OTC: Grunny Likes Mangino But No Longer Trusts Him
“I like Mark Mangino. But I don’t know if I can trust him anymore.”
Tim Grunhard, 810 AM
GH: Grunhard spoke candidly on his Grunny & Pudgy Show Wednesday night and he offered insight into why Kansas University will most likely announce the resignation of their head football coach, Mark Mangino, sometime Thursday. Even Mangino’s friends believe he is no longer fit for the revered title of “Coach.”
“I have never had a problem sending one of my (Bishop Miege) kids down to Kansas to play for Mark Mangino. But after hearing what I’ve heard now, I don’t think I could recommend one of my kids to play for Mark Mangino.”
Tim Grunhard, the head football coach at Bishop Miege High, 810 AM
GH: This is why Mangino is toast in Lawrence – and possibly in D1 football. Recruiting is everything when you are trying to build and maintain a competitive football program. When a high school coach in your backyard calls himself your friend and still can’t recommend one of his student athletes consider your program – your effectiveness as a coach is lost.
“I think they are going to be hard pressed to find a coach who comes in and does a better job than Mark Mangino has done since 2002. I get the sense he won’t be back – but I do think it’ll be tough to find a better replacement.”
Todd McShay, college football analyst, ESPN.com
“Who is Kansas gonna get (to replace Mangino)? First tell me who is the best alternative? Be careful what you wish for Kansas fans.”
Dennis Dodd, of cbssports.com, 810 AM
“The name that’s being thrown out there (to replace Mangino) on the message boards is (former NU quarterback) Turner Gill.”
Steven St. John, 810 AM
GH: Gill is a nice guy but he’s not a big-time head coach. He would still be at Nebraska if he was Big 12 material.
“Listen to me Kansas City, Skip Holtz! Skip Holtz is your next coach at Kansas. Lew Perkins hired him at Connecticut and he loves him.”
Tim Grunhard, 810 AM
GH: Skip “Son of Lou” Holtz is 45 years old and currently the head coach at East Carolina where his Pirates lead the Conference USA East Division with a 5-1 record. Skip turned down Syracuse last December when the Orange came calling. Does Grunny know what he’s talking about? I think it makes some sense but I’m not sure Little Lou can get the job done here in Big 12 country. It will be interesting to watch Lew make his first major hire at Kansas.
“I never really sensed any anger or tension between coach and some players.”
Kerry Meier, KU’s senior wide out, KUSports.com
GH: I feel sorry for kids like Meier. His senior season has been hijacked by a coaching change that could have waited until the off season – except for Lew Perkins’ poorly played players-only meeting. Perkins’ decision was made about Mangino before he called that meeting and excluded his head football coach from the list of invitees.
“Lew Perkins is very smart. He might be the smartest person in any room he walks into to. He’s not going to do anything frivolously.”
Dennis Dodd, 810 AM
GH: Keep in mind that when Lew walked into any room inhabited by Dodd, there were probably a lot of sportswriters there competing for that dubious title.
“This (Kansas) season went south faster than Sammy Sosa went pale.”
Tom Keegan, columnist, Lawrence Journal World
“I’ve got nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Mangino. He’s been a great guy to me. He’s been a great guy to everyone I’ve ever been around. In my four years there he was nothing but great. …If you do what you’re supposed to do (as a player), he’s the best guy in the world. I really believe that. He’s been nothing but great to me. And everybody I still keep in contact I know feels the same way I do. … He’s a great coach.”
Nick Reid, former KU linebacker, 810 AM
GH: Nate Bukaty and SSJ interviewed the former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday morning. Reid made some of the strongest statements yet in defense of Mangino and his coaching style at Kansas.
“My man I wouldna have gone to ku if I knew Mangino was a dick, and as disrespectful as he was. …Talking down to us, talking about our personal lives, throwing where we come from n our faces and making us feel emotionally is wrong. …Another thing that dick has a problem with is thinking he is untouchable. He shoves ppl in the face as thought he wants to fight you. …I love ku would have loved to finish my college career there but I refuse to play for someone as disrespectful as him.”
Jocques Crawford, former KU running back, thebiglead.com
GH: Crawford’s career at Kansas wasn’t nearly as successful as Reid’s. Apparently neither was his relationship with Mangino.
“I’ve been telling you for two years how big an A-hole Mark Mangino is. I’ve taken a lot of heat from Kansas fans. I think the man is a complete and total ass! An arrogant ass! …They have no choice – Mark Mangino has to go.”
Cowboy Cory Anderson, 610 AM
GH: Cowboy needs to come clean on just why he has such a hard on for Mangino. Was there a particular incident with Mangino that left Cowboy so scarred? Was it a culmination of incidents? Did Cowboy once moonlight as a parking attendant on the KU campus?
“I know it’s a situation they want to handle as soon as possible.”
Kerry Meier, KUSports.com
GH: Expect closure today. Somewhere Al Bohl weeps.
“It’s unfortunate obviously, but guys are always looking for an edge. All the way up to the illegal stuff if they think they can get away with it.”
Jayice Pearson, on Dwayne Bowe’s four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy, 810 AM
GH: Bowe is either guilty of taking steroids to enhance his play or allowing himself to get so out of shape he took an illegal shortcut to drop 20 pounds. Either way the guy continues to exhibit his lack of commitment to his profession. Trade him today. We do not need players this foolish in the Chiefs huddle.
“I really like this guy (Matt Cassel). I really think he’s got a chance to be a really great player in the league.”
Rich Gannon, 810 AM
GH: Cassel will need some help just to achieve being a mediocre player in this league. The draft cannot get here soon enough.
“We’re in the beginning part of the process.”
Todd Haley, 610 AM
GH: Unfortunately for the Chiefs’ ticket sellers, the fans are at the end of their evaluation process for 2009. An invasion of Steelers fans is about to overtake the once formidable confines of Arrowhead.
“I’m thinking about 30,000 Steelers fans. I think there will be more Steelers fans than Chiefs fans.”
Steven St. John, on the Steelers visit to Arrowhead this Sunday, 810 AM

Funny listening to Chris and Cowboy attack Mango the last couple of days. I remember early in the season when they were touting Mango as one of the top 10 or so coaches in college football, saying if he had the resources of a Florida how great he would be. How much he had done with little ole Kansas and what not. And now this? Funny how the Home of the Jayhawks changes its tune.
November 19th, 2009 at 6:45 am
All of this because he lost a couple of games. Damn.
Maybe all the hatred in Kansas could be filtered into coming up with new laws to curtail the sale of material used to make meth, change the laws so that the death penalty could be used more often in case of 1st degree murder . . . .
. . . . nah, let’s just add some more twine to our biggest tourist attraction.
November 19th, 2009 at 7:53 am
I love, L-O-V-E, LOVE the fact that Jocques Crawford is now being viewed as the guy with the insight on Mark Mangino by the sports-talk world. This is the guy that got kicked off the team for being in a fight with a team member that led to the team member suffering a severe head injury, isn’t it? Or am I “misremembering” something in the same fashion as Andy Pettite? And now he is giving interviews standing astride the metaphorical (and admittedly girthy) corpse of the guy that removed him. There is no way anyone who quoted Crawford is looking for an unbiased story.
It’s too bad, but I think Mangino is done. I think I’d prefer he stays, but his recruiting will get hammered if he hangs around. No way he can survive this.
November 19th, 2009 at 7:58 am
REmember, Kansas fans, Lew Perkins killed football at Wichita State.
November 19th, 2009 at 8:04 am
KU is sinking fast. Not just its football program but the university as a whole.
This perkins guy has shoved a lot of crap into
alumnis face. His hiring of bill self was not that risky. He got lucky with self because self
is the best bb coach in the nation now.
Perkins is a slimball. He’s all about the money.
He thinks he can pay off everyone to get what
he wants. Mangino may be overweight but he has]
been a good coach and made this pathetic
program good again.
KU…watch out. You’re starting to fall into the
same trap as MU did years ago. This guy is
going to end up screwing you. If mangion gets
fired I guarantee you he’ll be talking about
the crap this perkins guy has done. Its been
covered up because of money and jobs.
We faced this at MU and cleaned house. This
perkings guy is a first class con man and I
can see the university having serious problems.
I always like mangino as a coach. Now that he’s
gone I look for MU to kick the shit out of
KU for the next 5 years.
November 19th, 2009 at 8:09 am
hey grunny dumsh*t..too many hits to the head
have clouded your thinking.
ever hear of bobby knight? Was horrible to his
players…even in public..but he did get raves
from the parents.
Grunny…don’t believe all htis crap…its all
about not winning games. If mark wins
10 games this year..all is forgiven.
Lew perkings is a scumbag.
November 19th, 2009 at 8:11 am
JoJo,
You never get tired of those credibility hits do you? Perkins didn’t hire Bill Self. Self was on board before Perkins got to Lawrence. Given your obvious lack of knowledge about the situation, you’ll pardon me for not immediately accepting your “analysis” of what is happening to KU.
November 19th, 2009 at 8:51 am
KU please hire Dennis Franchione.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Mangino is so getting the shaft. I still think there is a back-story that no one can find. Given the uber-liberal bias in Lawrence and KU I can’t believe they aren’t giving the guy a chance to rehab. A little Jimmy Swaggart style mea culpa and this guy is GOLDEN.
Matt Cassel is useless as a starter in the NFL. Even with the talent he has the Chiefs will need two or three years to get him the full compliment of talent he needs. Let’s just call him the Spentaur…as in spent our money on this jagoff.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Smartman,
He’d actually have to MAKE the mea culpa before he could have a chance for any kind of “therapeutic cure” like anger management, and I don’t see Mangino as the mistake-admitting kind. And it won’t matter even if he does. If Perkins wants him gone, he’s gone. There is just no way he can recruit with all of this hanging over his head and Perkins knows that.
If Perkins had any desire to keep Mangino, this would not have publicly broken and certainly not the way it did. You’ve heard more about this story than you did about the football/basketball fights and there are police reports and witness recounts of the fights. But KU managed to clamp down on that story and maintain some level of control over the story. If Perkins wanted this shut up, it would have been.
And liberal bias has nothing to do with it. Keep your politics out of the sports section unless tehre is a direct connection, m’kay?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Do the sports writers and radio hosts in this town even care about Zack Greinke?
The day that kid leaves the Royals they’ll all be whining like little babies, and we’ll look back to when he won the Cy Young and they all preferred to talk about a lameduck coach about to be a footnote and an under-achieving WR who got suspended.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Would it be fair to say that KU’s Football Operations have been distracted this week going into Austin (OUCH)….. OK give me real time ODDS …Mangino Coaches in Austin
YES Even Money?
November 19th, 2009 at 9:55 am
What you Gavinabout, Willis?
November 19th, 2009 at 10:05 am
The fucking terrorists that masterminded the 9/11 attacks are getting more justice than Mangino. I agree with others who think there is more to the story.
Gavin: Under any circumstances KU has not handled this with any kind of dignity. It oould have all been kept silent and Mangino could have been dismissed. No questions, no comments just let the media speculate. Hell, they could have said he was resigning for health reasons. I’ve talked to kids that have played for him and yeah, he’s a prick and a bully and uses some old school forms of motivation. Most coaches do. That’s why they coach and don’t run Fortune 500 companies. In short they are ruining the guys life.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:11 am
I want to be at Zach’s news conference when he announces he is leaving. I believe Mike Tyson will be used to interprete what he is saying.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Tim Grunhard is an idiot. He went from telling Soren Petro that he thought Mangino wouldn’t be fired at all on Monday to saying he has a source that told him Mangino was out during Kietzman’s show.
He must not be very locked in if he never had a problem sending players to KU in the past, but now all of a sudden it would be a problem. Does he not talk to his former players after they leave? Wouldn’t they have told him some of this stuff?
The guys is a blowhard idiot who doesn’t have a clue about anything he just spouts his opinion. Somehow that holds some water because he played for the Chiefs. The guy is a putz.
November 19th, 2009 at 10:56 am
ManDshagger-
I’m not defendingt he way KU has handled this situation. I agree that MM is getting screwed hard and iwthout so much as a kiss. However, I can’t think of a time Mangino ever admitted a mistake, let alone apologized for one, and that includes getting the program on probation. All I am saying is that IF there is a scenario where Mangino could come back, that scenario would have to include Mangino apologizing, agreeing to some “therapy” and a promise to so better in the future. I don’t think that even that could save him at this point, but those things would be a minimum. But I agree with you that he is being treated shabbily, especially in light of what he has done for the school.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:14 am
Circle me, Gavin. Also, I don’t care what your source card says, “iwthout” isn’t even a word.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Mangino’s been great for KU football the last 7 years. He brought excitment back. But the future can be as bright or brighter at Kansas, I have no doubt.
Lew may swing and miss, but he WILL take a big swing at bringing in a coach to keep KU competitive in the Big 12 in the future.
November 19th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Geez John Buckshot, why don’t you just ask Gavin if you can touch his dong with your dong? The way you stalk him around here is like high school.
Gavin: Do you like John Buckshot? ___Yes ___ No
Can John Buckshot touch your penis? ___Yes ___ No

“Matt Cassel is useless as a starter in the NFL. Even with the talent he has the Chiefs will need two or three years to get him the full compliment of talent he needs. Let’s just call him the Spentaur…as in spent our money on this jagoff.” -smartman (redundent)
Matt Cassel proved last year with the Pats that he can be a starter in the NFL. To evaluate him with this sorry bunch of losers is erroneous at best. Hell, Peyton Manning wouldn’t win many more games than Cassel has here. And I’d prefer to call Cassel the “Sacrificial Lamb” at this point, and the money the Chiefs are paying him is hazard pay so far- the guy takes a beating week after week, and I still can’t believe he’s standing upright this far into the season.
November 19th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
GH, how do you know Gill or Holtz are not big time Big 12 coaches? How big time do you need to be to coach for the North?
November 19th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Paul, with each week Cassel is starting to look more and more like Rob Johnson, Scott Mitchell and Elvis Gerbac,
Pioli gave him $60 Mil without ever know what he can do now that he doesn’t have Randy Moss to fall back on.
So far Pioli sent 60 mil down the drain…
November 19th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I like and respect coach Mangino, he should stay and keep on keeping on. Fuck all you band wagon riding, KU hating idiots.
HOW ABOUT TALK ABOUT GETTING RID OF THE DIASTER AT ARROWHEAD?
Mangino is A-OK……
and for once DM actually has a point, HOW DARE YOU IGNORE ZAC IN HIS MOMENT OF GLORY?
PS
I do know why,,MU AND KSU suck so bad at everything, they are unable to not bash KU at any point they can. KU ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSS!!! YEAH BABY ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK GO KU!!
MANGINO IS A – OK !!
MY COACH IS PAT….errr…. I mean phat.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Greg, were you just watching College Football Live on ESPN? Screwed I tell ya.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Greg,
I just saw Mangino and the Jayhawks on ESPN. Is this thing really getting national traction? Mangino has got to be hosed, doesn’t he? Why are they stringing this out like this?
November 19th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Saw a picture of The Sugar Bowl Mascot and The Orange Bowl Mascot the other day. Sorry, that was Mangino and The Orange Bowl Mascot.
The Chiefs were leading The Biggest Loser Football Challenge, losing over 340lbs. before the season opened. Looks like KU is going to surpass them by losing 500lbs. before the season is over.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Uncle Dick, better not quit your day yob.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Uncle Dick don’t listen to the hecklers. You are better then that Grandma Craig has had at his place and been on America’s Got Talent.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
And whats a yob anyway?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Too late, Pauly, I retired. Made a fortune selling dictionaries.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I’ve gotten calls from friends in Chicago, Philly, Atlanta, NY, Miami and Seattle asking what the deal is with Mangino. The story is getting some coverage on their local tv and radio + ESPN. They are all asking the same question. WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? They can’t believe this is over a little shoving-choking-verbal abuse.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
John,
I don’t know any more than the next guy with a keyboard whether or not T. Gill or Little Lou can be successful coaches in the B12 North. I’m just basing my opinion (and that’s all it is) on what I have observed from their previous work. If I was hiring a coach, I’d pass on both.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Greg,
What basis do you have to say Mangino is gone today? That’s outrageous unless you cite a source, or two.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
I think it will turn out that Greg is wrong. Mangino will loss his job early next week Wednesday the latest. If not then, nothing will happen until the end of the season.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Clearly, Lew wants him out.His ability to recruit has been destroyed by the way it has been handled, by design there is no other answer. One rumor has it that the fight between the FB & BB teams cost Self Harrison Barnes have clue if there is any truth to that, but if there is the fact that Mangino kind of blow off holding his team to an equal degree of blame would explain alot of this, especially IF barnes was coming here that is a big reason he’s now going to UNC. Grunny does know at least one very big KU money person who I’m sure has Lew’s personal phone number. Maybe they talked after Monday’s show. The coach I would take serious look / run after is Tommy Tuberville. He was a D – Cood. at Texas A&M (10 win season ‘94), he wins(60+ %), would open Florida some , name coach to help put the bad stuff behind us. Money people would love the imagine he brings to the program. Is it far fetched to say he would be the 2nd best coach in the north right off the bat? Internet that I saw only mentioned Virginia and Central Florida. Can have a good chance to win the North consistenly and do to the South what KSU did to OU. Like was said earlier it will be very interesting to see who Lew will(or already has ) hire(d) as the next Coach. Because he is too smart not know exactly what he is doing and not either have the guy or a list of 2 to 3 names. The new coach while come quick or we are scewed.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Paul: The Pats system and circumstances, everybody stepped up when Tom Brady went down, had a lot of impact on Cassel’s performance. He is not starter material in the NFL, wasn’t starter material in college. He does not impress me as having leadership qualities. He seems very immature and out of control when he does make a good play, kinda like a high school QB would. Pioli went all in with Cassel and we all bought the bluff. Matt Cassel isn’t taking the Chiefs or any other team to a Superbowl unless he’s paying for the tickets.
November 19th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
kcshocks,
Why is it “outrageous” to think Mangino will be gone as soon as today? I have some outrageous thoughts but that is far from being one of them.
November 19th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Grunny can’t trust Mangino? Haaaaaaaaah. At least Mangino’s tags on his cars are registered legitimately and his driver’s license lists his actual address. Grunny is an authority on morality? Yeah, he learned his High School coaching skills on the payroll of the North End Mafia.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:21 am
Smartman, what has happened to you? Did you sell your title and now someone different is posting under your name? Have aliens taken over your body? I use to read your posts and think “I know why he has that name, great comment.” Now, I’m like huh? Cassell has been incredible under the circumstances. My guess is his quarterback rating would bear that out. I think he has been tentative sometimes but not sure if that’s him or the coach holding him back. He’s had one bad game and obviously injuries. How many INT’s does he have? I sure would rather have him RIGHT NOW then Jay Cutler. Smartman come see me as I have something for you so you can carry your name properly. If not we may have to change your name as % formerly known as Smartman.
