Glazer: Don’t Look Now But These Chiefs Could Be the Real Deal

imagesIt was head coach Any Reid’s biggest Chief’s victory to date…

On the road at Oakland minus Justin Houston the team’s No. 1 pass rusher . And facing one of the league’s best passing attacks from the Raiders Derek Carr, Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. The Chiefs stepped up.

Starting in the second quarter the Chiefs’ defense put tons of pressure on Carr with all hands on deck including Derrick Johnson, Josh Mauga, Frank Zambo and Tamba Hali. The Chiefs’ pass defense also stepped up with three interceptions against a quarterback who had only six all season. They were led by likely rookie of the year on defense Marcus Peters – who now has five interceptions for the year. Peters may be our best and most meaningful No. 1 pick since Tony G. and Derrick Thomas. He’s a game changer.

The 34-20 final score doesn’t really show how tough this game really was.

The Chiefs missed some key extra points, as did Oakland. In fact all in, nine overall were missed yesterday in the NFL (only 8 were missed all of last year). So it looks like moving the ball back for extra point kicks does matter.

The Chiefs are now 7-5 with the No. 1 wild card spot.

And their last four games are against weak teams – the Chargers, Baltimore, Cleveland – and finally Oakland at home, which could be tricky. Barring injuries KC will be a solid favorite in all four games. And lord knows there’ve been a ton of injuries in the NFL this season, however KC has not lost many top players except Jamaal Charles thus far.

This is the Chiefs best overall team since Marty Schottenheimer was head coach.

Marty had two 13-3 teams and later Dick Vermeil had one 13-3 squad. That said, the 1990’s 13-3 teams were better than this team thus far, and still couldn’t win even one playoff game. The Vermeil team had no defense and was not a top tier team by seasons end.

This Chiefs team is balanced.

And with an improving offensive line – led by the improvement of Eric Fisher and company – this year’s Chiefs could be very good by seasons end if everyone gets well.

QB Alex Smith threw a pair of TD passes and ran for another. And with no INT’S, Smith continues to get better, even going deep a few times. Jeremy Maclin now has five TD catches, last year no wide receiver on KC had one. Hey how/s Dwayne Bowe doing? Not well, I see.

UnknownAs long as Smith makes the defense respect his throwing further downfield with success and his running the ball as he has, the Chiefs are a dangerous offense. And the Chiefs getting INT’s and fumble recoveries to the plus 13 side is huge.

Can the Chiefs go deep in the playoffs?

The team’s history says no. And with but two major post seasons since 1969 and the Super Bowl win that season – and 24 years later with Joe Montana beating Warren Moon  and the now defunct Houston Oilers in 1994. Since then nothing. So our history says no, but its a new year, a new squad and maybe starting 1-5 being out of it has helped in some odd way.

Alex Smith is coming into his own finally.

He’s showing that maybe, just maybe, he’s a Top 10 quarterback in this league. Zero turnovers since early in the season by Alex. Now all of he’s sudden throwing touchdowns.

Maybe the World Series Royals rubbed off on our Chiefs – we’ll see!

Hey, it’s fun to have meaningful NFL games at seasons end. Hasn’t happened in years. Reid’s first season with the 9-0 start was b.s. – that was not a good team – this one looks like they could be for real.

It’s certainly been a nice turn-around from that 5-game losing streak, but I think the Chiefs just happen to be the “best” of the “not-very-good” teams in the league this year. There has been some pretty awful football in 2015.

Yes, the Chiefs have a number of good players. they don’t have ANY great players. Tough to win championships (or playoff games) when your roster is filled with good, not great, players.

All NFL teams have banged up rosters at this time of the year. I think the Chiefs have done a better job of managing that than the other teams. That’s been a big part of the 6-game winning streak. it’s probably going to continue because the remaining games are against teams that are HORRIBLE. Winning those probably isn’t going to mean a damn thing come playoff time.

Good article, CG. You certainly are optimistic. Me? Not so much….

    • CG says:

JIM you are preeching to the choir…couldn’t agree more…almost what I was gonna write if we lost…lots of good players no great players…I think Marcus Peters could one day be great…but you nailed it…I hope for the best but yeah no great ones, none really…major on point comment. Thank You

      • Furioso says:

The Chiefs do have some great players but more importantly they have GREAT COACHING. There’s probably only 5-10 good head coaches in the NFL and Reid is definitely one of them.

Reid’s only problem is he’s the coach in an organization that only demands average..owner Hunt just needs/wants average to make a buck.

Still, Reid demands more from HIS TEAM and HIMSELF. The players are playing for their coach because he instills that in them.

If we had any of those below average coaches then everybody would have thrown in the towel by now and we’d be 3-9.

        1. Its going to snow….someday in 2016!
        2. The sun will shine
        3. My girl hot chocolate will do a lap dance
        4. My hair needs to be replaced every 3 months.
        5. After 13 weeks…I predict the chiefs have a chance
        to MAKE the playoffs.
        6. On November 10, 2015 the royals will be world
        champions.
        7. MY movie script has hit the circular.
        8. I will play batman in the new super hero movie.
        9. Jerry Seinfeld will give up 500K to play at my
        comedy shop
        10. I will continue in 2016 to be behind the 8 ball in every
prediction I make regardless of of what Kerwoacky
        says.

  2. LanceTheIntern says:

That Oakland field is a POS — especially once it gets wet. That’s the biggest reason for the missed kicks, rather than moving the ball back.

  3. Kerouac says:

    “The Chiefs stepped up.”

    – rather, Raiders played down to the swiss level… OAK 27 – 18 victors otherwise

“34-20 final score doesn’t really show how tough this game really was.”

    – exactly: no credit due the swiss – Raiders beat themselves…

“Can the Chiefs go deep in the playoffs?”

    – heh heh heh heh heh, that is all…

“Reid’s first season with the 9-0 start was b.s. – that was not a good team – this one looks like they could be for real.”

    – the swiss look as ‘real’ as the Patriots/Belichick/Brady – two weeks ago ‘greatest of all time’, now 0-2 since – they along with the 30 other teams NFL are jokes.

As it stands, the AFC teams who will make the playoffs are DEN (best), CIN, NE… two of the three PITT, NYJ and BUFF look good to take the final wild card spots. HOU has a very slim chance (won’t happen), ditto the swiss. The swiss 2015 season ends in four weeks: ‘wait till next year’, part 2016 verse 47 appends…

Well comment people say I jump back and forth…I am always reporting on whats going on now, not what I want to happen. K you just hate these guys no matter what…do I think they are elite, super bowl no but hey I’m always willing to give them a shot and prove different..your not…they are a decent maybe even good squad at this point lets see what happens.

          bazookas….write something relevant and something
          you know something about.
til then…no more chiefs bandwagon articles.
          you write like crap.
Just a few weeks ago you said everyone should
boycott arrowhead and the chiefs…then you took
your head out of your a$$ when you saw the chuiefs
          start winning.
Don’t jinx us glaze. You’re horrible in sports….
wost than a blind dog at a dart board!

  4. Hot Carl says:

I like the Chiefs as much as the next guy, and like everyone else I think Kerouac is a slapd*ck, but this team isn’t going anywhere. The turnaround from the awful start has been fun but we’ve all been down this road before and know that it leads to a 9 or 10 win season, a quick exit from the playoffs and a middle of the road draft pick.

Doesn’t seem to matter who the coach is, who the players are or who’s the GM…this team is just built for constant, never-ending mediocrity. I guess we should be happy we’re not Cleveland but I’d rather be Pittsburgh or New England.

    • Furioso says:

idk we haven’t had a great coach since Hank Stram so this time around the Chiefs might be for real. Champ Bailey said on The Herd yesterday he thinks KC has a shot at the Super Bowl. Peter King has the Chiefs(5) AT Indy(4) in the Wildcard playoff game on 10 Jan.

Here’s my dream playoff run for KC:
10 Jan: KC AT IND – KC advances
16/17 Jan: KC AT DEN – KC advances
24 Jan: KC AT NE – KC advances
7 Feb: KC VS CAR – KC wins Super Bowl 50!

  5. Kerouac says:

CG, we agree to disagree regarding the swiss, and that’s ok… don’t take umbrage like my imposter (post above yours), who the real Kerouac has obviously gotten into the head of. 60+ years of no legit Championships teams in KC will have that effect on some folks…

      belong in the can.

    • Stomper says:

K-whack, I hesitate to comment here and give you any more reason to respond but, what the heck.

Speaking only for myself, obviously, when you first began commenting here, you impressed me as a thoughtful, intelligent, opinionated poster. I didn’t always agree with you but you certainly appeared to have both feet firmly planted on Earth. You especially showed a command of statistics related to sports. Once the Royals run towards the playoffs began last year, you seemed to get great pleasure in trashing them and discrediting any success they had. They lost to the Giants and you seemed to have no problem praising and legitimizing the success of the boys from the Bay. At one point in the past year, you even presented a credible case using the statistics from players and teams from 50+ years ago to justify why, in your opinion, todays sports teams and sports heroes just don’t measure up. Ok, that got you a bit of mileage. But you continue to beat a dead horse here and even when the Royals won the World Series, you continue to trash them, discredit them, discredit KC sports teams in general. I’m confident you get great pleasure raining on any parade KC might have and continually hammering that point here, always ending with your trademark 🙂

While in the beginning you were, to me, a respectable and intelligent commenter who could adequately support your position, the success of the Royals in 2014 seemed to transform you into a crotchety old guy that lives only in the past ( and I mean long time ago , past) that cannot accept the fact that in the sports world ( always, today and yesterday), real life outcomes are measured on the scoreboard. I guess not in your bizzaro world. Your definition of “legitimate” defies all logic.

The sad thing here is that now you are a laughed at, one trick pony that destroyed his own credibility. We don’t need to spend time questioning your points. You have self-immolated. Such a waste.

      • Shawnster says:

+1! Agree. Well put. It’s always somebody else’s fault with that guy. He’s been wrong so much lately. Head to the light k-whack. Your all done here.

      • HARLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! says:

    – re: your preface, good to know; otherwise, Sybil-esque as those who pretend speak for others…

“when you first began commenting here, you impressed me as a thoughtful, intelligent, opinionated poster. ”

    – Hear Hear! Author Author! Encore Encore!

“I didn’t always agree with you”

    – so you’re the one – but aft reading He, you were hooked… Kerouac understands.

“but you certainly appeared to have both feet firmly planted on Earth. You especially showed a command of statistics related to sports.”

    – you’ve exquisite taste (the line forms to the right…)

“Once the Royals run towards the playoffs began last year, you seemed to get great pleasure in trashing them and discrediting any success they had. They lost to the Giants and you seemed to have no problem praising and legitimizing the success of the boys from the Bay.”

    – nod Howie, Kerouac ‘tells it like it is’ – whether you/anyone agrees is immaterial to me…

    – vintage Garland, spin on the lyrics – “I made you love me, you didn’t wanna do it, didn’t wanna do it’…

“But you continue to beat a dead horse here”

    – let’s not pile on the swiss: they’ve only gone 53 years KC with no legit Championship; compared the even more hapless Athletics/Royals 61 seasons, be nascent’s…

    “and”

    – yes, go on…

“even when the Royals won the World Series, you continue to trash them, discredit them, discredit KC sports teams in general.”

    – can’t get anything past you, huh…

“I’m confident you get great pleasure raining on any parade KC might have and continually hammering that point here, always ending with your trademark :)”

    – a regular subscriber…

“While in the beginning you were, to me, a respectable and intelligent commenter who could adequately support your position”

    – aww, shucks…

    – nod Pantene, “don’t hate me because I’m beautiful”…

“that cannot accept the fact that in the sports world ( always, today and yesterday), real life outcomes are measured on the scoreboard.”

    – Championships, wins , stats are not/never have been equal – refer to Kerouac’s prodigious research/blogs here KCC as elsewhere for evidence…

“I guess not in your bizzaro world. Your definition of “legitimate” defies all logic.”

    – talent does as it can, mine genius as it must – that you cannot refrain from reading / responding mine, evident…

“The sad thing here is that now you are a laughed at, one trick pony that destroyed his own credibility.”

    – that’s some of the worst method acting I’ve ever seen/read; well here, try it again & this time ‘PROJECT’ – really get into your blather so that the audience believes you…

“We don’t need to spend time questioning your points.”

    – we? Sybil alert…

“You have self-immolated. Such a waste.”

  10. CG says:

Hey guys K is a good man. He writes better than most and he sure is entertaining. So he doesn’t think our KC sports teams have been the best lately. Well until the Royals became baseball’s best, he’s right. Maybe some people with the Chiefs and even the Royals who read all these sites get fired up when they see them. Who knows. Call it inspiration. The Chiefs are at least interesting this season. Is the league down? Is it just the new NFL? Are the ref’s controlling the game? Are players too greedy now? All of the above. Could be. I’ve been down on both franchises the last several years. Why? They deserved it. However I see the big change and its nice for Kansas City and the fans. So K at least you can appreciate that huh? I know you can. Hell its just entertainment in the end. And guess what, all the real glory and money goes to the teams, players and owners. Not us.

    • KCMonarch says:

I’ve not seen any hard numbers but my guess is the Royals winning the world championship has had a significant impact on the local economy. It’s not just the teams, players and owners benefitting.

It is understandable that far fewer discretionary dollars set aside for entertainment are making their way into your chuckle hut. (two drink minimum please) Which I suspect is the real reason you dislike the local sports franchises.

The better the Chiefs and Royals do, the less cash you get to spend on your ‘ahem’ extracurricular activities.

      • Gilded Ghetto says:

Monarch is right. For what it’s worth, businesses downtown cleaned up like it was a gold rush. I’m assuming the ones near the Stadium did as well. Sorry that wasn’t a windfall for your bar 25 miles from the city in another state. Maybe if the parade had rolled through the heart of Stanley. Keep telling yourself that JoCo is the real heart of the city. Keep listening to the racist suburbanites who would agree.

      • CG says:

NO clue. Never addressed the cities income on the playoffs. Did I.

  11. Keroauc says:

“K at least you can appreciate that huh?”

    – something about ‘even a blind squirrel and an acorn’… no CG, cannot appreciate the fraud that is modern day sport: it, as evidenced by both the royals & swiss, is a joke. And still no legit Championship by a baseball or football team in the history of KCindy, none baseball 1955-2015, none football 1963-2015… and the beat(down) goes on.

“Hell its just entertainment in the end.”

    – my imposter (post above yours at December 9, 2015 at 10:58 pm) can appreciate that; as for the real Kerouac, His entertainment (beyond watching the swiss and the royals mediocrity ad nauseam) derives seeing some bloggers bothered so much by another’s comments… ‘living rent-free in their heads’ come to mind.
