Glazer: The Royals Could (Not) Go All the Way!

royalsbagsI know, I now,  it’s early…

And I heard this last year when the Royals jumped out to a 7-0 start and pretty much maintained the division lead tis season’s end. They fell out of 1st briefly just before the All-Star break, and then followed that with a hot summer surge that had them in 1st into the playoffs.

One big reason: timely hitting with the position players all hitting well.

It was the old, “If the starters all hit at a level near the top of their games, the Royals can win it all.” And they did just that, mixed with great defense, strong pitching and baseball’s best bullpen.

However we saw some trouble brewing early this year.

Yes, the Royals jumped out to a nice start, mostly behind solid pitching and defense. But their offense was far below last season when six position players were hitting out of their minds, all over .300 for long enough to matter.

This year that hasn’t happened.

The bats have been cold for almost everyone. And yes, Eric Hosmer is having an outstanding start with a .337 batting average, 32 hits and four homers – nice. Mike Moustakes is showing good power with seven home runs, but his batting average is well below .300.

The rest of the team is ice cold.

Lorenzo Cain is a huge disappointment with a batting average of just .231, only two home runs and not one double thus far. Yikes. Many considered Cain the Royals most important weapon the last two seasons along with Hosmer.

Our DH, Kendrys Morales had a big year last season to help the club win the division, but this season he’s way down with a .217 batting average and only two home runs. Alex Gordon’s even worse with a batting average of just .205 and only two home runs. The rest of team is as bad or worse. Sal Perez is just OK at .241 with four home runs.

All of which has led to being in 3rd place and 4.5 games back of the White Sox.

The Royals are 1-6 over the last two weeks. This didn’t happen last season. We can say it’s early, but if the season ended today there’d be no playoffs, not even a wild card.

All of a sudden the Royals can’t drive in runs from even 3rd base with one out.

And it’s happening far too often.

We’re losing one hitters that we pitched!

starved-royals-outfielder-finally-gives-in-to-temptationIts not time to panic, but it is time to be concerned.

Eric Hosmer can’t carry the team by himself on offense. Without good seasons from Morales, Gordon and Cain, the Royals have no chance to repeat last year’s glory.

Manager Ned Yost will have to hang in there for a few more games and hope the bats heat up. However if the Royals keep losing and fall back seven or eight games, we may have to start worrying. Ned. of course, will start with lineup changes and the team may be looking for another bat asap.

Naturally everyone will say there’s plenty of season left to go – we all know that.

Teams have cold spells for sure, but these Royals never had a big time offense.

The Royals are a team that needs all of its position players to play at a solid level to overcome the lack of having two or three monster hitters in the lineup.

We don’t have great power. What the Royals had was six guys all hitting home runs and extra bases as a group. As we all know, there has not been a 30 plus power hitter on the squad for some time.

Maybe as the weather warms up so will KC’s bats.

Right now it sure doesn’t feel very good.

And if it doesn’t change soon, all the talk will start about how hard it is to repeat for a third time. To go to three World Series in a row. It is hard. Let’s just hope we can make it back to the playoffs. It’s a long season. At least we’re healthy and the pitching’s been solid.

sorry glaze….just got back from eating…went to my stats page and then saw this.
I wanted to puke. Not because the lunch I had was pretty rough but because
you are the laughing stock AGAIN!
After less than a month…you shoot off your big mouth and predict something
after your long string of horrible calls and stories without one piece of statistical
    evidence about this team.
with the best medical staff in baseball (and it makes a huge difference in getting your best players back in the game) ad the talent this team has only a stupid jacka$$ would make such a prediction. But this is normal for you….call out our team then backtrack when the going is good.
    You belong writing comic books.
    YOU ARE A JOKE.
YOU KNOW ALMOST NOTHING ABOUT SPORTS AND WHAT IT TAKES
    TO PLAY THEM.
YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE NUMBERS AND THE ANALYSIS OF
THIS TEAM AND THE TEAMS IT’S PLAYED AND THE HIDDEN NUMBERS
THAT SHOW THAT THIS TEAM IS REALLY REALLY GOOD.
WHY DON’T YOU AND KEROWACKJOB (HE’S EVEN WORSE THAN YOU
0-10 IN HIS CALLS MAKING YOU LOOK LIKE ALBERT EINSTEIN.
AS I SAID SO MANY TIMES…..FOLLOW THE NUMBERS…FOLLOW THE
EXTRA LITTLE THINGS THAT HAVE CAUGHT THE ROYALS OFFGUARD
    THIS YEAR.
IT’S A LONG LONG LONG SEASON.
AND YOU ‘RE A BIG BIG BIG BIG PHONY WHEN IT COMES TO SPORTS
    AND POLITICS.
AND NOTHING EVER CHANGES WITH THE GLAZA~!

  2. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

    And there it is…….

    • CG says:

Oh yes you are the one who said, politics, Royals, Chiefs…hah well you aren’t wrong. No Chiefs yet. I am all over the Trump wins and he will win it all now. Hillary needs to call old Bernie and get him on board asap. Or she loses. Get that Harley. She loses. If Bernie goes third party…oh boy…Trump in a romp. Hey how bout Trump and Bernie…guess not. Its’ likely Newt. I’m not crazy bout that one.

      • Harley the Great says:

you liar….get your money…put it where you mouth is!
        no don’t do that….diseases abound.
Get your money….because not one thing you’ve predicted or
        discussed has actually happened.
From your apologies about the super bowl pick you made …which
Harley was 100% correct….to your pick in 2012 and since
        with the royals and chiefs.
Lets include no movies…no stardom…..getting kicked out of
businesses for using foul language like calling a great woman
a c*** (very classy) to sex in front of a 9 yearold boy.
        Wow….upstanding citizen.
all talkand no action……be careful its windy today! hahahahaha!

  3. Frank says:

We can say it’s early, but if the season ended today there’d be no playoffs, not even a wild card.

This is the kind of hard thinking analysis that I expect from you Glaze. You are the man. Can you go through the entire league and tell us, if the season were to end today, which teams would would be in the playoffs, which teams would be the wildcards, and which teams would not be in the playoffs. Furthermore, can you do it on, say, a weekly basis.

  4. Frank says:

And you say this didn’t happen last year. I believe the Royals were 16-18 games up at one point, had a bad streak and were only 7 games above 500 only to then go on a tear and be up by 27 games.

    • CG says:

Uh not the same as being 4 1/2 back and 1-6 and can’t score any runs…not the same. This is worse…and lets just see if they fight out of it. As story with stats mentions….if they fall 7 or 8 back its a real problem. Right now they are in worse shape than at ANY time last year. That’s a fact.

  5. paulwilsonkc says:

    Ok, now we’re back in proper sequence;
    Trump
    Royals
    Chiefs
    Trump
    Royals
    Chiefs
Win or lose, go all the way or NOT doesn’t matter, as long as the stories stay in order!

    • Harley the Great says:

I can finally say WILSON IS THE MAN.
get back on here pauly. miss ya.
and as a Hillary supporter we look forward to your future articles!

  6. Whatever says:

Well based on your past articles this is what you’d like to see since. Team success means less business coming into your chuckle hut.

    • CG says:

Not true. I was all over them winning it all going into last years playoffs. They looked great. This season is what it is. Last nights come from behind win was HUGE for the Royals. Another loss and dropping to .500 and falling back 5 1/2 games early would have been demoralizing. That win maybe will get them rolling. Time will tell. I just feel their hitting is suspect this season. It sure could turn around at any time.

      • Harley the Great says:

You’ve written 10 articles about how the royals hurt your
        business. That’s for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope they go undefeated and the tv numbers and stadium
numbers go skyrocket and we’ll add business to your list
of things you know nothing about.
FYI: royals are still killing it. Wait til schools out…you’ll
have more viewers and people at the k.
Again…follow hearnes advice becuasehe’s so smart.

      • Harley the Great says:

I’m sure yost and moose and hoz give a f*ck what some
small biz owner who’s been wrong for over 3 years in every
        prediction says.
You ate your words at least a dozen times…you’reone big phony.

  7. CG says:

People we are all Royals fans. What they did last year and in 2014 was just great. I’m just observing what is happening today. That’s all. Tomorrow they may go on a ten game winning streak. Bats may come to life. We will see.

    • Frank says:

Yeah, we know. If they lose tomorrow, they suck. If they win tomorrow, they’re good. GO, SPORTS TEAM.

    • Frank says:

Be honest with us CG. You aren’t a Royals fan. You don’t even like this city. You should be somewhere else, remember?

  8. Libertarian says:

Yost said that when you have 5 or 6 guys in the order all sucking at once,
    this [losing] happens.

That pretty much sums up the game I attended Monday night.

    The bats werent there.

  9. CG says:

Right Libertarian, but you were there, you are a fan. You are just making an observation. That’s all. Again big win last night helps. The ole come from behind late, Royals style. Lets see what that does.

  10. Harwood Benjamin says:

Breaking News: The Major League Baseball season consists of 162 games.

    • Harley the Great says:

don’t tell glaza that…he thinks it ends may 10. Harwood..love your
comments….you only add to the negative comments generated by
      glaza in his fantasy world.
based on your views….there won’t be any GLAZA movie…time hasrun
out…Hollywood has no use for fairytales.
Every day more b.s. comes from you….thank god you’re on here.

  11. CG says:

Sorry Royals fans. The luck of last night ended today. 13-3 Washington. This Royals team is in trouble. Just a fact. Sorry. 3 errors. There is something wrong. They have time to fix it, but they need to soon.

    • Frank says:

Is this how you are gonna troll for the rest of the season, game after game. You are just as bad as Kerouac or worse. Actually I think you and Kerouac are the same person, with a different screen name. The ridiculous predictability is exactly the same

      • CG says:

FRANK wish I could write as well as K. I’d have made millions, but the price of not doing the right thing in college…so good stories, screenplays but always needed a writing partner for all that…anyways…not trolling Royals have issues…that’s all. We’ll see what comes next.

  12. CG says:

Welp after seeing now a few more games, its just not last years team. AT ALL. Only Hosmer is playing at last years level of position players. Nobody can hit, there is no power…now Moose is out for lord knows how long, the only real power hitter in the lineup gone at a tough time…the Royals are playing their worst baseball in the last three seasons and it ‘ain’t’ no cold spell. Now the pitching is falling apart. Happens when you can’t score runs. Ace Ventura has faded. You can’t use Wade Davis with no leads. The bats remain ice cold and the defeats are set early and now often with large run totals the ‘bad’ guys way.

The only good news is we just need the 5th best record in the American League to get back in the playoffs. If you look at those teams even a watered down Royals team has a shot. Again this is way more than a cold spell. The team is way off and outside of Eric no help in sight. He can’t carry a team. Losing bats of Morales, Cain and Gordon is a killer. I think Cain can fight back, not sure if the others can.

I think we will know in the next few weeks if the Royals will compete again this year. As far as attendance it will remain solid even if they fall, families want to take their kids out to see the World Champs and that will last most of the year no matter what.
