Glazer: Tom Brady Is King, Best Ever, Pats Win!

TOM-BRADY-1Once again, Patriots QB Tom Brady had his night…

Winning his fourth Super Bowl, Brady joined Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only quarterbacks  to accomplish that feat. More important, Tom did it over his entire career, winning early in 2003 and late in 2015.

A 12 year ride as Super Bowl Tom – he played in six Super Bowls – nobody else has that number. It will be a hard one to ever top. Remember you have to be great your entire career and a bit lucky. Will Tom try for one more? Yes!

I don’t want to just put stats up.

However Tom had the most completions ever in a Super Bowl, he has more wins in regular seasons than Joe Montana. To be honest he played well enough in his two Super Bowl losses to the Giants to have won and been MVP of those games.

This was one of the all time best Super Bowls.

There was a time years ago when most of the Super Bowls were let downs.

Not anymore.

There were enough freak plays in this one to fill up several years of OMG moments.

Two unkowns showed up, receiver Chris Mathews for Seattle with the first big catches of his entire career, including a dramatic TD catch to end the first half that looked like a game changer on a 29 second drive by Seattle and QB Russell Wilson.

And then there was he amazing interception at the one yard line by rookie Malcolm Butler who had just given up a “that can’t happen” bomb to Seattle’s Jermaine Kearse, That play looked to be the set up play for a game winning Seattle TD.

hi-res-4a954ac9b87a5a9a2f28399741be54df_crop_northThe Pats did a decent job slowing down Marshawn Lynch.

L. Blount for New England was held in check. However Lynch would have (and should have) won the game in the end had Seattle head coach Pete Carroll not panicked and run down the clock at the one yard line, fearing he’d give Brady too much time to come back and score.

Pete decided to throw over the middle at the goal line on second down. He said it was to burn a play and the clock. WTF. An incomplete pass would have burned almost nothing and it was too risky.

It cost Seattle the game.

Lynch had just been running right through the Pats. They had time to run him 3 times from the one year line if they needed to. He would have been unstoppable. Or Wilson could have faked to him and walked in.

It was the worst call in Super Bowl history.

And no argument, Tom Brady is the all-time best quarterback in the NFL.

Those balls were not deflated and he ripped the Seattle defense to shreds.

Remember, the Pats running game did almost nothing.

And PS, Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman easily could have been named MVP.

He was outstanding and more effective than the Pats tight end  Gronk. I’m wondering, Is Julian Jewish? (He is.)

Great game.

Hey, after a tough year of picks I got the big one right.

See ya next season for my next round of football pix.

  1. Julian Edelman says:

    Who’s Julian Adelman?

  2. mike t. says:

My scoring for the Super Bowl:
Pre-game (the 1-hour before kick-off): C+. This was the Super Bowl, right? “Any given Sunday…” could be used to describe Costas and crew.
Star Spangled Banner: B-. Gal was on key, knew all the words, didn’t flub. But tempo sucked – too slow.
The Game: A+. One of the best and with a dramatic comeback and bonehead play calling at the end.
Halftime Show: B+. Great presentation, super cool technology. Music, eh… Might crack the Top 10 best ever but only because of the showmanship.
Commercials: B-. As a group, pretty disappointing. Even Snickers’ very successful “you’re not you…” campaign seemed derivative and a stretch. Budweiser, enough with the freakin’ Clydesdales and cute puppies already. Nationwide… jesus, really? Just brilliant…a dead kid.

  3. Kerouac says:

First, Kerouac’s thoughts on the game/game recap

Live by the fluke, die by the fluke… the Seahawks gave this game away, no credit to the Patri-cheats – just as Green Bay gave their game away vs SEATT. Poetic justice perhaps, would that both teams could have lost as neither is memorable in any way.

Of note, the MVP was actually deserved by the New England CB Butler, who just happened to be in the right place to receive the Seahawks miracle gift given him. SEATT’s Lynch deserved it more so via 100 + yards & what would’ave been his second td of the game, the game winner.

As well, the guy who was mysteriously gifted with the MVP was exposed this game, throwing two bad interceptions (he doesn’t do so well when the football is regulation pressure.) He ought to be memorizing the late Lou Gehrig’s – “I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech.

So, the Asterisk* Bowl now fini, let the NFL go about its business of dispensing justice upon the caught red-handed deceitful ones from New England.

Upshot: two thoroughly unlikable teams, one convicted cheaters & the other the original fluke-aided thugs… the 1960’s Green Bay Packers would have demolished both these modern day frauds.

As for your thoughts, CG… counterpoints, responses mine.

“And no argument, Tom Brady is the all-time best quarterback in the NFL.”

    – a very subjective take, yours… understanding that in reality there is no such thing as a ‘greatest ever’ whatever, I rank him top 10, maybe even the end of top 5, but not #1. Criteria will always be open for discussion, as well differences nature the game one era to another.

Brady is but 4-2 in final Championship games – not as impressive as Bart Starr’s 5-1, Starr’s NFL record 9-1 post season mark overall, or, NFL record 104.80 post season rating. Too, Starr’s Packers won 3 straght Championships – never equaled, and won 5 in 8 seasons, missing a 6th by a mere 3 points their first try, 1960. That no Superbowl existed during Starr’s first 10 years is also notable; can’t hold that against a QB from a former era. Based such criteria, Brady can’t carry Starr’s cleats.

What of Joe Montana & Terry Bradshaw, both 4-0? Beyond mere numbers, I believe that the QBs yesteryear had a more difficult job than the ones modern day for various reasons which would take too long to elaborate on herein.

Summation, I thought Brady was exposed by SEATT yesterday – he threw two bad interceptions, badly missed a wide open receiver near the end zone on another pass – all told, not the stuff the ‘greatest ever’ would do, and his stats otherwise are moreso the result the modern day game’s emphasis on passing the ball compared yesteryear.

Interesting how different people have different takes on a game, not unlike the eye-witness accounts given the police.

“This was one of the all time best Super Bowls.”

    – I actually thought it was pretty lackluster, until the final inexplicable SEATT move… to each their own, purview.

    • CG says:

K you saw a much different game than most of us…lackluster? WTF…edge of your seat fourth quarter. I agree Bart Starr was a fantastic qb…as was Joe and others…Tom just has the numbers and that 12 year span of Super Bowls with different players and he is jut ‘the man’ you are right other than Ali nobody is the best ever..its all in ‘their’ time frame, in modern football its Brady, before him Joe, before him Bart…so I agree with that one…but the game was outstanding and Tom is the KING.

      • Kerouac says:

We agree to disagree, civilly so…

“Lackluster” in that SEATT goes forever before even getting a first down – a supposedly Superbowl caliber team (that wasn’t the 85′ Bears out there on D for NE) was impotent on offense.

And your “best ever” Brady, a seasoned vet, was no better or slightly – he looked like a rookie throwing up that early int for grabs. No, my opine, neither team was impressive but today’s NFL such must suffice as ‘greatness’, apparently.

Conclusion, how one can give Brady (2 ints) the MVP award is beyond me. I suspect even had SEAT won, Brady would have received it same, as SEAT’s Marshawn Lynch (who I despise) loses out his 100+ yards rushing & big catches, as well game-winning td run that would have been his second not enough to overcome the stacked deck NFL politics today’s farcical league.

To me, Brady winning the MVP was a bit more puzzling than 1967’s Superbowl I, when Starr won it instead Max McGee (several others players and scribes agree with Kerouac that McGee should’ve won it (2 td catches/off the bench to boot.) That day Starr, threw an int vs KC (he only threw 3 all year 1966) and too McGee’s once in a lifetime miracle one-handed behind his back catch was as much Starr’s fault due it being a poor throw. Point being that QB’s more often than not get the advantage voting, emotion too playing a part the very human nature voting.

“other than Ali nobody is the best ever”

        – we also agree to disagree here….. oh to be able put a man up against another, both their primes. If so, Kerouac would take Marciano – undefeated his career – over Clay or Ali, by either name. “Yeah but, yeah but ” a bias in everyone’s quiver, the argument will have to remain the prerogative every opinion.

        • Orphan of the Road says:

Considering Max went on a bender the night before the game as he didn’t expect to play makes his performance even better.

While the stars of the past might not have what it takes today, todays stars would be worse off if they went back.

Would Ali be able to go 49-rounds with Jack Johnson?

          • Kerouac says:

As I told CG, it is all speculation: ‘this guy is the greatest’ (in whatever sport), that woman is the prettiest, that car, that band, that ad nauseam.

As for McGee, yes, if the story is true… I’m not convinced that it is however; stories that grow ‘larger’ with time are not new/around forever, so, #85’s may have been a bit embellished too.

Re: Clay/Ali, who can say… though his career was greater than Mike Tyson’s, I would have liked to have seen him go against Tyson, both their primes (also Tyson vs Frazier, Foreman others.)

Alas, as I get older, mine interest see men bash each other’s heads in venues boxing & football, is waning.

            Shuffleboard, anyone?

            🙂

Notice Harley will be quiet now, since I was correct and broke the game down before it happened the way it went…Harley like it or not I do know the game…I made some picks this year that went south, lots of experts did no better it was an odd season. No excuses I sucked this year but got this one right and will continue to do picks…I often do bet these games as many others do as well so I do care..no not every pick I make is a bet..thank God this year…I had a below average betting football season for myself…happens…

  8. Gravitas says:

Edelman had a GREAT game — shoulda been MVP-

    p.s. — while Edelman’s father was part – jew — his mother was a Catholic –

he was raised as a Catholic — and plays that way .

  9. CG says:

Well Harley you need to write a book it seems. I posted my Vegas best when I went there the last four years..this year I didn’t have a big bet due to the odd way things were going…the others and they were posted were 8 for 10. I’ll take that all the time…my pix the first three years were over 70per cent and posted this year did suck. I agree.

    • hahhararley says:

your 70% for two years was based on you taking one team that
won out of the tease that you lost and counted thatas a win as you
tried to do with dallas in playoffs this year.
don’t work that way glaze….have hearne buy you a book on
betting and handicapping and read it because you’re wrong.
thnx for the memories of picking poor teams n changing
your views like the weather in kc…but a bettor you aren’t…..
maybe stick withcomedy and hospitality because sports
      aint your game. Period!

      • CG says:

H I explained to you how teases work about 9 times…both teams must win to win..we scored it that way…a push by one or both causes a push no bet…simple…remember you, the genius…thought I made up the idea of a tease, they didn’t exist. Remember.

        • hahhararley says:

I knew about teases for ever. But learned from experts
          they are for suckers.
and sorry glaze but you proved it.
so lets clean the slate…itsa new season….a new
year….and stop trying to bang on our royals andcheifs
and root for the local guys.
I understand that when the royals are playing well
it affects your business. I can see your point of view.
but the negativity you put out is getting old.
You’re sounding like a old grouchy grandpa.
          loosen up…have some fun…
and lets hear some more about the hotties at
          woodside asap.
