Glazer: Scribe Says Chiefs Need to Step It up on Offense

Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 3.42.44 PMHey, you can’t argue with any road win in the NFL…

And the KC Chiefs looked good on the scoreboard with a 20 point win at Baltimore 34 – 14. However, their offense was once again playing the short game – playing not to turn it over – playing it safe.

Maybe too safe.

It’s likely now that the Chiefs will go to the postseason. And that’s great after starting 1-5, we all know that. Their defense is one of the NFL’s best. Yet one can argue, Who did we really defeat?

Right now KC ranks third best in the AFC behind New England and Pittsburgh. At this point we would be tied with Denver and Bengals for third best. And since we don’t play any playoff teams in the next two weeks, it will be hard to say how good KC really is right now.

Make no mistake in this injury filled season the Chiefs are a good team.

However we just don’t show enough offense to scare the big boys.

It might be there, it might not.

alex_smith_49ers_640-600x337Chiefs coach Andy Reid and his staff keep Chiefs QB Alex Smith on hold. He’s not called upon to take many if any real chances downfield.

Therefore we don’t practice the deep ball in live games very much. The Chiefs began running out the clock late in the second period then got burned on a hail mary with four seconds left for a touchdown by off-the-street quarterback Jimmy the Notre Dame guy quarterback.

Our answer was to hand off in second half, throw short and hope for a Baltimore mistake. They finally made one and defensive rookie of the year Marcus Peters took it 90 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He had another INT later.

I think Chiefs fans are all thinking pretty much the same way.

We can beat average and below NFL teams, but can we beat top teams like New England, the Steelers, the Panthers or Arizona?

On the road even.

Well, we only can face AFC teams for now…we’ll only see the others in a Super Bowl. It doesn’t seem we have the offense to do it. I’d like to see the Chiefs try to make bigger downfield plays with Alex in the next two games. If the Chiefs are to win more than one playoff game, they’ll need to do that.

That said, give the Chiefs credit – this is their best squad in 20 years – the only good team they’ve had since Marty Ball.

Maybe they’ll get there doing it their way. Sure hope so.

Uh oh now we might win the division with Denver losing to the Steelers and us being one back. Steelers could lose to Bengals we would win the west if we beat lowly Browns and decent Raiders here. Good news for Clark Hunt a home game and more money but we’d have a tougher road to win a game…we’d likely face the Steelers in game one at home if not the Broncos…not as easy as going to Houston who would likely be 7-9 or 8-8…I’d rather win a playoff game than win the division..course I’d like to win a few playoff games.

  2. Kerouac says:

Yet another HOR-RENDOUS effort by the swiss… playing the injury-ravaged Ravens who were sans their starting QB (good as any the NFL) and starting RB, starting WR, starting OT, starting C, starting DE & starting LB (have we missed anyone? Probably), BALT nonetheless dominated vs the hapless swiss: total yardage, 1st downs, yards per play, gross offensive yards, net offensive yards, yards per rush, fewer sacks allowed & more sacks gotten vs kcindy, special teams & did it all with less total time possession. The only thing kept the hapless swiss in the game were BALT’s own unforced errors / turnovers – including a long td pass overthrown vs the great overhype ‘Toast’ Peters – who was again beaten & burnt all day long by the Ravens no-name WR’s.

The nascent fan will see x of ints and say ‘hey, the guy’s great’, unaware he has given up more tds & yardage than any swiss DB in 2015 – also an indication that he is being thrown at more than anyone else because, well… he majorly ‘Hoover vacuums’, to be nice. Kerouac hasn’t seen ‘Toast’ make a play all season long of his own accord, every fortunate turn for him due a ball being thrown directly to him, as the swiss no credit due their fraudulent turns – none.

    True final score: @RAVENS 28 ~ swiss 20

Playoff picture: DEN, NE and HOU or IND for the top three spots, PITT and NYJ look to be shoe-ins the other two wildcards… swiss season ends as every theirs in two more weeks, once again home for the holidays.

‘Wait till next year’ part 54 for the swiss – who as the royals their 61 Championship-less seasons since 1955 – have no legit Championship in KC their 53 years since ’63.

  4. CG says:

K some of what you say is true. The stats for sure. But you missed a big one. Chiefs are only team in NFL history to lose 5 in a row then win 8 in a row. As I wrote here their offense needs to step up much more to be a deep threat in playoffs. But they know their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe this is just who they are and they feel they can win this way. They have so far. Will it work against a New England or Steelers. I don’t think so especially on the road. So a Super Bowl is a quite a big reach, but play offs aren’t. I see the Raiders at seasons end being a tough one here. Chiefs could use that Jets loss at New England to wrap a wild card.

Nobody save Panthers have done it all this season. Every team has had major injury and poor games. The Panthers gave up a ton of points in the second half to the Giants, won with a field goal after leading by a boatload. They still won but their D has been not so great lately. New England lost two in a row. Bengals lose their QB and lose a couple. Green Bay has not been themselves with a few unexpected losses. So on and so on.

Hey the Chiefs outside Panthers are the leagues hottest team with 8 wins in a row. So you have to give them some credit K. So if they get into playoffs will you say hey that was quite a run?

Again they aren’t crazy good. They are good though. Again if offense improves and it could, they would be a tough out. Nobody is saying Super Bowl. But in 2014 nobody said world series for the Royals.

    • Kerouac says:

      “K”

      – yes CG, what is it now?

“some of what you say is true. The stats for sure. But you missed a big one. Chiefs are only team in NFL history to lose 5 in a row then win 8 in a row.”

      – nod Mr. Spock, “totally illogical, Mr. Glazer”, genuine as starting a season 9-0 (twice, they) an watered down, rules bastardized era modern NFL. Nowhere in the end as always, the swiss. That 8? Add 2 and you can’t even get a 10¢ cup of coffee today, only another ‘wait till next year’…

“As I wrote here their offense needs to step up much more to be a deep threat in playoffs. But they know their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe this is just who they are and they feel they can win this way. They have so far. Will it work against a New England or Steelers. I don’t think so especially on the road.”

      – these swiss couldn’t win at home today vs the 1964 Broncos who finished an legit 2-11-1 thence; switch the teams/era’s & those Broncos are 12-4 in 2015, put the swiss back in 1964 & they finish 1-13.

“So a Super Bowl is a quite a big reach, but play offs aren’t. I see the Raiders at seasons end being a tough one here. Chiefs could use that Jets loss at New England to wrap a wild card.”

      – I see dead swiss for the last 45+ years; as the royals, no legit Championships either club, each’s history…

“Nobody save Panthers have done it all this season.”

      – what is it they’ve done, accomplished? Lemme guess: they’re the greatest of all-time (like the fraudulent Patriots were a few seasons back, when they took their spotless, perfect & odor-free record to the Superbowl and were exposed for what they as the modern NFL be: FRAUDS…

“Every team has had major injury and poor games. The Panthers gave up a ton of points in the second half to the Giants, won with a field goal after leading by a boatload. They still won but their D has been not so great lately. New England lost two in a row. Bengals lose their QB and lose a couple. Green Bay has not been themselves with a few unexpected losses. So on and so on.”

      – you’re preaching to the choir: NFL 2015 = fraud – 32 losers, no waiting!

      “Hey”

      – straw!

“the Chiefs outside Panthers are the leagues hottest team with 8 wins in a row.”

      – second verse same as the 101st: the numbers are totally bogus & irrelevant; turn now to Charles William King, addendums courtesy Kerouac: “in an insane (football) world, a sane (poor) man (team) must appear insane (good).”

“So you have to give them some credit K. So if they get into playoffs will you say hey that was quite a run?”

      – take a guess…

      “Again they aren’t crazy good.”

      – just their vacuous fandumb who imagines they are…

“They are good though. Again if offense improves and it could, they would be a tough out.”

      – ‘if’, ‘improves’, ‘it could’, ‘they would’; you left out ‘but’ and ‘should’ (and ‘oh, the humanity!’) but the gist remains sufficient…

      “Nobody is saying Super Bowl.”

      – to your credit, you aren’t – others are/have… a silly lot. No matter what team not named swiss wins an equally bogus Superbowl, will be spurious too…

“But in 2014 nobody said world series for the Royals.”

      – see Kerouac’s last response, above; there were and always will be those…

      🙂

      • CG says:

K I think you just want to have fun pissing off Chiefs fans. The Royals were legit World Series team 4 times. 80,85,2014,2015 won two…you can’t argue that. Yes KC Chiefs were the leagues first real wild card in 69 but were a great team, won it all…since then nothing. Agreed. Everyone gives Oakland that first wild card season but KC really was just it was the AFL not NFL…anyways..nobody said super bowl this year…but I’d rather win 8 in a row mid to late season and go to playoffs then back in with 9 in a row early then suck.

K I think and so do the nonhaters, your writing is fantastic, your stats second to none, but its not fair to just hate on KC teams like this, its not. Yes we have been dealt a bad hand with both organizations til now with the Royals. You can’t argue or convince anyone they were fake. This year they were baseball’s best simple as that. THEY PROVED IT K.

Chiefs have to prove something, so far they haven’t done that. You see a lack of big excitement from the fans cause they don’t trust these guys yet. It’s there, but still in the closet. Due to past failures over and over again. You are right on that one.

K this team has a shot, they are balanced. Both sides of the ball are good and could be very good. It rests with Alex Smith and our linebackers and d backs to move up. The Chiefs are on the verge of really being good. Too bad our core guys are at the end of their careers, Johnson, now Berry finally playing well finally, Tamba Hali is outstanding but has maybe one year left…sad…hope they get it done this year for those guys but mostly for our fans. They deserve a nice playoff run past one game, maybe more.

Again we aren’t there yet, but this team with some more work and confidence could beat anyone. We need to step it up one level and its there if they go for it.

        • Kerouac says:

          “K”

          – yes, what is it now, CG?

“I think you just want to have fun pissing off Chiefs fans.”

          – collateral angst: nod ‘Twilight Zone’ ‘The 7th Is Made Up of Phantoms’, NFL be made up of frauds same (the taste that swiss gravy is indeed delicious though)…

“The Royals were legit World Series team 4 times. 80,85,2014,2015 won two…you can’t argue that.”

          – the long line wishes become my Manager forms to the right… close eyes, tap heels together thrice and think to yourselves ‘There’s no place like home’… one may wake up in Kansas, but not legitimate Champions anything.

“Yes KC Chiefs were the leagues first real wild card in 69 but were a great team, won it all…since then nothing. Agreed.”

          – disagree – ‘every’ team since 1969 football as baseball be frauds, result the skewed system. That year’s Chiefs survived result a wild card (as case today, didn’t belong post season, but extra chances began that season sport, giving mere also-rans each sport help so they could get in. THAT is not legitimacy. Result: every was specious.) Today, a copiously worse more fraudulent sports world exists.

Chiefs lost to the clearly superior Raiders twice already in 1969, were 1-7 vs OAK the previous 8 games. Those Raiders actually already had their bags packed for that Superbowl ‘before’ the game began… that they took KC lightly likely, that had they played 10 x Kerouac would bet on the Raiders all 10 despite my love for the Chiefs, a fact… no question whom the better team was. Raiders had just come off a 56-7 demolition the Oilers first game post season, an Oilers team that like the Chiefs did ‘not’ belong there. Those who embrace “but that day” dream delude themselves: KC benefited variously Lamonica’s was injury, blown official’s call & George Blanda missing all 3 of his field goals attempts (see Stenerud, Jan, 1971 vs MIA for analogy.)

As the Dolphins beat the Chiefs in ’71, to this day claims ‘the Chiefs were better’ and ‘it was our best team ever’ prevail; same difference as OAK vs KC ’69. Chiefs were better than the Dolphins in 1971… so were the Raiders better than the Chiefs or anyone else in football ’69.

Kerouac is not impressed by the ’empty’ numbers of this ‘hollow’ age of sports… He will never be moved. Upshot: as the ’69 Chiefs, ’15 swiss do not belong, only difference being great teams were in existence 1969; today is not a single-team could compete with those Raiders, football’s best according even Hank Stram. Those Chiefs, Vikings, Colts, Jets, Rams and Cowboys of 1969 would dominate any of today’s teams… it wouldn’t even be close.

THIS the difference those who see but result ‘X of wins’ or a ‘Championship’ & claim it it as legit/call it macaroni, compared the true greatness of ‘creme de la creme’ has not existed sports since the nod buck$ began 1969.

“Everyone gives Oakland that first wild card season but KC really was just it was the AFL not NFL…anyways.. nobody said super bowl this year”

          – swiss s(Hoover vacuum)k either way: rest of the best NFL be no more than ‘best the worst’, all frauds by any measure compared yesteryear’s legit’s.

          – yes, I’m still here CG, go ahead…

“Yes we have been dealt a bad hand with both organizations til now with the Royals. You can’t argue or convince anyone they were fake.”

          – no need to: that others KCC cannot refrain engaging Kerouac proof He has already convinced them…

“This year they were baseball’s best simple as that. THEY PROVED IT K.”

          – ‘best simple’ resonates kc fandumb: simple terms their understanding of merit, best as in ‘of worst’. Reason why MLB vacated the results OF 2015, decided retain ‘THE’ ‘WORLD CHAMPION SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS’ the Trophy, which they will continue to own 2016 for their 3rd consecutive World Championship. SF GIANTS are already the pick of odds-makers: 6-1.

“Chiefs have to prove something, so far they haven’t done that. You see a lack of big excitement from the fans cause they don’t trust these guys yet. It’s there, but still in the closet. Due to past failures over and over again. You are right on that one.”

  5. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Fun game to watch, CG! Sans the Hail Mary at the end of the 1st half (very infuriating!), this was the total beat down that the Chiefs should have delivered to the Ravens. Time of possession and SUPERIOR coaching overwhelmed the hapless Ravens.

Stats about total yards, etc is why those thing don’t mean a doodly-damn. When you have a 70+ yard fumble recovery for a TD and a 90 yard INT for a TD, total offensive yardage gets skewed. Throw in a ridiculous fake punt play call where the Chiefs recovered the ball on the 24 yard line before hitting J-Mac 3 plays later for a TD and you can see how total yardage means ZERO, ZIP, NADA! 21 points on the board and total offensive yardage for those 21 points? 24 yards.

8 straight wins is nice. Really nice. An NFL record after losing 5 straight.

I’ll say it again. They are good, not great. A.) They have to get to the playoffs first. B.) They will have to win on the road. C.) No Super Bowl this year.

    Go Chiefs!!

    P.S. Good article, CG.

  6. Shawnster says:

I agree Craig, I would rather play as the fifth seed on the road against the Texans. Sure would be nice to get that 21 year playoff-win monkey off our back. That would be the easiest way to do it. We all know that they are not going to the Super Bowl, but a playoff win this year makes this season a success. How could it not? Only the very disillusioned among us (he who shall no longer be named) could say otherwise. If Reid and Dorsey improve the offense this off-season (two WR’s, 2 linemen) then we can entertain Super Bowl talk.

  7. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

The Steelers tore the vaunted Denver defense a new one. Antonio Brown sent Chris Harris to the burn unit, and he may require skin grafts. Roethlisberger surgically disemboweled the Broncos. Can you imagine if the Steelers had LaVeon Bell healthy?

  8. Furioso says:

Are ya’ll seeing a different picture than I am? I don’t see why the Chiefs can’t make the Superbowl.
    Here’s the scenario:
    1. Chiefs win their last two home games and Denver loses to Cincy.
    2. Chiefs win their division and the #3 playoff seed.
    3. Playoff game 1: Chiefs host either Broncos or Steelers or possibly Jets. Well, the chiefs have beat both the Steelers and Broncos already this year!
    4. Playoff game 2: Chiefs travel to Cincy. We can win this game esp. since Cincy’s starting QB is OUT for now and even if he comes back he’s like Marty Shottenheimer as far as winning playoff games are concerned.
    5. Playoff game 3: Chiefs prob travel to NE UNLESS the Pats get upset then the Chiefs would HOST the AFC Championship Game!
6 Playoff game 4: Superbowl vs. prob Carolina or Seattle or Ariz. Tough matchups for sure but we’ve got great defense that scores points! We also have superior coaching, several very good players(West, Maclin, Kelce) with a QB that makes NO mistakes.

I’d rather the Chiefs get the #3 seed vs. #5 or #6. Who cares if we go this far and only win one measley Wildcard playoff game, it still stings the next week when we lose. Let’s HOST a Wildcard game, win it, and then go on winning. There’s only one way to keep from being depressed at the end of the season and that’s by winning the Superbowl. Let the other 31 teams and their fans be depressed!

    • Hot Carl says:

“I don’t see why the Chiefs can’t make the Superbowl.”

Uh, then you’re not watching. Our offense is mediocre at best. I’d love to watch these guys go deep in the playoffs and even get to a Super Bowl but there’s no way with this pop-gun offense. One playoff win will make this a nice season.

      • Furioso says:

” Our offense is mediocre at best.”

Hot Carl did you know we’re winning by the biggest scoring margin (17.5 pts) of any other team in the NFL? Also, during our 8 game winning streak we’ve averaged 30 points a game.

Yes, our defense scores a lot of points but we have a potent offense with a consistent Alex Smith, a two pronged (West, Ware) running attack, two high powered WR’s(Maclin, Kelce). We’re just hard to defend and we don’t allow many points. This is a recipe for a Superbowl caliber team.

        • CG says:

          • Furioso says:

Thanks, I’ve been a Chiefs fan since 1975 and this is the best team we’ve had imo. I’m usually worried because usually the Chiefs have glaring weaknesses but I just don’t see any this year.

            Coaching – A
            QB – B
            RB’s – A
            WR’s – B or C
            TE – A
            O-Line – A
            Defense – A
Special Teams – Can somebody chime in on this?

Once again, am I the ONLY ONE seeing this?

The Chiefs beat the Steelers when they had Landry friggin Jones at quarterback, ok? Put Roethlisberger in there and he’ll shred the Chiefs. Did you not see what they did to Denver’s vaunted defense?

      • Furioso says:

Guy you’re right the Steelers in the playoffs will be tough but keep in mind Big Ben this season has beat every bad team BUT he has lost to every good team. Yes, the Steelers have beat Cincy and Denver the last two weeks but both teams were on their 2nd string QB.

Steelers have lost to the Pats, Bal(?!), Sea, KC, Cincy(1).

These aren’t the old Chiefs we’re used to.

  9. CG says:

Well no you aren’t. I agree with some not all. O LINE AN A UH no it was a D now a B- but much better, Eric Fisher has really improved….WR are due to Maclin a B+ he is an A but he has no real partner, Conley could have been they didn’t give him a go… Kelce is a strong B he isn’t yet a gamer, means can win you a big game like Gronk…too many mistakes, often poor blocking and not where he is suppose to be. Fumbles. Defense not an A maybe a B+ we get burned on long throws give up too many 3rd downs to lsts like San Diego getting 3 firsts on 4th downs. Peters is good, maybe D rook of the year but he too gets burned too much, most of his INT’s are right to him, still good, very good, but still needs to come up a notch. Special teams up and down, punter an A, place kicker a B- has missed second most in the league…still decent kicker…kick returns decent not great…Jr. is off and on…too many penalties..Coaching an A, hmmmm…we’ll see. Offense is still not where it needs to be,but it could get there with some more confidence and throws from Alex…he is the key to this team moving forward and now…our other MVP is Jeremy Maclin best wide out since Otis Taylor…on D maybe the great play finally of DJ…with Berry an Hali also playing their best…so overall I give the Chiefs a B+.
