Glazer: Fab Fall Football Follies

keep-calm-and-watch-chiefs-lose--3Well, are we over the Chiefs yet?

Not quite yet, right? Well, they have 14 more games, but hey folks, with that offensive line being a different group of guys nearly every week, they’re going nowhere.

I feel like coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey have had three years to fix it. They haven’t. So in my opinion, that’s not a good job.

Thus the Chiefs will not contend for much as usual.

They have other issues as well. That Thursday night game was an ugly loss. Next Monday Night at Green Bay – I don’t think so.

College area teams have no heros this season. Missouri has a solid defense but lack offensive weapons. They will go to a bowl game but I see this as a lesser year than the first two in the SEC. K State will also go bowling but not compete for a title in the Big Twelve and Kansas. Need I say anything. Outside of Ohio State the rest look like we won’t know for a couple more weeks. Alabama has a big game with Ole Miss ant that will tell us if they are big time or not this year.

WITH THE CHIEFS loss we are probably starting out behind. 3-5 overall lets get rolling.

  2. Kerouac says:

“I feel like coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey have had three years to fix it. They haven’t. So in my opinion, that’s not a good job.”

    – agreed, CG… Reid was a decade and a half failure in PHIL, and has done nothing but the same – fail – in Kansas City. Naturally, the Chiefs just ‘had’ to have him whence he became available. Now 3 seasons in, his latest incarnation currently sits 3rd place the AFC West, 2015. Is he better than his predecessors? The spacious (as in empty save for Stram’s SB 4) trophy case Arrowhead echoes in dissent, the dozen Head Coaches including he who have tried & failed the 45 seasons since Stram succeeded, affirming.

Andy-apologists cry “Yeah but, yeah but, Reid led PHIL to post season, 9 times in 14 seasons”… Kerouac reminds, “and won o Championships.”

“Yeah but, this year will be different!” Right… just like it was (going to be) different vs DEN Monday Night; second, third (and 46th) verse(s), same as the first.

Now in his 17th season, as in ofer 17, his face among those pictured next Einstein’s “doing the same thing over & over again and expecting different results” description ‘insanity’. George Allen, an far better coach than Reid, gave up the ghost after 12 seasons of no Championships, ditto former MIN HC Bud Grant who departed ofer 18 same. KC, Marty left aft 10 seasons same, and 21 seasons total never ended with a Lombardi in hand.

Reid is closing in on 20 years of no Championships, close but no cigar, ad nauseam. He will have been at it 19 years when his contract (is set to) expire after the 2017 season ends, so the likelihood is, we’re stuck with him till then.

Reid has stabilized the coaching carousel aft a disastrous previous 4 seasons Haley and Crennel, but 3 years in, the Chiefs are no closer being a Champion than they were any the previous 45 seasons since January 11, 1970 faded to black, and the Monday Night game vs DEN proves yet again the Swiss Chiefs are always up for a new way to fail, to lose another big game & embarrass themselves nationally… ‘we were the better team’, ‘we gave it away’ and ‘(insert all of the other excuses’ Chiefs fandumb plead annually)’, equating absolutely nothing in the way substance.

The Chiefs have an odd history their Head Coaching hires… a lot of time given in some cases, next to none others. Ownership concerns(spelled $), personality aspects etc. too making for strange bedfellows.

Hank Stram was fired after 3 seasons failure go to/win an playoff game, Wiggin 2 1/2 years same (his interim replacement 1/2 a season Bettis never had a chance), Levy in his 5 seasons (last one strike-shortened) did nothing, Mackovic got KC to post season in his 4th season and – surprise – was promptly fired for a political hire – enter Gansz – exit Gansz after 2 years of naught.

Schottenheimer got KC to post season 7 times in 10 years before departing (his own accord or helped out the door?) Next came Gunther… aft 2 years no post season, no encore a third. Vermeil arrives, stays half a decade, but makes post season only once, and not at all his final two seasons. He retires (or leaves in lieu a helping hand out the door, depending source.)

Enters replacement Edwards – first Chiefs Head Coach franchise history to reach the post season in his very first year, despite being left an aging relic of a team. Reward? Edwards is fired a season aft he began a long overdue rebuilding process. The booby prize: Chiefs new GM Pioli (bye to Carl) hires Todd Haley, then fires him less than 3 seasons in, and 1 post season appearance. Romeo Romeo, where for art thou Chiefs, Romero? Still spinning their wheels… after 1+ seasons, fired, no post seasons in tow.

Hilariously, that ‘rebuilding’ process Edwards began has continued unabated to today, through 3 more Head Coaches & 7 more years, bringing us up to date mediocre deux, Reid and Dorsey.

Forget ‘the Patriot Way’, ‘Steelers Way’, ‘PHIL Handy Andy Way’, ‘Green Bay Dorsey Way’ or any other way… here in Kansas City, we spell relief (if not football success) R-e-c-y-c-l-e-d H-e-a-d C-o-a-c-h-e-s (and QB’s too, but that’s for another blog entry) – that’s ‘the Kaycee Way!’ Don’t worry, just be happy: ‘this is our year, part 2015, verse 46!’

    • CG says:

Wow that was a mouthfull K. You are a genius when it comes to breaking down this failed organization. However they are not failures when it comes to value. In time the Chiefs will be worth BILLIONS. When the NFL goes public New York Stock Exchange in a few years and everyone in KC owns a part of a team they have control over. Even then no Super Bowls since 70.

Reid’s a solid coach. As was Marty. Winning a title does take some luck. Marty had none, he was a a gifted coach as was Reid.

Winning is a culture. New England has it in loads. Tom and Bill don’t know how to accept losing, so they win. We accept losing so we lose.

      • Harley says:

wrong again boy glaze….read the SI article…at NE they don’t
        lose…they cheat….they accept cheating….and cheatinghas
been a culture in ne…so much so that the commissioner
helped them hide the thousands of illegal tapes of
other teams work out tapes they had stackedin their
offices…plus screwing with the opponents mic system from
the bench to qb. cheating and lying…that’s how they
got those wins…and how we’ll keep them out of the
hall of fame…read it big mouth!
        Lying…cheating….that’s the NE way….stealing papers…
but for you that’s just fine…its your way of living.
Nice example again of glaze getting shot down for more
        bull sh(t…..please stfu….

      • Kerouac says:

Can’t disagree, CG… the NYSE scenario you reference become reality, the Chiefs become like the Packers, in one sense, if not another: community owned if not owners Championships; aye, there’s the, rub.

Yes, winning can entail a bit of ‘luck’ & success can be/is cyclical. Schottenheimer won regular season, “luck the residue of design” statement his suggesting he believed controlled own destiny. As such, must’ve been a poor designer moreso unlucky post season, where he was horrible. Reid’s career is not dissimilar, other than losing a Superbowl he as Schottenheimer a ‘solid’ coach who does not rank among the very best. Unless you consider such ‘almost got er done’ types their ilk among the best, which Kerouac does not. Maybe much as HC, the problem & answer lays elsewhere.

Chiefs have been consistently short greatness at QB years now, several QB’s, designs/designers (Head Coaches) numbering 46 years since their own HOF QB Dawson departed 40 years ago. Chiefs got brief use a relic Montana already past his expiration date, BUF proving ’93 & MIA ’94. Chiefs had the solid Gannon, Green, DeBerg & Krieg, lessers Bono, Grbac & today’s average Joe, Alex Smith. Different today than yester due parity, team’s need a great QB more than ever… solid only getting you so far. Manning vs Smith Monday Night affirms even at his worst age / injury, the better QB led his team to victory. Odds are, KC will never win a Championship with any Tom, Dick or Harry at QB.

The problem as Hank Stram wrote in his book – “you can’t just order up world class athletes as if they were a sandwich.” Even half a century worth of drafts is not panacea, as case the Chiefs, if you decide only draft two QB’s #1 during the entire time, and pass on Marino & Kelly in lieu Blackledge, and pass on Montana in lieu Fuller; different eras, different GM’s, same ol’ Chiefs. ’15, yet another recycled QB, yet another former 49er, Smith, add to the collection DeBerg, Montana, Bono & Grbac.)

Back to Head Coaches, others who were solid yet still not upper echelon terms ultimate success: Bud Grant, Dan Reeves & Marv Levy. Can be no distinction any coaches, if all are but victims of bad luck or bad design… once, twice, ad nauseam. Unlike a Reid (who had McNabb) & Schottenheimer (who had Kosar & an old Joe/host solid not great others), Grant had Tarkenton, Reeves had Elway & Levy had Kelly. All latter’s failed win a Superbowl too, perhaps affirmation that trio Coaches being an notch below ‘the greatest’, despite having great QB’s.

More than luck or design, great QB’s – HOF caliber – more often than not the difference, Superbowl’s past affirming, most cases. Shy the Chiefs rectifying this ongoing lack theirs, they will not be following a leader to the promised land so much as just being out for a walk, each and every season, play it again Sam, Andy, etc.

Grading coaches, Championships the measure, Vince Lombardi remains best ever, 5 in 9 seasons GB/lost a 6th by but 3 points; that he turned 14-consecutive years non-winning teams WASH into a winner his very first year there, affirming (WASH, his QB was HOFr Sonny Jurgensen.) No one else including the joke/NE, Belichick et al, worthy be in the discussion (4 Championships in 15 years NE/21 years overall with but 4 compared Lombardi’s 5 in just 10 seasons total career, affirming.)

        🙂

    • HARLEY says:

      idiot…
the patriots way: lie/steal/cheat/film against league rules./destroy
      evidence/cheat/cheat/cheat/buy off the commissioner…
wait for new SI article….if that’s the patriot way…it’s not gonna
get those boys in the hall of fame…no matter how many
      rings they get.

  3. Kerouac says:

Part of my post cut off (‘War & Peace’ retaining its advantage length), restate it in brief:

Green Bay since Starr departed (like Dawson) in the 70’s, has managed to employ young, HOF QB’s their futures ahead of them, Favre and now Rodgers. And of course, both won Superbowl’s. Compare said to the Chiefs and- on second thought don’t, will just get more depressed, Chiefs fandom.

  4. CG says:

HEY guys what a horrible start to the season on picking games. Wow. This season will be brutal…PARODY. I even looked at expert picks before I made mine and we were all in agreement like CBSEXPERT PICKS AGAINST THE SPREAD…ALL NINE PICKED MIAMI AND ST. AS SURE WINS…really…at this point only the Packers and New England look elite…the Packers just started…even they have injury issues like Jordy Nelson and now Dallas who looks good lost Romo…I had them today cause of the huge spread and teasing it up to 12 1/2 nice…but man these games are almost all close and nobody is solid. So its gonna be hard…the old bet against bad teams..I did Oakland, Jacksonville,Cleveland all WON…wow. Even the Pats had issues in the end but the Bills are good. With Chargers losing and Manning fading maybe Chiefs get back in soon, who knows…all NFL team have issues today…more than ever.

I must say the days of betting big on games may be history…I had no biggies last year save SUPER BOWL and I even lowered that one and was lucky to win on the last play with the Pats…lucky…my main bet in Vegas was Colts over Chiefs for ten years won them all and a couple Denver over Chiefs as well…I lost a couple close ones with the Pats over the last few years..big ones…so it ain’t easy… best bet is to small and just have fun…good teams will be more clear soon…same with college…boy a couple years back I killed in Vegas with OU,Stanford, Bama, Oregon now tough…

      “Parity”. You’re welcome.

      • KCMonarch says:

This guy is literally in the business of comedy yet doesn’t know “parity” from “parody.”

Maybe his sports “writing” is a clever parody…making fun of sports writers’ intelligence levels?

      CAN’T LOSE!~

  6. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

For the record, Mizzou may have won their last game of the year. They might be able to beat Vandy, in a close game. Their offensive line is hot garbage. They have no depth at runningback. Maty Mauk continues to make the same brain dead mistakes he’s made for three years running. (Hey Mauk, it’s ok to throw to your checkdown receiver. The answer when your primary receiver is covered is NOT scramble around like a waterhead and then sling it downfield as far as possible and hope someone catches it. Asshole!) And the WR corps is still learning how to block on screens and run good routes. All that being said, the defense is damn good, but they’ll be beat to death by week 4 in SEC play. Mizzou is looking at a 3-9 season.

    • HARLEY says:

MIZZOU LOST SOME REALLY GOOD PLAYERS…ON BOTH OFFENSE
AND DEFENSE….AND THE O LINE. RECEIVERS ARE THIN.
BUT DON’T COUNT THEM OUT YET…..MANY PEOPLE HAVE LOST
FORTUNES TRYING TO BEAT UP ON MIZZOU……..
BUT THEY’RE STILL UNDEFEATED AND IF THEY BEAT KENTUCKY
AND SC AT HOME…THEY GO BOWLING.
AND THAT MEANS BIG BIG MONEY FOR THE BLACK AND GOLD.
