OTC: Are Chiefs Fans Confusing Patience w/ Apathy?
“Where’s the intensity (from the Chiefs’ players)? Where’s the fire? I’m not seeing guys perturbed. They’re not perturbed and they’re not doing well. They’ve kind of accepted it.”
Len Dawson, 810 AM
GH: The same can be said for many of us Kansas City fans. Have we become too accepting of less-than-mediocre sports in our city? Have we confused patience with apathy? Read on.
“Just about every decision these guys (Scott Todd) have made and every little bit of luck they could have had has been wrong.”
Kent Babb, Kansas City Star beat writer, 810 AM
“I haven’t been impressed with any of the draft picks this year by this regime.”
Todd Leabo, 810 AM
“I think it’s 2012 before they become a contending team. There are too many holes to fill in too short a time.”
Frank Boal, 810 AM
GH: 2012 is three long seasons away. Is it still reasonable to give a new GM and head coach four or five years to compete for a NFL division title? Has it ever been?
“I can’t think of a (NFL) team that is talking about a three- or five-year plan (for success). You better show some progress in year one and in the second year have that thing humming or you’re out of there. That’s just the way it is.”
Cris Collinsworth, 810 AM
GH: Who among us Chiefs’ fans believes we will be humming anything but Swing Low, Sweet Chariot next December?
“I think these stadium deals are starting to create a gap between the haves and the have nots. Will we begin to see baseball happen in football? Will some of these big-money teams start separating?”
Cris Collinsworth, Showtime
GH: Collingsworth did not mention the Chiefs’ franchise by name but did he have to? The dramatic change this season from tight games to blowouts has everyone asking if franchises like Kansas City are starting to lose not only on the field but at the bank.
“I am contracted to buy my (Chiefs’) season tickets through 2012. I can opt out with a mere 10% penalty.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: How are the Chiefs getting anyone to sign a long-term contract for season tickets? No wonder Arrowhead looks more empty than Bo Pelini’s closet.
Corey Mays is a JAG – Just Another Guy. He makes plays when nobody blocks him.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: Mays is one of the very few pleasant surprises on this Chiefs’ defense. The only jag here is Petro.
“People need to get off Matt Cassel’s back. People need to understand that he has nothing! He’s got a rotating offensive line in there. The running backs stink and every week he’s got a new receiver running around out there.”
Nate Bukaty, 810 AM
“(Cassel) is making some fundamental and mechanical errors and he should be passed that by now. I have not yet seen this year what I think justifies that contract. I just don’t think the decision making and comfort are there yet.”
Kent Babb, Kansas City Star beat writer, 810 AM
GH: Cassel looked lost last week against the Chargers. No accuracy, no leadership, no game. His upcoming game in Jacksonville is a big one. He should be able to get some time to prove he is not nearly as bad as he looked last Sunday.
“I am a season ticket holder and I have watched every game. I don’t see anybody out there playing harder than Larry Johnson. Everybody is calling in and wanting to crucify the guy. You can’t blame the guy for getting frustrated.”
Caller, 810 AM
GH: I had no idea LJ’s agent was a season ticket holder.
“I’m going to guess the first time LJ read that apology was in The Star.”
Steven St. John, 810 AM
“I’m surprised Larry Johnson apologized. I’m sure he didn’t talk to a lawyer because you know you never admit (your guilty) until they’ve got something on you.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: How sad that we are now surprised when a person as guilty as LJ admits his guilt rather than runs from it.
“Maybe he thinks that he can force his way out (of Kansas City). Let me ask you this, of the other 31 teams in the National Football League, who in the world is going to bring him into their locker room? … To me, the guy doesn’t have the skill level to warrant the kind of BS that they’re putting up with out there and I would not be surprised to see them run him right out of town.”
Marty Schottenheimer, Sirius Radio
GH: If the Chiefs do run LJ out of Arrowhead, it will be his longest run of the season.
“The players, if they’re not performing, they’re shipping them out! So what’s the difference with Larry expressing his feelings about the coach not doing his job at the level he said he was going to do it at? I can’t see any difference. The only thing is that Larry can’t fire Todd Haley. He can’t ship him off to another team. What’s the difference? It’s the same thing. He’s expressing it and the organization is just showing it. Same thing to me.”
Eddie Kennison, KSHB TV 41
GH: Let’s just guess that Eddie probably wasn’t on his high school debate team.
“You hear you can’t hire an old football coach because the young players can’t relate to him.”
Phil Simms, Showtime
“Players relate to somebody who can help them win football games and help them make more money.”
Warren Sapp, responding to Simms, Showtime
“Bury him.”
Tim Grunhard, who favors not releasing LJ but instead burying him on the bench, 810 AM
“I’ve had people make fun of me before because I was Catholic. I’ve had girls in high school I couldn’t date because I was Catholic.”
Kevin Kietzman, trying to relate his experiences with those who might be hurt by LJ’s slurs, 810 AM
GH: KK might want to reopen the investigation as to the source of these made-fun-of incidents.
“I really think it’s going to be the best World Series we’ve seen in a long, long time. Possibly the best we have seen in this decade.”
Jeff Passan, 810 AM
GH: Fox’s camera crew does a great job broadcasting big-time sporting events. They spotted Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and Alec Baldwin in the stands Wednesday night. My favorite movie for each is as follows;
Kurt Russell — Overboard. Goldie Hawn never looked better and I still laugh a dozen times every time I watch this movie with my wife.
Kate Hudson – Almost Famous. An absolute classic! Kate’s Penny Lane character is unforgettable as is this movie. Frances McDormand’s portrayal of William Miller’s mom is maybe the best movie mom ever. I love this movie.
Alec Baldwin – Glengarry Glen Ross. Baldwin has a small role as Blake but he delivers the most memorable lines of the flick. I also liked him in Pearl Harbor, a movie I find much more watchable than does my bride.

Bukaty is right- you just can’t evaluate Matt Cassel’s performance based on the CRAP that surrounds him. The dude had a guy in his face EVERY SINGLE TIME he dropped back to pass last Sunday. Hell if I was Cassel I’d audible to run plays most of the time he’s instructed to pass. Branden Albert should be the ONLY returning starter on that O-line next year. The rest of them probably wouldn’t make the cut as reserves on most other NFL teams.

Greg nice complete story of a sad tale…you and I have talked about…all this…before the season…and both agreed we would be this bad..we are.
Like you I was a fan of Matt C’s,Scott and Todd, but I have to admitt, this thing is not headed, well, anywhere. Yes we have the least amount of talent ever put on an NFL field, but I just don’t see much positive direction from the top so far, QB,GM, and head coach…draft was an f-, as bad as it gets, we got uh, nothing, maybe an ok defensive guy,Jackson, thats a big maybe, so far a huge bust..he’s done close to nothing, ok he’s done nothing…
The fan’s I can’t blame them, we have been a bad team for too long, lets face it, Dick’s team was bad too, flashy, but never for real..sorry we had the NFL’s worst D under him even in the somewhat phony 9-0 start and crappy ending in 03, we ended as a near joke…Indy never punted, and our D was footballs worst……ever….ever..
Since Marty, we have built nothing, we have nothing, our team is crap and will continue to be…the way its going….for years …maybe decdades like the crapy Royals are…..
The hope….MONEY…only fix is Clark Hunt and the no CAP, he has to buy a team and right now…Greg I agree we are way to far gone to be fixed in five drafts….We are empty….not one true NFL Star on the team…maybe and its still a maybe…Matt C will be one, not yet…and he is getting destroyed mentally and in everyway…but Matt..grow up….lead the team, he is not yet a leader….get out there and make something happen Matt…its on you to do that a bit….
LJ….hey he is not any longer a good player so yeah, he gets jacked, did he do anything that bad..uh, not if he was say Marcus Allen or Adrian Petterson…but he isn’t…there are far worse crimes in the NFL recently than his…Vick, lets face it he was a major, major jerk and dog killer for no good reason, bad guy…Ray Lewis….lets face it he was directly involved in murder and he knew it…so on and so on….end with this, Would Ali have been charged with Rape as was Tyson in same circumstance…then sent to prison…answer NO…he was too good and too popular…ala Coby Bryant, same thing…and by the way I don’t Coby or Tyson were guilty…do you…?
We all just keep saying the same things…our sports teams are terrible now so is KU and MU, so sad…oh well Jayhawks Basketball soon…thats about all we got…

truly the chiefs will be the havenots. According
to the bookies in vegas, the odds of a team turning around quickly anymore are pretty
tough. Because of the caps and other incentives
for players to stay with a team, there won’t be
the movement of players that’s been seen in the
past. That means team with the best eye for
talent and the best packages to keep talent on
that team will be winners.
Bad teams stay bad from here on out. Oakland/
KC/Detroit/and other teams have been bad and
the outlook remains that they will stay bad.
Why? According to people smarter than me, the
good players/impact players are not moving.
They are staying. Of course there will be some major player moves but now with caps at 100 million a team can afford to hold onto their
best players for a longer length of time.
And with tv revenues drying up, fans not showing
up, and other economic problems teams will have
to not reach the cap limits arev easily as they
did before.
For Hunt, the outlook is bleak. You have a new
coach, a new scheme and you have a major revolt
about to occur between players and coaches.
I’ve heard one player say that the offense and
defense palyers are so tense now that there will
be a major blowup soon that could kill the
teams “rebuilding” year.
Hunt’s an ass. He’s not putting money back into the team. He says screw the next few years, I
have money coming in from shared profits and I
can outlast the economy. His renovated bathrooms offically open next year so he can
skate with that bullshit marketing campaign
and still get some good crowds. Problem is that next years home schedule won’t be as attractive as this years was. That means some serious
cash shortfalls at arrowhead next year.
Also, st. joe training camp could pump up the
fans next year and that could be a way to get
enthusiasm up for the team.
However, new laws are lurking on capital gains in the next few years. Hunt if smart might want to
think about selling the team and making off like a bandit with 800 million bucks. If the gains
taxes change, Hunt’s investment takes a hit.
More importantly, jackson county and kcmo are
broke. The rich jackoffs looted what money was
left in the coffers and now someones got to pay
the piper.
Of course to the fans this means nothing. Except
that if both the royals and cheifs continue to
slide revenues willnot meet outlays and we could
see all hell break loose.
Hunts a mother fucker. He continues to screw the
incredible fans here in kc. While his dad
waspassionate about the team and the game itself,
clark is passionate about the money..and nothing
but the money.
Underspending the cap this year was met by announcements that therevwere no good players
to go after. True. But next year the player pool
gets even less attractive and we’re stuck with the current players strggling to win 1 or 2
games.
Its the perfect storm for the cheifs. And the
perfect storm to kill the royals. The owners
waited too long to make their moves. Both should
have gotten name/experienced coaches quickly
and rebuilt the farmsystems. It’s going to be
a long/long road to respectability and wins in
this town and an even longer road for the
county and city…and an even worse drive for
those of us who still love our teams.

So crazy old Lamar scares Kansascitians into passing a sales tax to give a quarter billion dollars to the chiefs, they put in some more women’s bathrooms and bank the rest, and now the Chiefs are a “have-not?”
Kansas City, you’re getting what you deserve. Stop going to games.
October 29th, 2009 at 11:41 am
No fire in their bellies. Grab the big check on Tuesday, get beat Sunday. I’m ready for those 22 guys. There’s four or five of my good ol’ boy neighbors that would be happy to suit up, get jazzed on some of that pro joy juice, and beat the hell out of some strangers without fear of going to the Clay County Jail. About $25,000 a game and a couple of combine payments, and I’ll bring you some of the meanest MF’s since the Longest Yard. With the money they’d save, they could buy The Unicoach some decent clothes. Maybe if he looks like Hank(Stram, not Kimble),he could win a few games with some of those cats from the hood, KCK, Orrick, and North East. Give me some gangbangers, rednecks, and wiseguys. We might not win, but we’ll cover the spread.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Holy shit! Glazer gives us the WAR and jojo adds the PEACE. Nice! Guess KK was sick in Catholic School the day they talked about marital fidelity and blow jobs. The penis is for making babies only Kevin. KC is the capial of style over substance. In another decade we’ll be sucking the twin-tipped Magnaflows known as Omaha and Des Moines.
Man, I see in Kansas City the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no baseball team. No football team. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Paul why can’t we evaluate Matt Cassel’s performance from this season? Ego-li evaluated his preformance last season in NE and gave him millions. Now that he doesn’t have Randy Moss to throw too, giving all those millions to him seems like a bad idea.
Matt Cassel= Scott Mitchell.
810 scoops 610 once again!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
We can’t evaluate his numbers form this season because????????………..it hasn’t been a season. It hasn’t even been a freakin half of a season. It’s like judging somone’s breakfast cooking skills and all you have done is taken a sip of coffee and a bite of toast. Can we not at least be FAIR? Maybe give EVERYONE a full 16 games. Heck we gave Carl a zillion years. Chill people.
October 29th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Just laughted out loud in a quiet office while reading ManDshagger’s take.
Pssst … Keitzman … it wasn’t because you’re a Catholic that the girls ran away from you!
October 29th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
“KK might want to reopen the investigation as to the source of these made-fun-of incidents.”
Yes, and he might also want to review the reasons he couldn’t get dates too.
October 29th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Thanks to whoever saved me for my terrible previous repeated posts.
Greg its about fairness not apathy. After say your first 6 or 7 Off The Couch reports in the KC Star, would that been a fair evaluation of your talent and ability? Or are you glad they allowed you to grow and work out some of the rough edges of your writing? Did you come out the gate writing great or was it a process?
October 29th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
rick,
Hell, I’m still a process and I’ve been scratching out OTCs since 1994.
I’m willing to give Scott Todd more time but I don’t see their current problems as youth and inexperience. It looks more like they just added more mediocre players to the ones who were already here.
Bill Maas made a great point earlier this week on 610. He mentioned how Marty NEVER talked about a “process” or a multi-year plan. Marty told his boss, his team, and his fans that he expected to win — now. No excuses. There is something to be said about athletes playing to the expectations (low or high) of their coach.
October 29th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Whosenheimer, whatsenheimer, Schottenheimer Polka, the way that Haley coaches team is something of a joke-a. Are they high on heroin, mary jane or coca, whosenheimer, whatsenheimer Schottenheimer Polka.
That Pioli it turns out really is an asshole he gave up the 60 mill to that fucker Cassel, pretty soon little Clark might wind up a little broke-a whosenheimer, whatsenheimer, Schottenheimer POLKA!
October 29th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Greg-point taken on the Maas statement. Concur.
In regards to the adding or replacing mediocre players with more or different mediocre players. What was the option? Is their a lot more superstar athletes sacking groceries at Hy-Vee waiting to be discovered?
October 29th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
“I am contracted to buy my (chief’s)season tickets thru 2012. I can opt out with a mere 10% Penalty”
I’d like to be able to hold a gun to my customers heads.
October 29th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
rick,
Pioli was hired because of his/their success in acquiring talent in New England — through the draft and free agnecy. He’s only had one draft w/o Hoodie but it appears to be a stinker. His second will need to be stellar or we’ll remain cellar dwellers.
October 29th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Baldwin’s best performance was in ‘The Hunt for Red October.’ And I don’t even like the guy.
Carry on.
October 30th, 2009 at 6:02 am
Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken in Escape From New York. Alec Baldwin is unwatchable. Kate Hudson in anything. She’s smoking hot. I just hope, for her sake, she’s not catholic. Or at least don’t tell KK.
October 30th, 2009 at 7:11 am
Greg, when Maas made his comments that you brought up was his high on blow at the time?
810 scoops 610 once again!
October 30th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Stop! Gavin-time.
October 30th, 2009 at 11:15 am
Greg-I think this is the key line “appears to be a stinker”. We both know that sometimes it takes years to fully evaluate a draft. So it just goes back to what I’ve been saying. We need to be fair and let things play out before we go all ape crazy and cry the sky is falling. We have years of information to make on say a judgment on K.K., Whitlock, Bill Synder, etc. But with these guys its just way to early to say a lot with substance. First impressions is what we are talking about.
