Glazer: Can the Chiefs Finally Win a Playoff Game? Plus Picks!

imagesHow good are our Kansas City Chiefs?

For starters they’re the winners of 10 in a row. Amazing. They started 1-5 and ended up in the playoffs. Amazing.

Yet they are 25-1 to win the Super Bowl. Not so amazing.

The Chiefs have one of the NFL’s worst post season records. They only won playoff games after their Super Bowl win in 1970 twice. That’s over a 45-year period. Wow. So naturally everyone is a bit skeptical. Even Chiefs fans.

Is this team really better than just decent? Are they very good?

My answer is yes, they are a good team. They’re balanced on both sides of the ball. We have a few issues of course.

This team needs Alex Smith to be a top notch quarterback in the playoffs to make it to the AFC Championship game. Can he do it? I think he has it in him.

However, his best day going deep was that loss to the Colts two seasons ago when our defense was at the high school level. We have not really seen that Alex Smith since. B]So bombs away, Alex. He is great at short throws and short runs for first downs.

The fear is if we get behind he can’t put this team on his back and score.

He has shown flashes but not enough.

The Chiefs have relied on getting leads and sitting on them while their defense fights off the other teams trying to come back. So far so good. However there have been nail bitters nearly every week the last month. KC not only has won their last four road games they have covered the spread playing better on the road than at home.

Now Houston.

6a00d83451d77869e20148c7936471970c-800wiWe beat them in game one this season before the 5 game losing streak. They’ve had 99 quarterbacks since. They count on their defense to win for the most part. Yes, they have JJ Watt and company. However, KC is a 3 to 4 point favorite even at Houston on the road.

I like our chances.

I’d have to pick Kansas City in this one. Our offense has more weapons, our defense seems to make more big plays. We have our top two linebackers returning Justin Houston and Tamba Hali.

Then it’s on to Denver or New England depending on who wins the other wild card game. Steelers or Bengals. The Chiefs are truly a wild card nobody really has a strong feeling one way or the other as to doing better than winning just the Houston game.

Tell you what, at 25-1 I think its worth a few bucks to give it a whirl.

The Chiefs are just good enough to give it a run. I like them in Houston. After that we’ll see.

“they’re the winners of 10 in a row. Amazing. ”

    – not really; fraud era NFL, no accomplishment is notable, which applies same sports otherwise in general. Three years ago, the MLB’s Dodgers went 42-8 over a 50-game stretch – unbelievable according to the fuzzy-cheeked sport nascent. Then, they went pfft! post season, then as now still looking for their first legit win nigh on 30 years, as the swiss have been an even greater number of seasons on end.

When the end comes for the swiss as it surely will/always does’, rallying cry ‘wait till next year’ will again present. Not peachy keen so much as the pits thereof & another bitter stogie they will be forced to smoke.

I agree, CG. Anytime you can do something that has never been done in your team’s history, that is an amazing accomplishment. Unfortunately, if they don’t make it 11 in a row………it was all for naught.

But, it’s been a helluva ride the last 2 1/2 months. Quite the winning streak that KC sports teams have been on. Hope it continues.

I like your KC, Packers & Seahawks picks. I’d go the other way with the Bengals & ‘Bama.

    Go Chiefs!!

    • krislke says:

No, it won’t be “all for naught” if they lose Saturday, or any other game in the playoffs. They won 10 in a row. It’s in the books. And it’s something no other Chiefs team has done, not even in the glory years.

Good grief, are we becoming like New York fans who can’t appreciate a good team if it doesn’t win it all? Every year? Yeah, winning championships is always the goal, but good Gawd, only one team among 32 is going to do that in any given year.

Yeah, “one and done” would be disappointing. But does it make the ride the Chiefs have given us this year “all for naught”? I don’t think so.

They gave us plenty of memories and plenty to cheer about regardless how the playoffs turn out. Appreciate that for what it is.

  3. k wacky is always wrong…

I’d put money up against these sports idiots.
LIKE TAKING MONEY FROM A BABY……….ONLY THING IS THAT THE

    BRING ON THE CASH CHUMPS!

  4. Frank says:

They’re a failed franchise. Just ask you.

  5. Newbaumturk says:

They should beat Houston. Will I be surprised if they don’t? No, because Chiefs. They’ve let me down so many times I hope for the be but expect the worst.

  6. Furioso says:

Tony Kornheiser(who all the sudden seems 93 years old) suggested the Alex Smith led Chiefs might be the team to beat in the AFC. He said all the other QB’s have issues: Peyton is over the hill(pot calling kettle black), Brady’s teammates are all hurt, Cincy’s starting QB is OUT, Roethlisberger has lost to Hou, Bal, and the Texans have a different starter every week.

Has any team besides the 72 Dolphins ever finished 14-0 with a Super Bowl victory?

    • krislke says:

The 2003 Patriots finished 15-0 with an Super Bowl win.

But it won’t happen very often because teams like that are usually dominant, and they have things pretty much sewn up late in the season. So they rest their starters and play reserves more to prepare for the playoff grind.

  7. CG says:

The Chiefs, one could argue, are the most complete and healthy team entering todays AFC playoffs. Again if Alex Smith can give us his A- game and the D can do the same the Chiefs will be in the AFC title game. Like we have seen over and over, nobody trusts the Chiefs due to their horrid post season past. Rightfully so. I have a feeling this year will be different. Hey if I had a crystal ball, I’d be on the beach somewhere. Nobody knows. So lets just wait and see. It’s theirs for the taking. Winning ten in a row in today NFL is no easy task no matte who you play. The Chiefs did face some solid teams that can and did beat other playoff teams, the Bills, the Raiders twice, Denver on the road, so it wasn’t like two years ago when the went 9-0 against all bad teams. This club is good that one wasn’t.

How good? It begins today. And you guys are right if they don’t win a couple playoff games that 10 game run won’t mean much.

  8. Furioso says:

    #19 torn ACL?

At least we’re still going to New England or Denver next week. Go KC!

    • miket says:

doesn’t look good. they’re saying “serious” but maclin’s face said it all. he won’t be playing next week. fortunately the offense seems to be producing just the same.

      oh… k-rac… 27 to 0, chiefs. ZERO. nada. goose egg. noth-ing. doesn’t matter how or who. 27. eat it. here’s the salt…

      • CG says:

OUR BEST PLAYER IS DONE…ANDHE ‘IS THE OFFENSE. WE HAVE NOT MUCH OF ONE ANYWAYS…DON’T KID YOURSELF WE MOVED THE BALL LATE CAUSE HOUSTON QUIT ON HOYER…THEY THINK HE SUCKS TOO…

NICE WIN AT HIGH COST..PROBLEM IS ALEX JUST IS NOT IMPROVING AND WITHOUT A CHICAGO 1985 DEFESNE CHIEFS ARE LIKELY DONE NOW…HEY THEY WON AND BROKE THE CURSE AND THE D IS GREAT BUT O ISN’T…JUST ISN’T AND ITS CAUSE ALEX IS JUST OK…AND NEVER WILL GET BETTER HE JUST WON’T…JURY IS IN HE IS JUST ‘OK’ NOT A SUPER BOWL QB…UNLESS OUR D GETS US THERE, VERY UNLIELY…

HOWEVER DENVER, PATS AND STEELERS ALL HAVE ISSUES TOO SOOOOOOOOO…STAND BY…TOO BAD ALEX ISN’T A BPLUS QB WE’D BE A SUPER BOWL TEAM…HE IS A B- QB…SIMPLE AS THAT. DAMN THE LUCK.

        • miket says:

yeah, and now you’re sounding like k-rac.

did maclin score a td today? can’t recall if the second one was his or not. but let’s say he did. rest of the team scored 27, craig! defense skunked them. that’s damn good, good enough to beat den, pats, etc.

          enjoy it for a night.

          • Furioso says:

Maclin didn’t score a TD but I’m sure he made an impact coverage wise.

Looks like Houston was hot because of their weak schedule and they were outcoached by Reid and obviously outQB’d by Alex Smith.

I think we’re prob. going to New England next week.

        • Kerouac says:

Correct CG, they were never even in the conversation post season. Texans beat themselves, swiss did nothing to earn any credit… nothing.

      • Furioso says:

It’s amazing what a very good coach and a very good QB can do for a NFL team. Add a great defense and you’ve got a winner.

  9. Kerouac says:

As for #19, oww, my knee! Live by the hotdog, die by it…sweet poetic justice maclin – next up (down), kelce, houston & the rest the prima donas.

Yet another HORRENDOUS performance by the swiss, still no post season wins legit in 49 years since 1/1/1967 & of course no legit Championship ever too, in 52+ years now; ditto the Athletics and (f)r(aud)oyals.

    Go Broncos!

    🙂

  10. Kerouac says:

    Continuing…

macklan, did that hurt? It looked real painful when your knee crumpled. A torn ACL, huh? Gee, that’s a shame. The parlance, ‘payback’ as the old adage is an (female dog). Had he/other swiss not been more concerned with showing ‘class’ instead of their a*s, i.e., show-boatin’, but, well… too late now, huh.

When it happened, Kerouac was a dabbin’ (cam newton), doin’ that hand jive (justine houston), the spaz dance (travass kelce), shootin’ an imaginary arrow in the air (erik dinkle-berry) and otherwise chest thumpin’ & sky pointin’ all in celebration of… me.

Contrary to popular belief you see, there is no ‘we’ in ‘team’ circa 2016, only be letter ‘I’ for ‘I’ndividuals; the ‘I’s have it. Isn’t that sorta mean & bereft class someone (a poster for example) having a good time at the expense an opposition player, team or fandom? Not at all, be merely tit for tat: turnabout being fair play modern era the prima donas.

Broncos and Patriots for the AFC Championship, best of the fraud-era NFL AFC, just ahead the Steelers and Bengals 2nd best wave mediocres. Those other 28 teams AFC so poor they don’t even merit mention (any AFL team 1964 would beat all of them.)

    Next weekend:

    @BRONCOS 24 Steelers 20

  11. Furioso says:

Go KC! You’ve shutout the Texans and earned a trip to New England. They’re a little weak this year so Attack! Attack!

  12. Furioso says:

Okay today’s Seattle at Minnestoa Vikings game:

    1:41PM EST – 2nd Qtr starts
    1:45PM EST – Start of 4 or 5 commercials – I mute the TV
    1:47PM EST – Game resumes – Unmute
1:52PM EST – More commercials – I mute the TV
1:53PM EST – Winter depression sets in

  13. CG says:

Good comments and yes the Chiefs have a shot, no doubt, their D is today best in NFL. So as mentioned New England is not perfect and can be had. No question. So lets see if the Chiefs can climb that hill.

    • Kerouac says:

Yep, great comments. You, your sock puppets, and 3 actual people.

      • the dude says:

I bet glayzer actually has sock puppets with the names he uses on them and mouths the words as he types with his other hand.

    • LETS BOYCOTT THE CHEIFS/CLARK AND THE STADIUM.
When I watch the espys I watch for the stupidest ccomments made
by a monkey, YOU WILL IT ALL HANDS DOWN.
Hpefully you don’t jinx the chiefs…but again you can’t break an
      old man of bad habits.
      don’t mention the chiefs….you’re a jinxand a phony bettor.

      their next game.

      please stfu!

  14. Libertarian says:

Just as I called it-we won out, and are NOT 1 & done in the post season!

NE is ripe for the picking, too.

  15. CG says:

My Chiefs story will be out later today or morning…when he gets it up. Good weekend we got all four playoff games right. Nice way to end season…

Chiefs are a 5 point dog as of now. Maclin has high ankle sprain, likely out next week. Brady had one for a few weeks and they lost both games. Hmmm…Media starting to fall for Chiefs, even ESPN are liking them to maybe just maybe get to Super Bowl with that D and they way Reid is handling Alex. So it could be Royals 2014 again.

    • Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

The Chiefs played well and the Texans failed to show up. But that’s what happens when you play in a weak division and have no quarterback. Weaknesses are exposed in the playoffs, big time.

The Steelers/Bengals game was one of the meanest, hard hitting, nasty, grudgefests I’ve ever seen. The AFC North is just a brutal division. The teams flat out hate each other.

    • krislke says:

“. . . we got all four playoff games right.”

Except you played them as two, two-team tease parlays which paid you absolutely zip. Had you played them as one four-team parlay, you might have made some money.

      • krislke says:

Also, realize that if the Vikings kicked that 27-yard field goal at the end, then you lose your ass. Double if the Bengals don’t have their meltdown.

But you had it all figgered out.

        • CG says:

Wow so you wan to hate on that! Never ends huh. Winning is just that. If this if that…happens every week. Nobody knows what will happen. They are educated guesses. Thats all. If it was a science all the experts would win most games on picks, THEY DON’T. I have no clue why you or anyone acts this way… you win some, you lose some.

          • krislke says:

Yes, indeed. It was “educated” when the Vikings muffed the field goal and the Bengals melted down. It takes a real genius to see that.

But hey, you saw it coming all along. After all, you know so much about football.

  16. Kerouac says:

Kerouac nails yet another season result – swiss die again just like the royals* – both still have no Championships in 62 years of trying, KC…
