Glazer: The Seven Degrees of ‘King of Sting’

TJ-Miller-Bio

TJ Miller

You’ve heard of the seven degrees of separation…

Last night’s Academy Awards had several strange ties to Kansas City and Stanford & Sons. Most of all comic/actor TJ Miller‘s movie Big Hero 6 won best animated picture.

Miller is a close friend of mine and did his first headlining gig as a comic at Stanford’s at The Legends six years ago. In fact his mother’s from the Kansas City area. She along with TJ’s entire family attended all of his shows here the first time. And they attended most of his shows the next several times he came to do stand up at our club.

TJ’s career is off the chart.

Check him out on IMBD.COM. His film and television credits are second to none for a climbing superstar of the last half decade. Right now,  he stars in Big Hero 6, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Transformers 4 with Mark Wahlberg. He’s also shooting and starring in The Deadpool and just finished Hell and Back. S

Miller’s over 50 credits include the movies Unstoppable, Get Him to The Greek, Yogi Bear, She’s Out of Your League, Cloverfield, Rock of Ages and, well, the list is too long. Oh, and he’s the star of HBO’s smash hit Silicon Valley.

I hired TJ just after he did Cloverfield.

He was a charismatic young comic and actor who grew up in Denver but had not headlined an A comedy club yet. Yet he was such a prince of a guy, and his family was so warm and kind.

John Stamos

John Stamos

Like most young guys in this business I’ve met, Miller worked his ass off to get his breaks.

TJ befriended my brothers as well, especially my young brother Jack who adored TJ. A couple years back when TJ got the call at Stanfords to be in Tom Cruise‘s Rock of Ages, Jack was present.

As he left the club, TJ told Jack how nervous he was to work with Cruise.

And Jack said to TJ, “Hey, don’t be nervous – he’s lucky to be working with you. You’re on your way to the top.”

My little brother was killed in a car wreck shortly after that night and TJ flew back to Kansas City to be with my brother and I right after it happened. What a wonderful person.

In fact Miller organized a fund raiser for Jack a couple weeks later and came back to star in that one night stand for free.

There were other interesting connections in last nights gala.

Including the smash hit American Sniper. It was directed by Clint Eastwood  and produced by Robert Lorenz who I’d had been working for the last couple years with Eric Eisner for my KING OF STING.

Rob loved it, but we just couldn’t get there with an actor the studio wanted. Rob even helped rewrite the script. I could have stayed with them, but Clint needs Rob to work on his films and I feared for too a long wait.

Who knows? They’re all great guys, but I recently made a deal with another production company.

Jim-Jefferies

Et tu, Jefferies?

I saw John Stamos on the awards show last night.

It seems odd, but TJ Miller invited me to Tom Jones birthday bash in LA last June.

I was there working on King of Sting – of course I went – and wrote about it here.

Stamos was the co host of the bash at this huge mansion and it was a star studded event.

In fact, he played the drums for Tom Jones and TJ brought his fiancee.

This past weekend, Dave Coulier was our star at Stanfords. And Dave and John starred together in Full House, the hit tv series.

I still talk to Rob Lorenz – what a talent he is as well.

I hope one day I’ll get to work with Miller on a film or television project. He told me a few years back, “Hey Craig, I will always be loyal to you for helping me in comedy. Even when I am a big star I’ll play your club.”

I hear that all the time and usually when comics become big film or tv stars they go to theaters only to return as their careers wind down.

Examples of that are, Larry the Cable Guy, Lisa Lampanelli and Jim Jefferies.

I do understand it, although it’s always painful.

However from May 14-18 TJ Miller will be at the new Stanfords in Overland Park.

Uh, no – he sure doesn’t need our money – he’s a very busy guy. But he’s a prince of a man and I’m so proud of him and glad for his success. He’s earned it.

  2. Weeza says:

May be just me, but having a 20 second spot in a movie would not warrant listing as an accomplishment for someones career that is “off the chart” You, are a tool

    • CG says:

You need to kill yourself and quick moron. The guy co starred in Transformers 4 this years largest grossing pix. Plus about 50 other films and tv shows…again go shoot yourself as fast as you can before someone finds out who you are and does it for you..you are moron of the year…”President Obama, like anyone cares what he thinks, he’s a nobody..” thats you tool king.

      • Dog says:

He costarred in “Transformers 4”? The movie billing has him in ninth position after BingBing Li. Maybe he was a robot???????

        • CG says:

I know and his movie that he starred in main voice WON THE OSCAR THATS WHY HE WAS THERE. Kinda like you huh?

          • Weeza says:

I want part of raising the flag at Kaufmann. I was in the crowd for all the playoff games, that make me a part of the team, right asswipe?

  3. KCMonarch says:

…but we just couldn’t get there with an actor the studio wanted.

Was it that Rutger Hauer wasn’t available or he was asking for too much?

  4. hahhararley says:

you are a combination of brian Williams and bill orealey….both with heads
as big as blimps and more b.s. that anyon e else.
after the Oscar I believe you are conning usw
got email todaythat makes your story seem kind of weak.
but the sheep in kc will believe anything.
optioning means nothing…check the stats..and holywood is moving
away from the violent gun shows….see who st won. hawking/birdman/hotel…
they’re hardly a violent movie with no serious way to end the story.
give ussome more infoon the people you’re working with.We will see
    how you stand
plus if he’s not a bigstar (andi hardly heard of him_) he says “when he makes
it big he’llstill come palayyour place.
if the guys so busy…whats h e doing in Kansas.
    Harleysmells fish.
nothing personal butjust that he’s not really that big yet.
hope he does becom big name star…but the short cameos mean nothing…..
    tom jones…he’s your hero?
    regardless we wish you luck

  5. CG says:

wow never read from so many jealous folks. TJ is as big a star as any young actor has ever been, his next stop his own major prod. company on a major studio lot. I’m surprised people would even show how little they are by writing such stupid crap, but you are all fake name folks and so you do it to try and piss me off…TJ is HUGE, nobody bigger that is a young star NOBODY. He makes in a month what you trolls make in a lifetime.

As for optioning a movie to a major, well it pays in the six figures..I know I have done it many times. How many you get optioned? For that matter how many people do you know who have? PS I also made a few pix, like Champions Forever with Ali….twice…

Enough on that B.S. It never ceases to amaze me that some people are so hateful and for no reason. Your failed lives have nothing to do with this story.

Its like this…”oh they finally made Glazer’s movie, huh, a hit huh, big deal, lets see him do it again, anybody can make one.” End of story.

    • Bill says:

Jesus, Glaz. TJ Miller is 33 years old. I can list five WOMEN under 33 who are bigger stars than TJ Miller. Off the top of my head there is Jennifer Lawerence, Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick, Emma Stone and Shailene Woodley.

That is five women. I could name a dozen more males who are under 33 and bigger stars than TJ Miller. Wake up man before you make outrageous claims.

  6. CG says:

Why is TJ coming to my club? We are friends. The money doesn’t matter. Maybe you should try having one.

    • hahhararley says:

and he hasnothing better going on….if he had a sackfull of hot
babes ya think he’d come to kc????????????????
      give me a break.
you’re getting to sound like an old man glaze…stop it.
      enojgh with the b.s.
      we know better

  7. CG says:

Like I said, I shouldn’t respond. But some of these no name losers are just that. Someone has to put them in their place. TJ might read this and laugh..hah…so sad to see so many hateful people out there and for no reason…life is tough…most of us have dreams that never happen…I have done quite a bit…want my movie made but its been one hell of a ride. TJ Miller has realized all his dreams and more to come. Learn from it trolls.

  8. chuck says:

I am always happy to hear about local boys making it big.

Jason Sudeikis and Paul Rudd are cool!

Me, I hope the film gets made and kills it at the box office.

What is cooler than local guys coming clear outta their shoes swinging for the fences?

  9. artemmis says:

“I hear that all the time and usually when comics become big film or tv stars they go to theaters only to return as their careers wind down.

Examples of that are, Larry the Cable Guy, Lisa Lampanelli and Jim Jefferies.”

    ——–

actually — Aussie comic star Jefferies, at the top of his game, still playing theaters-
like his gig right here in KC – at the Midland theater on March 13 — followed by another comic star -John Mulroney a week later.

ps — it’s “six” degrees of separation.

  10. hahhararley says:

when the repubs questioned obamas birth…he showed us his birth cert.
prove yourself. With something as big as making a big time movie scan
the paperwork and let us see what the agreement is.
that way you can close down the deniers.
When oreally denied he lied …which he did….he tried to find somebody
to verify his story..like the photo…and produce news reports which he
    couldn’t.
Prove it to us and we’ll be silent………

    • CG says:

Harley if this is you and I hope its not old shmo…right, when you send us a naked photo of you and your private parts…sure thing. I have nothing to prove folks my film deals are usually in print like the last one in Variety or Hollywood Reporter. Nobody prints their contracts, nobody. I know this isn’t you, only a moron would write that.

      • paulwilsonkc says:

        Trust me, it’s him…

        • hahhararley says:

      • hahhararley says:

SORRY GLAZE: this is the dumbest response ever. These people
want to see if what you say is true.
So show them down like I shut up the shoedog and sent
        him to his dog house;
With people like those you make them put what little
money they have on the line. I did it with shoedog and he’s
shut his mouth since because he knows Harley will make
        him look like a jackass.
        Tell the non believers….bring 10,000 cash…we’ll go
to an arbitrator….you’ll see the pertinent info then
winner takes all. It will scare them off like jackrabbits.
I proved it with shoedog and once and for all he
is speechless and wondering what to do.

I’ve been your biggest supporter in every way…………don’t
fuck over a friend. Many people have said you let yor
partner to die. I don’t know…but screwing your friends
is not a smart way to live life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Skeptic says:

Six figures? Pay Johnny Dare the money you him, chump.

  12. Lance The Intern says:

You got Screech at Stanford and Sons this week, and you have the balls to disrespect Jim Jefferies?

  13. Hot Carl says:

Glaze, I think the problem here is that you seem to equate knowing “stars” with being a success. You write in one of your comments “I have done quite a bit” when all you’ve really done is the same thing we ALL do. You go to work, you work hard and you get paid for it. So do the majority of the readers of Hearne’s site. What you’ve done is nothing special and the commenters like to remind you of that because I think sometimes your ego gets the best of you.

I hope your movie gets made. Whether your book was true or a bunch of bullsh*t doesn’t really matter. It was fairly entertaining and would make a decent flick if it’s made by somebody with some talent.

  14. CG says:

EVERYTHING here is an attack on the writer, everything…I know I’m just like you thats why there is a book about my life…we all do the same things…TJ is not much and I’m everything bad and hired Screech…ps I introduced Jim J along with 100 other stars to KC dork…and more than once..by the way Screech, Dustin, is pretty damn funny…he is..no not a Jim J but funny.

As far as what I do or don’t do or didn’t do…Hot Carl and thanks for the hope the movie gets made,in some respects everyone is the same…but my life even today is different than most anyones in KC and way different in years past..just is…sorry.

    • Hot Carl says:

A book written about your life? YOU wrote it! This is kind of what I’m talking about. Your ego gets in the way.

Yes, I guess if you consider meeting some celebrities and spending time in the clink “different” you are correct. I’ve met celebrities, own my own company, haven’t spent any time in the clink and have banged loads of hot broads. My life is “different” from yours. It doesn’t make mine better or worse. But in your mind, I guess us commenters aren’t “somebody” because we haven’t written a 99 cent book about ourselves.

You make it difficult to like you and pull for you sometimes. I’m sure you’re a nice guy in person. But when you get on here and bloviate about how great you are you’re not doing yourself any favors.

  15. hahhararley says:

    glaze these guys arephonies.
show them the option contract and move on.
that way the deniers look like fools.
hearne can scan it and post it.
    good luck
    be safe
    your friend
    Harley

  16. roots says:

I saw the new Adam Carolla Podcast news girl (the “Robin Quivers”) Gina Grad is from KU and grew up in KC. Any connections to Stanford’s?

  17. Goose13 says:

Took my kids to see Transformers 4. TJ was hilarious in the movie. They should not have killed him so soon or not at all. The movie was better with him in it. CG, make your movie, I look forward to seeing it. Best of luck.

  18. CG says:

Glad there was so much interest in TJ and the story…I’ll keep you all posted on everything and more when TJ comes to KC…as well as film progress.
