Jack Goes Confidential: Dressed for Kill with Fashion’s Queen of Mean!

Jack
I’m going to be perfectly honest with you….
(editor’s insert; like what, for a change?)
The week after Labor Day is never much as far as new movies go.
So instead of boring you with the likes of WHITEOUT with Kate Beckinsale, SORORITY ROW starring Brina Evigan and Rumer Willis or Tyler Perry’s (unscreened for critics) I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF, I’ll go in a different direction.
Specifically looking at a fascinating new documentary about the $300 billion dollar fashion industry called THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE.
What’s in the title?
With the September issue always being VOGUE magazine’s biggest and most popular monthly publication, director R.J. Cutler’s primary focus here is on its legendary Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour and how her annual September issue actually comes together.
From Fashion Week in NYC, to Paris and Rome—shoots and re-shoots, and closed-door meetings with powerful fashion retailers—you’re part of it as VOGUE’s highly influential fashion queen matches wits—or better, lets the fur fly.
Yet almost stealing Wintour’s spotlight is VOGUE’S Creative Director Grace Coddington who’s been with ‘The Devil’ for more than two decades and, at times, making for odd and awkward moments between these two dynamic, yet opposite women.
Did I say DEVIL?
Sure did! You all remember Meryl Streep’s hit-film THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA a few years ago?
Well Meryl portrayed Anna Wintour in that movie.
So your next question would probably ask whether Wintour is the ruthless, bitchy and cold-as-ice executive Streep made her out to be?
Hard to tell since Wintour was wired-for-sound and probably very much aware of everything being filmed and recorded.
But let me assure you that some of those uber-bossy traits and interactions with underlings and associates DO come through on the screen!
As I mentioned earlier in the piece, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE is a surprisingly fascinating trip down (High) Fashion Lane for which I’m snapping 3.5 out of 5 fingers.
The documentary is opening as a limited engagement in Kansas City.

We live in Independence but there’s no theatre near by showing ‘The September Issue’
It would take a jaunt to Overland Park or the Plaaaaaza. So we better stick with the Popular Mechanis September issue.
