OTC: Is Charlie Weis Todd Haley’s Replacement In Waiting?

greg

“Weis’ reputation is that he is one of the meanest ogres in the history of sports.”
Kevin Kietzman, on the Chiefs’ new offensive coordinator, 810 AM
GH: Well, all I have to say is that is sure is a good thing that KK prides himself in not being a name caller and never dealing in innuendo, rumor or sensationalistic journalism.

“Todd Haley better watch his back because this may be a coach-in-waiting for the Chiefs.”
Bob Fescoe, speculating on Charlie Weis as the Chiefs new offensive coordinator, 610 AM
GH: Is Weis a guy who is looking to get back into the head coach’s office – preferably Haley’s office? Read on.

“Romeo Crennel might not be looking to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs but Charlie Weis might be.”
Steven St. John, 810 AM

“That’s like playing with a bomb. I would hope for the Chiefs sake that Scot Pioli is not that Machiavellian. ”
Kent Babb, on having an assistant like Weis on staff ready to replace head coach Todd Haley, 810 AM
GH: Is it all that wrong to have a substitute head coach on the staff? The players all have understudies ready to replace them in a moment’s notice, why not the same pressure on the head coach? I don’t have a problem with it. We’ve had plenty of bombs on the Chiefs’ bench the past 10 years, what’s one more?

“I think both of these Patriot guys (Weis and Romeo Crennel) are going to wind up here (with the Chiefs). I think that’s a sign of a bigger problem. These Chiefs are kind of doing the Patriots B-Team over here. That kind of makes me feel uncomfortable. I’m beginning to have a problem with the Patriots-zation of the Chiefs – because it’s top to bottom. They have to have some original ideas. They have to do this their way not the Patriot way.”
Kent Babb, 810 AM
GH: We have watched the Royals seemingly follow the Atlanta Braves book of baseball since Dayton Moore took the reins from Allard Baird (who I believe was following the “Always Save” brand of baseball). Moore’s efforts at duplication have been disastrous. I am with Babb on this one. Take what you learned and make it your own. The Chiefs’ attempt to piece back together that which no longer exists is like Tiger Woods trying to repair his marriage – it will never be as good as the original.

Or … maybe the Patriots are an excellent model of a top-flight NFL franchise, one whose operations provide a guideline on how to do it right. This makes it a bad thing to attempt to replicate?

I find it interesting that yakkers who probably have never met Charlie Weis or Romeo Crennel — much less covered the teams for which they coached — are suggesting one or the other is scheming to supplant Haley. Maybe both, unsuccessful as head coaches, may enjoy the relative freedom from the spotlight of coordinators’ roles. The NFL is rife with assistants who took their shot at being head coach, but found a staff position was much more enjoyable.

Weis and Crennel would be a significant staff upgrade for the Chiefs; both have proven to be quality NFL assistants. If Chiefs’ fans believe that its a bad thing, simply because both have been head coaches, it’s probably more reflection on their increasing disillusionment and paranoia than any reflection on those coaches.

right…weiss did such a great job at notre dame.
Everyone needs to understand that it was
bill who made the patriots great..and a lot of
    luck with tom brady.
We thought pioli was the answer and he night
be but until clark (trust fund baby) forks out
the money this team isnt going anywhere.
As far as haley..he’s a real dufus on tv.
He comes across as dumb as otis the town
    drunk on andy of mayberry.
Maybe these guys have it right because the
afc west has three really bad teams. Maybe
they see the team de eloping into a contender
but it takes time and in kc the fans have
no patience…except rick who waits with
anticipation for the new baseball cards to
    come out every year.
It doesnt get any worse for sports fans in
kc…2 huge losing teams both going nowhere.
If the coaches don’t have the players then the
    coaches look bad.
How come noone has brought up fat boy’s
demise at notre dame. He was a complete disaster
there and he could be a disaster here.

And if you want a good time look for Jojo’s wife’s number on any bathroom stall and if you are on the other side you can find Jojo at the park known for gay solicitation.

  • rick Says:

Though it has nothing to do with his current thoughts. I hate to say this but I agree some what with Jojo’s past comments. Why all the NEGATIVITY?

Instead of celebrating the possibility of gaining a top notch coach local media is already talking about how he may be supplanting the current coach. Just CRAZY! It’s fair to look at Charlie’s past failures. It’s totally unfair to imply he’s here to take another man’s job.

Loved the Always Save line and I also think Greg has a good point about why not have a potential successor on the staff.. Every player does. Fear is a great motivator.

The Patriots way. What is almost every successful business book about? A person or company that was successful and here is how they think you should do it. So would Kent Babb think it better if we follow the Lions way or we try to copy some of the success of the Patriots?

The Tiger Woods analogy is not a good one. This would be more accurate. If Tiger remarries and he takes with him the positive things and the good parts of his previous marriage and applies them to his new marriage. Scott has left the Patriots. I assume he didn’t agree with Bill B. on EVERYTHING. He is now starting over with a new team(new marriage). Hopefully he is applying the good things he learned from a successful role model (Patriots) to the Chiefs.

Sadly Tiger didn’t take examples from good marriages into his own. He took the example of how his father treated his mom. His parents were separated and his dad cheated on his mom.
