Glazer: Scribe Vows Never Again to Bash Alex Smith

scribeNo Super Bowl had the drama of last night’s OT, come from behind monster victory by our Kansas City Chiefs

Alex Smith, I want to apologize to you sir.

THIS IS YOUR TEAM NOW, WIN LOSE OR DRAW.

Smith who has been under fire by everyone, including me, was heroic last night. He never gave up when he had to do it and drive for scores. o

This is now and for this season Smith’s team.

The Chiefs now more than ever buy into the soul of Alex Smith. Yes, he can do it. Even if they don’t win the AFC, last night was one for the books. The hardest hitting game of our time.

In Mile High, where its hard to breath, the Chiefs outlasted, out defended and finally outscored the World Champs. This win puts them into the playoffs, a loss likely would have ended their season. They refused to lose.

I was simply delighted.

Now about Tyreek Hill…

Not since Gale Sayers in 1965 – over 50 years ago – has a player scored three touchdowns, a punt return, running and receiving TD.

Hill is now arguably the most dangerous weapon in the NFL.

scribhThe Chiefs have NEVER had a weapon like Hill, NEVER.

Travis Kelce was outstanding, and what can you say about our defense.WOW.

Justin Houston, three sacks, a strip, 10 tackles – game of his life. Eric Berry made hits like a madman.

It was maybe the best Chiefs game in regular season of all time.

Now having praised this brave and refuse to lose group, the rest of the season is full of hard games.

Winning more than 10 games will be very difficult against ATLANTA, TITANS, CHARGERS,RAIDERS,BRONCOS! All are playoff teams, save there Chargers who are deadly.

Oakland is still likely to win the west, but now we can all sit back and believe in this team.

I will not bad mouth Alex anymore this season.

He earned our respect. This game got far more attention than anything the Chiefs have done in years. Including their playoff win last year. ESPN spent a ton of time morning on the game,Hill, Houston and Smith.

Now the Chiefs have something they needed, RESPECT.

From here forward the Chiefs players have full confidence in Alex and their ability to come back and will never quit. That’s all you can ask. PATS, OAKLAND, TITANS, DOLPHINS, STEELERS BEWARE.

The Kansas City Chiefs are for real.

This! This is the type of column you should be writing, CG! Over-the-top hyperbole based upon one game because you are a fan of the team. That’s fun.

We get to celebrate and enjoy an improbable win for a day or so without over-analyzing everything the Chiefs are not. For today. there is only one word necessary for those obnoxious Bronco fans. SCOREBOARD!

  2. Kerouac says:

    CAPTION THAT PIC

Competition for CG… another man and his dog 🙂

“The Chiefs have NEVER had a weapon like Hill, NEVER.”

    – not true: Noland ‘Supergnat’ Smith returned the first football he ever touched AFL for an 86 yard td in 1967… the first run he ever made was for 15 yards… the first pass he ever caught was for 42 yards. Alas, he was playing for the AFL Champ Chiefs , so never got a chance with Otis Taylor, Mike Garrett, Frank Pitts, Gloster Richardson et al in tow. Smith was also faster than Hill, a 4.19 his top recorded 40 yard dash time, and all that with an 5’6 1/2 154 lb. frame.

Too, would note Tamarick Vanover also had a td return his first ever attempt ever and Dante Hall was even more exciting than Hill, as was Mike Garrett and Abner Haynes whop were also more productive.

As for Capt’n Checkdown: that giant [Hoover vacuum sound ] is Smith. Last week he was garbage & couldn’t even beat Tampa Bay – at home – now were not worthy stand in his presence? Nod Sam Kinison: “It was light it was dark, it was light it was dark”… i.e., some folks change their opinion more often than Imelda Marcos changed shoes.
To each their own, CG… get back to me when the clock strikes midnight and the coach and his pumpkins revert to form.

K only one team is happy in Feb…the winner of the super bowl…the rest are sad…so not likely we will be those guys agreed.

    • LanceTheIntern says:

      Captain Checkdown. I like it.

You could call Denver’s loss last night “Death by 1,000 Checkdowns”.

What was your score prediction again?

      • CG says:

I predicted Denver would win in my column bu didn’t pick it..in the end being a fan I took KC and the 2 1/2 points…small, small bet..to tough a call. In real life I always try and tease good teams aginst bad ones and gain the 6 points thus my almost undefeated last few weeks….doesn’t always work but its the best way to go…

NEXT FEW WEEKS GET TOUGH IN COLLEGE NOT TOO MANY MISMATCHES, PROS GET HARDER TOO..

        • Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Speaking of college football, there is a real possibility that the Big 10 champion will NOT make the playoffs and it could very likely be a Big 10 (Ohio State) team that didn’t even win their division. Hoping it happens and the whole thing speeds up the clock to get to 8 teams.

          • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

You need AT LEAST 6 teams and really honestly need 8. Adding a couple of teams would be a huge benefit to the endlessly dysfunctional Big 12, who will once again be shut out of the playoff. The Big 12 has essentially become the old WAC conference with their air raid offenses and zero defense.

  3. Phaedrus says:

That tidbit about Tyreek Hill and Gale Sayers only applies to rookies….not all players. In other words, Hill was the first ROOKIE to do that since Sayers did it in his rookie year.

I don’t know why they didn’t go a step further. I’m guessing that Sayers returned a kickoff or punt…which would probably make Hill the first roookie EVER to catch a td pass, rush for a td, and return a free kick (or whatever those kicks after safeties are called) for a td in the same game.

Heck, let’s go one more step further. I bet Hill is the only PLAYER in history to rush for a td, catch a pass for a td, and return a kick for a td in a single game plus get arrested for beating his girlfriend while in college.

We are definitely witnessing something special.

    • Kerouac says:

“I bet Hill is the only PLAYER in history to rush for a td, catch a pass for a td, and return a kick for a td in a single game plus get arrested for beating his girlfriend while in college.”

      – Sayers did even better than that: in one game his rookie season, he ran for a td, caught passes for two more tds, returned a kick for a td & beat up 22 men, 11 on defense & 11 more on special teams vs the ‘World Champion’ Packers.

      🙂

  4. CG says:

I was listening to 610 about ‘not a fan of Hills’ due to the hitting the pregnant girlfriend…I know he plead guilty…I need to know more about it, was it violent or a push shove deal? Is it a one time thing? so on…he seems to be a nice kid, he is young maybe, we should give him a second chance huh…ARE WE ALL SO DAMN JEALOUS..now if he is OJ part two screw him, but I kinda doubt it…by the way haters I think Tyreek Hill is the real deal, best offensive player RIGHT NOW in the NFL and the best Chiefs weapon in their long history….he is for real…I’ve seen enough, speed, hands, moves and football IQ to boot, I AM A FAN..unless he is proven to be a monster…I don’t see that.

    • CG says:

PS I don’t hear much bitching about RAY LEWIS a murderer…hummmm….

      • Kerouac says:

Kerouac hasn’t chimed in re: Hill’s off the field ‘resume’ till now: if the NFL can and did suspend and now appears ‘ban’ Ray Rice for life for what he did to his girlfriend, simple assault, there but for the grace of God(dell), a lack of video evidence, his pre – NFL status at the time and sans collusion (overt or covert), goes Hill. Details otherwise unknown at least, said appears to be the case.

One would think that Rice, who at the time of his incident was a RB who averaged 4.3 yards gaining 1,110+ yards rushing in 4 of his 6 years NFL season’s by age 26, would find employment. As it stands, he’s now at age 29 SOL for a third consecutive season, NFL ownership fearing likely fallout, $pelled public perception.

Don’t hear much about Ray Lewis? That’s not necessarily a good thing. He’s been retired for awhile now but gauging fan reaction come 2018 when he becomes HOF eligible, voters will chime in. For the record, offenses lesser than homicide including PED use & gambling have resulted MLB greats an Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Pete Rose and an host of others not even sniffing Cooperstown… Kerouac’s guess is they never will either, any them.

Back 1980 former Chiefs great Jim Tyrer became eligible for the NFL Hall of Fame 5 years after his retirement. He should have been a shoe-in, not only because of being the best OT on the left-side his era but due his being maybe the best all-time, according many. 37 years on he isn’t nor will he ever likely be inducted, result what transpired his case off the field. There is an price to pay (OJ Simpson can ‘thank the rules’ that there is not a retroactive component to HOF induction, otherwise, his hall would only echo with the sound clanging cell doors.

Back to performance on the field, Hill and his (according some) imminent induction the NFL HOF aft 11 games career, time will tell. Nod second chances, somewhere in blog-land a man & ‘h’is $10K bet awaits, hoping same for he and it be accepted.

        🙂

        • CG says:

K going out a limb here. I think Tyreek Hill can’t be compared to anyone, no not Dante Hall, who I was friends with back then…Dante was a great return man, not a great receiver or running back..Hill is ‘the real deal’ or so it seems…you build an offense around that man. I have not seen anyone like that ever…if he stays close to this or improves he can become THE MAN in the NFL on offense..now if we can get him the ball…

          • Kerouac says:

“K going out a limb here.”

            – careful… when the bough breaks & man’s idols fall, down will come bluster egg face and all (see similar overhype re: swiss many seasons on end, fraudroyals, Clinton, etc.)

You’re entitled to your opinion CG, but I stand by my assessment that he is an gimmick player. Nothing wrong with that, only history suggests he’ll never become the [insert hyperbole here] you hope for.

“I have not seen anyone like that ever…”

            – Kerouac has, beyond former Chiefs mentioned earlier post(s).

Ever see Travis Williams? 58 touches, 6 tds as a rookie 1967 for the Packers. More opportunities, who can say what he might have been, least that season.

Travis ‘The Roadrunner’ Williams touched the ball 18 times as a rookie returner in 1967… and scored 4 tds; comparison, Hill has 36… for 1 td.

Williams, a 9.3-100 at 210 lbs., rushed & caught passes too, scoring 8 tds total that 1967 ‘World Championship’ season for GB; by next season, came back down to earth (or the league caught up to him as ’twere), settling into the career of ‘just another player.’

A couple years earlier 1965, the still best rookie / player opine mine, Gale Sayers, similarly had an massive impact, just on a larger scale.

Sayers rookie tds = 23: 14 rush, 6 receiving, 1 punt return & 1 ko return (he also threw a td pass). 232 touches (235 w/3 passing attempts) 14 games, 2,272 yards, 162 + yards per game average. An former Chief, Abner Haynes, was that same type of player, just a bit less talent.

Speed-wise, Hill rivals some of the faster players in memory Chiefs, but isn’t even best at that. He falls behind several, including Noland Smith & a trio lesser-remembered others even faster than Supergnat. Jimmy Hines, a 9.1 100 man, Clyde Glossen 9.2 & Grundy Harris 9.3 all played for or were in camp/pre-season with Chiefs.

Appearance wise, Hill reminds Kerouac of Mark Duper, an similar sized WR who played for MIA. Duper did not get the opportunity rookie season Hill has but year 2 and after he did, making stats KC’s guy will have to amp up his game for order even match.

Football today is not the game it was yesteryear, yet even in this day and age WR’s like Hill – who average only 9.5 yards per catch and (last check) have 117 guys ahead of them that aspect, cannot be deemed the best/greatest.

What your/others reaction to Hill is can be best described as an brief respite from that which be a Chiefs fans birthright: ‘desperation’.

Chiefs have had such a long drought since those prime days Abner Haynes, Noland Smith, Mike Garrett & Otis Taylor, later Joe Delaney & more recently Dante Hall. Result, fans overreact. This is what you’re doing CG, but that’s ok, enjoy said while it lasts.

Was a time having exciting players was routine for the Chiefs/fans. Spoiled days an talent edge ours ended advent 1970’s, the drop-off in terms offensive prowess notable to date as most other teams have surpassed the Chiefs.

Back to Hill, if we focus on what he’s done on and for his team, vs what others have done on and for theirs, Hill over-hype does not match the reality be the NFL’s stat-line:

Receptions, he’s has 45, tying him for 52nd NFL.

TD’s receiving he has 5, tying him with several others for 14th.

Kickoff returns: 13th in average, tied for 14th in yards with several other players, 0* tds whereas 5 other players have 1 or more

[* NFL lists that free kick return vs DEN as an kickoff return, an anomaly the typical kickoff. ]

Punt returns: he has the most yards but is only 2nd in average and has 0 tds, this compared to six other NFL punt returners who have a td(s).

Passing: as an aside, Hill has zero attempts, tds. History, RBs/WRs a Haynes, Mike Garrett, Otis Taylor, Warren McVea & Bert Coan are, among others, examples Chiefs players who in addition rushing, receiving & returning kicks, also threw passes ala an QB, some completed tds, epitome of a multi-purpose athlete.

Perhaps if Hill kicks some fgs, extra points and sells some popcorn the stands, he’ll change the mind doubters like Kerouac. Until/unless, Hill will be but the latest player bring a bit of spark KC’s vast wasteland terms offensive excitement.

            🙂

  5. LanceTheIntern says:

I can’t take credit for this — but I think it’s hilarious (from Deadspin):

Bob #1: What’s your job title?

Alex Smith: I’m the game manager.

    Bob #2: What’s that entail?

Alex Smith: You know, exhorting the kick returner to run back a long kick, encouraging our placekicker to make his kicks, hexing the other team’s placekicker.. um..

Bob #1: Let me just stop you there. What would you say.. you DO here?

Alex Smith: I HAVE PEOPLE SKILLS DAMMIT

  6. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

LOL at the T. Hill hyperbole. He’s not even the best offensive player in the AFC, let alone the entire NFL. He’s a dangerous return man, for sure. But an every down type of player? No, not even close. There are better running backs, and WAAAAY better WRs than Hill. Guys who have proven it over a series of years.

  7. Level Headed Guy says:

Tyreek Hill – “best offensive player RIGHT NOW in the NFL” – CG

You are an idiot. He had a nice game.

    • CG says:

I’m an idiot? Really…hummmm…. the Chiefs have had more attention for this game and this player than any game they won since THE 1970 SUPER BOWL thats right..why this kid, Tyreek Hill, he is not only good but he has ‘sex’ appeal the NFL loves it and needs it…even to day ESPN DID AN HOUR ON THE GUY…he’s clearly the real deal. I’m an idiot…guess ESPN IS and many other NFL watchers…I think he’s gonna be huge…see calling people names fake name guy isn’t nice…I don’t do that…unless attacked like you just did….CHIEFS HAVE THEIR FIRST REAL SUPER STAR IN DECADES….HE IS THE MAN….like it or not…bet he continues against Atlanta…but I’m an idiot what do I know..

      • Level Headed Guy says:

I actually agree more with what you just wrote. But when you write the Tyreek Hill is the “best offensive player RIGHT NOW in the NFL” you’re talking like an idiot. Hill is a good player. He had a good game. He is nowhere near the best offensive player in the NFL. That is idiotic…ergo, you’re an idiot.

        • CG says:

With all I have accomplished and written, often predicting what is going to happen on the highest level, I am according to you an idiot? Hmmm…and what have you ever done, no name fake person? Nothing, maybe when you look in the mirror the idiot you see is YOU.
