Glazer: Stanford’s Comedy Club Returning to KCK in November

oStanford & Sons  comedy club will return to Legends’ Village West in early November…

The deal has been in the works for some time now.

Stanford’s enjoyed eight good years at Village West, however when our lease ran out in 2014 the powers that be thought they had a huge medical tenant in for the building we were in and they needed our space to complete the project. Thus we were unable to renew our lease, forcing our move to the Uptown Theater and then  Overland Park.

The project fell through at Legends and now they’ve decided they want to bring back Stanford’s to recapture the adult entertainment crowd.

Our location has been vacant since we moved out 2 1/2 years ago. So it’s under clean up and redo and we are in final stages negotiating a new lease.

348sStanford’s enjoyed being at Rosana Square these past two years. It was fun bringing back the restaurant and flower pot bread.

That said, we’re looking into a new concept for our current location in Overland Park.

One major thing we had at our Legends location was a larger, theater style comedy room.

When it was designed in 2007 it may have been the nicest comedy club theater in the nation, similar to the smaller theaters in Las Vegas that host both comedy and entertainment. We had movie theater styled seating, a large stage and a runway and lots of bells and whistles.

Stanford’s will continue the comedy lineup at Rosana through October.

Plans for our new concept are underway plans and we will announce the final details when it is fully agreed upon.

So stay tuned.

Stanford’s enters its 42nd year in Kansas City and is the nation’s oldest family owned comedy venue  other than The Comedy Store on Sunset Boulevard that’s owned by Pauly Shore‘s family.

Yes, there are a few locations like the Improv in LA that are older but no longer owned by the original people who started them.

We’re proud to be a longtime part of the Kansas City entertainment scene, starting in Westport, moving to the Legends and then Overland Park.

Tickets are on sale now for the grand reopening in November as well as our shows at Overland Park through October.

Hearne mentioned Uptown theater, we were just doing a winter holiday run there for 8 weeks and it was never a place we were planning a permenant move too. Nice spot though.

that’s a lot of moving and planning and planning and moving in such a short time. not a fan of The Legends, but if works for you, go for it. I’d rather see you guys back in midtown – guess there’s just no going back, eh. Good luck, Craig. – mt.

Mike we did try Westport a few years back in four spots…either too small, too big or couldn’t get a deal worked out…FireFly was one we liked but couldn’t work out a deal…P and L is just too late a night spot and mostly for just party time late night weekends…poor parking and other issues…we looked at Brookside too nothing available that worked…Plaza doesn’t want nightclub anythings…sadly and they have no late night traffic at all…so we have to go where we can..Legends is a nice place and that club is gorgeous so come see us soon.

      • SOCOM 91 says:

Wish you would do the Plaza…that would be awesome!! But understand the reluctance.

        • CG says:

Tried back in the early 2000’s…had a deal where Putch’s 210 was, but Carl Peterson ended up with it and made it George Bretts…Plaza was not wanting anything with a late night bar and a possible young crowd back then…yeah would have been interesting.

      • Frank says:

Hey, outlet malls need outlet comedy.

  5. chuck says:

    Best wishes sir!

    🙂

I hope you tortured your former landlord for some serious consideration.

    🙂

  6. the dude says:

So they ran you out of OP this soon, huh? Joco momos not give up enough bread to keep your yuk yuk shack afloat?

    • CG says:

Nope Johnson County folks were very nice, just a better deal forus out there for comedy. much larger club, nearly 300 seats and we have a new plan for OP. This club was much smaller only 200 seats plus…I know you really care…hah.

  7. dude…what glazo failed to realize is that joco is moving south and the
demographics are changing quicker than most ever imagined.

If it was my biz I would shut down overland park. It’s already starting
to be a huge bloodbath out there and you will soon see what realtors
are calling “brick and mortar armagedden.
I don’t know what glazo is thinking of doing with his 119 location but
the action that he needs has moved already to 135th and further south.
And the demographics again south of 135th have changed so much that
he can’t really draw from the south too much longer.
When you can’t bring in the big names you’re really handicapped because
with all the comedy on tv now…why go to a comedy shop. Sit at home
with your amazon stick and get all the comedy you want for free. Or go to youtube
like the millenials do or to any one of 100 comedy websites. some ideas
    for promotions:
    1. Hen’s night: ladies promotion. the married women in south op love
getting together to drink wine and trade stories about their affairs. Bring
a funny female who appeals to females and offer drink specials. Forget the
nude males…once you started that your club got a bad image…stick with
good clean fun. and who knows..maybe you’ll find some nice rich woman
and never have to deal with these crazy comics again!
    2. MUSLIM NIGHT: THIS would be a huge hit. But you’d have to take
the ribs off the menu that night! Everyone’s noticed the huge influx of
indian/Pakistani/middle eastern residents from 135 south. they are great
people…many with big money….and what better group to promote to than
this group who are very closely knit. I’m not sure there’s any muslim acts
on the circuit but you’d have to tone down the material to fit this market.
But seriously…they have money…they would be great customers and you could
co promote with patel foods in your center. I’m serious…they have moved into
entire subdivisioons and they are some of the nicest people you would want to meet.
    3. MIDGET WRESTLING: Did you know the American city with more dwarfs
per capita is St. Joe! Really. So you have a built in market of wrestlers to draw
from. But people have to be aware of your special promotion. Maybe Midget MMA.
Have you seen the places in joco showing UFC events…its huuugggeeeee@
    4. $1 Beer nights: Hey with entertainment budgets being strained…who would
not come to $1 beer nights. That place at 95th and Quivira packed them in…so
    could you….
    5. Hip hop night. This would be huge but the crowd won’t show till 11pm.
Charge a cover and use a securitywand.
    6. Go gay. You’d break ground in joco as really the first bar to attract this
very high income market. If you really wanted to make the big bucks you’d
see the huge numbers of these bars. You’d probably have to redo the interior
and change the music but I guess that this growing demographic offers you
thechance to really make some serious money.

if you look at comedy now there’s really no up nd coming hot
acts…or at least we haven’t seen them at glaze’s place.
Bringing in old ol comics might work but the demo he needs just
isn’t in op and it’s heading south.
for all purposes there are just too many bars in the area and you will
see some go down fairly soon. Maybe a sports bar….well you have
way too many on every corner in joco. As far as the legends…well I hope he got a great deal on the rent.
But since he was there the demos there have changed.
He might get some flow from the casino from people who want a
night out then head to the casino…..but that casinos crowd really isn’t
his potential customers. I play at Hollywood but its really not the
best place to play. Went back to argosy.
As far as marketing…free air time on radio probably is as
    dead as jazz in kc.
He’s not on the rock (according to tonys blog) and he’s really only
getting free time on 102 and the country stations.
Well unless he’s bringing in larry the cable guy this free marketing
is really a waste. I’ve never heard or seen an ad on any stations.
He needs to rebrand his name. With all the moving, people really
don’t know where you are. .

There is some action at the legends and he has sporting kc where he
should advertise but the legends is a “get it and go” retail operation like most
    of the malls are now.
I’ve seen some great great comedy at your place glaze. And even though I
give you trouble for your sports and political picks you need to continiue to
provide an alternative entertainment for those who love live comedy.
but your marketing hs to freshen up.
Good luck in your new venture. And when is Bobby Slayton coming back.
I would expect 2 free passes for this great marketing advice I gave you for free!
    Keep the faith!@
    Your friend…
    Harley

  8. glazo…youknow what op needs really bad…is a good “comfort food restaurant”
    I’m sick of bar b q/overpriced burgers/salads and healthy food like tofu/
overpriced lunch joints where they charge you 15-20 bucks for lunch….
do a single price dinner and lunch restaurant. I saw one in Colorado and it
was packed. and it was open late for all the stoners in Denver.
If you need futher info contact me at my sight.
    good luck
