Hearne: American Royal Con Game Advances

The Pitch ran this pic last fall to illustrate how few people actually attend the American Royal

The Pitch ran this pic last fall to illustrate how few people actually attend the American Royal

Cross your fingers…

If Kansas City gets lucky – and I mean really lucky – the laughably ridiculous threat by the American Royal to move out of Kemper Arena and the stockyards will come to pass.

They’ll convince some other part of town or city into building a pint sized place to put on the Royal’s dying horse and livestock shows before the bite sized crowds that still subscribe to that dated form of entertainment and move on down the road elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter where the American Royal goes, just that it does indeed go.

Otherwise, the way the all too malleable Kansas City Council works, it’s only a matter of time until the small handful of local business big shots con them into making an incredibly bad deal for local taxpayers to keep the American Royal in the stockyards.

Trust me on that one.

Because short of a miracle, all this hocus locus about threatening to move the American Royal out of good, old KCMO is a total crock.

Nobody with half a clue actually thinks catering to a ridiculously small cadre of horse and livestock lovers is worth investing tens of millions of dollars – taxpayer dollars.

Once upon a time it was.

When I was a child the American Royal mattered – it was a relatively big deal.

However those days are long gone.

The American Royal ain’t NASCAR, nor are they Sporting KC.

People are not going to start attending those type of events just because they build something smaller and nicer.

Look at what happened at the Woodlands.

And hey, if there’s a town that may view the American Royal in a more favorable light, more power to ’em. Take that baby and run with it – don’t look back – Kansas City will be in your corner rooting for your success.

In fact, the smarter money might be for Kansas City to subsidize the American Royal’s departure. Offer say, maybe $10 million to any city that will offer to build the Royal a new home and host its events going forward.

If the Future Farmers owned the American Royal they might still be here

If the Future Farmers owned the American Royal they might still be here

Maybe the Future Farmers of America might be interested.

Ever since former KC mayor Emanuel Cleaver let the FFA get away the Royal has never been the same. It’s been in a steep downhill slide. Take a gander at the photo the Pitch ran last fall of some hoo-ha horse event at the American Royal that had fewer people in attendance than Harley and I combined have IQ points.

All this horse hockey about the American Royal going somewhere else is just an idle threat.

And how dumb can Kansas City Star reporter Lynn Horsley be to “report” that members of the Kansas City Council hope to attract new offers for the reuse of Kemper Arena? The answer is, she’s not dumb at all, but by framing stories about the Royal leaving and burying all the skepticism deep in the jump, she’s doing readers a disservice.

Fetch brother Steve had a plan for Kemper Arena... until the American Royal's lawyers put him in their sights

Fetch brother Steve had a plan…that is until the American Royal’s lawyers put him in their sights

Because it’s obvious that since the American Royal succeeded in using its legal swat team against the Foutch Brothers – who were offering an alternative plan – and causing them to drop their proposal, nobody in their right mind is going to offer up another one.

And sadly, the Foutch Brothers plan for Kemper Arena had legs and public support.

So why would the city council expect someone else to invest their time and money, now that the American Royal has made it clear that it will employ its bully tactics on a competing plan?

So yeah, sure, the American Royal is gonna shop around – more power to ’em.

But don’t believe for a minute that its plan is anything other than to circle back around, try and catch the council off guard (especially its departing members who would probably benefit from making some friends in high places right before they go) and get them to authorize a bogus $50 to $80 million debacle in the stockyards.

These rich bullies are used to getting their way and they’ll probably succeed again.

Too bad though, because if something this dumb was ever put up for a vote it wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades. And imagine what the Star’s news coverage for this would be if Clay Chastain was the one behind it.

Wait, I just thought of a graceful out for the city council.

Would Clay Chastain have gotten kid glove treatment if this were HIS idea?

Would Clay Chastain have gotten kid glove treatment if this were HIS idea?

Put it on the ballot and let the voters decide.

Can you imagine how big of a landslide that would be?

As for the Star coverage of the American Royal debate, how about instead of writing bogus headlines and stories about the Royal threatening to move, they stop burying the fact that nobody else is really much interested in rescuing a dying event. Stop burying the skepticism. Stop placing it  at the butt end of long stories and make it abundantly clear that moving the Royal elsewhere is a highly unlikely outcome.

Report that nobody on the record thinks that’s likely to happen.

And report that as long as the American Royal holds the threat of using its lawyers to snuff out competing plans the chances of getting a legitimate proposal for reusing Kemper Arena is highly unlikely.

How hard is that to do?

Seriously.

Stop burying the lede, how dumb do they think readers are?

Sorry hearne….would be willing to show you my wonderlic scores but
    you’d be embarrassed.
Plus I went to a real high school…not pemsy daisy where everyone got
passed cause daddy paid a lot of money to go there.
Worked thru high school…worked thru college….did great in the
j school at mizzou…in fact I will be speaking to the department
in april. I’m sure Wilson will want to attend and see how a real
speaker and expert works an audience.
First off…you compare the woodlands to American royal. Faceplant #506.
If you need further info on why they are in no way corrected I will go
into details but it had more to do with egos than anything else.
I know the inside story and it had nothing to do with the actual reasons
you and the starmade it out to be.
If done properly with the right people…the American royal could comeback.
But it takes a commitment and a new strategy to make it happen. It used
to coincide with concerts/events/etc….but we lost all that to other cities
when the city changed its marketing program.
You could hold it in sprint…as if they don’t have any empty dates….
and devise a complete country music program around it. Remember..kc
ranks as one of the top country markets in the nation. Focus on one
end of the market…but the money is there with large national organization
willing to make it happen…hey maybe even coincide it with the commodity
events that knsas city missesevery year with thousands of farmers going to
other towns…it can be done …with theright type of leadershio.
I saw the bullriding events at sprint were coming….coordinate with them…
you’re an old time thinker with no new ideas.
Everything you say is NO NO NO….or lets tear it down…lets let it
    go.
Even worse is thinking the ffa would come back. They could but doubtful
because our downtown is not built to handle kids wanting video games.
Sure lets put it on the ballot. Now we’r going to callyou Clay Chastain jr.
And you have no economic insight into this.
If kc is giving away money….more money to cordish…why not use existing
facilities and focus on a single area. You say nothing about this at all.
Of course you’re an asphalt cowboy. You don’t get it.
I was involved in American royal from age 10…loved it….
so lets get away from trying to tie the star into this mass conspiracy to
bring back kemper…….go get the financial pictures….get the numbers…
which I don’t think you even have looked at to make your decision.
And of course you have to tie the evil star into every story…which makes
us believe you have a long standing feud with them for what they did to you.
I will be posting more facts to prove that you’re wrongagain on this issue.
    thanks…
    your friend
    Harley

Man, you love putting words in my mouth, don’t you?

Let’s see, I graduated from high school in Tucson, for one.

And I don’t recall ever saying to tear down Kemper.

Oh, and who do you think that it was that pointed out that the AR BBQ was getting smoked by Memphis because of its HUGE concert tie-ins?

George Gustello tried to break the American Royal out of just having one or two big name country concerts and brought in some alt rock and blues acts – albeit it on a far smaller scale – but George ain’t around anymore and now about all they have are a couple cover and local bands.

Aside from all that, I’m not sure what you’re actually bringing to the table, other than you have blind faith in the past and that I’m completely clueless.

    • Lois Lerner says:

“…in fact I will be speaking to the department
in april. I’m sure Wilson will want to attend and see how a real
speaker and expert works an audience.”

      Ya mean like this?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww

I think Paul would like to go! Anyone who “…did great in the j school at mizzou” is sure to be a big draw.

If I close my eyes and imagine, I can hear the hypnotic, super silky delivery in combination with the verve and elan all great gifted orators posess, lifted right out of kccondfidential’s comment section, into a rhetorical Churchillian oration that would, I am sure, leave us all just speechless.

William Jennings Bryan, eat your heart out!!!

      • Lois Lerner says:

I am still going to jail Harley.

      • hahhararley says:

Lois dear…..glad to see you’re a reader of kcc. However I’m sure you’ve seen many of the stupid/lies and misstatements
made by these old guys …many of whom don’t nor have
        ever really looked at history.
Almost every administration has used the IRS as their
personal tool to harass opponenets. The foolish idiots
who believe that any president would do such a thing
are merely too lazy to maybe GOOGLE and see what
alsmost every administration has done to the irs.
Like many others the irs is responsible for collecting
the taxes due…but they’ve been part of the 2 trillion
dollars in untaxed profits that the large corporations
(and there are thousands) who bought the politicians
so they could quietly send their profits offshore and
to other places to avoid paying taxes. It’s against the
        law/
But anyone with any brains could easily find info of how
going back 10 adminstratons…(many including republicans
used the irs as their personal way to harass political
        opponents…even George W. Bush…his father…Richard Nixon…
and going further back used this tactic. If the writers who
scare you would maybe get off their lazy boys…start doing
a little research…they’d find this out.
Problem is the line crossed by non profits moving into
political activism….which is legally wrong. But guys who
sell boxes and construction work haven’t a clue because
they’re either doing the “wrong” things (that’s another story
to come out) or they’re just plain stupid.
        Lois…the republicans can’t even get a bill passed..they
can’t get a single vote on any issue or huge matter.
They are so screwed up….many pundits say they will
go the way of the whig party sooner than we think.
They’ve investigated this so called scandal an found
        even progressive groups were investigated.
        Problem is its politics.
the questions for these idiots is with all thevpartisan
usage of the irs by both parties…has anyone gone to jail
for this political action. Problemis lois is that if the
heat gets real hot…and after dozeons of attempts to
get you to admit things….they still have nothing.
Have you heard of Benghazi. Just like their own partiys
investigation into Benghazi and the money they wasted
trying to make up lies…THEY STILL HAVE NOTHING!!!!!!
Lois…I’m sure you could tell some great stories about the
        republicans too….you’ve read the papers…and I seriously
doubt the republicans could garner the balls to reall
do something when you have beans to spill on people
        like Boehner and McConnell….and
LET HARLEY SAY THIS….JEB BUSH IS ABOUT TO
BE TIED TO A MIAMI BEACH SCANDAL WHERE HE
WAS THE HEAD ADVISOR TO A HUGE PONZI SCHEME…
ANYONE SEE AMERICAN GREED LAST WEEK?
So keep your notes….we know it’s all politics…and if hearne
would let me reprint te entire article about the irs and its
used by both democrats and republicans it would prove
        this true.
The guys here know nothing. Remember they picked
Romney…they don’t know how to win in life /business
or anything they do. We call them MINCHES.

        • hahhararley says:

so their little games of trying to find something
they can hang their hat on after they’ve tried
dozens of times to investigate something that
          had only dead ends.
When you/re despertate for something to say..
desperate for something to find wrong…you
          stretch the truth.
One of them ….well we know he hates everything
non white…the other was stupid enough to
follow up on the son of a well known family
and try to pin him with a major crime.
These are like the guys who sit around …..drinking
beer til their guts explode….trying to beat Harley.
So far its not even cose. They find a small story
that doesn’t even get national attention or front
page coverage because they are stupid when it
          comes to politics.

The Royal died when the FFA left town and was ensured never to come back when they signed the exclusive deal with KMBC-TV.

  4. chuck says:

    Right outta the park Hearne.

  5. admin says:

And you know, horse and livestock shows just aren’t that sexy in this day and age…

When the best thing they’ve got going is a society ball and a BBQ contest which is basically a one night stand, that pretty much tells the tale.

    Sadly.

Anybody remember when people’s parents and high falutin locals wore those little American Royals lapel pins for a couple weeks when the Royal actually mattered?

How can they get back to that time short of time traveling?

There may be a way, but it’s probably going to have to entail some really creative, aggressive thinking, rather than behind-the-scenes jockeying and trying to bully everybody who doesn’t say, “How high?” everytime Neil Patterson cries, “Jump!”

    • Stephen Pack says:

The Royal’s giving you a bargain in KC — the National Western Stock Show is looking for $856 million to do something similar here in Denver!

      • hahhararley says:

        Denver…look at that city…st. Louis…look there….
        dallas…..Houston…..l.a……look at the cities that
have made huge strides in building some great
cities…because the government realized that working
        with the private sector works.
It will be interesting to see if Denver get the 800 million….
and all they need is 30 million in the yards?
you and clay Chastain must be brothers….NO NO NO NO NO
        NO…NO…..
If you’re nice I can give you the real story on power and
        light…………..
        remember…Harley rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AGAIN HEARNE …FACEPLANT #507…I LOST COUNT.
You attack neal Patterson…..who has done more for this city
than almost anyone besides Larry Van Tuyl over the last
      several years.
Neal and his group literally saved the legends area…bringing
      what 4000 people there everyday.
He’s saving the hideous holes of the former bannister mall…
redeveloped the soccer team into an amazing business success…
built a stadium that will only grow in popularity.
When no one would step up…they did…with their money and
      their voices.
And someone with no business experience (except running some
teenagers in a free paper given away in free brackets) has the audacity
and nerve to critique this man.
You’ve never had to make payroll…never owned a business ….always
had the backside taken care of regardless of success or failure.
The royal can come back. Hopefully it will. It can be done….
      whterh at kemper or downtown.
You’ve been given everything in life. You’ve never had to gamble
it all on anything. You are not one to talk.
Please stop your attacks on the star…one of the finest
families in this city….the real businessmen who have stepped
forward with their money and words…they continue to make
      you look bad.
And hearne after all these years doing gossip and supposedly
hard core news…do you not understand that the world revolves
around politics. Who you know….how you work the system…
its nothing new. Yes..sometimes it gets messy…but that’s
      the system..
and your gang of fools like chuckie….steele and the rest of your
pals can’t change because they just ain’t got the grove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • admin says:

I’m not criticizing the many good things patterson has done.

        Just this one.

And that he’s using bully tactics to get his way

        • hahhararley says:

Hearne…what do you mean horse shows are not sexy….they aren’t
          signficiant…..faceplant for hearne
I’d list the major livestock shows across America but they are too
          numerous.
And I think the guys who are putting this together have more
brains than steele or you do.
After all what have you done significant for charity or our great
          city
In tdoays world…you either grow or die…pretty simple.
You only need to look at the fight over the nfl teams to see
          what can be done.

          • admin says:

I think the ridiculously poor attendance at the American Royal speaks to the local and area interest in horse shows.

Of course there’s a place for horse shows and an audience for them as well.

There’s a market for log rolling and curing as well.

But those folks aren’t in a position to bully local politicians into handing out tens of millions in local taxpayer dollars to them.

From taxpayers who have little to zero interest in attending those shows, let alone paying for them out of their own pockets

  6. hahhararley says:

“horse and livestock shows aren’t sexy anymore”…another wing dinger from
our leader. Are you nuts? Go to see the livestock shows…some merely a
few hundred miles from kc…or the horse shows….but they’re not
sexy according to him. Based on what hearne….Did you know kc
was on track to be the agricultural center of the world?????????????????????????
But its not sexy. Ha we followed the path you called “non sexy” we would
be the center of the world in the production…livestock and horse shows
and revenues maybe in the u.s….if not the world….but that’s “not sexy” enough
for hearne….here s a list you could have gottn asa reporter to refute your own

      Harley plus 1000000000000000000000000000000000!
you said you wanted facts…here it is….read and weep.
      hahahahahah

    • admin says:

      OMG, Harley…

      You got a life?

If nothing else, giving taxpayer money to the same people who have allowed the Royal to slip this far seems foolhardy to the tenth power.

      • admin says:

        Almost forgot…

Classifying the Kentucky Derby as a “horse show” seems more than a little over the top

        • hahhararley says:

you’ve never been to th Kentucky derby.
Its a week long event with parties…HORSE SHOWS…
          meetings….horse trading…..exhibitions…etc….
so how should I put this..

It may surprise you that I’m an honorary Kentucky Colonel, appointed by the governor of Kentucky.

And that I lived there for a year and have spent years working and traveling the state.

  7. hahhararley says:

Now lets look at power and light and your attacks and those of your
    dropout crew.
News reports say the October tax revenue from power and light were
    an extra 1 million dollars.
    Which is great…unless you’re a hater of a city improving itself..like
Denver or st. Louis…or balitmore..or any other city in the nation.
I don’t know kc sales tax or what the tax is downtown…but lets
presume 8%…..that’s an additional 12 million dollars in economic
activity. Now those bars had to buy product (beer/wine/food etc)
which they would pay taxes on. Sales tax for the additional
attendance (estimate only) 40,000 people per game….ticket price
$50….2 million dollars per game in receipts….back out 160,000 dollars
in sales tax dollars. Then how about tax receipts on the food/merchandise…
the hotel rooms…vendors needed to put on the games..and especially
the earnings tax on all those million dollar players….
tv revenue to local stations for games……radio revenue for broadcasting…
huge increase in revenue….plus taxes on earned income from the
janitors at the stadium to the costs of parkingand everything else.
the big picture…..the overall impact with dollars turning 2 or 3 or more
times in the economy mean even bigger
should have been at p and li new years…another huge hit.
Remember p and li opened in the worst recession in history…its had
its growing pains like any business….
but if we didn’t do it …we would have had a dead and decaying city.
now look….at all the new things kc has….the new developments…
    future business generators.
Not all these produce immediately…it takes time
Please move on and let the progressive/forward thinking people of this
town help it reach its potential.
You are part of the group dragging it down…..its time to as they say
in theatrics…its time for you and your gang to ‘EXIT STAGE LEFT”…and let
guys like the cerner boys/Barnett/tivol/kaufmans/ henry block make the decisions on
    how to make kc great.
So please…keep to the facts..if you need economic advice…go see your
financial advisor. I would never hire you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
    sorry….facts wanted…facts presented.
Lets see what youcan come up with.

That’s right. You and Stomper think his idiocy is a good thing for the site? Harley, you wanted Craig’s contract posted to believe it? Post your speaking engagement or it, too, is a lie.

  9. It is hard to see The American Royal from a public perspective. I understand why you have totally missed it.

The Horse Show has some of the most expensive horses on the planet. The owners are the richest people in America. Last year, I sat behind William Shatner, Michael Dell (of Dell Computers) was there with his wife. One of the Wriggley sisters was there with her horse. it is that way every year.

Some of the riders are little rich kids that compete globally for ribbons. They try to earn a spot on The Olympics or the next International competition in South Africa or Spain.

It is amazing that Kansas City has no idea. The Star doesn’t get it, so Kansas City doesn’t get it.

    • paulwilsonkc says:

Mark, we attend a Christmas party at the home of close friends each year. The crowd is jokingly divided into what’s known as “friends” and “horse people.” The hosts happen to be both, were just “friends.” But our friends who host it show at the Royal and all over the country. They went to Argentina to look at a HORSE to purchase. I asked how you get this mega dollar beast back? Airplane! There are a handful of firms who ship horses in commercial planes set up just for them! It’s like shipping a classic car!
It’s huge money and what they spend in monthly stable fees would support most people quite well!!

      • hahhararley says:

who’s house is it. I’ll tell the owners to check everyone
leaving for taking the fine silverware.
And where’s your 10,000 dollars dude? Bring it up
and lets make the bet and I’ll gladl produce video
of what I tell the students…
so far I’ve gotten no response to my offer…and we
can use a impartial arbitrator at your choosing….
I think you’re basically a bag of hot air with nothing
        behind it….
in other words…as your “horse people: would say
at the time….”you’re full of horse manure”!!!!!!!!!
and I’m not the only one saying this sir.

        • paulwilsonkc says:

Yeah, every man I know needs $10,000 to prove he’s honest. You make total sense. You’re such an f’n rube.

    • admin says:

The thing is Mark, while a number of highfalutin people may attend some of these horse shows – flying in on expensive private jets even – that doesn’t make up for the tens of thousands of empty seats and the red ink that accompanies paying to host them.

Can Kansas City really afford the tens of millions of dollars to subsidize events that may appeal only to the very few and the very rich?

  10. paulwilsonkc says:

“in other words…as your “horse people: would say
at the time….”you’re full of horse manure”!!!!!!!!!
and I’m not the only one saying this sir.”

Yes, Harley, the pantheons of business, leaders far and wide, are no DOUBT emailing YOU seeking your input, consultation on topics ranging from current events to the level of manure that makes up my organic being.

Always fun to see how highly you think of yourself. Now be a good boy and go answers the throngs wanting your non existant news letter.
