OTC: MU’s Gabbert Amazes / Snyder’s KSU Not So Much

greg

“We’ve never seen Blaine Gabbert before. Not in a Missouri, Kansas or Kansas State uniform in the last 30 years. …Before he departs for the NFL, Gabbert should be in the Heisman race, and Mizzou should be in the national-title hunt.”
Jason Whitlock, following the Mizzou QB’s impressive debut against Illinois, Kansas City Star
GH: Pork Chop is known for issuing hyperbole of this magnitude too often to take him seriously. The Chiefs’ 16-0 prediction comes to mind. I too think Gabbert is special. But from a reader’s standpoint, I would like to see Whitlock invest more effort into his declaration that Gabbert is the next Brady Elway Tiger Woods of football. Before Saturday, I would be surprised if JW would have been able to pick Gabbert out of a lineup that included Juice Williams, Zac Lee and Bobby Lee.

“Oh my God! I almost fell out of my chair! …(Gabbert) has more tools than both Brad Smith or Chase Daniel.”
Steven St. John, on Gabbert’s play against Illinois, 810 AM

“Brad Smith debut may have been more surprising, but I think Gabbert’s debut was more impressive.”
Gabe DeArmond, 810 AM
GH: I am going to disagree with GD. Smith was flat-out brilliant against the Illini in his debut, in a game that was pressure packed and filled with clutch runs. Gabbert was great, but it was far easier and with a much more talented cast of teammates.

“Gabbert’s going to make every Mizzou fan on this planet forget all about Brad Smith and Chase Daniel.”
Jack Harry, KSHB 41
GH: Okay, a quick reality check here. One game does not a Heisman-winner make. Gabbert was sensational. He has incredible physical tools topped off with a right arm we haven’t seen since the likes of Sidd Finch. But he is a sophomore QB with one start under his belt. He looked bothered when pressured Saturday. His mechanics were less than text book (but that rifle at his side made up for his back-foot throws). He played in his hometown with the Illinois crowd out of it early. He will struggle at times this year – possibly mightily at times. Does this mean he’s not great? No. It means he’s a rookie QB in a very good league. Keep that in mind and you’ll be able to enjoy the ride much better.

“Call me a homer but we’re supposed to fill out these Heisman ballots each week and I have Blaine Gabbert at the top.”
Dennis Dodd, MU grad and a well-known Mizzou homer, CBSsportsline.com

“(Blaine Gabbert) reminds me of Brad Smith as a runner.”
John Kadlec, Mizzou radio analyst, Tiger Radio Network
GH: I saw nothing in Gabbert that reminded me of the one-dimensional (but deadly) Smith. Kadlec on the other hand reminded me of Kadlec from last year and the 10 years before. He offers so little to the Mizzou football radio broadcast that it cheats the listeners. He also sounds like he is winded after four words. John needs to retire now and allow the MU football radio broadcasts to attain new heights that the program has on the field.

“It will be a three-team race against Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska – and any one of those three teams can win it. You’re crazy if you can separate one of those three teams right now. All three of those teams should be considered the favorite. The other three teams (in the North) I think have no chance.”
Steven St. John, 810 AM
GH: I still like Mizzou to win the North by a couple of games. Nebraska and Kansas did what was expected in week one but neither looked as impressive as the Tigers. I am also a bit concerned about the turmoil Mark Mangino apparently has brewing with Dezmon Briscoe and some of his suspended teammates.

“Look at how our expectations have completely changed for some teams after one week of college football.”
Nate Bukaty, 810 AM

“For people who were looking or hoping for Colorado to be the dark horse, well, that’s fine. The Colorado offensive line play was terrible!”
Steven St. John, in a not-so-subtle message to KK and Clink, who both picked the Buffs to win the North, 810 AM
GH: It appears the North can be divided into the haves and have nots. CU, ISU and KSU look to be hapless. Of these three, the Cyclones may be the only one who ekes out a conference win. The Colorado/K-State game could end in a scoreless tie.

“I don’t really mind the hire (of Bill Snyder at KSU) because I don’t know who else you could have got. I don’t know who else wants that job. Maybe they did the best they could.”
Jason King, 810 AM
GH: There are plenty of qualified and talented college coaches who would love to accept the challenges that Kansas State presents. It is my opinion that K-State never bothered to look.

“Not only is this (K-State) team bad, you just don’t know how bad. Having 19 juco guys in the program and having to rely on a bunch of them. ”
Mick Shaffer, 610 AM
GH: I listened to the UMass game and it sounded a lot like Snyder’s last few teams at KSU. Coach Snyder’s postgame remarks where he sounded embarrassed by his team’s play and lack of “spirit” were telling. I really wish Coach would have stayed retired.

“If you’ve got issues offensively (in the Big 12 North) then you’re already behind the eight ball, because everybody’s defense is crap! Everybody’s defense in crap and Kansas’ offense is by far the best in the North.”
Mick Shaffer, Metro Sports sportscaster, 610 AM
GH: Mizzou Fan might want to argue with Shaffer’s assessments but it is a bit too early to tell. Let’s play a few games into October and see how these teams shake out.

“I just don’t believe that we’re supposed to believe this (Notre Dame) team has turned the corner… I’m not even going to mention (Lou Holtz’s) name because his credibility is about shot, the former Notre Dame coach.”
Dennis Dodd, college columnist for cbssportsline.com, refusing to speak the name of Voldemort Holtz, after Holtz predicted Notre Dame would play Florida in the BCS Championship Bowl game, 810 AM

“I think you’re on an island right now with that Notre Dame pick.”
Kirk Herbstreit, to Holtz, ESPN

“I wasn’t the only one! There were a lot of people who picked Nevada (to upset Notre Dame).”
Dennis Dodd, after he was reminded Tuesday that his Nevada pick was a stinker, 810 AM

“A heck of a television game.”
Bobby Bowden, Florida State’s head coach on Miami’s 38-34 win over his Seminoles, FoxSports.com
GH: Love Bobby but man, does he need to retire! Watching him on the sidelines Monday night, he stood mostly alone with no headphones and often a scared fan-like look on his face. He may as well have been sitting next to me on the couch. When he did step up late in the game and offer a possible play to the offensive coordinator, the OC never even looked away from his clipboard. Should Bowden’s wins even count now that he is simply a placard of a head coach?

Love him or hate him, Whitlock is the only reason to pick up the Star anymore. 610 hire this guy back. He’s the only one who can save your station.

    810 scoops 610 once again!

  • JS Says:

Setting expectations so high for a person after one game is disastrous. He won’t be able to live up to his own hype. Gabbert may be good to great but what happens if he doesn’t duplicate that game again? I hope he is great but let’s temper expectations until we see a body of work.

As usual Jason Whitlock is idiotic and if he says something is going to happen I would bet against it.

  • oscarfactor Says:

Jeez, it was ILLINOIS! Stop annointing Gabbert as the Savior. Let’s see how well he eludes a decent pass rush, and how he bounces back from an Ohio State-like hit that Corby Jones once took.

  • smartman Says:

Big Sexy aside I think most MU fans feel better today then they did on Friday. Let’s see how the next game shakes out.

  • JimmyD Says:

I only wish Pork Chop would stop mentioning Jeff George in his articles. Talk about played out. The only thing worse is when he writes about that Homer T. Whatever. Whenever I see his column is about “Homer”, I immediately go to the baseball box scores

  • Paul Says:

I agree Greg- John Kadlec SUCKS ASS as the analyst on the MU radio broadcasts and he needs to be Norm Stewart-ed out of the radio booth. He reminds me of Bill Grigsby the last couple of years on 101’s Chiefs radio broadcasts….HAVE ANOTHER DRINK, KADLEC!

  • Ptolemy Says:

Why all these high expectations for Snyder at KState GH? It’s his first year after a three-year disassembling at the hands of Prince. Must he have the program completely back in the first game of his first season back?

I was at the Mass. game. Coffman is showing himself to be the QB he was coming out of high school – a D1A grey shirt more suited for a NAIA or D2 school. The only reason he’s a scholarship athlete at KState is because Prince ran all the other candidates – Snyder recruits that either started or are starting for Big 10/Pac 10 schools – off. Look for Gregory to take the position by the time he learns the offense.

JOJO IS BACK. I KNOW YOU ALL MISSED ME.
WAS IN PUERTO MORELES (between cancun and
playa del car) playing with my girls titties and
the ____________. Ay carumba! My bueno…
Got back…got into the real world…and read
some of your posts. I’m more popular than the
glazier guy and I’m not starring in a hollywood
    blockbuster.
Any way good to see all you losers are still on
here. Noone got shot labor day weekend. No
one got thrown in jail and the idiot who does
handstands on a canyon is still doing burpees
and standing jumps. Hall…that was an incredible
story about the 60 year old dude. He deserves a
shout out. Too bad the old wrecks on this site
don’t keep in shape. For rick and old man the
only sprints they do is from their couch to
tghe refirgetor to get a beer.
So hall was right. My tigers did well. But as
a tiger fan for 20 years we learn that just when
the thing gets rolling, something bad happens.
So normailly i would expect a loss this weekend
to bowling green or to nevada but I’m going with
the fat black guy and thinking that this gabbert
guy is pretty good. He still has a long way to
go to reach the levels of other MU q.b.’s but
    he did look good.
I appreciate you all remembering me in your
insults. It’s good to know that you all had nothing better to do on a 3 day weekend but to
    post on this site.
Hearne showed photos of lezak naked ( I’m sure
rick downloaded that) and the old coots were
in heaven seeing thier favorite tv personality
    half naked.
I noticed that you guys on here need to get
a life. Posting these items at 9 or 10 pm is
really really sad. Maybe get a subscription to
a porn channel because your lives are really
in bad bad shape. Or go buy a blow up doll
    and jack off in that.
Oterhwise is great to be home. I drank lots
of rum and cokes…checked out the nude beaches
in tulum…partied in cancun..and found the most
increedible italian restaurant south of cancun

  • greg Says:

My expectations for Coach Snyder II were never high. I’m the guy who has been dreading his return to the sideline like yet another Stones’ tour. Let us remember Snyder for his succession of top 10 hits, not his days as an old man trying to rediscover the magic that has long faded. Time is no longer on his side.

  • Dexter Morgan Says:

MU fans seriously think they beat a legitimate team on Saturday.

  • smartman Says:

Hey jojo, welcome back. Una cara usted tiene como punta de la puerco. Can’t speak for the others who post at strange hours but maybe they are trading stocks on foreign exchanges. And why in the hell would you go to Mexico? People that live there don’t even wanna stay. Please don’t say it was for the cheap hookers. I’d be disappointed in you if you pay for a “good time”. I’m sure you have lots of ladies waiting for a shot of MANTHRAX from your weapon of ASS DESTRUCTION. Si?

  • Ptolemy Says:

If your expectations for Snyder II are not high, why are they featured so often in your column? Nearly every KStater queried has stated this is going to be a tough year. KState won their opener. Oklahoma lost theirs, as did Colorado. Texas gave up 20 points to Louisiana-Monroe. No mention of that??

KStaters have enough on their plate without having to defend being kicked when they’re down. Kick us when we blow out chest out and fail, but keep your feet holstered when we consitently concede the presence of low expectations.

  • Jack Harry Says:

“Gabbert, two years and he’ll be gone”….god,I love Mississiouri….I need another cocktail..

  • jojo Says:

hey smartman…no…i don’t pay for hookers..
but you and the guys on here do.
As far as mexico…its the best vacation spot
within a 3 hour flight. Warm beautiful weather..
great beaches…we had an incredible house..
    lots of booze and ganga…sunsets…parties…
while you smartman are posting on blogs like
this. If you are a trader you probably ain’t
got 2 nickels to your name. You have no
smarts and you can’t spell. And you want me
    to believe you
‘re not some voyeur on some porn sight
    at 2am.
    As I said…get a life. A real life.
And try getting out of kc sometime. There’s a
whole new world outside your mom’s basement.
And greg…good luck in the football game.
I’m not quite that old but its great to see
guys fighting mother nature and staying in
shape. I read the website from the gym in
tuscon…wow…it sounds tough. I do boot camp here in kc but am getting bored with it.
Need a new challenge. And congrat hall..you
    were right about mizzou.

  • Old Man Kissel Says:

JimmyD, it’s B.A. Homer. It’s a column making fun of homers who never think anything wrong of their team. So he writes a column giving the homers a reality check.

He use to write B.A. Homer columns all the time in the mid ’90s when Chiefs fans thought King Carl and Marty walked on water. He also gave a few to Royals fans who thought David Glass was the brave knight who saved the Royals from folding.

It’s a great column if you ask me. Saying what needs to be said though a character.

    810 scoops 610 once again.

  • JimmyD Says:

Kissel, I’m familiar with Whitlock’s Homer columns. I just think they’re stupid. Saying what needs to be said through a character is not my idea of a good writer

  • smartman Says:

I dunno guys but jojo doesn’t seem the same. Could we have a jojo wanna be among us?

  • Notsayin Says:

I can not comment on that, cuz I would never post to a blog at a time of day which might seem inappropriate.

    PS
wtf is up with a negative douche whom tells vaction stories to people he does not know, on a blog no one reads. That is the epitome of a sad pathetic life, and it is what we expect from MU fans.

  • ManDshagger Says:

I think it’s a jojo wanna be too. Doesn’t have the same jojo vibe.

Notsayin, as long as jojo is blogging we know he’s not molesting young children. It’s like a community service thing.
