OTC: Mangino Turns On Reesing And History
“I’m not sure I understand this. (Todd) Reesing is a senior. A guy you’ve trusted for four years and you make a switch now? I just don’t get this.”
Ed Cunningham, color analyst, on Mark Mangino’s decision to pull his starting QB in the fourth quarter while down 14 points at Texas tech, ABC
GH: You want unpredictable? You want upheaval? You want weekly drama the likes not found outside Mad Men and Desperate Housewives? Welcome to the Big 12 North – where Kansas is the latest team to hit rock bottom. Read on.
“Reesing benched in Jayhawk loss”
Headline, Lawrence Journal W orld
“Failure stalks Reesing”
Headline, Kansas City Star
GH: What a difference three weeks makes. Mangino has gone from promoting Reesing as a legit Heisman candidate to benching him with time on the clock to mount a come back and win the game. I believe this to be the worst and most controversial benching in my 45-some years of paying attention to the Big 8/12.
“I don’t think it was a big deal.”
Mark Mangino, on his fourth-quarter benching of Reesing, Jayhawk Radio Network
“I was (surprised). I’m not going to lie. At that point, we were two possessions down, by no means was the game over.”
Todd Reesing, Lawrence Journal World
GH: Reesing is the one player you could point to for being responsible for saving Mangino’s job. If ever a kid deserved more rope it is this slight Texan who has taken more shots in his four years in Lawrence than the Moon Bar.
“It has gone from crisis mode to disaster mode for the Kansas Jayhawks.”
Aaron Swarts, 810 AM
GH: Remember the radio ads promoting this football season in Lawrence as one for the history books? As someone once warned, be careful what you wish for.
“The last series he was in there, (Reesing) short-armed two passes and had a fumble. More than anything, I thought maybe Kale (Pick) would give us a little bit of a jump or something. I just didn’t feel good about the offense as a whole.”
Mark Mangino, Lawrence Journal World
GH: Kale needs to change his surname or his position. No QB can succeed hauling around a name like “Pick” on the back of his jersey.
“Has Reesing hit the wall or has everyone discovered that he is a 5-foot-10 quarterback?”
Roger Twibell, 610 AM
“It’s unbelievable to me. You’re down two scores and you put in a kid you’ve never seen throw in a game? There was still time to come back.”
Josh Klingler, 610 AM
“Is Kansas going to get bowl eligible? Who are they going to beat?”
Roger Twibell, 610 AM
GH: Could KU get shut out of a bowl during this season of history? The K-State game on Saturday could be the one that allows them to get back into the Big 12 North race or signals the coroner to come get the body. The Sunflower Showdown is the game of the week in the Big 12 and possibly the game that ruins Mangino’s and Reesing’s KU legacies.
“(Kansas) has got a chance to lose out. If that’s what (Reesing’s) legacy is going to be…what will people think? I don’t know.”
Todd Leabo, 810 AM
GH: Interesting how Reesing’s senior season resembles the frustrating final year for Chase Daniel, Mizzou’s Heisman hopeful from last year. While Daniel is still beloved in Columbia, he is not nearly as revered as was prior to his poor play in the second half of last season.
“Kansas is reeling as bad as they have been reeling in years.”
Todd Leabo, 810 AM
GH: Could K-State catch KU coming to Manhattan at a better time? No. From what I have seen the past three weeks form KSU and KU, you would have to favor K-State by 17 points. But the bookies (aka the betting public) remain nonbelievers. Kansas is a 2.5 point favorite.
“Our offense was inept.”
Mark Mangino, during his postgame comments, Jayhawk Radio Network
GH: Mangino should pop in a tape of Nebraska’s last three games if he needs some cheering up. The Huskers’ offense is so feeble they have inserted a true freshman quarterback and are willing to sacrifice him to the Oklahoma wolves on primetime this Saturday night. Please keep any impressionable youngsters away from the televisions during this one – especially if they have signed letters of commitment to play at Nebraska.
“Everybody in the North is rooting against Nebraska this week. Everybody is a Sooner fan this week.”
Todd Leabo, 810 AM
“This is as hard as I’ve seen a team play in a long, long time – especially in Norman.”
Joel Klatt, Fox Sports studio analyst, on K-State’s comeback effort against the Sooners, FoxSports
“I can’t say enough about K-State and Daniel Thomas. This guy is a converted QB. Took a bit of a scenic route to get to Division 1 football – took a few stops at a few community colleges and had some eligibility issues and whatnot. But this guy is a real football player.”
Corby Jones, Fox Sports studio analyst, on the Wildcats running back/QB, FoxSports
“What I like about K-State is Brandon Banks.”
Joel Klatt, Fox Sports studio analyst, FoxSports
GH: Here is a newsflash to the rest of the North – Kansas State has the two best offensive weapons in the division. A team we thought was bereft of talent has two home-run hitters in Banks and Thomas. Bill Snyder’s team has been elevated from the hunter to the hunted by their heart-stirring performance in Norman.
“When you think about what this K-State team did… Bob Stoops has lost just two games at home in his career as the Oklahoma coach. This is as good as anyone has ever played them in Norman and not won the football game.”
Joel Klatt, Fox Sports studio analyst, FoxSports
GH: Stoops is starting to look more normal to me as far as his coaching and game-day decisions. Big Game Bob has some holes in his game and old coaches like Snyder know how to exploit them. Lucky for Stoops that Pelini, Pinkel and CU’s Dan Hawkins are still learning on the job.
“I thought K-State took a step back defensively. My god, what did Oklahoma have, two punts?”
Trevor, board op and K-State fan, 610 AM
GH: K-State made OU’s offense look formidable. Kansas could get well quickly if Reesing is allowed time to find his receivers. But nothing in Kansas play of late indicates they will be prepared for the pent up frustration that awaits them in Manhattan.
“The game for the Big 12 North title might be Missouri at Kansas State.”
Steven St. John, 810 AM
GH: You can replace Mizzou with Kansas or Nebraska and get the same result. Each team can win out and win the North. Their destiny does not rely on others. The wildest North ever continues.

I’d say Nebraska’s benching of Solich probably had a bigger impact.

Absolutely inexcusable to bench Reesing. The Fat Man was completely scapegoating Reesing for the loss. Sure Reesing didn’t play well, but he was also sacked, what, five times? Not to mention Mangino’s refusal to commit to a run game to help him out. Plus, it wasn’t Reesing’s fault Mangino stupidly went for it with 8 minutes left on his own 35.
And as Greg alluded to, Reesing should be absolutely untouchable this year. He saved Mangino’s job and earned him upwards of $10 million in contract extensions. He deserves a little more rope than what he got Saturday.
This move has the potential to completely ruin the team chemistry in Lawrence.

The downfall stated occured whne the Heisman trophy talk started, then the refs took away touchdowns in Boulder, and then …. it was : (
There is a lot more to football than Xs and Os and plays. The morons at Arrowhead do not understand this, and you see the results. The coach has to understand all the little things, who knows……who knows?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Mangino’s offensive gameplan is void of variety and surprise. Tech ran a cover 2 with little blitzing all game, and KU never adjusted. He hung Reesing out to dry. Reesing hasn’t been as good as the last 2 years, but he’s not the reason for KU’s losing streak. Offensive coaching and a terrible offensive line.
that said, if KU beats KSU, MU and the Corn, they still win the north. Any of those teams scare you?
November 2nd, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Good takes by Todd Leabo and 810WHB. Roger Twibell and 610….not so much….
810 scoops 610 once again!

“…that said, if KU beats KSU, MU and the Corn, they still win the north. Any of those teams scare you?”
KU would be well advised to be scared of all of them.

cliffy??…really??
cliffY..
how gay can you be? scared?? .. I dont think so.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Daniel Thomas the best offensive weapon in the Big 12 North? HAHAHAHA! Laughable. Denario Alexander has that title. This past weekend’s loss at @OU was the best anyone has played and lost? What a stupid comment. MU was leading Oklahoma IN Norman in 2007 in the 4th quarter. The ended up losing by 10. That’s WAY better than the KSU performance this weekend. KSU never lead in this game.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:36 pm
You sound plenty scared to me, Boss. You should be. You’ve probably won your last game in this “season of history.”
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:39 pm
It takes balls to do what Mangino did in benching Reesing. My opinion is that it was the right move at the time. K-State still lost. If they play that game 10 times KSU loses every game by an average of 21 points. OU did just enough to win. Bill Snyder is still BIG HAT, NO CATTLE. Winning the North is like being Miss Montana at the Miss USA pageant.
November 2nd, 2009 at 3:59 pm
I didn’t agree with benching Reesing…but he has been off all year. Something just isn’t right with him. That being said, he is a guy with a short memory and could come out and light it up this weekend. Then what will the natives have to say.
November 2nd, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Old man kissel once again wheres the scoop,OU was up by 21 and quit playing OU football. They let the Cats back in and then when it got close see ya.OU would be the Cats 10 out of 10 times. If you listen too real sports radio and not K STATE RADIO you would figure out OU was never in an trouble,Stoops probably felt sorry for the old timer Snyder and called the dogs off. 610 kils 810 once again
November 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
mangino had too much pasta friday night. The
red sauce f*cked up his head and it caused him
to forget that reesing made him the coach he
is today.
This pig coach needs to apologize to reesing and
the rest of the team for being an idiot. Pulling
reesing in the game was stupid.
But all coaches reach a turning point. They hyped
up KU this year and probably mangino didn’t want
that. It was too much pressure on the team and
they felt it. Making this year “historic” was pretty stupid by the AD at KU.\
I really like reesing. He’s a tough player who never gives up. He’s got guts and a great never
give up attitude.
Mangino will never see a qb this good again.
They will never recruit anyone like reesing.
I’m a mizzou fan and I’ll be glad when he graduates because for all his fault the kid knows
how to scare the hell out of all us mizzou fans.
As far as the big 12 north..who cares. I’m looking for mizzou to go 8-4 or 9-3…get a
decent bowl bid in this tough rebuilding year
then come back next year and kick some ass.
OU/Texas/ok state/and KU are losing lots of
good players and it could be a chance for mizzou
to really break through in the big 12.
Mangino has done a good job…but too much pressure on him and his players laid the groundwork for a bad season. This is definitely
not a “historic year”…and its not “history
making”….
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I want to say it was a bad move by Mangino, but…
I wonder if it was Mangino’s way of sending a strong message to his senior QB. Despite being down “only” 2 possessions, I felt NO WAY Kansas was going to come back. Perhaps Mangino realized that Kansas North hopes were almost gone. So by benching Reesing, it screams at Reesing and the whole team to wake the f**k up.
It’s not over for the Hawks, but damn close. Maybe Reesing has one last run in him.
November 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Emmett, 810 scoops 610 once again!
November 2nd, 2009 at 11:54 pm
WAIT A DAMN MINUTE HALL — where was your recognition of all this KState talent, that you are apparently now seeing, earlier in the season? We knew about Banks and Thomas from the getgo. Where did you screw up?
Could it possibly be that coaching is the difference? Could it be that you were wrong in your earlier assessment of Bill Snyder in his return to the sidelines?
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:26 am
I DON’T GIVE A SHIT. Im so sick of hearing about
losers and bad players that I’ll cheer for
anyone who does something decent.
Shit…I’ve never been to K state but I hope
they win all their games but one (against MU)
I can’t wait for ku basketball so I can watch
a winning team and a classy coach.
Shit..I’ll go to The other place in downtwon
overladn park and cheer on Iowa with those
folks…even though I’ve never been to iowa
except to drinki.
I’m sick of watching those east coast pr*ks
win everything. Boston/NY/Philly…can’t we
get a decent team and kick their arrogant
asses.
This is pathetic.
November 3rd, 2009 at 8:49 am
KU’s offense has not been that great all year and although Reesing is not doing well I think it is the result of two things.
#1 Jake Sharp being hurt. Sharp could make defenses at least respect the run because of his speed. The injury has slowed him down and he is not as quick as last year. That means they just assume Reesing is going to pass and throw the kitchen sink at him to sack him.
#2 The offensive line is not as good as previous years.
I think Mangino just felt that Reesing was having a bad day and that changing quarterbacks might provide a spark. He has done this before in his career at KU with quarterbacks. I think he was reaching for anything because this season is slipping away very fast. Desperate coaches take desperate measures.
A terrible year so far for the Jayhawks and probably not going to get better. Although a win against K-State would make us feel better and stop the losing streak. I would not bet on it though.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:17 am
Pt,
You have been pounding this site with missives that you and your KSU brethren had zero expectations for this season. Now you want us to know you were all aware of the firepower that Thomas and Banks have shown? Doesn’t wash.
Could I be wrong about Snyder’s return? Oh yeah. But caution my son. It is this same happy self-back slapping that has the Jayhawks looking like fools only a few months after they prematurely declared victory in the North. Again, beat Kansas and then MU or NU and Snyder will have proven me wrong. Lose to all three and we merely have Coach Prince w/o the wins over Texas.
November 3rd, 2009 at 9:42 am
jojo,
GREAT post. It really DOES feel like loserville around here. It’s depressing.
Greg,
Could you do us non-KSU fans a favor? Wildcat fans are obviously an over-sensitive and insecure bunch and need a pat on the head every now and then.
So…
Could you write a whole OTC column praising all things K-State? Don’t point out that K-State has only 1 NCAA tourney appearance in 13 years or that MU, KU and Nebraska have recently owned K-State football. Instead, point out how K-State basketball has finished in the Big 12 top 4 for 3 years straight (!). Or how K-State football beat an up-and-coming, well-coached Iowa State team and throttled another up-and-comer, A&M (!). Then explain how much you love the coaches…make up a story how you spend evenings with a Bill Snyder blow-up doll or that you sometimes wake up in a sweat dreaming of Frank Martin.
Remember, happy K-State fans are great OTC-blogging K-State fans!
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:35 am
As Greg said: K-State fans are big, fat, white farmers in purple overalls…..nothing more..nothing less.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Old Man Kissel,You show yourself as the biggest idiot on this page keep it up,good job we are waiting for some more too laugh at.610 kills 810 again.
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:59 pm
No expectations doesn’t mean no talent. It means you don’t EXPECT much from your team in the coming year. Nubbers, Squawks, and Tiggers all expected much from their team.
We knew Thomas was good. We knew before Snyder returned that Banks was good. They’ve been consistent in their performance. Your analysis of what we had was clouded by your desire to be correct in your expectation that Snyder would fail in his return.
And as for your mis-call on Snyder, you need only compare the handling of QB’s between KSU and UK to see what good coaching is, and what it isn’t.
Keep firing though. Crow gets tender the longer it cooks.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:06 pm
“Nubbers, Squawks, and Tiggers all expected much from their team.”
Not the least bit factual and generally a gross over-generalization of the truth. The ‘Tiggers’ were not picked to win anything and lost several key skill players.
The Tiger faithful new this year’s team would be wildly inconsistent and a chance to compete for the north championship would be best case scenario.
November 3rd, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Maybe if Reesing had raped a girl (allegedly) the night before the game then Mangino would have let him play.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
CN, no cotton-pickin’ way! You’re not getting off-the-hook on this one. Mizzou was blaring the strumpets after their blowout of a bad Illini squad. You Tiggers have short memories.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:30 am
“The Tiger faithful new this year’s team would be wildly inconsistent and a chance to compete for the north championship would be best case scenario.”
This opinion did not change after the Illinois game. Only the media’s coverage of Gabbert as the next QB superstar in the league changed.
Give me your prediction for the KSU/KU game this weekend. I’m on the fence. Part of me believes Reesing is going to come out gang busters to quiet the doubters. Yet, that KU defense is still struggling mightily. Should be fun to watch.
