Hearne: Fear & Loathing at Dropkick Murphys Wilding

Make no mistake, Sunday’s Dropkick Murphy’s concert at the Beaumont Club in Westport was a Grand Slam Home Run for all concerned…

The joint was packed – all three bands delivered – and the intensity level of the Dropkicks laying down encore-after-encore on a stage packed so full of people from the crowd you could barely make out the seven dudes in the band! At first I thought I would be turned away for not having sufficient tattoage/piercing, but we got in fine, after fighting our way through the crowd in front of people outside desperate for tickets (apparently people did not realize it was going to sell out).
Although it appears I attended a different concert because, at the further back, near the merch stand, it was a calm, friendly atmosphere of non-moshing, but still enthusiastic fans.
I saw one old guy give up a stool he was resting a leg on to a very short young female, who promptly got on the stool, kneeling to see the band.
Every once in a while a refugee from the pit would come to the back, covered in sweat, for a bit of a breather.
My question is why the Beaumont Club? They could have sold a lot more tickets, clearly. And I’m guessing 75% of the same people will be at the Uptown to see Flogging Molly in a couple weeks.
Seems to me those are bands somewhat comparable in fan base.
