Hearne: 96.5 The Buzz & 610 Sports Rock July 2015 Radio Ratings

Shock and awe it was not, still there were some surprises in the July 2015 radio ratings…

Not the least which was another strong showing by 96.5 The Buzz. The  alternative rocker slotted into second place in listeners 12 and older with a strong 6.1 share, tying it with fellow Entercom powerhouse 610 Sports.

That’s right, powerhouse.

Because the radio home of the Kansas City Royals has gone from sleepyhead to butt kicker – from no big deal to very big deal – from WHB punching bag to WH-Who?

It’s gonna be a long, hot summer and frostbitten fall for Kevin Kietzman, Soren Petro and the gang at the station formerly known as the “World’s Happiest Broadcasters” as 610 Sports continues its newfound ratings dominance courtesy of the Kansas City Royals.

That despite that 610 slipped from a 7.4 share in May and a 6.6 share in June to a still formidable 6.1 in July.

But back to The Buzz…

After untold years of playing third fiddle to sibling rock station 98.9 The Rock,
Lazlo
and company now enjoy a full five place advantage over its longtime rock rival. That after The Rock slid into 7th place with a 4.8 share.

One wild card: Despite The Buzz’s higher ratings, The Rock’s cume – the number of weekly listeners who spend five minutes or longer listening to the station –  held a more than 100,000 listener lead over The Buzz.

Confusing?

Hey, that’s how radio ratings are supposed to be. How else could Nielsen con all those stations into choking out tens of millions of dollars if there wasn’t a way for pretty much anybody to put a sunny spin on their ratings numbers.

“The Buzz is tied for second, but what’s interesting is they were only 14th in cume,” says a source.  “What that means is they have a very, very, very loyal audience. So there are fewer people listening to The Buzz but when they do listen, they listen for a long time.”

Another reason for The Buzz passing the Johnny Dare station: a nationwide shift away from what is called active rock

Said it before but 610 has done a terrific job of not only capitalizing on the Royals and their success but also embracing the enthusiasm and fun that’s come with it. Meanwhile at 810, grumpy old men. An example is last night after and during Johnny Cueto’s electric 4 hit complete game shutout in his home debut, all Soren Petro wanted to tweet and talk about was whether Cueto should have been allowed to pitch the 9th inning. C’mon man, put your sabermetric numbers aside every once in awhile and enjoy the ride

Glad to know I’m not the only one who thinks that. Its like 810 doesn’t understand the concept of “Bread and Circus” emphasis on the circus. I don’t need more stress, problems, or pessimissm in my life. If I needed that on my drive home, I’d turn around and return to work. The Royals aren’t the Iran Nuclear Deal. It’s baseball, we are winning, we have swag and charisma, and its a nice relief from the stresses of the world. But 810 just seems angry.

I haven’t seen anything written about the Union broadcasting folks running ESPN radio and NBC sports radio programming on 99.3 FM. From the little I’ve listened to, it seems to be a simulcast of the 1510 feed in daylight hours, but the FM signal is allowed to continue after sundown.

have listend to 610 lately and they are fun to listen to.
not so overly analytical and its lighter.
We all know the royals are great….we know 610 has som young guys
who seem to have fun with the games and they’re more tied to change
in techonology than other stations using twitter/eetc….
    good job 610

Good. Whatever passes for hard rock on the radio these days is awful. There are awesome hard rock bands that the Rock completely ignores.

  5. CG says:

The Dare Morning Show is still number one. Johnny is more a talk show host than anything else. He has the best guests in KC. His national presence gets him actors, comics and tv stars who are pushing their new movies, tv shows or appearances. No other station is close in star power. The stars like Dare and he is considered a strong interview artist soon to be in the rock n’ roll hall of fame, which he has earned. Enough on that one. Dare is our only version of Howard Stern.

dare couldn’t makeit in another market. no competiion…and he’s
      really not that funny.
yes he gets the listeners but also is a big fish in a small pond.
and he’s slowy getting worn out with his lifted material.

That pic of Lazlo looks like he should be on some sort of stranger danger list….
