Glazer: Run Alex, Run & This Week’s Picks

Alex+Smith+St+Louis+Rams+v+Kansas+City+Chiefs+FOhZ6wB4F5slThe pain is fading from the Kansas City Chiefs unexpected loss to the lowly Raiders

So what’s next? One reason the Chiefs offense has slowed a bit is that quarterback Alex Smith is not running with the ball. He’s been one of our key weapons, especially on third down. I know his shoulder is banged up, but he’s had four weeks rest now on the injury and his running was a big part of the Chiefs winning.

Granted Thursday was a mess with the rain, but…

ONE BIG RUN might have made the difference.

Think back to us only getting 3 not 7 on the Raiders fumble at their 11 yard line in the second quarter. An Alex run might scored and saved the game. The final five games are all going to be tough. The three at home must yield at least two wins and we need one on the road.

Arizona and the Steelers will be uphill.

The Raiders here is a likely win and then we have Denver and the Chargers. Three wins in 5 games puts the Chiefs in wild card dance…..again. This year is insane though that anything can happen. And it no longer feels that good. A Chiefs win at home with Denver is nearly a must now.

Missouri is down to two games and today at Tennessee is going to be a battle. I like MU in this one. K-State had a nice win this past week, so they are still in the Big 12 hunt, but are the least likely team to win out. Both MU and K-State have played well this season thus far.

MU will gain more respect with a win today. And how cool would an MU and Alabama match up be for the SEC title? MU would be a major dog but in a season like this….anything could happen.

CG I have you at 12 wins and 48 losses this year. 25% – unofficially. Any comments besides the favorites are not covering this year?

    • CG says:

WELL if thats true I guess I know nothing about sports. My picks are stupid. I am not up on the game like all you guys. I have been doing this online for four years. My numbers were outstanding and nobody cared then…its life lets attack the big dog..that’s America…I get it…I went to Vegas several times on big bets..posted..won almost all of them…there were no comments then…so that’s the way it goes….I think I won a few more than 12 bro but who is counting…YOU ARE…I think you are off a shade. I had several ..500 weeks….but no its been a bad year…and hey HAPPENS..nobody else in this market calls any games with points weekly nobody..this is why its tough…

But dumb me will struggle along…I will confess terrible year for me, the worst ever…I’m not alone but that’s no excuse…the national guys are in same boat.

I was just curious if you were even keeping track of your horrid picks. You certainly were when you claimed to be hitting 70%. I pulled 12 and 48 right out of my…..

Pulling numbers out of your…officially qualifies you as an expert here. Now, just drop your I.Q. 30 points, lose any self awareness or morality you may have and Hearne will let you write your own column(s)!

I like Miami plus the points-7.5
    The Broncos look bad.

New England is -7 over Detroit, I like the Patriots.

San Diego, lock of the week, -5 over St. Louis.

I like Indy -14 over the Jags, no one will stop throwing, no prevent. I like the over, 50 on this game. No one can run.

I like the over on Green Bay – Vikings at 48.

I like Dallas -4 against the Giants.

  3. Kerouac says:

And now, another missive from the dismissive one, Kerouac…

“quarterback Alex Smith is not running with the ball”

    – fran tarkenton ran with the ball…

roman gabriel ran with the ball…

bobby douglass ran with the ball…

marlin briscoe ran with the ball…

greg landry ran with the ball…

randall cunningham ran with the ball…

kordell stewart ran with the ball…

rich gannon ran with the ball…

steve mcnair ran with the ball…

michael vick ran with the ball…

tyler thigpen ran with the ball…

tim tebow ran with the ball…

Of those ‘dirty dozen’, remembered almost as much (or more so, some cases) for their running than their passing prowess (a couple exceptions), they won ZERO Superbowl Championships – 0 for 6 all told. Great athletes some, but no cigar smokers any.

Outside exceptions such as Bob Griese, Roger Staubach, John Elway and Steve Young, four QB’s who ran the ball with alpomb at times but were all superior to KCindy’s Alex Smith as a passer, running QB’s often end up hurting themselves & their team.

Excitement to be sure, results not so much. KC’s Tyler Thigpen still lingers memory, his razzle-dazzle might have actually produced many more wins/post season too had the Chiefs had a semblance of a defense then.

Washington’s Robert Griffin III is the latest example talent not equating Championship or a ‘QB’ in the strict sense the word, moreso an athlete; ditto Cam Newton, even more talented, arguably. Until he started getting up in age (retired at 40), Len Dawson was a constant for the Chiefs, no injuries that kept him out for the long term save 1969, when another running moreso than passing whiz filled in half a dozen games, Mike Livingston (another good athlete, not so great & in fact mechanical looking in his motion / delivery trying to be a legit, proficient QB.)

Already tilting toward free fall, the Chiefs lose Smith to injury the drop-off (even smurf Daniel handing the ball off Charles et al) would be evident. Two shrimp backups: Daniel (listed a generous 6’0, maybe 5’9 1/4 if that reality, it appears to me) and Murray, also listed as 6’0 (in his dreams). The latter short on experience & the former short an arm, no Smith relegates slim chance KCindy make post season none at all.

All that to say: Chiefs are still as a Hoover vacuum, now 45 years strong… the Oakland Raiders thank them for their as always reliability.

    🙂

3 and 1 so far, will be 4 and 1 and every team I picked won…so I do kinda know a little bit.

telling us to bet against the lions in November doesn’t make you a guru, just someone who has been alive and watched football.
