Glazer: Chiefs on the Warpath

screen-shot-2016-11-03-at-10-12-57-amThose damn Colts have been the Chiefs biggest nemesis the past 15 years…

They beat KC four times in the playoffs since 1995.

They’ve had the Chiefs number more than any other AFC team.

But finally a measure of revenge was taken Sunday at Indianapolis via a big 30-14 victory on the road.

Kansas City is now in a great position to make the post season, and of course, at the top the division with Denver and Oakland just 1/2 game back.

That said, it was a strange game in many ways.

We now know, for example, why QB Alex Smith hasn’t been running the ball as much. INJURY.

Alex went down twice in the game with concussion checks after each big hit. The second one took him out of the game and now he’s under watch for next week’s game, pending on NFL procedure with concussions.

Backup quarterback Nick Foles filled in for Smith and did a very nice job with touchdown passes to Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Jeremy Maclin.

Hill is more and more becoming the speed demon receiver with hands who can score anytime from anywhere.

Along with Marcus Peters on defense, the Chiefs may, for the first time in decades, have two superstars.

The Chiefs offensive weapons are now the best they’ve had since possibly the Len Dawson era.

8bd6af0bc32c52f07c1339314cd4f2eaRunning back Spencer Ware is also out with a concussion and hopefully will return next week. However, now the Chiefs will have to bring someone in as a second or third back for upcoming games just in case.

The good news is next week KC has a lower level opponent at home in Jacksonville.

Thus if Alex is shaky, they’ll likely feel good about starting Foles and letting Smith sit this one out to get totally back. He might even be available as a back up if Nick has issues.

Same thing with Ware.

This team appears good enough to win without them, or so it seems. At least against the Jags at home.

Once again the protection of NFL quarterbacks by the ref’s needs to be more consistent.

When Alex took that first big hit, there should have been a flag.

We see flags for light hits on quarterbacks after they throw a pass, surely a smack to the quarterbacks head and body on the ground is far more flagrant.

The Chiefs’ defense was once again bend don’t break.

Indy QB Andrew Luck was trying to stay away from Peters and still got sacked four times – twice by an improving Dee Ford.

The Chiefs have proven they are a team on the rise and their division is likely to provide three teams in the post season – KC, Denver and Oakland.

The Chargers fell to Denver and while still dangerous are falling behind in the post season race.

It’s still all about Tom Brady, the Pats and everyone else in the AFC, but there’s a long way to go.

Off topic but congrats to the Cubs. Honestly one thing that isn’t being said is that this series is introducing more people to baseball then any series in the last twenty years.

The ratings have gone to Jupiter. Just think if this series was Red Sox/Cubs and not the Indians.

Game 5 beat the Sunday night game against the Cowboys and the Eagles. Repeat baseball beat a Sunday night game with a 6-1 Dallas Cowboys team.

Baseball is alive and well in the United States and the Cubs are the team that helped people rekindle their love of the game.

    • Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Word, I went back and forth on who I was rooting for the entire series. In the end, I’m fine with the Cubs finally getting that monkey off their back. Fantastic series, for sure. I actually think the Cubs won despite Maddon’s in-game moves. I would have said the same thing about Francona. The players made the series, not their managers. Pretty pleased with Zobrist, too. That is one seriously classy dude!

      • The Word says:

Cubs seem like a sleeping giant.

Large market team, with a large fan base and a front office that knows what their doing. Would it surprise me if the Cubs win two more of these things in the next five years. No, not really.

“Along with Marcus Peters on defense”

    – TOAST is the worst CB in the entire NFL… his lack of cover-skills and below average foot speed a CB is evident, and would already have him playing S except for one thing… he is far too undisciplined.

And so, as KC watches yet another season – year 47 – disappear down the bottomless football crapper be the swiss hovel nee abobe, the half way point beckons…

    • Trembley says:

I’m not really sure how “Toast” is a clever nickname. I mean, I get it– you think he gets “toasted” by his opponents. But how is it clever? Can you explain it to me?

      • Kerouac says:

Who referenced it “clever”… other than you, who felt compelled read and comment on it, nod the Lays Potato Chip of Blogdom, Kerouac his presentation, created it.

TOAST gave up more big plays than any CB in the NFL in 2015, which didn’t prevent him from being labeled a ‘star’ and an ‘All Star’ at that. Much as 2015, MLB’s ‘Joke’ Pederson the Dodgers being named a ‘star’ and an ‘All Star’ despite batting .230 at the break. Why? Because he hit a few home run, analogy had a few ints. No different kcfraduroyals fans stuffing ballot box All Star voting, 2015… popularity polls do not equate excellence afield.

That the blind squirrel moment (home run as int) will always be found in more abundant number proportion pertaining number of opportunities (at bats as passes thrown at), self evident.

2016, TOAST since game 1 was already in rookie-season form, getting TOAST’ed by long passes, tds reiging down. This until recently whence opponents discovered that, bad as TOAST is, the BURNT swiss player(s) other side of the defense are even more prone to/susceptible easy pickins’.

TOAST is as the baseball pitcher who strikes out a good number of batters while likewise giving up a home run or three the same game: long passes surrendered by a CB, including one (or more) tds, strikeouts/ints analogy. Referring to TOAST’s performance ongoing as ‘star-worthy’? Now that’s ‘clever’… and hilarious.

Upshot: TOAST the epitome an mediocre player, nothing more, such hardly the stuff stardom. Only swiss fandom & media find more enjoyment fixating on window dressing in lieu the bigger picture: results… as in ‘Championship’. Case the swiss, they’ve been promising & proclaiming great seasons and great players same since… 1970; nuff said.

As the little boy who cried wolf, soon no one even listens to or gives any credence such… we’ll leave the lights on for you KC.

        🙂

        • Trembley says:

But why Toast? That’s the part I don’t get. It’s like calling a bad pitcher “Bad Arm” or something. It’s just sort of… uninspired. Aren’t nicknames supposed to be clever?

          • Kerouac says:

This your second rejoinder Kerouac’s original missive… what/who is ‘clever’, self evident.

            🙂

          • Orphan of the Road says:

Toast, referenced first to Izel Jenkins in the late 80s/early 90s, refers to being continually burned covering receivers.

            Toast as in burnt.

BTW Nick Foles won’t be able to save plays with his feet ala Alex Smith.

        • Trembley says:

Serious question, and I’m not trying to be rude, but is English your second language? That might explain the “toast” thing, as well as the rest of your post. If so, I apologize for questioning the nickname.

          • Kerouac says:

            “Serious question”

            – provided last week this very blog: ‘who is the oldest CB to ever play in a regular season game for the swiss?’ (name, year)

Answer that Trembling if not quaking narrative retort, willst Kerouac take queries yours all due seriousness; shy said, en garde, prêts, allez (we joust on.)

“and I’m not trying to be rude but”

            – yes?

            “is English your second language?”

            – in the same way the modern world is to a luddite…

“That might explain the “toast” thing, as well as the rest of your post.”

            – to each their own device…

“If so, I apologize for questioning the nickname.

            – do not despair; Cioran offered “it is not worth the bother of killing yourself, since you always kill yourself too late.” ― The Trouble with Being Born

            🙂

  3. Kerouac says:

“It’s still all about Tom Brady”

    – if you can’t beat em, wait till they (Peyton Manning) retire, huh CG. Since Peyton exited the stage retirement aft his Superbowl triumph February 2016, new england cheatriot overhype (who is 2-3 career post season vs Manning) may finally manage beat Peyton’s former team, the only in the NFL he has a losing record vs: the World Champion Denver Broncos… but don’t count on it.

His balls being under-inflated or regulation size, the fresh off suspension/convicted ‘Shady’ Brady was 0-3 vs Denver when he played vs Manning, and lost 7 times in 12 games career vs Broncos. He hasn’t beaten Denver since 2011, when Tim Tebow was the starting QB… nuff said.

As the NY Jets beating the Baltimore Colts with QB Earl Morrall (Trevor Siemian) in lieu Johnny Unitas (Manning) Superbowl III January 1969, doesn’t amount to much in terms relevance; to wit, Kerouac isn’t convinced that ‘Shady’ could beat a Broncos team QB’d by a rookie starter like Siemian… we shall see.

What we do know is this: ‘wait till next year!’, part 2017 verse 48, re: the swiss.

    🙂

  4. CG says:

Was nice to see Hearne at the new Stanfords Village West. ‘LEGENDS’ last night. We had MAGIC MIKE, MALE REVUE, Hearne brought the ladies from his work…fun times. This weekend its ‘insane’ Colin Kane…come check it out…Joyce Smith did a nice KC Star story on us Wednesday in 913 KC Star.

Chiefs will win this weekend without Alex…look out Alex could be Andy is looking at Nick to maybe take your spot soon. Be ready.
