OTC: Buffaloes Start College Realignment Stampede!

greg

“On behalf of The University of Colorado students, faculty, alumni and fans, we are proud to accept this invitation from the Pac-10 and join the most prestigious academic and athletic conference in the nation.”
Philip P. DiStefano, Colorado Chancellor, FoxSports.com
GH: Holy Ralphie! The first domino turned out to be a buffalo chip. Armageddon is no longer just a bad movie.

“This is an historic moment for the Conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth. The University of Colorado is a great fit for the Conference both academically and athletically.”
Larry Scott, Pac-10 commissioner, FoxSports.com
GH: Tremendous growth? Larry ain’t talking about adding Colorado State. The Big 12 South is already packing.

“I think Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will all leave for the Pac 10. They will have to make a move for the 2012 season. I’m not sure this is necessarily a long-term solution. My gut feeling is that Texas would still love to go east to the SEC.”
Keith Moreland, color analyst for the Texas Longhorns, 610 AM
GH: The Pac 10/Texas schools’ marriage strikes me as odd as well, but now is not the time to slow dance. Do the Horns and Sooners own boogie boards?

“The Big 12 Conference has been informed that the University of Colorado has accepted an invitation to join the Pacific-10 Conference. I continue to work through the process that was agreed upon last week by our Board of Directors to address membership issues, and are working tirelessly towards the long-term viability of the Big 12.”
Dan Beebe, Big 12 Commissioner
GH: Boobie, I mean Beebe, is going to have plenty of time to catch up on his tireless sleep real, real soon. What a joke of a Big 12 meeting he held last week. Can you still fire the commissioner even if there is no league?

“Are we gonna see with this new bargaining agreement a world draft?”
Soren Petro, discussing the MLB draft during the noon hour while I was looking for Big 12 talk, 810 AM
GH: 610 Sports busted out of their Jim Rome network show to go live with Bob Fescoe and Shan Shariff. The two morning hosts had completed their shifts but they were back on the air with talk and interviews concerning CU bolting to the Pac 10 – while Petro went on and on and on with one of those riveting Baseball Prospectus nerds. Score one for Avis.

“Major Big 12 Guest on at 2:45… maybe no one is more affected by potential break up of league than the man we will talk to at 2:45.”
Nick Wright, Twitter
GH: Wright is supposed to be doing cutting-edge sports talk radio on 610 Sports. So why oh why does he constantly rely on this 1960’s advertising ploy of teasing his audience to get them to listen? Lame.

“One logical projection would have Nebraska, Iowa, Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota in the West and Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, Purdue and Indiana in the East.”
Teddy Greenstein, writer, on the projected new Big 10, Chicago Tribune
GH: That B10 East looks very doable for the Huskers football franchise.

Hey slappy, you plan on stealing all my thoughts today (please see your previous blog) or just this one?

  • Steve Says:

I don’t have a problem with either of the local stations covering something other than the implosion of the Big 12. After listening for half an hour, you have pretty well heard everything there is to hear.

If anything, this is further evidence of why print journalism (on paper or online) is not going away. It doesn’t matter who BROKE the story first. It matters where I FOUND the story first.

I can turn on the radio and maybe hear about the Big 12 or maybe hear about the Royals or maybe hear about the NBA finals.

I can go to KansasCity.com, choose the topic I want and find about it RIGHT now.

What I don’t understand is why 610 and 810 are not counter-programming each other better. I tuned in to 810 yesterday to find out what was going on just as they decided to go the cooking segment. I switched over to 610 (as I’m sure a lot of people did)but they missed a golden opportunity to capture those listeners because Nick (dramatic pause) Wright was talking about the Washington Nationals.

  • GEG Says:

K-State will no longer get to kick Texas’ ass every year. Sad.

  • Icky Says:

I’m a fan of Petro and 810 — and I was shocked that he let 610 run circles around the flagship on one of the biggest college sports stories in a generation. Utterly embarrassing for 810.

  • Cliffy Says:

How will KK top yesterday’s performance? It was truly Oscar-worthy. Can’t wait to hear what he comes up with today.

I’d rather listen to Petro talk about baseball than anything involving Fescoe.

Never fear Tiger faithful. Mizzou will be fine.

It should be good. Maybe a drinking game should be established whereas you have to take a shot every time KK says “my sources”. Then again, you’ll be hammered by 2:20

  • Gavin Says:

Cliffy, I have been waiting for this all day. This should be awe-inspiring. And you’re right: Mizzou will be fine.

What do we KNOW to be true at 2:22 pm on Thursday.

    1. Nebraska Board of Regents announced they have NOT yet received an invite to join the Big 10 but they will discuss the possibility tomorrow.
    2. Missouri Board of Curators have NOT received an invite to join the Big 10 but did discuss all the scenarios today.
    3. Colorado has been invited and has joined the Pac 10.

That is all we know at this exact moment. Everything else is simply speculation and misinformation.

Steve says after listening to a half hour you pretty much have heard everything.

While a few days ago i was sick of all this Big 12 disbanding talk now its relevant. Here is what I’ve heard new and hear is what i wan to hear but no one has said.

I heard today that Texas might actually be a better fit for the Big Ten and they after romancing them.

What I don’t get is all the gloom and doom about KU. Someone…obviously more intelligent then me. Explain why KU can’t become Notre Dame and just be an independent who make a lot of money? Just as Notre Dame has an independent football contract why can’t the recent NCAA basketball champions negotiate an independent contract? Why do they have to be part of a conference? Please explain. Obviously it has worked for years for Notre Dame.

  • Gavin Says:

Rick, the reason KU can’t be an Indy is the same reason Notre Dame realized a long time ago that THEY can’t be an indy in anything but football. There aren’t enough teams who would be willing to play the kind of team KU would (ideally) be without a league affiliation. And even if KU could play an indy basketball schedule, they’d still need a league to play softball, tennis, etc. I don’t think KU would be able to persuade a league “Hey, let us play football with you and all our women’s sports, but let us keep our biggest cash cow for ourselves.” Even if a league would do like the Big East did with Notre Dame and allow that sort of provisional membership with the hope they’d eventually join as a full member, KU would still have a hard time scheduling during the time everyone else is playing in their league.

  • Gavin Says:

Also, KU now leads the country in league championships for basketball. If they played as an independent, they’d surely lose that to Kentucky within the next five years. No way KU allows that to happen voluntarily.

  • rick Says:

long before these amatuers were on the story.
I will be putting up constant updates throughout
    the day as events unfold.
I will be out til about 3pm today but will
be back with my sources and my evaluations of
the breaking news as it happens and as I
hear from my people throughout the area.
Look for this: The Big 10 felt burned when they
last offered ND an invitation. They will only
offer an invitation to those shools who apply
or tell them they would accept an offer if
given it. Thats the problem right now.
BREAKING: mY sources in columbia sent me ifo
that there are some curators/officials within
the university of missouri that are not soo keen
on moving to the big 10. While everyone..including myself have expressed what
a great deal it would be…appartently some
people in columbia and jefferson city are
having serious doubts. KC officials are now
lobbying against the mov e for financial reasons.
The heads of the sports commissions from kc
and st. louis have made mention of hte ecommomic
    impact this move has.
Also…some people in Jefferson City are also
reluctant to make this move hastily without
    examining all the details.
It is also being rumored that some within the
athletic department believe that this move is
not so smart from their vantage point.
But the really big news is that MU and their
people are now qctively scouting for expansion
of the stadium area. For those of you MU
fans you kmnonw the school was previously
faced with a massive alumnoi prote3st when they
considered seating in the “hill”. If they
move…they want to increase seating and the
    hill would be gone…very interesting!
Also…one major big 10 school is against
adding mu…AS HARD AS IT IS TO BELIEVE…THAT
IS _________________…ONE THE SMALLER BUT MORE

    FOLKS…i SAID THIS IN A PREVIOUS POST…
THAT THIS IS ALL FUN TO DISCUSS AND
TALK ABOUT. BUT ALL 3 SCHOOLS..KU/KSTATE AND
    MU WILL SURVIVE.
ALL 3 SCHOOLS WILL CONTINUE TO DO WHAT THEY
DO…this is all about the mighty dollar…
    nothing more.
KU is a fine institution but they failed to
heed my opinions nd now they face some tough
    times.
Had the figured out the guy they might hav
e avoided these very rough waters.
All schools will be fine..they will continue
to be good schools…regardless of what
    happens….
And i trulyh hope that KU and its fans have
learned that being humble is a very classy
    trait.
    Thanks..i will return.

Nick Wright always makes the listener feel they are wasting their time listening to him because apparently all the important stuff happens at some point deeper into his show.

Turn on Nick’s show at 2:15…hear Nick say: “You will want to be listening at 2:35 for my opinion on this Big 12 mess.”

Turn on Nick’s show at 3:24…hear Nick say: “Big news out of Arrowhead today, find out exactly what I’m talking about at 3:50.”

Turn on Nick’s show at 4:19…hear Nick say: “Some of you may have heard KU could be looking for a conference home after all this re-alignment business shakes out. Well, you’ll want to tune in at 4:40 to hear why I think KU will be ok after the dust settles.”

    What’d I miss?
