OTC: Royals Lose 19-1 To Twins / Big 12 Weighs In On Nebraska’s Departure

greg

“We are having Clark Hunt on the show tomorrow…any questions you’d like us to ask him? … So far, 11 people want me to ask Clark Hunt to buy the Royals.”
Steve St. John, as the Royals were drilled by the Twins 19-1 at home in a Greinke start, Twitter
GH: We knew the KC Royals’ fans were ready to move on from baseball to get primed for the football season but it looks like Ned’s Speds have decided to toss in the rosin bag as well.

“OMG. Can’t sleep. Turned on @FOX_Sports_KC Just seeing Twins lead @Royals 19-0 top 8.”
Kris Ketz, of whom it is rumored never sleeps but always tweets, Twitter
GH: Ketz ability to forego sleep has me thinking he might have enough vampire in him to turn Sookie’s head. I think Ketz is a news-pire. I am guessing that Royals’ score didn’t help his insomnia.

“Come on! How can anybody be this bad?”
Jack Harry, on the Royals’ 19-1 home loss to the Twins, TV 41

“Maybe Jack Harry is right on this (Glass wants to sell the Royals). But whether he’s right or he’s wrong, unfortunately for him his reputation is where it is now where the assumption is going to be that he is wrong.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM
GH: Jack Harry has a credibility issue. His close association with Kevin Kietzman doesn’t help. If KK or Jack say it is so, does that mean the rumor is a no go?

“I believe if Ned Yost does not re-sign with the Royals and instead signs with another team next year, I think it will be the single lowest moment in the history of the Kansas City Royals! I want you to tell me if there could possibly be a lower moment in the history of the Royals than that? There will be no lower moment in the history of the Royals if Ned Yost doesn’t re-sign. Nothing could be worse! Rock bottom.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: I am not sure if Kietzman was looking to cause a flood of phone calls or just felt a need to say something ridiculous Monday afternoon. Ned Yost? Hey, I like the guy but he sure the hell ain’t Whitey Herzog. This is the problem when you own the station and you are the station’s most popular talk show host – you don’t have a boss to tell you not to say stupid stuff. And this one was Kenny Kenny stupid.

“What a PR disaster it would be! What a message it would send to Royals’ fans everywhere!”
Kevin Kietzman, on the need to re-sign Yost, 810 AM
GH: I am going to venture a wild guess that 50% of the Royals’ fans at The K Monday night would have been unable to ID Ned Yost from a photograph. I would up that to more than 90% if you took the same survey on any street corner in Kansas City or Overland Park. I hope Yost stays, but if he goes no one is going to hardly notice. A couple more ass kickings like Monday night and he might get an escort out of town.

“Rock bottom! Perhaps unprecedented in major league history!”
Kevin Kietzman, on the need to re-sign Yost, 810 AM
GH: Do you think Kietzman knows what hyperbole means? Does KK really think this shtick works? Maybe he’s just trying to get quoted in my OTC.

“It’s been two months to the day (July 26, 2010) that Jason Whitlock last filed a column in The Kansas City Star. We don’t always see eye-to-eye on things but I do enjoy reading him. I look forward to reading what Whitlock writes. If the Kansas City Star loses him, that’s a pretty significant loss.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM
GH: The Star continues to report in their newspaper that Whitlock is simply on vacation. For two months. While on vacation he publicly ripped one of The Star’s Holy Grails, the APSE awards and those who cherish them. If he does return to The Star, don’t expect his column to last long. We have all seen this before from Jason and his employer – and it never ends well for Jason’s future with that employer.

“I have almost no professional respect for (Whitlock) but he’s still interesting.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM

“I’ll bet they outdrew half of the Chiefs’ games last season.”
Kurtis Seaboldt, on the 52,000 fans who attended the Man U./Wizards friendly at Arrowhead, 810 AM
GH: How much will the stadium improvement increase attendance at Chiefs’ home games this season? Very little. Clark Hunt may be very proud of his team’s newly refurbished digs but getting sellouts to once again become the norm at Arrowhead is going to come down to playing winning football.

“To be perfectly honest, my game-day experience really wasn’t all that much different.”
Nate Bukaty, comparing his experience at the new Arrowhead this week for the Wizards/Man U match to previous years, 810 AM
GH: I was surprised at Bukaty’s review of Arrowhead, particularly because it differed so greatly from almost every other talking head who was in awe of the stadium’s improvements.

“I don’t think that will be the case this year but a lot will depend on how they do in the (Monday night) opener against San Diego.”
Soren Petro, on the Chiefs’ attendance problems in 2009, 810 AM
GH: Could the Chiefs’ attendance woes really hinge on their home opener? Owning a sports franchise can be a real kick in the nads.

“My expectations for this (Chiefs) team is 8-8. I think 4-12 is a disaster. I think if (Haley) goes 4-12 he’s got to go.”
Soren Petro, 810 AM
GH: The Chiefs’ schedule is such that six wins is almost a given and eight a very real possibility. If the team does tank, Scott Pioli and his shade-pulling pirates aren’t safe either.

“I think (Nebraska) thinks of this as their victory lap through the Big 12. We’ll see if it plays out that way.”
Danny Clinkscale, reporting from the Big 12 media days in Dallas, 810 AM
GH: Tom Shatel of the Omaha World Herald checked with some Big 12 scribes as to what they thought about Nebraska bolting to the Big 10. Read on for some of their responses.

“I think some Iowa State fans are resentful (toward Nebraska). They think that Nebraska is thumbing their nose at the Big 12. … Some of them are upset at Nebraska for being too big for the Big 12.”
Randy Peterson, writer for the Des Moines Register, Omaha World Herald

“They’re disappointed because it’s such a good football school and people like playing them. Everybody sort of likes them. Nobody’s resentful. Seems like a pretty natural thing for me. Oklahoma fans are a little melancholy about it, especially since the non-conference games don’t set up for those two to play for a long time.”
Berry Trammel, writer for the Daily Oklahoman, Omaha World Herald

“I don’t think they’re resentful.  … I think (Texas) feels like the conference took a huge hit. It’s a diminished product, a diminished league without Nebraska.”
Chip Brown, Orangebloods.com

“From Nebraska’s standpoint, I don’t fault it at all. They’re going to a more prestigious conference, athletically and academically. … The traditionalist in me hates it. I grew up in Colorado and went to Missouri. I hate to see the old Big Eight break apart. But I think they did what was best for their school and it’s up to everybody else to deal with it.”
Pat Forde, of ESPN.com, Omaha World Herald
GH: Interesting that it appears the teams in the B12 South have a completely different take than the North squads on Nebraska’s departure. Shatel should have interviewed Kietzman for a whopper of a take. Read on.

“I think it’s going to be real interesting to see how Nebraska games are officiated this year. I really do. … I know this; this league if they have their way, they do not want Nebraska in their championship game.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: So now KK is dropping inferences that Big 12 officials will cheat as a group to make sure the Huskers don’t win the North? This isn’t radio ratings were talking about here.

“My wife’s giddy expression while purchasing Star Magazine’s “Stars Without Makeup” issue has no sports fan equivalent.”
SportsGuy33, Twitter
GH: Any man married to a woman can relate to this tweet from ESPN’s Bill Simmons. My wife has yet to come across a female celeb who is even mildly attractive. The older she gets, the uglier the actresses get. Being a man who understands these things (and knows Angelina Jolie is not walking into my living room anytime soon), I simply nod my head and say nothing.

  • SM Says:

Does Nick Wright ever actually talk about sports? Seems like he spends more time criticizing other members of the media than actually doing his job. Does he aspire to knock off KK or Greg Hall? He would say the former; his actions suggest the latter.

And Greg, in response to your question “Does KK really think this shtick works?”…I would think a quick look at the ratings at any point in the last decade would answer that adequately. Over-the-top or not, it very clearly has worked for a long, long time.

  • Ptolemy Says:

Without listening to their comments, anybody could predict that the South schools would be indifferent to Nebraska thinking they are better than everybody else, and in Texas’ case, they’d do so after a long laugh in the face of the fact that the Huskers were 1-7 against the Longhorns. As for the rest of the North, what stupendous feats have the Huskers achieved since TO left to make everyone else anything less than peeved that somebody from the state of Nebraska believes that their shit doesn’t stink?

Mangino was right when he complained about the officials favoring Texas when he had them on the ropes several years ago in a game that would have cost them a BCS bid. It’s not an organized thing, but you can damn well bank it, if you’ve watched Big 12 officiating over the years, that if the call is a close one emotional leanings will play a part in the call, and Nebraska is going to have a heap of that on the negative end this season.

  • nick Says:

I must be in the minority of listeners, ’cause over the summer doldrums of sports talk, I’ve been most comfortable listening to Josh Klingler’s reasoned positions against Fescoe. Occassionally I listen to Rome and Nick Wright for the humor and entertainment.

I’m done with KK and Petro until late August. KK’s living in Bizarro World or someting. Petro’s over-analyzing of everything is tedious.

Last night, Mad Jack Harry finished his sports segment saying if the Chiefs don’t win at least 8 games, then Haley has to go.

    HUH?!

Has crazy talk by the local sports media ever been THIS bad?

  • MrOlathe Says:

I just don’t get the resentment to Nebraska. As a Kansas fan, I couldn’t be more indifferent. I travel KS, NE, & MO and KSU folks are in a tizzy. I just don’t get it. Can someone explain? PT?

  • MrOlathe Says:

PT…That’s the 1st time I’ve ever heard a KSU fan acknowledge what a bullshit call that was. Mangino was right at the time. KU got fucked. It’s a shame that MM was hated so much by KSU fans…at the time.

  • Ptolemy Says:

Mangino’s a monumental ass for the way he handled his exit from the KSU staff back in 98/99. That being said, none of us have ever demeaned his coaching ability. We still hate his ass, but he’s a fine football coach.

Mr.O, I don’t know about KStaters being “in a tizzy.” The explanation that best fits in characterizing Nebraska’s situation is they are running away from Texas and they are going to be facing considerable hostility from the fans, especially the old Big 8 ones, throughout this coming season.

  • MrOlathe Says:

PT…not sure that “none of us have ever demeaned his coaching ability” is accurate. I’ve heard itfrom plenty of K-Staters. And although there are a lot of folks out there who aren’t happy about the Huskers exit, it appears that KSU is spewing the most venom. Most of the south is shrugging their shoulders, MU can’t believe it’s not them, ISU, well, they don’t really matter, CU is gone, and KU is mostly indifferent.

  • Ptolemy Says:

I don’t think KU is indifferent. If they are, it’s sad because they had the longest running playing streak with Nebraska, and not caring about that ending is thumbing your nose at a lot of great players over the last 100+ years. But that is KU these days — all basketball and nothing else.

It might better be explained, with all the ancillary problems in Lawrence and the realization that they might be transitioning their football program from the likes of what Oklahoma went through going from Barry Switzer to Gary Gibbs, that they are simply occupied with other fears right now.

  • MrOlathe Says:

Hmmm….no, I don’t think that’s it. Perhaps indifferent is not exactly the word I should use. Sad to see 100 years of competition go away. But never really a rival. And good for them. Had KU received the offer, we would have gone as well. And, although you may see it in your own purple eyes, the sum total of the employee theft that took place at Kansas might end up less than the “secret payoff” of your former football coach.

    Donkeypunch sez:
Reason why KSU homers are upset is b/c they (KSU) just saw their lives flash before their eyes and realized they are nothing without the Big XII. Of course they are upset…..they were just exposed as nothing more than leeches

  • Cliffy Says:

I followed Ketz on Twitter for about 2 days. WAY too much stuff. I think he’s kind of creepy.

Is this the second KK rant about signing Yost? I think I heard those same remarks over a week ago.

I think KSU, KU and MU were ALL sufficiently humbled by the near conference collapse. I don’t recall any conferences beating any of their doors down to become members. I do recall Bill Self whining and crying to anybody who would listen about KU getting the cold shoulder.

    ___

GH: These comments were from KK’s Monday rant (his second sicne last week). He entertained us with a third today.

  • Interloper Says:

I do find it very interesting that so many people have such short memories when it comes to the Big 12. Anyone thinking that the University of Nebraska is thumbing its nose at the rest of the conference is simply forgetting how the conference was formed and what the genesis was to many of the conference’s financial competitiveness and challenges. You don’t have to look much farther than Austin to be reminded.

So, when you’re holding up signs and yelling off-color remarks this fall that deride the university and its sports teams, you’ll do well to do a bit studying about the conference’ origins before hand.

If you want someone to blame, I suggest you mess with Texas.

  • MrOlathe Says:

Bill Self whining? WTF Cliffy? I recall him accurately discussing some disappointment that football held all the cards, which he understood. He was confident that KU would end up OK. Which it did. And if the Big 12 had not remained intact, KU probably would have landed on its feet as well. Where? Not sure.

  • Cliffy Says:

Self came across as a desperate whiner who was (justifiably) scared to death KU was about to get left in the dust because basketball doesn’t matter in conference realignment issues. Just sayin’.

  • Gavin Says:

Cliffy, I had the same experience with Ketz. My Twitter feed simply got overloaded by the guy. I had to dump him.

I’m with Mr. Olathe. I don’t really recall Self whining. I do recall him expresssing some concerns, but as you noted, everyone affiliated with any of the “local” schools expressed those. Well, except Ptolemy, who was as sanguine as a special needs kid at snack time. He was never worried. But you were and I was. All Self did was give voice to the same concerns we had. You want to talk about people whinging and obfuscating and looking all “What?! We didn’t do anything!”, I’d look to the Governor’s mansion and the troika Nixon formed with Deaton and Alden. Now THAT was some epic whinging.

  • Cliffy Says:

I’ve said before Mizzou admin looked stupid. For example, it was ridiculous and silly for Alden to hold a news conference to insist that Nebraska’s allegation that Missouri started it all was “ridiculous and silly.” The problem with some of you KU guys (like Mr. Arm Pit of Kansas …er … I mean Olathe)can’t seem to admit anybody at KU ever does anything wrong.

  • Gavin Says:

The closest thing I could find to Self doing any “whining” was this, from the Lawrence Journal-World:

Asked if he was personally upset with CU, Self said: “I wouldn’t say upset. Without saying anything negative … I am sure they are thinking … I’m sure Colorado is believing the domino effect has occurred and we didn’t want to be left behind. They obviously were attractive to the Pac-10 for their respective reasons and everything. I am not upset with individuals but more upset that, in the purest form of competition, how things are being driven so much by where you live or how many homes are in your state. Or, ‘Are you tied to other schools?”

He went on to state the obvious, that there are a lot of factors outside anyone’s control, like TV markets and whatnot and he also alluded to the fact that he thought KU would end up in a “big” league and was marketable, but how is any of that whining? Is it not acceptable for him to satte the obvious and admit that he is concerned? Or is there some other, whinier comment that he made that I can’t seem to find?

    http://www2.kusports.com/news/2010/jun/10/self-reacts-news-colorados-departure/?mens_basketball

  • Cliffy Says:

Sounds a little whiney to me, Gavin. But thanks for sharing.

  • Gavin Says:

Cliffy, I’ve actually grown to respect you quite a bit, but accusing Self of whining isn’t the same thing as being unable to admit we’ve done nothing wrong. You will recall my own posts where I used some rather strong language to express dismay over the ticket office scandal. I’ve also been up front about amditting that I was pretty damn scared during the conference realignemnt overreaction. And I’ve been pretty open about admitting Lew Perkins’ faults while also pointing out his strnegths. I realize that’s been just me and I don’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t think anyone has been here saying that the ticket scandal was anything other than bad, have they?

But to conflate KU’s supposed inability to admit to anything wrong with Bill Self somehow whining isn’t only inaccurate, it’s unfair. Self didn’t whine about anything. He just expressed his opinions and his concerns.

But I think it’s weird that on one hand you accuse him of whining but on the other you seem to want KU to acknowledge something was bad or went wrong. Separate the ticket scandal from conference realignment and tell me what KU did wrong regarding the whole realignment mess. I think our Chancellor was a bit out of touch, but other than that, I cna’t think of a single thing KU did wrong during the realignment talks. I’m sure you can, but we all admitted it was a huge concern, we all admitted we were possibly in trouble. What else do you want?

  • Gavin Says:

Fair enough. I guess we have different definitions of whining. You apparently want KU to make some kind of admission but get to dictate whether that admission is somehow adequate. I think that making an admission isn’t the same thing as complainng. Tomayto tomahto.

  • Gavin Says:

Hey Everybody! Gil Meche is done for the year! Awesome. And the gift of Trey Hillman overworking his starter keeps on giving.

  • MrOlathe Says:

Clifford…do you really want me to break out the list of accolades that wonderful city of Olathe has received in the past 10 years? What are you gonna throw back at me? Kirksville? West Plains? Joplin? Cole Camp?

  • Cliffy Says:

I respect you point, Gavin. But as is usually the case, you’re taking things too seriously.

When Bill Self speaks KU fans (like Mr. Asshole of the Metroplex … er I mean … Olathe) see Jesus Christ in a sweatsuit. Everybody else sees a stutterer with a bad toupe.

  • Gavin Says:

I will absolutely concede that I take stuff too seriously, but just so we’re clear, we see a stutterer with a bad toupee too. We just see OUR stutterer with a bad toupee. Just like with Mangino we saw OUR mobidly obese tantrum-throwing coach. Sort of like how you can make fun of your own idiot kid, but other people can’t.

  • Uncle Dick Says:

Olathe is one of the nicest cities in Mexico.

  • Cliffy Says:

    Fair enough, Gavin.

  • MrOlathe Says:

Clifford…1st of all, they’re plugs. 2nd of all, i as well as most fans and I would assume reporters, appreciate Bill Selfs honest, from the hip answers to any and all questions. No coach speak. The guy is solid. Even most of my ksu and mu friends agree with that. And if you are making fun of the way Self speaks, what about Anderson? Ouch!

  • Cliffy Says:

A lot of racists in Olathe, I presume?

  • MrOlathe Says:

Didn’t you just poke fun at a person with a speech impediment?

  • Kia Zi Says:

I really wanted the Royals to win. I just wish that, regardless of all the problems, the players would go out on the field and win their games. They are suppose to be professionals. I think they could do it if they wanted to. Conspiracy groups say that sports is politicaly controlled and that a small no body city like KC will never be champions because the big important guys always get the win and the money. But I wish the Royals would take the field and win, if for no other reason to just blow minds and prove every one wrong. Why can’t they win more of their games? It doesn’t make sense to lose all the time. I know someone has to be the loser but why does it always have to be the Royals?

  • Kia Zi Says:

    Oh yea, and go Mizzou!!!

  • Cliffy Says:

Mr. ICan’tAffordtheNiceSuburbs: Founder of the NAABS (National Association for the Advancement of Bald Stutterers).

  • MrOlathe Says:

Clifford…so you are saying that you would rather have Mike A as your coach because he has hair and doesn’t stutter? And I could go all double wide/meth jokey on you but if you’ve ever been to Olathe you’d probably wise up a bit.

Of all the idiots who got into this big 12
crap (including myself) the one person who
handled itall with the most class and

While everyone including myself) was playing up
football and how it was soooo important (including myself) bill sat there with his
thoughts to himself understanding that some people were taking his team for granted.
As much as I want to kick KU”s ass every year
in football and basektball…I still believe there is no classier/nicer/down to earth
    coach than bill self.
Spent an hour talking with him at sullivans
one night and we had a ball…and I made him\
make me one promise (which he did not fullfill)
…tht was that he take it easy on my mu tiger
    basektball team last year.
Is KU basektball not big…hell yes it is….
and while I hope they always lose to my tigers
I still pull for them the rest of the season.
While i and others forgot about self…he
