Glazer: Royals in Six But Who Outside of KC Much Cares?

UntitledThis city’s all tied up in knots…

Everyone in KC is focused on the big games that start today. Can we be world champs for the first time in 30 years? Is our team the best? Can our city get the attention and respect from the media we deserve?

Let’s look at that for a moment.

While the Royals playoff games were placed on channel FS1 – in other words a channel that was not mainstream (ch. 75 vs Fox ch. 6 ).

And remember, it was that way everywhere in America and Canada. Yet the games drew well. Up from last year’s playoffs even though they weren’t on CBS or TBS or ESPN. Nice. Viewership was over 4.0 with as many as 6 plus million viewers nationwide.

The bad news is last night’s Monday Night Football Game drew a rating of 8.1 and had over 12 million viewers.

Not even an NFL playoff game, just a regular season game. Baseball is no longer America’s Game – it’s now football.

Squidward_who_caresYep, I watch ESPN in the morning and Mike & Mike on ESPN 2. Sure, they mention the World series, who is starting and a quick shot of Eric Hosmer. But mostly they talk about the New York Mets. Hey, they’re in New York.

And both shows spent way more time on the NFL, Lebron James and the NBA starting up, Greg Hardy and the Dallas Cowboys, Roger Goodell and Tom Brady. Even  a pie throwing contest between Mets and Cubs guys who lost a bet on who would win their playoff games. Not much on the Royals. Little to no mention of Ned Yost and his fantastic efforts with the Royals. I’m afraid its like, “Oh yeah, the World Series.”

When most of us were kids it was a really big deal.

The world seemed to stop to watch. AND OF COURSE, WE WEREN’T IN IT. I

t was always the Yankees, St. Louis, the Dodgers or Detroit  – not us. But we were all glued to the TV or radio to see what Mickey Mantle would do – or later Reggie Jackson. Today it’s almost based more on the city itself, their team and their fans.

I remember a couple years back it was game six of the World Series. I was at Legends in the comedy club and only a couple guys were in the bar watching the big game. Nobody in the comedy crowd asked what the score was or even cared. Sad. No, we weren’t in it.

Times have changed, but hey we love the Royals.

It’s still THE WORLD SERIES and KC’s TV audience for the playoffs was over 41.0.

We care. It matters.

So even if the games aren’t as important to the rest of the nation or world as they once were, they matter a ton to us.

Royals in six! Lets win this damn thing and make them care.

Yes, I also remember the good old days when it seemed like the entire world stopped for the World Series — regardless of who was in it, and regardless that they were all day games.

But go check the attendance figures for the regular season in baseball. They used to pop champagne corks when the 1 millionth paying customer walked through the turnstile. And even adjusted for inflation, tickets were a heck of a lot cheaper. Box seats for $3.50 in Kauffman when it opened.

These days? People are beating down the gates to pay through the nose to see major league baseball live.

And realize that TV ratings aren’t so awful that baseball isn’t generating huge amounts of money from them — far more than they ever did during the “good old days” again, even adjusted for inflation.

Well, OK. Nobody in your comedy club wanted to watch the playoffs when the Royals weren’t in it. I’m sure baseball owners cried all the way to the bank over that.

I’m sure the playoffs are killing your biz glaze.
you need to dosomethingto stimulate business…give some free

    – that tide(al wave) actually starting turning the other direction back in 1965 according news of the time; by the late 60’s, was no argument against. Alright, no more shoveling dirt upon the coffin another ‘this is our year’ part 30 version Royals (we’ll let the Mets take care of that 🙂

    Let’s talk swiss chiefs.

Missed your football picks here last weekend, CG – and what a weekend it was to miss. Upsets galore, college football. Meanwhile, here in Kansas City (where we spell relief t-h-i-r-d- s-t-r-i-n-g q-b), was like old times, ‘deja vu all over again’ nod Yogi: the swiss actually found a familiar friend, recipe a win / someone they could beat.

(And then) along came Jones, first NFL start Jones, KC’s answered prayer: before you knew it, twas ‘happy days are here again’ – a redux 2013’s string of tomato cans posing as QB’s, helped turn a 8-8 team into an 11-5 one (- ditto one and done -) playoff team. Courtesy Steelers/Landry-like ineptitude, Case Keenum, Jeff Tuel and Matt McGloin; may they all rest in peace.

Get your swiss chiefs post season tickets now, on sale wherever high hopes are sold.

“While the Royals playoff games were placed on channel FS1 – in other words a channel that was not mainstream (ch. 75 vs Fox ch. 6 ).”

Almost all of the league championship games in both leagues were on FS1.

“Not even an NFL playoff game, just a regular season game. Baseball is no longer America’s Game – it’s now football.”

Welcome to post-strike baseball. That was over 20 years ago.

“Yep, I watch ESPN in the morning and Mike & Mike on ESPN 2.”

Were you abused as a child? Nobody willingly watches that show.

    • kriskle says:

NLCS games were on TBS. Fox did Game 1 of the ALCS, and Fox Sports 1 did Games 2-6.

      • bob says:

Thanks for the clarification. I could have sworn at least one NLCS game was on Fox something after a Royals game. I guess my point was the ALCS didn’t get snubbed by the NLCS getting all Fox proper spots for games.

  5. CG says:

Lets cut to the chase baseball isn’t anywhere close to being as popular as it was in the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s before that it was like church….today its somewhere above hockey, golf and soccer, maybe boxing as well….in league with the NBA, maybe a cut above maybe not…baseball has been dying for years…the money yep its there…for now…lets be honest if your team isn’t in it…NOBODY CARES…way it is…

    • kriskle says:

Depends on how you measure “popularity.”

In 1965, the Dodgers led everybody in attendance at 2.5 million. And by a wide margin. The only other team to draw 2 million that year was the Astros in their brand new “Eighth Wonder of the World.” And they were at 2.1 million.

This year? The median attendance for all teams was 2.5 million. And 24 of the 30 teams drew 2 million.

    • Frank says:

The only reason baseball isn’t popular when your team isn’t on the field is that baseball is harder to bet on then other sports. It’s easy to bet on yards accumulated, touchdowns scored or thrown, in a game. It’s kind of hard to bet on home runs accumulated in a game. And nobody wants to wait a whole season to see if their player racked up more home runs or base hits than yours. Hell, nobody wants to wait a week, so now we have daily fantasy sports. I guarantee that if it were illegal to bet on football, or any sport, nobody outside of Chicago and Green Bay would care about the Chicago-Green Bay matchup in the regular season and the Super Bowl would be a lot less interesting. I mean, just ask the guy on the Fan Duel ad who so eloquently put it, “Fan Duel has definitely changed my Sundays, it’s made it a LOT more interesting”

  6. CG says:

I’ve been watching the ESPN coverage. Wow. Nothing on one Royals player, nothing. They don’t know or care. Some on the a couple Mets guys…not much…I think they just don’t know anything bout these guys….its unreal.

    • bob says:

ESPN doesn’t have rights to post-season baseball. They have no financial incentive to promote it. They minimized their coverage of the NHL in the same way when they lost rights to broadcast games a few years ago.

If you watched the FS1 equivalent of Sportscenter (if you can find it on your dial) they are wall to wall baseball.

Speaking of dying entities, ESPN is starting to tumble. They still have the lucrative SNF, but they are laying off people left and right. We are in a brave new world where the automatic response to watching for highlights or opinions is some dumb ESPN program or jabbering ex-jock or the other.

      • JP says:

ESPN is a behemoth, getting about $6 billion a year in subscriber fees. But people are starting to cut the cord and going a la carte on cable channels via the web. That means that the cable bundling that ESPN (and similar unloved but bundle-required channels like MSNBC) rely on to survive is starting to go away. When it does these channels’ budgets will shrink to a small fraction of their present size.

        • hou eaarley says:

and then the teamswon’t getall that tv revenue…and the
playerswon’t makethe kind of moneythey do now….
its coming folks……and right now without those
stupid reality shows and live sports…the tv is
          becoming even less and lesswatched.

  7. Furioso says:

I think baseball attendance is up because of elitism. There’s not much of a middle class anymore so the upper class goes to expensive baseball games to thumb their noses at the lower class(and also to stay away from them).

  8. Jack Springer says:

The series will be highly rated if the Mets win a couple of games. After all everyone knows it’s all about New York City in the media.

    • Frank says:

Let’s stop this woe is me crap. If the Royals win the World Series you can be upset because Mike (douche) and Mike (douche) don’t talk much about the Royals, or whoever it is that you want more talk about the Royals from. Who gives a shi*. Everyone complaining about the talk that the Royals are supposedly not getting sounds like a 2 year old kid that is upset that mom is paying more attention to their brother or sister.

  9. CFPCowboy says:

The problem is that Fox forgot to put fuel in the generators, depending on their solar array for the night game. Not only was it not mainstream Fox, but when the power went out, it wasn’t even Fox. Baseball is still a radio game. Oh, television is great, but I remember listening in rural America to the Royals of the late 709 and early 80s.

    • Frank says:

And the World Series should always be on ABC. It isn’t the same without the voice of Vin Skully or Al Michaels. With the voices and the music on Fox, I can’t tell whether I’m watching football or baseball if I don’t look at the screen. You would think that Fox could use different music for different sports.

  10. miket. says:

i wrote this yesterday in lefty’s post. i had no idea of course that part of it anyway comes close to describing game 1.

    “miket. says:

don’t think it’s it going like the ALCS, 2 W at home, 1 on the road, win in 6. i’d like to think it will.

something tells me this is going to be like that one Rocky movie (oh, they’re all the same anyway), where they go 14 rounds and both come out for the 15th wobbling, with little birdies and stars flying above their heads, barely able to lift their arms, let alone punch.”

  12. Bob says:

    10.6 rating. Highest since 2009.

    • Kriskle says:

And not only that, but Fox won the evening prime time by a long way.

but we still love the guy…….

  13. Guy Who Says What Others Think says:

Royals winning the WS isn’t going to make anyone additional care, if they don’t previously. The Royals are a regional team, nothing more. They don’t have the panache, tradition, or history to be a national team. Hey, it is what it is. Accept it, move on and enjoy the ride.

    • miket. says:

not trying to argue, i agree with but, to be fair, in most of those areas they don’t have the 100 yrs of history either. and there’ll always be an elitist sense about the original 16.

tho… some expansion teams have all that too but largely because they’re in much larger markets or markets where the national media focuses. NY being one, and so the Mets…

  14. CG says:

Great game one. By the way while the national coverage of the world series isn’t so great…the local cover is fantastic, both 610 radio and Fox local as well as metro sports on tv ch.30 all doing a great job. Well done.

THE ROYALS HAVE ALREADY PLAYED TWO BETTER TEAMS THAN THE METS, HOUSTON AND TORONTO…BOTH MORE TALENTED…THE METS ‘DO NOT MATCH UP WITH THE ROYALS’…who are much better athletes, faster, in better shape, bigger, stronger and just better ball players…SORRY WAY IT IS….THE ROYALS WILL NOT LOSE A SERIES TO THESE GUYS. WON’T HAPPEN. THEY ARE THE BEST TEAM AND THEY ARE WORLD CHAMPS…They grew into it…
