Steele: Why Star Downplayed NC Muslim Slaying

Craig Stephen Hicks

Each day the Kansas City Star emails “Your Morning News,” a summary of its Top 10 news stories of the day…

Before opening my email, I guessed that the tragic slaying of three young Muslims – two of them female in North Carolina – would not make the top ten, and I was right.

Given the photo of the hulking white man responsible, Craig Stephen Hicks, you would think this a story from newsroom heaven, but unfortunately Hicks is not exactly the white male newsrooms were hoping for.

Apparently Hicks refers to himself on Facebook as a “militant atheist.”

He “likes” groups such as “Forward Progressives,” “Mitt Romney sucks,” and an anti-“tea bagger” group. True to type, Hicks is a fan of atheist honcho Richard Dawkins and transgressive science guy Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Not just an atheist, Hicks is a militant anti-theist of the Bill Maher school.

“I don’t deny you your right to believe whatever you’d like,” reads the text on the lead photo of his Facebook page, “but I have the right to point out it’s ignorant and dangerous for as long as your baseless superstitions keep killing people.”

UnknownHicks had a particular grudge against conservative Christians.

“Seems an overwhelming majority of Christians in this country feel that the Muslims are using the Ground Zero Mosque plans to’mark their conquest,’ ” wrote Hicks. “Bunch of hypocrites, everywhere I’ve been in this country there are churches marking the Christian conquest of this country from the Native Americans. Funny thing is the Christians did that while defying our Constitution, and got away with it!!”

Hicks also declared his support for gay marriage and gay rights in general in several posts.

In sum, other than his apparent fondness for guns, Hicks would have felt right at home in the Kansas City Star newsroom.

Rich Steele is a citizen journalist and head of the NSAAS (Non-Smokers Against Anti-Smoking).

    another waste of valuable space!!!
why not another jewel story…or a piece about brian Williams…or maybe
7 articles of the same drudgery bout the chiefs or royals.
Really steele…who reads the star who has any kind knowledge.
BFD…the star didn’t feature 3 muslims getting killed. Americans kill
hundreds of innocent muslims every day in an air war that will not
solve the problem in the mid east. No big deal….americans are
used to this type of story….and why didn’t you speak out about it
    when it occurred?
then this comment: ” In sum, other than his apparent fondness for guns, Hicks would have felt right at home in the Kansas City Star newsroom.”
your hatred of the star and continued bashing of it as your only stories that
make sense is out of control. You’re saying the killer would feel at home
with the star people…wrong and a statement that is pure crap.
What number was it steele. anyone with a computer or internet probably
already read the story…you’re old and late dude…….if you waited til today
to see more about that story…you need some help.
It was all over tv days ago….and even last night they showed courtroom
footage of the case….DUDE …WHERE YOU BEEN?

Geez, Rich. Pretty sad. Clearly the guy is crazy but your entire post is trying to prove he is a liberal, not a conservative. Really, that’s what you think this is about???

    • admin says:

He’s just having a little fun, Stomps

      • Stomper says:

Ok, so we are now to assume that everything he writes is a parody? I was about to question your choices in your stable of writers who pick on the Star. I understand your perspective as a former Star employee. I also appreciate the cerebral perpspective of Dwight. I was beginning to think you felt you needed a third perspective from someone who swims in the shallow end of the pool.

If you are telling me that Rich Steele is not trying to defend Brownback against the “OCD” tendencies of the Star with serious offerings here and is only trying to be funny, I’ll pass on commenting on his postings. Sure doesn’t read that way.

        Thanks Hearne, for the clarification.

      He IS a liberal wacko.

nice catch on this one. I still think the facts of this look to be that of an ongoing property dispute between a dirt towny and wealthy foreign students.

CNN is running with it like the white community needs to send our version of Al Sharpton to go hold a vigil or something.
