Hearne: The Bill Self Controversy Nobody Will Touch

Tyler Self

Nepotism, anyone?

Heading into the NCAA tourney, the University of Kansas is flying high.

They’re in sole possession of twin Big 12 championships; they’ve won 30 games; and just about anybody and everybody has them as all but a lock for the Final Four with a strong possibility that they. could. go. all. the. way.

So what’s not to like, right?

Well, how about the fact that fabled KU coach Bill Self has given up two slots on the team to a pair of lackluster players, his son Tyler Self and former KU great Danny Manning’s son Evan Manning.

“It’s got to be the worst case of nepotism I’ve ever seen and yet nobody’s bitching,” says Stanford’s Comedy Club main man Craig Glazer.  “Because KU is one of the best teams in the nation and there are some really excellent players out there that could be playing for KU. But they’re being passed over for the two worst players on the team. I find that rather unusual for a team as big as KU.”

Yet mum’s the word in terms of media/public criticism.

Evan

“Bill Self is kinda untouchable,” Glazer continues. “But I mean, here’s a guy who’s played around on his wife and he gets away with it because he’s delivering – he’s won 12 Big 12 championships in a row.”

The flip side of that coli:

“In his defense, he’s got no DUIs and he has no major NCAA offenses. But I mean, he’s a guy who’s been sleeping around, but if anybody attacks Bill Self and they start making it uncomfortable for him in Lawrence, you know, he could get pissed off and just leave.

“Like taking shots at him for having his son on the team – who doesn’t belong on the team – and Self could just say, ‘I can coach somewhere else. Maybe in the NBA.’ ”

Yeah, maybe.

  1. In college, they don’t call that nepotism.
    They always call it legacy.

  2. Frank says:

Really, that’s all you’ve got. Your “controversy” article about nepotism has one source and that source is a family member, so to speak, in Craig Glazer who is peddling sleaze and pulling a bait and switch by saying that if nothing really is wrong, at least he cheated on his wife? REALLY. I’m supposed to be taking moral advice from Craig Glazer. Bill Self isn’t a marriage counselor and cheating on your wife isn’t illegal. I don’t give a rat’s as* if any coach is cheating on his wife. It’s completely irrelevant not only to me but to the point of your lame article. As for the Manning and Self kid. They play on the team? When did that happen? That’s sarcasm by the way, nitwits

  3. CG says:

WELL Frank how it it I’m peddling sleeze old son? I agree Bill can date anyone he wants. Hearne’s point is Bill is untouchable that’s all. As for his son on the team…as explained winning takes care of that. You need to chill.

    • harley the manificent says:

the story was about bill’s son playing on the team.
Glazahas been wrong on every sports event and comment.
Have you seen the kid play? Have you seen him practice or play
in a game. Have you seem him one on one against someone
      better on the team.
      again….FACE PLANT!

  4. LanceTheIntern says:

Why did Hearne go to Glazer as a “source” in an article about nepotism?

  5. harley the manificent says:

lets be honest…..those kids playing might be good players. They’ve only
plays liked 2 minutesa game and mannings kid has one of the best
shooting per centages on the team .500!

  6. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Here’s the simple answer, HC. NCAA D1 basketball teams allow 13 scholarship players. Most teams go 8 to MAYBE 10 players deep in regards to guys that actually see the floor. The exception to this is total blow-outs and those bench warmers get to see the floor for a couple of the final minutes.

The reason that ALL D1 teams have guys like Manning and T. self on their squads is because they are practice “grunts” that are willing to work their asses off for the benefit of the team with ZERO reward.

You can’t find “better players” to replace those guys because they want playing time. No 3, 4 or 5 star player is going to sit on a bench, practice their butts off every single day with NO playing time. Look no further than Connor Frankamp. Not good enough to get consistent minutes so he transferred. But, a hell of a lot better than Self and Manning.

Try watching Senior Night at ANY D1 school and see how many 4 and 5 year seniors there are that you never heard of.

College football has 85 scholarship players. You think all 85 guys are good enough to play when only 26 are starters?

This may be the silliest article of faux outrage you’ve ever written.

  7. Tom Lancaster says:

My guess is neither player is on scholarship (walk-on) and not preventing a more talented player from making the squad. A team also needs 2 – 3 players to walk-on just for practice purposes.

This offense by Bill Self should be put in the Mountain/Molehill category.

  8. KCMonarch says:

My guess is they both hope to go into coaching one day and they are using the opportunity to observe some of the best in the business as student athletes.

What is perplexing is Hearne using Crag Glazier as his “go-to” guy for KU athletics while marketing this as a Lawrence blog.

If it helps I am a little bit embarrassed for you.

  9. Gerald Bostock says:

This article should be dramatized in a Woody Allen movie. Hearne is in line outside a Lawrence movie theater, holding court about the Tyler Self nepotism scandal. Alvy Singer can’t take it any more, summons Jay Bilas on screen who says, ” I heard what you were saying! You know nothing about sports! How you got to write an article on anything is totally amazing!”

  10. JoseJimenez says:

Well, I guess they told you, didn’t they?

FWIW, the way people brush off a guy f***ing around on his wife like it’s nothing is sad and pathetic.

    • Frank says:

There are worse things to worry about than a guy who hasn’t committed a crime. The divorce rate in this country is hovering around 50% and it’s because one spouse has either f***ed somebody else or wants to. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that at least 1 other coach in any sport has cheated, maybe 2, but I’m not gonna push it and suggest 3. That would just be ridiculous. Spare me the fake outrage even if it make you feel better about yourself.

  11. Arte says:

The Bill Self controversy nobody will touch. Man am I disappointed. Really thought this was going to be an article about Bill Self’s toupee or whatever it is on his head.

  12. CG says:

Frank I’ve written several times about the divorce rate, people not be loyal, marriage for the most part doesn’t last or work for too many people. The story just pointed out that when a high profile guy like Bill is doing that in a small town, it usually becomes media topic thats all. I like Bill Self and think he’s done a great job. I have stated that many times. His son being on the team and his other personal issues don’t matter because he is loved as the head coach and a winner. That’s the point. And they shouldn’t be…its not earth shaking news no. KU is on the verge of a great year so things get talked about.

Hearne just wanted to get into a couple things for those reasons. It looks like all is well with Bill. Happy.

  13. Just the Basic Facts says:

I think I will do a movie sometime this year and I will talk to Craig on how to do it since he is such a phenomenal success at doing such.

    NOT!

    • Alphonse Tooty says:

OMG … a “not” joke!! Hahahahaha.

    • CG says:

Welp my five sports movies CHAMPIONS FOREVER did pretty well..my first was the all time best selling sports movie so it must be kinda good CHAMPIONS FOREVER THE HEAVYWEIGHTS STARRING ALI,FOREMAN,NORTON, HOLMES and even ME…first of five, my little attempt at my own movie landed in 10 studios over 3 decades…with a few names on it from Nick Kazan, Eric Eisner and a man named Clint, now with Mayhem/Disney so lets see maybe ten to twenty million spent so far to get it made…I even got a few bucks…but hey you guys have made how many pix?

      • CG says:

I thought this was a sports aritcle…lets attack Glazer on movie deals? Ok? The troll haters are restless.

      • LanceTheIntern says:

CG — Quick question (this may have been asked before — if it has, let me know)….IMDB has the production crew for “Champions Forever” listed as:

        Tom Bellagio … executive producer
        Nicholas Celozzi … associate producer
        George Edde … executive producer
        Kenny Griswold … co-producer
        Joseph Medawar … producer
        Roy Medawar … supervising producer
        F. Daniel Somrack … supervising producer
        Hollister Whitworth … executive producer
        Nabeel Zahid … producer

        Why aren’t you listed here?

        • the dude says:

Yeah Glayzer, were you the coke money guy that was an uncredited producer?

          • Just the Basic Facts says:

This is an area that Craig has refused to answer many times. He bought the rights to these movies but he didn’t make them. He has like a short spot on one if I remember right. Sort of like saying I own Cadillac because I bought one. And if Clint won’t make your movie it can only mean it’s crap that he isn’t going to tarnish his name with.

        • Stomper says:

I’ve seen this discussed here often and never thought it was worth commenting on. This time I did some really simple searching and found a listing of the production credits for the movie and it had Craig Glazer listed twice. First an as Associate Producer and then as the Representative for the Executive Producer.

          • LanceTheIntern says:

Thanks, Stomper….I noted that CG was listed as “Producer” on Champions Forever the Definitive Edition: Muhammad Ali – The Lost Interviews. I couldn’t reconcile the two, and didn’t bother to look past IMDB.

          • harley the manificent says:

stomp knockouts the b.s ers about glaze’s
boxing movie. Way to go champ!

          • the dude says:

So, basically the coke money guy.
            Thanks for clarifying Stomp.

  14. harley the manificent says:

    all those anti glaze people:
I go after the glaze on sports and politics. I have a good time with him and
I’m sure he enjoys bantering with Harley.
But Harley made a prediction sometime ago…that glaze would get a
huge break. And as you know Harley is never wrong!
    So hold on….Harley knows.
And maybe we’ll have a major tv star in our midst! HOPEFULLY.

    • the dude says:

They doing a reality show about the Harley Mole man that lives under OP Sewage Treatment Plant No.2? Good to hear you got picked up, harlinator.

  15. Gangster = Politician says:

I’d say ole Glazer is hating on Self. Ironic isn’t it.

    • CG says:

I like and respect Bill Self and have written about him often. Great coach, good guy. I’ve said he is KC area all time best coach along with Hank Stram.

      • harley the manificent says:

Regardless of what the glaza says or his critics say…
        KU is looking incredible.
They have guards that are nba quality…perry is doing exactly
what I said he needed to: take over the inside….become the
        Danny Manningfor the team.
But I can’t figure out Miami and Villanova which they will
(I shouldn’t say will because of all the upsets) and how ku
        would handle them.
Regardless of all the b.s. hearne tried to stir up here….
ku is going far…and lets see them bring home the
championship….even with bill’s son on the team.
Come on hearne…is that the best you can do.?

  16. Jayhawk '97 says:

“If you lose your job to someone that can’t speak English, your job sucks” – Some comedian who I’m not going to look up to verify.

“If you lose playing time to Tyler Self, your basketball skills suck”- Jayhawk ’97

  17. The Truth says:

It’s well known I’m a Glaze defender, I think he get unfairly attacked on here for sharing his thoughts. He is a caricature in the KC Media scene. He plays his part.

But this article, Hearne, is a little too far, even for a yellow journalism site like this.

It’s one thing to take a swipe at nepotism, though anyone who understands basketball knows this happens all the time. Remember Danny Manning’s dad as a coach? Did you know the #1 player in the country, Ben Simmons at LSU has an uncle that coaches for the team. Not to mention that everyone knows why there are bench players who are not on scholarship, not only are they practice players, but I would assume both Self and Manning’s kids have pretty high basketball IQs for walk ons.

That being said, it’s quite another thing to have quotes talking about him cheating on his wife. No proof, just quotes from CG, with no clear reason as to mentioning it in a story about nepotism. And don’t say it’s relevant because he hasn’t been fired because of it. We all know plenty of people who have cheated on loved ones who don’t get fired. One has nothing to do with the other.

Tell the nepotism story, though if you understood sports you never would have posted, but don’t try to take swipes at people personal life with unsubstantiated quotes. Even this site should be better than that.
