Glazer: Chiefs & Chopper a Team of ‘Destiny’

gggThe Chiefs had a six game stretch of games against playoff teams or close…

Beating Denver on the Bronco’s home court was the first. Yesterday’s road game against one of NFL’s best offensive teams, Atlanta and Matt Ryan, was the second. Our boys were a big underdog, by as many as 6 points. However Chiefs QB Alex Smith, had one of his better games this season, throwing 25 passes and missing only 4! Damn.

Smith threw for 270 yards and a big 29-28 win.

The story of the game was Eric Berry. The Chiefs safety who is having his biggest year ever had two interceptions for scores – an INT off Ryan for six, the other, a game winner, was a 2 point return off Ryan when he attempted a two point conversion on Atlanta’s last score.

Berry has gone the field three times this season already.

The Chiefs defense was nothing like it had been against the Broncos. Justin Houston was used somewhat and did record a sack, but missed some of the game on the sideline. Dee Ford was back but had no huge impact.

The Chiefs couldn’t stop the run and Ryan was cutting the Chiefs up in the first half with Julio Jones who left the game late with an injury.

il_340x270-937868578_fomxAs they’ve done all season, the Chiefs got the turnovers they needed to win the game.

Travis Kelce was Smith’s favorite target with eight catches and 140 yards. Speedster Tyreek Hill seemed more of a decoy this time out. Still he had five catches for better than 50 yards and kept the Atlanta defense looking his way.

Once again our rushing game was not that great, although the Chiefs coach Andy Reid did call a fake punt that went field for a TD.

Nice.

There was much to be happy about for Chiefs fans. Two big road games with two wins. Now Chiefs are at home for three of the last four games including against Oakland Thursday night and then Denver.

While the Chiefs are likely a game away from clinching a playoff birth, beating the Raiders and Broncos at home will likely give them the division title and a bye in week one of the playoffs.

The Chiefs seem like a team of destiny this year.

However Oakland can make the same case. Both teams find ways to win in the end. With a big win over Atlanta, Smith improved quite a bit – and that’s the most important news.

Tyreek Hill – “best offensive player RIGHT NOW in the NFL” – CG, 11/28

I called you an idiot for this and you took great offense. Let’s see how the best offensive player in the NFL did yesterday…2 carries, 19 yards and 5 catches, 53 yards. No touchdowns. As I said, he’s a good player. He’ll have good days, he’ll have bad days and he’ll have mediocre days. He is not, and never will be, the “best offensive player RIGHT NOW in the NFL.”

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

      +1.

Let’s also wait for next year when NFL defensive coordinators have had an offseason to scheme for him, if necessary.

  2. The Word says:

1995: Team of destiny. Linn Elliot misses three kicks and Steve Bono throws three picks.

1997: Team of destiny. Elvis Grbac couldn’t hear the plays from his helmet speaker while Rich Gannon looks from the sideline.

2003: Team of destiny. Payton Manning and the Colts never punt. Worst defensive game in history of franchise. Maybe even the modern NFL.

So please don’t call this a team of destiny. I can see the Steelers come to Arrowhead next month and smack KC right upside their head.

    • CG says:

Agreed. Hey I’m trying to be nice…and hopeful. Believe me nobody knows bette than I do, I’ve written about the franchises poor history 90 times. K is nearly correct, this is a bad football franchise to this point…we know no big wins in years and no super bowl since the 69 season…only three teams have missed the Super Bowl that long…lets see, Jets, Lions,Chiefs and one more. Not good.

This is a fun team and it may surprise folks…playoffs and super bowl are another story…but we can dream.

    • Kerouac says:

1963: Team of destiny. The defending AFL Champions are ‘goin to, Kansas City – Kansas City here we come’ They lay a giant egg, finishing 5-7-2 after 1962’s 11-3 mark as the Texans.

1966: Team of destiny. The AFL Champions are going to Superbowl 1 where, according Head Coach Hank Stram, “well tear apart the NFL”. GB 35 KC 10

1967: Team of destiny. Defending AFL Champions dispatch the NFL Bears 66-24, then pummel another NFL powerhouse LA Rams 24-13 by halftime, before stepping back to admire their own work upon the way to a second consecutive Superbowl. They finish 9-5 and in 3rd place AFL.

1969: Team of destiny. A special one-year only playoff format – beginning of the end the days legitimate pro sports – allows the Chiefs to ‘sneak into’ post season, different previous season’s wherein they would have been home for the off-season. An injury to Raider QB Lamonica, an out of bounds catch by Otis Taylor that was called in, the odds finally succumbed inevitable: Chiefs top Oakland aft losing to them 7x in the 8 previous games, this the closest a Chiefs team ever came fulfilling some ‘destiny’, confluence events described above equating selling football soul an single shining moment, an otherwise also-ran history theirs having to suffice.

1971: Team of destiny. Last hurrah: Jan Stenerud makes 1 kick and fails 3x on others. Chiefs miss AFC Championship Game not to mention third Superbowl in 6 years. The descent begins: 45 years hence, they’re still paying the piper.

      R.I.P. 2016 swiss

      🙁
