I’ve talked Chiefs, I’ve talked Royals, now I need to talk Kansas Jayhawks basketball…
In a classic basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas won in triple overtime by a score of 109-106. There were more than 20 lead changes. Even Dick Vitale called it a classic many times before the triple overtime.
Until recently, Kansas basketball really was the area’s only elite sports franchise for decades. Then Bill Self coached this college to two national title games and one championship over the last 10 years. Self has won 11 straight Big 12 titles. That may never happen again.
Self is ‘The Man” when it comes to area coaches.
The last few seasons it seemed as if Self was coaching just to win the Big 12 rather than looking to get to the Final Four. KU has the name so of late they are often ranked as a top seed or a 2 seed with teams that were not as good as his past groups. During this time Self has had several one and dones that didn’t really help his cause towards a final four.
This year is different.
Self’s core group this year has experience and several seasons at Kansas.
And it’s showing up on the court.
He has a real team this year that plays together and with purpose. Players like Perry Ellis are proving they are perhaps NBA worthy. Ellis had been considered just a very good college player, but now he looks like a second round NBA draft pick. And Frank Mason is right behind him. Ellis has a 16 points per game average and Mason 13. Wayne Seldon adds 15 points per game. They beat an outstanding OU team led by NBA first rounder Buddy Hield. Hield has averaged 26 a game and climbing.
What a year for KC sports fans; the Royals win a World Series; the Chiefs are in the playoffs with a 10 game win streak and now KU basketball’s ranked No. 1 in the nation.
