Hearne: Is the KC Star Business Section About to Become Road Kill?

CouponNut-380-4Heard on the street: that the Kansas City Star will soon eliminate its business section

Could happen.

Since ace business reporter Kevin Collison bailed a year ago – and was not replaced –  and what was left of the Business Tuesday insert went south, there hasn’t been a whole  lot of business news emanating from 18th and Grand.

For example, in today’s newspaper, what passes for its two page business section is little more than a random collection of syndicated stories and national news briefs. With little more than a singe local byline by reporter Mark Davis about Sprint duking it out with T-Mobile for No. 3 honors.

Worse yet, the lone business story on today’s front page about KC-based Hostess Brands “thriving under new ownership” – you know, Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs  and  Cupcakes – is a wire story originated by The Washington Post of all people.

As opposed to the Star’s depleted business reporting ranks here locally.

“Isn’t that just ridiculous? That’s called shared content,”says a source close to the situation. “The thing is, they’re really not covering Kansas City business anymore.

“Here’s the fact; it’s cheaper for us to buy it from somebody else than pay our reporters to write and report it.”

Left in the lurch, would be a small handful of reporters and editors – many of whom would become largely expendable if the Star pulls the plug on the section.

Star editor Mike Fannin did not return a request for confirmation or comment.

Fitz broke this story and wrote about in great detail 2 weeks ago.

Why don’t you stay in California or at least do the world a favor and blog about California. You have no business or insight talking writing about KC any more. You really just don’t know how to do anything but talk trash about people behind their back.

  2. Craig says:

How many stories about the “Sprint vs T-Mobile” duel does Mark Davis have in him? It seems like he’s written over 100 of them in the past 18 months. He needs to move on to some other topics, but I don’t blame him too much for rehashing “low-hanging fruit” with The Star as his employer.

You have little room to criticize.

      Dear Grammar,
      Tell that to Dude.

That’s not a period, it’s a partial ellipsis (as opposed to a partial eclipse). 🙂

      You’re (NOT Your) welcome.
