Six Degrees of Drew: So Many Names, So Few Digits
Atop the infinitesimally small slagheap of local rockers with extensive groupie-like followings stands the artist-formerly-known-as Drew.
I say formerly because these days the lead singer of the band Drew6 goes by – what else? – Drew Six.
That’s Mr. Six to those not on a first name basis with the popular pop star.
The cougar magnet’s girlfriend even lists herself as “in a relationship with Drew Six” on her Facebook page.
“Yeah, I have a girlfriend,” Drew Six says. “I just try and keep my private and personal life separate.”
The reason for the faux last name?
“I don’t want to be looked up,” Drew Six says. “I don’t use my (real) last name – I learned that the hard way.”
Yeah but why pick a digit?
“Here’s the deal,” Drew Six says. “The band is Drew6, the number. Then I use S-i-x as my pen name. Years ago I tried to use just Drew, like Madonna, but it didn’t work.”
There’s more, something about the six degrees of separation…
The use of a number as his last name has sparked other side effects.
“Once I started using it, I started hearing from all these other people whose last name is actually Six,” Drew Six says.
OK back to the groupies…
“We call them Drew-gars for the older set and Drew-pies for the younger girls,” Drew Six confides.
The secret of Drew Six’s sex appeal – suggestive lyrics and onstage body lingo aside?
“To the band, it’s my hair and my teeth,” he says.
No telling how many Drew-gars and Drew-pies are out there, but it’s safe bet you’ll find a passel of ‘em down front on the dance floor at pretty much any and every Drew6 concert.
“Our mailing list is between 3,000 and 4,000 and I would say 98 percent of them are women,” Drew Six says.
