Jazz Time: Who said the CD was dead?

mark

We’ve all heard about the demise of recorded music– that CDs are gonna look as ancient as the 78s in grandpa’s living room cabinet (the ones next to the stamp collection and pipe rack). But don’t tell Kaycee’s jazz scene. They’re still pressing the plastic– hey, it’s a great reason to have a CD release party like these:

Wednesday: Sax player Mike White releases a CD entitled “Tiempo” at Jardine’s from 6  to 8. Backed by one of the finest rhythm sections in town– Paul Smith on keyboards, Bob Bowman on bass and Mike Warren on the drum kit– this tasty collections of classic jazz sides features Mike’s mellow reed tones throughout. If you can’t make the party, buy a copy of the CD at http://www.delasallecenter.org/delasalle.aspx?pgID=977 . All of the proceeds from CD sales on Wednesday benefit DeLaSalle Education Center’s good works. Good work yourself, Mike.

Friday: Angela (as in”voice of an angel”) Hagenbach’s long-waited CD gets the Jardine’s party treatment on Friday with two shows at 6 and 8PM. If it’s anything like her other great recordings (I’m especially partial to her lilting, breezy phrasing on Dreamweaver), you can bet it will be smooth and satisfying, but with that soupcon of sass that Angela fans know and love. And, of course, it features some of the best players in town.

Saturday: Still another Jardine’s CD release party, this time for the great saxophonist Kim Park. That one goes down at matinee time– 2 to 5PM. That should give you time to go home and take a nap, Euro-Latin style, so you can have dinner at 10 and head down to the Mutual Musicians Foundation at midnight, where my 12 OCLOCK JUMP hosts its late night jazz, blues and comedy jam, broadcast live on KCUR. Why mention 12OJ in a piece about CD release parties? Because Carol Duboc will be singing a number or two from her new release, an ode to the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David that jazz flute player Hubert Laws played on. It’s Hubert’s birthday this week.

Of course, you don’t need a CD release party to enjoy David Basse with Jerry Hahn sitting in at the R Bar, 1617 Genessee from 8 to 11 on Thursday, Nov 5. Ida McBeth will be knocking em out at the Blue Room Friday from 8:30 to 12:30. Joe Cartwright swings at Stroud’s Wednesday nights. Wednesday night, check out Spirituality and all that Jazz at Unity Temple on the Plaza. They’re celebrating keyboard king Tim Whitmer’s birthday with special guests Millie Edwards and Everette DeVan. It’s all good.
