imagesThe estimates for 800,000 people at the Royals Rally Tuesday is raising some eyebrows.  Several KC Confidential readers have questioned this number as well – all 1.5 million of them!

Last year Kansas City broke a tourism record with 24 million people visiting our city and this year they believe we’ll shatter that record. Most came for the amusement parks and baseball games and to buy KC souvenirs made in China.

Royals star Alex Gordon is already testing the free agent waters.  He reportedly turned down a $13.7 million player option. Gordon was one of only three Royals players who weren’t paid by the hour.

One Response to Starbeams: KC Confidential’s Million Reader March, Made in China, Hourly Royals

  1. Laura Black says:

I have seen one million people all in once place at the same time … when the Pope visited Chicago in ’76, I was on-stage for the Sunday Mass in Grant Park. Based on what I saw that day … along with estimates of people attending Taste of Chicago year after year, I studied as many photos I could find of the Royals’ rally at Union Station. I looked at photos of people backed up on the streets leading to Union Station, as well. Not that my scholarship is all that empirical, but neither are the estimates of sports talk radio, who seemed to state a larger number each time I turned on the radio. I estimate the crowd to have been in the 250,000 range. A great turnout considering that Kansas City has no mass transit … no light rail, anyway. But, that’s another story.
