparison between those who listen to the royals
and those who watch it on tv.
I doubt there’s much “real listening” done when the team is on tv at
      7pm.
But I’m sure those phony numbers will show different…who wants
to hear those old worn out voices on a squeaky am station when you
get hi def and 2 really good announcers on the fox station.
That’s my opinion…but I doubt 610 tgets many listeners when the
team is on tv…although ii’m sure 610 will contest that.
Lets see what ya got 610! I think maybe the oldsters stilllike the
radio announcers (zzzzzzzzzzboring)….but when you can watch the
game in hi def like you’re at the park why turn on that faded signal
      of 610.
I’m sure many will agree…and I’m sure 610 will barrel in to respond.

      • mike t. says:

dunno about ‘squeaky’ or ‘faded’, Harley. 610 AM comes in clear as a bell on my car and home radios. in fact, reception is very good south on I-35 until you hit the Flint Hills, then gets pretty static-y. (years ago, when it was 61 Country, I listened to david lawrence almost all the way in to Tulsa. not sure what happened to their signal.)

as for listening to the games on radio vs watching them on TV… on radio, I don’t need to be planted in a chair, or hurt my neck staring down at a phone or tablet. more freedom, including keeping up while in the car. if the p-b-p guy does a good job, I don’t need to watch it, I ‘see’ it just fine.

now that said, denny, phyisioc and even levebre aren’t the best. I think Matthews should have retired a few years ago. he can still call the action, but he sounds bored half the time. ryan is pretty good, but, eh… and physioc… well, he has a great voice.

(and before you say it, I am NOT 610 or have any affiliation with them aside from being a listener sometimes.)

        • 'rhahhararley says:

nice comments but I said after 7pm….
Whowould listen to that horrible on air radio
crew when you can watch and enjoy in hi def
…….even the many bars don’t play the local
          610 when a game ison.
When chiefs are o many of the bars play the
          local kcfx radio broadcast.
I’m just not into am radio likethe old guys on here
are. infact I listen to Sirius…..Pandora…..
notinto the old old guys fallin asleep on 610.

        • admin says:

610 has always been a powerful signal, mike t…

          You are correct.

WHB is the station with the suspect signal. That’s how they got in trouble with that FM they owned for a bit. They started simulcasting Royals games at night to reach areas the AM signal wasn’t hitting and it triggered an expensive lawsuit that put WHB behind the 8 ball for several years – if not still some today.

      • Denny all the way says:

I might be the exception. But I prefer the radio broadcast. Can’t real stand Hudler. nice enough guy but not the best announcer. Denny is the best in my opinion. I really miss the days where you could mute the tv and listen to radio while watching TV.

        • mike t. says:

well, you still can if you don’t mind the delay between the audio and visual. in my case, radio can be anywhere between 2 and 5 seconds ahead.

when I do this, I actually like the delay, because I can hear it real time, and if I’m not paying attention to the screen, have a few moments to see the play.

        • admin says:

I think lots of people over the years have opted to watch TV and listen to the radio cast, Denny…

          You’re far from alone.

  3. hmmm says:

Hmmm, baseball is played 6 months a year and baseball on 610 is part of the programming…….so maybe when baseball is played that is NORMAL and at the end of baseball season WHB get’s it’s bump. If WHB could pay their bills ( they have stiffed both the Royals and the Chiefs on rights fees) maybe they could acquire some play by play other than K-State. One thing is for sure….WHB is getting old and boring and 610 is getting bigger.

    • admin says:

      Here’s the wild card…

WHB must be hurting some but they also had to dig up probably $200,000 – plus or minus – to get Nielsen ratings again after all this time.

It’s a sales tool that they could not afford to pay for but can’t afford to be in business without either probably.

Trust me, I know these guys and coughing up $200K is not the sort of expenditure they take lightly. That they could come up with that kind of cash is an eye opener as well.

However that’s what Nielsen requires to get those numbers and this is the first time I’ve seen them posted in ages.

  4. radio dude says:

You gotta give Entercom big kudos for this report “and Hearne did”. Having four of the top five stations in Persons 25-54 is more than a home run….it’s a GRAND SLAM!
They were helped along the way by Steel City Media. KFKF and KBEQ have been two of KC’s most successful radio stations….for years and years.

Then a new owner who paid a whopping $105 million have tanked two stations and unable to find the right handle to improve a third in only a matter of months. Only Mix has remained steady.

Let’s put this purchase of these stations in the proper perspective. At $105 million that averages a little over $26 million per station. Meanwhile, David Field does a slight of hand trick and buys 9 stations in markets like Denver, San Diego and Miami from Lincoln Financial for $115 million. That averages a little less than $13 million per station. Bigger deal, bigger stations bigger markets.

One really has to wonder “what the hell were they thinking”? And now two stations have lost 1/2 of their listeners. Entercom is in for a nice long run of the ratings success with these competitors. That is not to take away anything from Entercoms’ stations, as they are all solid sounding stations (OK, except for KMBZ AM)

    • admin says:

      Good stuff, Radio Dude…

I can’t wait for Whitten Pell to come school you here again.

      • whitten pell says:

Hearne I said my piece and commenting further will not be rewarding.. keep up the hiding as many will have no issue responding to paper thin folks……have fun and make sure to let everyone know how much you all know…have a great day…

    • 'rhahhararley says:

i’ll figure out the flow on these stations…entercom ha been around a long time…smart people hose owners….but I wonder what their
      return really is…
entercom is publically traded so they have so much cash and money.
guys at kfkf/kbeq are privately owned and to borrow 105 million
they gotta have some serious financials.

  5. 'rhahhararley says:

q and kfkf are still good country stations.
whoever owns them has probably not understood radio market.
Nice write up radio dude…..and you took hearne to the woodshed for another
    beating!!!!
    hearne…you know nothing about radio…..
    but remember…these things change monthly……
but if you read the story about the dudes who bought kfkf/kbeq…..they got
more money than they know what to do with….and just like hearne…a daddy
financed his kids to run those stations…..see how well it worked.
But all these owners got big money…..

  6. chuck says:

Harley’s internal dialogue while reading this story.

“Cool, a chick station. I get chicks, well, no, but if I did, I would listen to a chick station and get even more chicks, maybe if I listed to this station, chicks would talk to me, Hearne is stupid, who cares about chicks, I do, Hearne is stupid, but he gets chicks, so that means I can get chicks too, does he listen to chick stations, if he does it is probably chick stations that Glaze told him about, then they went out in Glazes Corvette, no, he has another car, my car is broke, fu*k, where am I gonna get a water pump for a 1998 Mazda Bongo? my mom says no more bucks for the Bongo and I need to get a job, I wonder what Hearne pays Glazer to write his dumb articles, he is always wrong about his bets, I think, I am pretty sure he is wrong, I thing I will take a picture of my dick with my cell phone, I am hungry, maybe I should go out and sit in the Bongo and listen to a chick station and see if some girls walk by my house, there are hot chicks in Knob Town, it’s only a matter of time, I am still young, 55 is the new 30, look at Glazer, he gets chicks, these radio numbers are so hard to understand, who cares anyway? SHIT! pull your pants up Harley, mom is coming down the stairs, ok, she isn’t, why doesn’t this cell phone camera work anymore? my dick looks so small, there must be an app that would help, these numbers are stupid, I hate typing with my pants down and my dick out, but this damn thing won’t focus and I need to set these morons on kcconfidential straight i am absolutely the man when it comes to numbers, I remember going to Vgas with the Kaufmans, well I remember reading about them going to Vegas and that was when I first got cable and watched Oceans 11, and so, it was just like I was there with them, in fact, it was just like I was there with Frank and Sammie, Chuck HATES Sammy, if only he could have known Sammy like I knew Sammy, even then, then he would like Obama Care, ENTERCOM, ha ha…, they should have named it ENTERCOME and made it a porn sight, hey! my dick is still out and maybe I should check out a little porn and THEN take that picture of my dick, 25 to 24, man those were the days, my Bongo was running great and I was only in my 40’s, but hey, Glaze is almost 60, I am close and 60 is the new 35, so, maybe I will go out and sit in my Bongo, speaking of Bongo, this little bastard is starting to come to life! SHIT!! my mom, no, wow…, that was close, WHB, heh, heh, I remember now, back when I used to tell everyone it meant World’s Horniest Broadcasters, god that was funny! chicks love a sense of humor, I can’t type, take this picture and watch for my mom, so, shit, who cares about these stupid numbers? I am going out to sit in the car and look cool, gotta post this first, for my many, many fans, Hearne is so dumb.

        • Radio dude says:

Harley, you have made some pretty good comments over time…..,but some of these latest comments make you look a little crazy.
Dude, lighten up or you will lose any credibility with anyone who reads these posts.
Man, you look like a friggin nut job.
I am willing to take your rant and response because no one who reads this will take anything Harley says about Radio Dude seriously.
Are you really that crazy? or is it just a role that you play for the shock factor?
If anyone ever discovers who Harley really is…talk about killing credibility or self infliction or losing touch with reality.
I have to say this, most readers here won’t read any more than 20% of your rants….you really need to stop living in whatever world that haunts you and focus what these readers want….. local, live and

  7. chuck says:

but chuck is old and has the most vile hateful comments including
his racist comments that were found by hearne to be false lies!
Me taking on chuk…would be like me going into john knox villag
and pushing over a man in a wheelchair.
Don’t fight…I’m in great shape but chuck ain’t what heusedto be.
And I never get into aight with someone who has nothing to lose!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • I believe and support every word Harley just said there. I have seen Harley in the gym. I always depend on Harley when I read this blog for the truth.

In fact, I was with Harley in Vegas with the Kaufmans. It was right after I got shot down by the Red Baron in WWI. I was still recuperating and Harley asked me to meet him and the Rat Pack at the Sahara. Harley’s family owned it. Those were the days.

  9. nero says:

Any breakdown of Petro and Kietzman vs their same time 610 competition?

  10. Sean says:

This is just my two cents based on other sports-talk listeners I’ve been around, but I don’t know anybody my age or younger (I’m 32) who listens to 810 on a regular basis. It might be better more in-depth coverage, but it lacks any notion of entertainment and I think 610 has done pretty well in that regard.

Danny Parkins is the best thing they have going because he straddles the line between being witty and sometimes fairly opinionated. (Still, it’s a shame Nick Wright left.) Kietzman is a douche and I think I’d have to be hit with laughing gas to find him at all humorous.
