Hearne on the Street: Star Splashes Down Three Months Late With Pool Scoop

hearne

Just how slow on the news draw is today’s Kansas City Star? You make the call.

At 5 a.m. today Star business writer Joyce Smith posted a breaking news story online under the headline “Ultra-pool coming to P&L.” She added a suggestion to “call it an Oceans of Fun for the sophisticated set.”

What, people who drag downtown to get hammered atop a grocery store, rooftop pool are more sophisticated than the Oceans of Fun crowd? Remains to be seen.

I digress.

*** More to the point, Smith’s story – posted online, ostensibly where the immediacy of important breaking news matters most – comes nearly three months after Rafael Architects formally announced and posted photos and a detailed description of the P&L pool project on its blog!

*** Smith’s scoop follows a month-old Tony’s Kansas City’s post about the pool, gleaned from the Rafael link.

*** It follows KC Confidential’s scoop two weeks back that the pool would be called The Jones (after the vaunted Jones Store that stood for decades on the block) and sell memberships while offering cover charges to the general public.

*** It even trails my Sun Publications column two weeks ago noting that The Jones would go head-to-head with the thriving Saturday afternoon pool party scene that’s been going down for years at Woodside Health & Tennis in Westwood.

*** Want irony? Weeks – months even – after the fact, the Star’s hot-off-the-presses pool “scoop” has yet to be revealed to its remaining paying customers, as in print edition subscribers. Front page Friday, anyone?
