OTC: Gill’s Black To Make Mizzou Blue?
“I think (Gill’s hire and the improved football facilities at Kansas) makes Kansas the most attractive school to recruit to in the (Big 12) North.”
Nick Wright, who believes Turner Gill’s black face will be a huge aid to him in recruiting black athletes and their moms to Kansas, 610 AM
GH: Does Turner Gill get the Kansas job if he is white? Let’s say Eric Crouch had been the coach at Buffalo and went 20-30 there, winning one MAC title – does Lew Perkins even call him for an interview? Is black the new white?
“It’s easier to have that bond, that father/son relationship, with someone who looks like you. People say, ‘How can you say that?’ It’s the absolute, unequivocal fact.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM
GH: So will Gill’s KU teams begin to resemble an NBA roster? Are the only whites at KU going to be in the stands? If Wright’s logic is to be believed, white kids will look elsewhere for a white head coach. Gill is going to need more than his blackness to lure quality recruits to Kansas. He is going to need what every white coach has needed since before Rockne – quality wins…and of course hot coeds.
“Five years from now, Kansas fans are not going to be concerned with (Gill’s) attitude. They are going to be concerned with his wins and losses.”
Brad Porter, 610 AM
“(Turner Gill) has got a really, really great personality. …Pinkel has a lot of work to do (when it comes to recruiting). I think Turner Gill is going to come in here and do very well recruiting. I’m not saying anything negative about Pinkel; but he just doesn’t have that (Gill personality). He’s just not comfortable. I’ve seen him many times come into our building (at Bishop Miege High) and he’s just not comfortable. You need a little of that used-car salesman to get these kids.”
Tim Grunhard, head football coach at Bishop Miege, 810 AM
“Listen, if he called me I’d talk to him.”
Tim Grunhard, when asked if he would consider being part of Turner Gill’s coaching staff at Kansas, 810 AM
GH: Grunhard had a chance to interview with Mark Mangino and it appears he’d listen to Gill if he called. If I were Gill, I’d give Grunny a call. The not-so-big guy knows how to size up a lineman and I’ll bet he can recruit with anybody in any high school anywhere.
“I wanted Skip Holtz to get the (Kansas) job but I have no problem with Turner Gill. I like him better than Harbaugh. He beat us in my last game at Arrowhead and I just can’t forgive the guy for that.”
Tim Grunhard, 810 AM
“Sometimes you just got to sit down and calm down. You’ve got to realize you are Kansas football.”
Dennis Dodd, writer for cbssportsline.com, on the rumors that Harbaugh had taken the KU job, 810 AM
GH: Kansas football was ranked in the top 10 for most of 2007 and won the Orange Bowl in January 2008. They are building a swank football complex that will be as posh as Nebraska’s. It ain’t like KU is Baylor. If Gill fails, it won’t because Kansas isn’t wearing big-boy shoes.
“(Gill) is a big thing they were looking for. Someone who can relate to the players and make it enjoyable to play this game as it should be.”
Todd Reesing, Rock Chalk Talk
GH: Reesing was recruited by Mangino and started at quarterback for him for four years. I think he should take a year off after he graduates this December and write about his experiences playing for Mangino. If he doesn’t, you know one of his teammates eventually will.
“Mark Mangino has got one heckuva lawyer or the KU athletic department has more money than they know what to do with.”
Jack Harry, after it was reported that Mangino received a $3-million lump-sum buyout for resigning earlier this month, KSHB TV 41
“Mixed.”
Tim Grunhard, when asked what the reaction was from the Notre Dame faithful on the news that Brian Kelly is their new head football coach, 810 AM
GH: Expectations. They shape much of what we perceive as success or failure. If Kansas hires Brian Kelly, it is an unequivocal touch-‘em-all home-run hire. When ND lands the hot Cincinnati coach, visions of Moeller High’s Gerry Faust dance in the Fighting Irish alums heads.
“Turner Gill has left this place much better than when he found it and for that, I will forever be grateful. I think he will do great things at Kansas. Lew Perkins is a tremendous AD, a good friend and a mentor. They have great facilities and the like.”
Warde Manuel, Buffalo News
GH: How would you like to be the AD at Buffalo? When somebody steals your head coach – you thank them! My favorite quote from Manuel was; “I don’t think I’ll get hung up on as much this time,” as he starts his search for a new football coach.
“I’m going to be the last guy who said Tiger Woods did anything wrong.”
Kevin Kietzman, who had just directed his audience to LA Times columnist Bill Plaschke’s column in the LA Times that not-so-gently suggests Tiger is guilty of using HGH, 810 AM
GH: KK uses this plausible deniability ploy often. He would never say Tiger is guilty of a drug scandal but he’ll damn sure point you to someone who will.
“In all due respect to Mike Alden, he’s not going to comment on this (Big 10 exodus) right now because he’s too chicken to do it.”
Kevin Kietzman, after Jack Harry challenged KK to call Alden to find out his take on the Big 10 talk, 810 AM
GH: In all due respect, KK owes Alden an apology. If for nothing else than prefacing his calling Alden a chicken with the all-due-respect “opposite.” An opposite is a tired cliché that people use to mask what they really mean. Present company excepted.
“(The Big 12) believes as long as they have A&M, Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska they have all the money they need. They don’t care about the other teams.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
“Why do you want Missouri in the Big 10? Oh, come on! You would love to see them go to the Big 10!”
Jack Harry, after listening to Kietzman rail for days on how Mizzou has been disrespected by the Big 12, 810 AM
“There’s not a lot you can do once it starts to gain momentum.”
Dan Beebe, when asked what the Big 12 would do to try to persuade Missouri to stay if they decided to bolt to the Big 10, ESPN
GH: I heard Beebe’s comments aired on Kietzman’s show and marveled at the commish’s cluelessness. One of the reasons Beebe gave for Mizzou to stay is “their rivalries with Texas and Texas Tech.” With this guy calling the shots in the Big 12, it’s a wonder we’re not back to the Big 6.
“A lot of people are asking, ‘Where are the naysayers who said this was going to be a bad hire?’ ”
Steve St. John, on Frank Martin’s continued success with the 9-1 and ranked Kansas State basketball program, 810 AM
GH: I was one who thought Martin was retained simply to keep Beasley happy. But it looks like Frank “The Glare” Martin can coach as well.
“I think Xavier was a more impressive win than UNLV. Xavier has much more talent than Vegas although I like Vegas as a team. (K-State) absolutely destroyed Xavier in that game! Kansas State has beaten more good teams than anybody in the league has.”
Mike DeCoursey, college basketball writer, 810 AM
“Those of us who have been writing about John Wall understand what we’ve been presented with – a revolutionary talent. This is a talent we haven’t seen before. John Wall is the most physically gifted point guard to ever play the game of basketball. There’s never been anybody quite like him.”
Mike DeCoursey, college basketball writer, who went on to compare the Kentucky freshman to Bob Dylan and The Beatles, 810 AM
GH: I have heard from some unhappy Kansas fans who are upset that Wall is getting more pub than their superstar freshman, Xavier Henry. My New Year’s wish is an April meeting between KU and UK in Indy.
“He should be our best perimeter defender period. I think it obviously makes our team better.”
Bill Self, on the return of Brady Morningstar to the Jayhawks lineup, KMBC Channel 9
GH: How much better can Kansas get? KU plays a poor Michigan team this Saturday but Texas finally gets tested when they take on North Carolina (Sat.) and Michigan State (Tues.). DVR both of them now.
“In a shocking overreaction to a harmless comment from a fan, North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams instructed police officers to forcibly remove a fan from the Tar Heels’ game against Presbyterian on Saturday. Dan Wiederer, the college basketball reporter for The Fayetteville Observer, explains that with North Carolina forward Deon Thompson on the free throw line, a fan yelled, ‘Hey Deon, don’t miss it!’ When he heard that, Williams told staff member John Dubis he wanted the fan removed, and Dubis sent two law enforcement officers to remove the fan (a third officer came over to assist the first two). And with that, the fan was dragged out of the arena.”
Michael David Smith, fanstop.com
GH: Man, I miss Roy. Read on.
“I don’t think anyone should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let’s don’t make it a bigger thing than it is.”
Roy Williams, explaining why he had the Tarheel fan thrown out of the Dean Dome, fanstop.com
GH: Here’s a link to Roy showing the world he remains in a reality that exists only in the fantasy world of big-time college coaching.
“An unbelievable ego that is totally unchecked now.”
Roger Twibell, on Williams getting the fan booted, 610 AM
“With the booing (at Arrowhead), I guess maybe the Chiefs need to hire Roy Williams. He’ll end all of that!”
Mick Shaffer, 610 AM
“Today I decided to wear this ruff-hewn shirt.”
Danny Clinkscale, who was in the midst of discussing sports coats and wardrobe choices at the start of Kietzman’s Tuesday Between The Lines show, 810 AM
GH: I believe the last time I heard or read the phrase “ruff-hewn” used was in the Penthouse Letters section.

Great column! Where to start…
Wright is a racist, or at least guilty of making a racist comment. Reverse the colors in his comment. Is that O.K?
Frank Martin was hired to keep Beasley and Walker. He also had an impressive coaching pedigree, assisting Huggins for 4 years. He’s a coach and a recruiter. Lots of people need to apologize for their denigration of the Martin hire. Only Greg Hall earns kudos for doing so.
Roy Williams is a dick. I hope a couple of Duke fans make his life hell when the Tar Heels play the Blue Devils in Chapel Hill. If Frank Martin tried to run a fan for jeering a player, there’d be 1000 other KState fans sticking up for the fan. Carolina fans are spineless dicks too (Wait a minute, do dicks have spines? Aren’t ALL dicks spineless?)…
December 17th, 2009 at 12:55 am
The same Nick Wright that had KU beating Michigan State and Memphis “just rolling” Missouri in last years sweet sixteen? We know the agenda, Nick, but I doubt any coach in the country would rather recruit to Lawrence, Kansas over Lincoln, Nebraska…
Kevin Kietzman picking up the phone and calling anyone not connected to Kansas State athletics?
Nice try, Jack…
Missouri’s rivalries with Texas and Texas Tech???
Where’s that Big 10 phone number again?
December 17th, 2009 at 5:57 am
Bob Dillon? (Dylan)
Tim Blowhard has an IQ of about 23. The guy can barely put together a complete sentence. Boal probably has to keep a towel nearby to mop the spit off of his shirt after sitting across the table from him. Yes, KU should hire him, Greg. All they need after the Mangino fiasco is to hire a moron with an affinity for running his hand up waitress’ skirts.
Add my name to the list of Frank Martin doubters. The guy can obviously coach.
Nick Wright’s comments are embarrassing. If all you have to be is black in order to recruit wouldn’t John Blake have been a smash hit at Oklahoma? Wouldn’t Tyrone Willingham already have a couple of national championships at Notre Dame? Sheesh.
___
GH: Thanks for the Dylan fix, Cliffy.

Grunny thinks Pinkel is too stiff to recruit, huh? Guess guys like Jeremy Maclin and Denario Alexander stumbled into Columbia on the back of a haywagon and decided to stay. If Gill can recruit half as well as Pinkel, Kansas will be a force in the North (especially if Pinkel and Mizzou head east to the Big 10).
December 17th, 2009 at 7:57 am
Grunhard continues to be a blithering idiot. In reality, the head coach doesn’t recruit a hell of alot. It’s the assistants that do most or all of the legwork. Andy Hill is MU’s ace in Kansas City and most of western Missouri. The people that Pinkel nails is the parents. His integrity comes through in meetings with the parents and they feel very secure in sending their sons to play for him. They know that even if their kid is tragically injured and can’t play, Pinkel will honor their scholly for 4 years. Ask the Riggs family.
December 17th, 2009 at 8:28 am
Grunhard…too many hits to the head and too much
sex on the top of his bar.
Let me refresh grunnys memory…
Macklin…Daniels…Coffman..took a diver and
made him most accurate kicker in ncaa history..
brown/izzy…hey grunny wrong again. I think last
year 5 nfl players came from mu….
Dario Alexander (1st round choice)…weatherspoon..2 star recruits from texas who are headed to nfl on sundays.
Gabbert/gabbert jr./franklin…have you seen
rivals.com rankings? just got 4 star offensive
lineman from st. louis area….now in the running
for one of the top running backs in the nation.
Missouri will be a very good footbal program
for years to come…maybe never a top tier
program but with the talent they have they
are building a consistent winner.
KK wrong again…if missour leaves they take
with them 2 top 30 markets. A major setback
for big 11. And they know it. Who replaces
mu…tcu?
Kansas city takes a beating because they
probably wouldn’t hold any more games in kc
or st. louis (championship games).
And the idiot who said it’s easier to bond
with someone who looks like you…can someone
now expalin..stoops/brown/saban/pellini/
hello mr .wright/wrong.
Gill is the answer to ku’s racial problems.
MY niece goes there and said that there are
serious racial division problems on the teams.
Its a story under the surface…ask perkins about
the real reason he hired gill.
as always: mu41 ku 39

Pt, human ones are, which is a good thing. The bitches already bust our balls, so it’s just one less bone we have to worry about them breaking when we come home gassed.
December 17th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Pinkel recruited better than Mangino ever did…
December 17th, 2009 at 10:42 am
speaking of black and white, Tiger Woods needs your help, found this today http://www.atom.com/fun_games/tiger_woods_defense/
December 17th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Dan Beebe is an idiot. IQ tests would back this up. It is embarrassing that he runs the Big 12 and I think my beagle is a bit brighter than he is.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Nick got a little wrapped up in the race aspect of the hire. Sure, a handful of black families may want their kid to play for a black coach, but if that’s all it takes, why was Ron Prince run out of town after just a few seasons? Shouldn’t Snyder have taken over a team full of 4 and 5 star athletes?
Regarding Frank Martin, he’s done an excellent job so far at K-State. But since he’s a disciple of Bob Thuggins, I’m guessing it’s just a matter of time before the scandals and sanctions start rolling in.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:30 am
Every parents dream, having your kid recruited by a “used car salesman”. Nice one Grunny.
Since your Sunday Ball prospects aren’t very good if you play at KU as a parent I think I’d be a little more interested in what the school is gonna do to make sure my son doesn’t wind up being a used car salesman after 4 years there. I’d be a little more impressed with Turner Gill if he used the term “student athletes” once in a while.
To quote The Carpenters, “We’ve Only Just Begun” with Tiger. Best thing for him to do is hire a third party private investigator to dig up as much dirt as possible, as quickly as possible and get this over with. With as much bent grass seed as he was sowing you know there’s a baby mamma just waiting for the right money deal. Given his musculature there is a good chance he took some type of performance enhancing drug. Whether it was illegal or not who knows. That shoe is still waiting to drop. Not unusual for some type of steroid to be prescribed as part of a rehab program to speed and enhance recovery.
Dear Penthouse: I’m a sidekick to the number one sports talk host in a medium sized Midwestern City. One afternoon, after our show was over, Kevin, not his real name, asked me over to his place for a drink. After we arrived, Kevin, not his real name, slipped into something more comfortable and I couldn’t help but notice the growing bulge in his in his ruff hewn slacks. For a moment I wondered what it would feel like to have his throbbing manhood shoved inside my virgin asshole………
December 17th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Grunny didn’t say Pinkel couldn’t recruit, when he said he had “work to do in that area” he was referring to Pinkel’s personality. Meaning he’s not as friendly and personable “stiff” compaired to Gill who maybe more charming.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
grunny may not be very eloquent on the air, but everything in his past suggests he would be one hell of a recruiter.
it takes a coach (and assistants) to realize what motivates a recruit. the more you get it and the more you have to offer, the better chances you’ll have at getting them. Mangino got this early, but he never used the Orange Bowl to get better guys.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Blowhard would be able to recruit a certain type of athlete. Namely, the real stupid ones. You know … the ones who are impressed by used car salesmen. And besides, he would ultimately do or say something that would embarrass the university. The guy’s a loose cannon. I sure wouldn’t want to be associated with him.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
ManDShag- very funny until the last line. I could of lived without that picture. Speaking of pictures, sounds like its time to put Roy’s picture back over the urinal.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Jojo has a niece??? Obviously Raid does not work.
December 17th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
19 years folks, and it is over. 19 fkn years every Chiefs game has been broadcast, and now it is over. it is a sad day, and no one is saying a fkn word??
The next step is fan attendance dropping so low, that poor porr hlark cunt will have to move the team to LA so he can just break even. He will say he is sorry, but business is business.
Dont forget, I told you so, the warning are here, I dont know what else to do, it is out of my hands.
it is a sad day, like a death of a friend, and no one cares : (
December 17th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Roy Williams LMFAO….that is classic. We all know that if you put up with that shit from Presbyterian than next thing you know Wake Forest and NC.State will be yelling MISS IT at Tar Heel games. That goofy bastard looks like he is about 75 years old. He looks older than Dean Smith.
December 17th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Jason Whitlock will have a 36″ waist, Kevin Kietzman will find some humility and integrity, Karen Kornacki will be in Maxim and Tony BO-TAY-YO will have sex with a woman that he didn’t pay before the Chiefs leave Kansas City.
December 17th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
If all it takes to recruit are good facilities and a black head coach, shouldn’t Mizzou be the best place to recruit to basketball wise? So Nick should predict Mizzou will be out recruiting Kansas the next decade.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Wow, golf clap to the peanut gallery for contributing some of the dumbest reader comments we’ve seen here yet.
1) Let Missouri go. Take care. Bye bye.
2) Roy Williams did more damage to his reputation by kicking that fan out than he will ever know. I’d be embarrassed if I were a UNC fan.
3) Thank you Greg for a column with no Chiefs coverage. You are a merciful, thoughtful man.
4) Anybody else just about nauseated by Jack Harry anymore? Talk about jumping the shark. He is the Inside Edition of KC Sports tv anchors.
5) Speaking of merciful, a blackout was just what this town needed. Shame on anyone who spends their hard earned money out at Arrowhead this Sunday.

NOTES FROM CALIFORNIA:
December 18th, 2009 at 7:48 am
NOTES FROM CALIFORNIA:
up early..headed to go fishing.
1. In california everything is beautiful.
2. I n california you realize what a gross looking city we live in.
3. In california they have real talk radio
stations with real sports people. People who
played the game and know what its like to
play sports. Not a bunch of old guys like
Jack Harry (the guys a dinosaur)…Frank
Boal (this guy is way out of his league)
…KK (just bad)…and the rest of the talking
heads in kc. But in la..its so much more
fun to listen to them talk…they actually are
intelligent out here.
4. Sports. they take their sports seriously
but with so muc h else to do…they are not
as rabid or negative about it. IN kc all people
talk about is negative…in ca. its well our
team is doing bad..hey lets go to the beach.
5. People out here don’t just sit around eating
…they actually are doing and playing outside.
It’s a different attitude. You can’t walk anywhere in kc without seeing an obese overweight person who looks really bad. IN l.a.
the people look better…they are active and
even the ones in their 30/s and 40’s look
incredible.
Now..i want to thank all my readers and followers of my comments. It appearsthat most
of you enjoy reading my comments and I am probably the most quoted and reffered reader on here.
Thanks..happy holidays
December 18th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Wow jojo, when you said you were going to the beach in LA, I thought that was one of your regular typos and you were going to see a Bitch in Louisiana. So when are you gonna visit your mom?
December 18th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Nice one, dimebag.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Come on folks!!! This is just like when he went to Mexico. It was Mexico Missouri. Now he’s in California Missouri. Greyhounds go there. What a joke.
December 18th, 2009 at 11:20 am
In response to the jo-nut-
1-Yes raving forest fires, unemployment, earthquakes and traffic jams are beautiful this time of year. Besides u r there which makes their ugly racist quota go up a notch.
2-Being in California makes me realize that we have a great value system and we’re not part of the liberal bias of the coasts.
3-What would you know about listening?
4-U r correct. Dude lets go catch a wave. The attitude you described explains why LA has no football team.
5-With the high rate of cosmetic surgery (do you know 1 out 0f 10 die during gastric surgery)steroid, HGH, and other fake drug induced looks this is correct. My hope is Jojo stays out there but if not I believe he will come back with collagen enhanced lips. Which will make it better as HE SUCKS
December 18th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Hey JoJo…thanks for the info. Most of us have just read about this stuff in books or maybe saw some of those “moving pictures” but to hear a live witness actually see it…WOW! Please share more. Do they have cars? Do they have more than 1 tv in the house? What about phones? This is awesome. Let us know if the world is flat or not too.
December 18th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
MrOlathe, no way jojo knows if the world is round. He went to Mizzou, right? I mean, dude thinks that sports fans in California aren’t negative like we are here and doesn’t consider that it might be because the Lakers, Dodgers and Angels are all really good. It’s easy to ignore the Clippers when you have all the rest to root for. Here in KC, all our professional teams are the Clippers. Given that he can’t perform that simple analysis (or recognize himself as one of those many negative sports fans he rails against), how would he be able to understand anything more in-depth than “the Earth is flat but ’sort of bumpy’ in the more mountainous regions?”
December 18th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
“or recognize himself as one of those many negative sports fans he rails against” A truer statement couldn’t be made and I think its juts one of the many signs that he is insane.
