Glazer: Have This Year’s Royals Given Up?

Our Kansas City Royals are baseballs worst team!

With a record of 7-16, they’re in last place with worst record in the majors.

Worse yet, even if they went 20-10 over the next month they would only be maybe .500. And going 20-10 is highly unlikely right now.

The team can’t hit at all with a league low .210 team batting average. The Royals top hitter, Lorenzo Cain is batting just .272.

AND THAT’S OUR BEST HITTER!

Core stars like Eric Hosmer is loping along at just .225 with only one home run. Alex Gordon is batting .184, and so on.

It’s ugly.

WHY?

The answer is simple.

There’s no energy and the players are playing for their future homes and contracts, not to be in KC anymore. There’s just a general lack of interest as a group.

These were the same young excited guys in 2014, and committed players in 2015 that won it all.

Unfortunately it all started falling apart last year with a .500 team and now it’s much worse.

Guys like Hosmer, Moose, Cain and others likely just are done with the Royals. Why? They did their thing here; they got top attention, now they want to move on to part two of their baseball careers in greener pastures with national attention, TV commercials, brighter lights and maybe big city fame.

In the case of Eric Hosmer, if he can get his bat going and repeat close to last year’s numbers, -which were good not great – he maybe gets that $100 million somewhere else.

Even if KC matched it or went higher Hosmer likely just wants to move on.

He did his KC thing already.

Just as important, the Royals team future isn’t bright.

With a depleted minor league system, no new big stars and nobody to carry this current club, they can’t do it with just Danny Duffy.

Yes, the Royals will have Sal Perez and Alex Gordon moving forward. But who else that matters as position players?

Nobody else is close to having much if any star power today.

Gordon looks kinda done as a hitter with a .200 batting average over his last 500 at bats. Perez is full of energy, an outstanding catcher and solid hitter but he ain’t no Johnny Bench.

If this team is out of it by June – and that looks highly likely – will the stadium still fill up?

No not much.

In fact by late summer look for the ugly numbers we had in the 1990’s and most of the 2000’s before the 2014 playoffs. You know, 8,000 to 10,,000 during the week and maybe 18,000 to 22,000 on weekends unless it’s a low dough, buck hotdog game.

Who will you come to see?

The World Series years can’t carry a bad team very far anymore.

People will find other things to do with their money. Plus a team scoring only one or two runs a game is damn boring.

General manager Dayton Moore should have moved on last year while the getting was good for him. Because it’s hard to find new stars that can make you a playoff winner these days. It took KC 30 years to get back into the post season last time.

Hey, I give the Royals credit for 2014/15 that was wonderful.

It just doesn’t last forever.

So we have those memories, while guys like Hosmer move on to New York or LA and he becomes perhaps Carlos Beltran part two. Who knows?

Good for him.

This core team gave us a fun ride but now it’s over, way over.

  1. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

CG, it has been a horrible start to the season. The starting pitching was spectacular for the first 10 or 12 games, but the offense was in a total funk. During the losing streak, it was ALL bad. maybe they can get going with the win last night.

    Some good news:
They are only 15% of the way through the 2017 season. Plenty of time to get hot.
They are only 5.5 games back. Given the losing streak, this is a miracle.
Hell, Toronto & Texas are further back in their divisions than the Royals are in the Central. With Cleveland leading the division with a record of 3 games over .500, the Royals are FAR from out of it.

Personally, I think Ned has screwed around with the starting line-up a little too much and hasn’t found any chemistry.

Let’s see how they respond after breaking that awful losing streak.

Way over? Way too early for that!

  2. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Alex Gordon has a nice glove, but is terribly average otherwise. His salary is a blight on the Royals payroll. Hosmer, he for sure wants to be hitting better, especially in a contract year. He’d love to put up big numbers and raise his value on the market. Moose is a fat tub, and should be a DH. That way he can continue to destroy local buffets and hack away at the plate. Cain’s best days may be behind him due to injuries. Salvie will be the rock behind the plate and in the clubhouse for a long time. But CG is right, the Royals need ALOT more than Salvie. The Royals’ painfully short run is over.

    • Yes…the party may be over…but what a party it was.
2 world series….seeing great play by some of the best players at the time.
Winning the series…the 800K downtown (or as admin says 80K downtown)..
it was a glorious time and we lived it up to the max.
I still see world champion t shirtsin kc…..they will always be world champions…
but life changes an the team changed and we all move on.
      but as they say…
      ROYALS FOREVER.
I’ve been to 10 games this year…and it’s not really over til October.
      Miracles do happen

Are you serious? They would only be MAYBE 500? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt Glaze. In the time that it took you to type that second paragraph, you probably didn’t have the time to do the math in your head (7+20 and 16+10) I’ll give you another go at it. You’ve had plenty of time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qztuEucrNBc

  4. Kerouac says:

    “it’s over, way over.”

    – it never even began for real; cue fraudroyal ‘Taps’ played in concert b-flat

    :'(

    • CG says:

Yes K another bad loss last night 6-0…its getting darker for Royals…the trade talk will start in a few weeks in KC continues to lose.

      • Kerouac says:

That stench isn’t limburger cheese… be the fraudroyals – Kerouac tried to tell you CG, and the rest all you alls…

        :’-(

    • David Nelson says:

K we are all aware you believe sports has been a huge fraud ever since you took your date to prom in a horse and buggy. Since you think it is so worthless and a complete sham, why do you keep paying attention?

PS – I think there is a 16% chance the Royals turn it around and get over .500

      • Kerouac says:

        “K”

yes, what is it now faithful susbcriber?

        “we are all aware you”

        – all 16, Sybil? You got all the family there with ya? Your brother Darrell, and your other 14 brothers Darrell?

“believe sports has been a huge fraud”

        – can’t get anythin past you… or any you Darrell’s… huh.

“ever since you took your date to prom in a horse and buggy.”

        – well, the ’70 Challenger R/T was getting washed & waxed, and seeing as you offered up your ride, and brought Darrell & all of your siblings along to help you steer, needed the extra seating.

“Since you think it is so worthless and a complete sham, why do you keep paying attention?”

Q: the more apropos rejoinder: why do YOU?

A: Kerouac, Lays Potato Chip Blogdom… no one cannot ‘not’ read Him, even once.

        “PS”

        – yes?

        “– I think”

        – therefore, you are not a liberal (still not the sharpest knife in the drawer, however… youngest the Darrell clan.

“there is a 16% chance the Royals turn it around and get over .500”

        – that’s higher than the chance Trump was given, but remember: just because you aren’t an liberal, does not mean you know what you’re talking about (or can get to where it is you’re trying to go with your post) without a GPS…Darrell- er, Da-vid.

        😉

        • David Nelson says:

Love Bob Newhart. Seriously K you need to put yourself on the couch next to Mr. Carlin and ask yourself why you pay attention to sports when you have such utter disdain for them.

          • Kerouac says:

            “Love Bob Newhart.”

            – someone must, suppose…

            “Seriously K”

            – seriously Da-vid, what is it now?

“you need to put yourself on the couch next to Mr. Carlin”

            – a) have no couch, and b) George is currently on his ‘Scattered to the Wind’ tour, unavailable as such….

“why you pay attention to sports when you have such utter disdain for them.”

            – same reason you follow Kerouac while feigning disdain… habit.

Next: Da-vid reminisces, explaining how was it ‘Growing up Nelson’, progeny Ozzie & Harriet.

            🙂

  5. Phaedrus says:

I was in Half Price Books (119th & I-35) the other day and saw a copy of King of Sting on the clearance rack for $2.00. Just a PSA in case anyone is looking for a copy. Maybe Glaze will even sign it for you.

    • CG says:

Good call Phaedrus…yes all used books are cheap, even on amazon.com you can buy any major best selling book, like KING OF STING used for a couple bucks careful the shipping charge is high…new ones are still 24.95 and paperback 14.95…so used is best…sure I’ll sign them, always do…

  6. E.H. says:

Both the Royals and their 2014 World Series opponents S.F. Giants are in last place. Shoot, last year the Giants were on fire, they were the best team in baseball until the All-Star break..then they fell apart just like the Royals and here we are whining and complaining.

I hope things don’t get worse this month of May. Losing 10 out of the last 11 is bad enough.

  7. Libertarian says:

It was 4-zip when I quit watching last night.

They certainly are a big let-down from 2 seasons ago.

  8. have you given up glazer?.
Your place is nothing but low end comics/male strippers/and local open mic winners.
Will you step it up or will you fade away like the royals.
No more hyping those comics. I never heard of any of the shows they were on.
And I have to drive to a dangerous neighborhood to get a couple laughs when with amazon i get 24/7 comedy by the big names.
Hope you make it….it’s a crowded biz out there dude!

    • Therealworld says:

Harley, have you paid up yet? If not, why not? Are you a welch???

    • CG says:

HARLEY you don’t know their shows cause you are OLD…COLIN KANE THIS WEEK IS A THEATER ACT, STAR OF WEDDING RINGER W/ KEVIN HART, NEW MOVIE VENICE W/BRUCE WILLIS ok…end of story.

      • CG says:

Oh Harley so Lengends is dangerous? Uh like when, where why…you are like 70 and a live in old man…what do you know…stay home watch tv I get it…its ok.

        • At least it’s still in the store. I know many authors who’s remaining books are loaded in their garage!

        • Glaze…you’re older than me. You were in prison….I never was. The legends will fall to the brick and mortar armageddon except for a few stores.
Spoke with officials from that area…the dealerships there
are dying…many of the smaller stores are dying…no residential building around there….the tracks got 2 or 3 days a year….the casino ain’t happening….and with 5000
channel we get all the comedy we want
not some gay naked men who you adore or some midget wrestlers.
No we don’t stay at home.

  9. CG says:

I think its time to leave the Royals alone for a bit and see how it goes…it took time for them to fall apart and it will take time for them to get back together if they can…so a daily update doesn’t help. They have players that can fire up the team if they get rolling, and enough talent to make some noise…remains to be seen.

    • e.h. says:

You’re right, plus it’s early in the season. I doubt KC is going to be in the doldrums all year..they certainly seem weak in the offensive department but it may not last. If we still can’t hit by the end of May there will be changes that’s for sure. Yost can’t keep guys hitting in the .100’s in the lineup all season long!

  10. Snappietom says:

The Royals have a cantankerous, stubborn old fart for a manager. Ned Yost needs to go. He says he does not care what happens in spring training. Then why go through the process? He stays with players way too long when their in a slump. Thinks he a F__King know it all. He needs to create some competition between the players.

FYI: Giving Alex Gordon that new contract was worse than the Royals trading Lou Pinella for Lindy McDaniel, the softball pitcher!
