Hearne: You Won’t Find This in Local Media…Not Yet

Having blown out star Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt

We don’t hear or read much about the player who likely would have vied with quarterback Patrick Mahomes for team MVP.

Not unless you have a penchant for Internet searches.

Which is not to say that the everybody else in the NFL is playing ostrich.

Far from it.

One highly possible destination for the fall-from-grace Chiefs star is at the Cleveland Browns. Which makes sense for a number of reasons.

For starters, Browns general manager John Dorsey is the one responsible for signing Hunt to the Chiefs when he was running the show here. He’s also the dude who green lighted woman beater Tyreek Hill who local media kiss ups and sports fans have now given a pass for misdeeds that dwarf Hunt’s.

Not that I’m alone in embracing this possibility (likelihood?).

Take a column in December 30th News-Herald of Ohio.

“Browns signing Kareem Hunt in off season risky but makes sense.”

“The Browns’ offseason has begun,” it begins. “For the first time in what seems like forever, the search for a franchise quarterback won’t be the trending topic in Cleveland. So let the hype machine begin in 2019. The Browns will almost certainly be the nation’s NFL darlings when it comes to expectations after a 7-8-1 season following a 26-24 loss at Baltimore on Dec. 30… On offense, adding depth at wide receiver would help, and especially at running back”

For somewhat obvious reasons, “The Browns could use Hunt’s help — eventually. Signing the free agent would be at a cost that has little to do with dollars.”

“The Browns signing Hunt make sense for a lot of reasons — if they believe he’s worthy of a second chance.

• Browns general manager John Dorsey drafted Hunt when Dorsey was running the front office at Kansas City, so there’s familiarity.

• Keeping Hunt close to his family and support group while he attempts to restructure his life would obviously be ideal.

• Signing Hunt needs to be a decision with a long-term vision. The 2019 season could be a wash since the running back faces a likely suspension. Securing a spot for him on the active roster when eligible then easing him into action behind Chubb and Johnson would be a logical course of action.”

We’ll find out down the road what the local sports media has to say about the matter once Hunt remands at  another team, regardless of which.

Which could be telling.

    – highly possible? No, not in Kerouac’s opinion. Odds are against it. On the plus side, home is where the heart (as well GM Dorsey) is. On the down, is also the place family (and said’s influence) resides.

While Dorsey delivereth ‘red flag’ type players the one hand (p***y peters, k ‘Silent h’ unt, tyweak hill & kelce the klown KC, and as well Gordon and Mayfield in CLEV), he also cuts or sees others rid themselves of his drafted handiwork – peters here KC, and Gordon in CLEV, common denominator those who continue be ‘****-ups’ as ’twere.

Talent be damned, Mayfield in CLEV (another ‘hey, look at me’ type) may go the way Johnny Manziel… would not surprise me. Latter best hope he only goes another NFL team and is not exiled all the way up to Canada.

Recall Marty Schottenheimer late in his career getting desperate, and bringing in guys like Rison, McGlockton and Simmons, along with his own problem child D. Thomas… that certainly worked out well, no?

Today’s players are, in far too many cases, just not worth the trouble. Too few ‘pros’ – too many ‘showmen’. Give me 53 Bart Starr’s and I’ll give you a team that wins three consecutive World Championships.

      Ah, but K….

He’s the dude who drafted Kareem AND looked past far were incidents of violence to bring in Tyreek. My money iOS on him going for it – right or wrong.

I don’t think having him anywhere near his family would be ideal.

  3. Kerouac says:

They don’t refer to them as ‘The Mistake By The Lake’ for no reason… the fact CLEV has been an embarrassment for 54 NFL years (a longer dry spell than even the swiss chiefs), does not suggest they have made the right choice re: hiring GM’s, coaches or players, for a long time.

Browns Owner Haslam has itchy fingers: he’s a hands-on guy (translation: a micro-manager) now in search of his sixth head coach and on his fifth GM since he arrived 2012 (think Charles Finley circa 1960’s, KC.) Just a couple of months ago ‘someone’ fired HC Jackson and O-CO (former KC guy) Haley. Say someone because there are folks remain unconvinced Dorsey had or ‘has’ final say on matters hiring, personnel, etc., despite reports to the contrary.

GM Dorsey, recently asked what he’s looking for in a head coach, stated: “I would like to see a man of character.” Would he want Hunt seeing as he didn’t want Gordon, the latter a more talented player than the former even? Would either qualify as ‘a man of character’ , were he an candidate? The plea “he is a player and not a coach candidate” misses the point. What head coach, GM or Owner ‘of character’, would want a player without character?

You don’t build a ‘team’ with players like Hunt, Peters, Hill, Kelce, Gordon, Mayfield, Manziel, et al. You roster overflowing ‘I’ndividuals, and get two teams CLEV and KC have not sniffed NFL relevancy (spelled Championship) in over a century, combined.

Why Kerouac said the OAK (soon Las Vegas) Raiders seems a more likely landing spot for Hunt (the odds are better Marcus Peters ends up there too, than Hunt in CLEV, my opine… we shall see.)
