Glazer: Are This Year’s Royals KC’s Best Team Ever?

mlb-oakland-athletics-kansas-city-royals2I can’t recall past Chiefs or Royals teams wrapping up their division by mid season…

This just waiting for the playoffs and trying to keep the best record for home field  advantage is a strange feeling, isn’t it?

I mean, is this Kansas City’s best pro team ever?

It may well be.

Now that doesn’t guarantee a World Series title. Anything can happen in the post season. However, this current Royals club seems to be as close to perfect as any great team Kansas City’s ever had in either football or baseball.

Even the George Brett Royals always seemed to be looking up to the New York Yankees through the 1970s and up until 1980. And the 1985 Royals that won it all battled all season long to win the division. Nobody at the time felt it was anywhere near KC’s best Royals club until they won it all over St. Louis in the World Series.

And now we have a team that is a regular season monster!

oyo021As the team matures it seems they can do no wrong.

Eric Hosmer and Lorenzo Cain are both top seven hitters. Our DH has over 80 RBI’s and likely will pass 100, as will Hosmer. Eric is finally becoming a super star player.

And even with all our pitching issues, I think we can all agree it’s a pretty tough starting lineup with Danny Duffy, Ace Ventura and now Cueto. The bullpen is one of baseball’s best ever. Our defense is the best in baseball. The Royals have the American League’s best record and are 14 games up on second place Twins.

KC is the prohibitive favorite to win it all and go to the World Series again.

Even without Alex Gordon  there’s no stopping them.

But hey, if you took Brett off the 70’s and 80′ teams could they have even won their division? If you took out Hosmer or Cain out, I think this team would still walk away with the division.

Marty Schottenheimer had some great Chiefs teams in the 90’s, but did we all feel during those seasons – or at the end – that nobody could beat us?

Is this Royals team our best pro team ever?

Maybe, just maybe.

It sure feels that way!

Let me answer your question, CG. No. They are not.

Win 99 or 100 games in the regular season AND win the World Series? Then the answer is yes. But at this point, they haven’t won anything.

    Just enjoy the ride.

long way to go glaze….got new York/Toronto/st. Louis/Houston…some
    really good teams…
if they win it all then we can discuss whether they were better than 85 or
    other royals teams.

  3. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

The Royals will be lucky to win the AL the way NY and Toronto are playing. The Royals are good team, however.

“I think we can all agree it’s a pretty tough starting lineup with Danny Duffy, Ace Ventura and now Cueto.”

Why would you even mention Ventura in this sentence? If it wasn’t for Vargas’ injury he’d most likely be pitching in Omaha. He is the very definition of a guy with a million dollar arm and a ten cent head. Volquez is the pitcher you should have cited.

You beat me to it, Hot Carl. “Ace” is the worst as far as immaturity. Cueto, Salvy and others have their hands full trying to mentor that baby.

“Are This Year’s Royals KC’s Best Team Ever?”

    – was 2014’s KCinderella better than the ’85 flukes Royally saved a blind ump? Could the 2015 version become the biggest disappointment in Kansas City sporting history? Were the ’71 Chiefs better the ’69/’66 versions? These the questions make the minds of men itch.

40+ games left to play, Royals current 14.5 lead may look good but doesn’t guarantee anything (see the 1964 Phillies, who blew a 10 game lead with 12 to play, missed post season entirety. The 1906 Cubs won 116 games and lost only 36 – best record in MLB history to date… they lost that year’s World Series; ditto 2001 Mariners 116 wins – no ‘World Series’ cigar too.

The ’66 Chiefs gained sole possession 1st place AFL West midway point, never headed again; the finest team KC & the AFL had ever produced ran head-on into the Packers, Superbowl 1. Chiefs were bigger, stronger, faster, younger – but not as good – the welt their hides still lingers half a century on.

’69 Chiefs finished second, only a special one-year wild card format allowed them into post season at all. Raiders having beaten KC 7 times in the previous 8, was off to OAK for another try. Serendipity and an indictment forever prevails: an second place team is the only pro football Champion KC history can claim.

As for the ‘best’ Chiefs team ever (according some), it was beaten Christmas Day ’71 by the Dolphins (who went undefeated themselves in ’72, and thus are referred ‘best ever’ by some.) ‘Best’ being forever subjective, Kerouac will take the ’69 Chiefs over any the Royals teams, ever.

    🙂

I’m maybe the last person that should be quoting the Bible but the phrase “the race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong” comes to mind.

If you are one from the camp that says a team has to win the championship in that sport in that year to be considered the best, I respect that but I don’t subscribe to that personally. There are countless examples in all sports of teams that were generally recognized to be the best on paper, however in a single game or short series, were not victorious. Like they say, they don’t play them on paper. With regards to the Royals, personally I think the 1977 version was the best but since they didn’t win it all that year, they are relegated down. The best in 1985??? Thank you Don Denkinger.

I think CG makes a good point but if you think they have to win it all to be considered the best, I get that also.

  7. h arley says:

many baseball experts say the 77 royalswere one of the best ever…
not the best..but one of the best….

  8. bob says:

They aren’t even the best baseball team in Missouri right now. The Cards have about .40 points on them.

hearne took a job selling autos.
Is kcc about to go under?
wish him luck in his new position.
    Hearne…thanks for the memories.
