Hearne: Star Drops Ball on Kareem Hunt USA Today Scoop

Nobody in the journalism racket likes getting scooped….

Especially when it’s by an out-of-town news competitor and takes place in their own back yard.

Such was the case recently when USA Today unleashed a major scoop outlining the fact that exiled Chiefs bad boy Kareem Hunt‘s behavior apple didn’t fall far from the family tree.

Hey, KCTV may not be a local news juggernaut, but at least the station picked the story up, crediting the scoop to USA Today:

“Family of former Kansas City Chiefs star Kareem Hunt has history of criminal behavior,” the headline reads.

“Not only is Kareem Hunt’s football career in jeopardy, but so is his reputation, even in a part of Ohio where he grew up being celebrated for his exploits on the field and where his father and other family members are known for something else — their extensive criminal records,” USA Today reports.

“Hunt’s father, also named Kareem Hunt, has been arrested at least 35 times in northeast Ohio and multiple times on charges of domestic violence, according to records obtained by USA TODAY. Most of the felony convictions were for drug-related offenses. He was sentenced to a combined nine years in prison on nine felony convictions, but it’s unclear how much time he spent in jail for dozens of misdemeanor charges.”

There’s more…

Earlier this month Kareem Hunt, 47 was due in court “for nonpayment of court costs,” USA Today continues. “:The court appearance stems from a 2012 conviction for disorderly conduct and violating a protecting order, which prohibits an abuser from harassing a victim of domestic violence.

“Yet until recently, the junior Kareem Hunt, 23, has avoided serious trouble and was on his way to another 1,000-yard rushing season for the surging Chiefs after he led the NFL in rushing yards as a rookie in 2017.

“I knew it was too good to be true,’’ Ava Hunt, Kareem Hunt’s great aunt, told USA TODAY.  “’I knew it, I knew it.’ In April, Ava Hunt’s son, Rashan Hunt, was sentenced to 23 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.”

There’s more…

“He’s a miracle,’’ said Lorenzo Hunt, Kareem Hunt’s cousin, who was sentenced in 2004 to seven years in prison for aggravated robbery and a felony firearm offense. He added that several family members squandered their own athletic potential. “For Kareem to make it, it’s not just validation for him, it’s validation for all of us who tried our hardest and failed or succumbed to bad situations and poverty.’’

Kevin Riggins, who family members and records say is Kareem Hunt’s uncle, is serving a 10-year prison sentence for drug-trafficking and other drug-related offenses. A cousin, Gregory E. Hunt, is serving a 12-year prison sentence for drug- and gun-related offenses.

“Kareem Hunt’s older brother, Clarence Riggins, was sentenced to more than two years in prison after a 2014 conviction for criminal trespass, according to court records. Hunt’s mother was arrested in 2014 on charges of cocaine possession and pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, court records show. Hunt’s stepfather, Deltrin Kimbro, was sentenced in 2004 to eight years in prison for drug trafficking and related offenses, according to court records.

“Four more cousins and another uncle have pleaded guilty to felony offenses, most related to drugs, according to court records.”

The bottom line:

In terms of guilt by association, the Chiefs’  running back’s actions are hardly surprising.

And in terms of getting majorly scooped by out of town journalists, it’s understandable that the Star would have egg on its face and be embarrassed where Hunt’s grotesquely unseemly family tree is concerned.

But why take a pass on news locals would highly likely find interesting just because somebody else broke the story?

Perhaps the criminal record of Hunt’s relatives didn’t seem relevant a month after he was released from the Chiefs. Somehow Hunt was responsible for their behavior? I seem to recall a much celebrated, convicted drug-dealing felon writing for this very website. Hunt is responsible for his own ignorant, disgusting mistakes. Those have been exposed in great detail. I could give two-shits what his family did.

      Fair snuff, Big Jim…

Then again, when you are surrounded by those sort of influences, it’s not wildly surprising when you follow in those footsteps. Obviously, many people rise above influences such as Hunt’s but the fact that his aunt wasn’t the slightest bit surprised – indeed, half expected him to go down that path – seems telling.

You know, in the world of 20/20 hindsight.

As for the dearly departed Glaze – the Scribe’s family influences were relatively benign. Other than a father who had a knack for going broke and cheating on his mom, Craig had a relatively middle class lifestyle growing up

No, I get it. I have friends that had to overcome horrendous childhoods because they were surrounded by people cut from the same cloth as many of Hunt’s family. It’s a helluva disadvantage.

Honestly, I’m rooting Hunt. I hope he can leave all that garbage behind and be a better person. If he can keep his nose clean, he’ll get another shot in the NFL. Not with the Chiefs, but he’ll get a shot. Plenty of examples of people that rehabilitated their image after serious mistakes. (i.e. Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, et al) But, the list of people that went the other way is plenty long, too.

In fairness, Jim, by virtue of the fact that he’s not doing slam time or on his way there, he’s risen above his peer group…

Maybe this will be the wakeup call he’s been needing.

          Let’s hope

“Deltrin Kimbro”. What a great name.

It’s gonna be a hell of a wild New Year’s Eve at the Hunt household for all those relatives not “doing a dime” at a penitentiary near you.

Holy shit, what a wild night!!! Cocaine, mary jane, guns, criminal intent, bring the whole family and celebrate with the neighbors!! I wouldn’t even want to be a fly on the wall. A swimming pool full of blow, “Ho’s”, rap music and World Star Hip Hop on the tube for the little ones at bed time.

Plus, these are some tough SOB’s. When it hits the fan, the smell of cordite will suffuse the smell of Purple Haze, giving way to the sounds of gunfire, the wailing of sirens and the traditional, Hunt Family “Reading Of Rights” ceremony. Then, a more subdued and serene ending to the night, as the sound of handcuffs closing on the wrists of the “Oppressed” paves the way towards a happy 2019.

I’m surprised the media didn’t pick up on this story when Hunt was drafted and write a feel good story about him. Or maybe they did, and I just missed it.

This actually makes me root more for Hunt to get his life in order and get back to being successful. Anyone who can come from that type of background and make it “out” deserves some amount of respect.
