About last night’s “roast” of legendary KY102 personality Max Floyd at Larry Sells new Conspiracy…
As roasts go it was something of a snoozer – too many warm and fuzzies – not enough cutting edge.
“It wasn’t really a roast and there was nobody that was funny,” says roaster Craig Glazer of Stanford’s. “A lot of it was people talking about their own lives in radio as it related to Max – they didn’t understand the concept of a roast.”

Thirty-six years ago a sleepy radio signal at 102.1 on the FM dial was transformed into Kansas City’s Lifestyle Connection for an entire generation…
The station’s previous call letters had been WDAF-FM playing a syndicated golden oldies format and the ownership applied for and received the new KYYS-FM designation.
The idea behind the new KYYS: to turn the station into a pop-hybrid.

About vaunted KY102 personality Max Floyd’s celebrity Roast January 30th at the Uptown…
Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. event – from $25 to $100 apiece – are available at Ticketmaster and include a concert afterwards with classic KC rockers Shooting Star. Now on to my Floyd flashback that will suffice as my early contribution to the roast.

“Wonder how many of Max’s old conquests will show up for the roast,” one reader sniped. “Maybe someone will drop another salad bowl over his head like that time on the Plaza. Should be a hoot.”
Shades of columns past!
The poster was referring to Floyd’s bygone rep as being something of a “ladies man” back in the day and an incident I covered my first year at the Kansas city Star. Check out the May 22, 2003 column first and then I’ll lay down the story behind the story: Continue reading

Former KY-102 ‘glory days’ general manager Bob Garrett says it’s high time one of Kansas City’s true radio legends receives the recognition he deserves..
And friends of KY-102’s legendary first program director and air personality Max Floyd have been planning it for some time.
Now it’s going to happen!
But wait! This isn’t going to be some kind of exclusive private schmooze or behind-closed-doors love fest! Instead Max will be properly ROASTED…and everyone’s invited to join in the festivities.
Name of the game: THE MAX FLOYD CELEBRITY ROAST, with the bonus attraction of a full concert performance by one of K.C.’s all-time favorite classic rock bands, SHOOTING STAR! Continue reading
