Glazer: Royals Limp into Record All Star Outing Behind Crazy, Strong Fan Support

Salvador+Perez+Los+Angeles+Angels+Anaheim+BSBomhi5r8hlIt’s Mike Trout and the Kansas City Royals for the American League All Star team…

That’s right, it’s a first – all but one position on the squad will be a Royals player. If it ends today. Baring a ;last minute voting attack only Eric Hosmer‘s first base slot seems a little shakey. My guess is with the Royals attendance and fan interest at a monster level, the Royals will land all eight spots.

Here they are: Eric Hosmer, Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar, Mike Moustakas, Sal Perez, Alex Gordon, Lorenzo Cain and DH Kendrys Morales.

Oh and in a fourth spot Alex Rios, just outside the top three outfielders. Alex is batting under .200. Wow.

How strange will this look on the tube?

imagesYou can add Wade Davis to the squad as well, likely making it nine Royals.

Maybe 10 if Ned Yost adds another reliever from his American League champs. And he might.

Though the Royals have the best record in the American League and a 2.5 game lead over the Twins in their division, they’ve been cold of late, scoring just over two runs a game in the last 20 games played. That’s the lowest in the league.

Starting pitching has also been a problem.

Unless you consider Chris Young an ace, we don’t have one top notch starter right now.

Our two big guns, Ace Ventura and Danny Duffy are in big trouble. Ace is just 3-6 with a 4.68 ERA and has been experiencing numbness in his hand of late. Not good.

Danny was 2-3 with an ERA of 5.87 before being sent down to the minors.

Eric Hosmer hasn’t homered in a month  – he’s stuck on seven – and only one starter, Moose, is batting over .300.

Sal Perez is the leagues top vote getter and now has 10 homers to lead the team.

But these guys can just not score or hold teams down well.

Still, they seem to be unstoppable as far as post season play.

Lately KC looks like last year’s team in mid season. No scoring, no power

However the bad news is no great starting pitching. They’re getting kind of boring again.

However they likely will live in first place all season. Somehow.

The question is this: can the Royals go deep in the post season with no top notch starters? Unless Ace and Danny may heat up later in the year.

Still KC fans are deep in love with this team.

They voted their butts off to get eight all stars.

It’s kinda funny.

Yes several of these guys should be starters but eight? Uh, no.

Still it will be fun to watch all this go down. We’ve been down so long its nice to get all this attention.

gotta have starting pitching for a deep run. definitely the royals are shaky there right now. hitting, i’m not so worried about, bats go cold. but instead of saying, here in mid-june, pre-allstar break, that the royals are out of it already, we’re still right in it despite all of that. so, while I don’t think we can stay in first the rest of the season, no reason to think we won’t bounce back and win the division.

joe posnanski wrote a good piece on “stuffing the ballot box” for kc fans:

That is good read. Especially after the whiplash I suffered through Glazier’s flip-flop ramblings.

      Thanks for sharing the link.

you bet, monarch. I know there are a lot of folks who think jopo’s writing is smarmy and all, but I like his stuff and it’s nice to be able to read him now and then.

keeping with the equine thread, he had a pretty good column a few weeks ago about the triple crown and American pharaoh.

Haters gonna hate and players gonna play. Let’s go royals. Everyone is assuming the nl well whip up on the royals. But is love to see then throw up a five spot in the first!

  3. the dude says:

I had no idea a fictional pet detective was a pitcher for the Royals. Learn something wrong every day.

    • CG says:

He sure is always finding a negative Dude. Haters are my biggest fan, hey that’s YOU.

      • the dude says:

How does pointing out an error in your ‘article’ considered finding a negative? Who at your age uses the term ‘hater’? Have you emotionally evolved past seventh grade? Apparently not.

        • grow a pair says:

What error was in the article? The Ace Ventura moniker and reference to Jim Carey’s fictional character have existed since around this time last year. So calling him Ace was no error.

Maybe the STL Cards will hack the MLB site and change the results to make the author happy.

  6. CG says:

I’ve written it one hundred times. I DON’T WRITE THE HEADLINE…the editor does..he likes controversy. The article about the Royals is overall positive. I didn’t badmouth them at all, just saying whats up. The starting pitching is suspect, they haven’t been hitting until this current series with the low level Brewers pitching. Hey I said they would win the division and will sit in first all year…they are a very good team…so calm down. Do they have 8 starting all stars for real? You decide. Hey its fun I said that…so please.

  7. CG says:

P.S. I will be on Metro Sports next week discussing the ‘Royal’ with guys like Petro. I’ll let you all know when it airs.

  8. Jim a.k.a. BWH says:

Jesus, Glaze! Enjoy the ride a little! There are NO perfect teams out there. They all have issues. The Royals have found a way to win despite having giant holes in their starting rotation and some cold hitting prior to the Brewers series. This is a team that was pegged for 4th place and 72 total wins by the PECOTA Projections in February. They are currently on pace for 94 or 95 wins. I personally think it will be more in the 88 to 90 win range, but still a damn sight better than 72!

In regards to the MLB All-Star game, when was it ever about who deserved to go? How many years was it done by the fan vote AT the stadiums? The big market teams had an enormous advantage simply due to the population of the cities they played in. Do you think Jeter was the best shortstop in the AL last year? Do you think Harold Reynolds was really a better 2nd baseman than Frank White when they were both playing? Bottom line? Who cares? It’s freaking All-Star game. If people are really outraged by all the Royals leading……..go vote! Pretty simple.

Stop and smell the roses, Glaze! Been too damn long since we’ve had a chance to.

    • CG says:

I AM MY friend, I am…I think this team will be post season material for at least the next five years..the core is solid, Sal, Eric, Moose, Escabor, Cain, Gordon,Davis….I like them being a division champ over and over and maybe back to a series soon. Pitching is always a headache…changes year to year without a big gun or two..we’ll see.

      • vhahhararley says:

glaze…only if they have some great players in minors…
or glass makes a billion this year and will spend the money
        to keep Gordon/hos/mouse/the bullpen/perez/and 1 or 2
starters…cain/and find a diaemondin the rough for right
        field
contracts are coming up in 2016 and 2017….trades will
need to be made (maybe Holland)….money will have to
be spent….and broadcast rights will HAVE TO INCREASE
DRAMATICALLY….and get them off cable tv…..glass
should buy his own tv station!!!!!!!!
yourpredicion shows you know nothng about this team…
maybe petro should team with Martha stewart talking about
royals….she knows more than you about baseball.
don’t jinx us…..kc is on fire….and you’ve been saying whata
down trodden old stodgy town this is……and you’ve
        been wrong every time.
so please….no more b.s……youre wrong everytime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • grow a pair says:

Part agree. Part disagree with you Harley. Glass has been stockpiling money over the last fifteen years. Even with the losing seasons the royals have been in the to ten in profitability from operation. So the money is actually there. Glass and the organization have publicly said as much. Now will the money be reinvested? Who knows. I tend to agree with you that it probably won’t be. Then again Glass may see the profits from having a winning team and say he is going to bump up spending.

We made our tv contract like one year to early. Like you have said. Content is king and particularly live content. We had bad luck with timing on the last go around. But you can reasonably assume that won’t be the car come renewal time.
