New Jack City: Forget the Rest, There’s Only One Oscar!

keaton-keatonIt’s that time of year again.

Time for my not so fearless predictions for Sunday’s 87th Academy Awards.

You’ll note that I only place my picks in the top six categories. And that what passes for my “reasoning” usually results in me to losing in several high stakes office pools.

Here then is the way I believe it will play out Sunday night:

* BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS-

Patricia Arquette pretty much has a lock on the category for “BOYHOOD.”

* BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR-

Another sure bet. J.K. Simmons for “WHIPLASH.

* BEST ACTRESS-

No contest here either. Julianne Moore takes home the Oscar for “STILL ALICE.”

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

* BEST ACTOR-

Bradley-Cooper-couldnt-stop-laughing-during-his-TV-stint-SpainHere’s where it gets dicey.

Michael Keaton (“BIRDMAN“) and Eddie Redmayne (“THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING“) may be splitting the vote resulting in – wait for it – Bradley Cooper taking the prize for “AMERICAN SNIPER!”

After all, doesn’t the Academy still owe Cooper one for “SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK” and “AMERICAN HUSTLE?”

On top of that, “AMERICAN SNIPER” is a box office blockbuster and Hollywood likes getting on the band wagon of supporting winners.

Having said all that, I’m still seeing the Oscar going to Michael Keaton for “BIRDMAN.”

* BEST DIRECTOR-

I would have loved to have seen the directing honors go to Clint Eastwood for “AMERICAN SNIPER.” But that’s not going to happen since he wasn’t even nominated.

Therefore, I proclaim the Best Director Oscar to go to Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “BIRDMAN.”

* BEST PICTURE-

It’ll go down this year as the battle of the B’s!

“BIRDMAN” versus “BOYHOOD.”

But when the final envelope is opened Sunday night the honors will be bestowed on “BIRDMAN: THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE.”

And please, no wagering.

    How do Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke get noms for “Boyhood” when the real acting was done by the kids? Surprised that neither one of them even got a nomination.

    my guess is that American sniper is just controversial right now.
    with the trial…the isis problems…with the insanity case…with the
    republicans looking like fools getting us involved in another
    unwinnable war….with the tension thevmovie has created..
    but he did a great job and Bradley is now off into another
    stageof his career as a real superstar.
    Would love to see him win….I’d be going freaking nuts as
    one of biggest supporters of veterans issues.
    hope he wins…because he deserves it…but outside forces
    might keep him from winning.
    And holywood is a liberal group and a war story winning
    an Oscar maynot be their thing right now. Just too much
    divisive politics.

      Just an FYI, President Obama is a democrat. I swear I just watched a news conference last week where he, a democrat, asked the Congress to give him for authorized use of military force. In 2003 I swear 86 democrats voted to authorize President Bush to use military force in Iraq. I don’t know though, I may be mistaken.

      • False Choices says:

        Actually, I was mistaken. It was 111 democrats.

      • False Choices says:

        Just to be clear, that includes:

        Secretary of State John Kerry (D)

        Former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton (D)

        Former Senate Majority Leader and current Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D)

        Former Missouri Senator Jean Carnahan (D)

        Among other Democratic Leadership.

          After being told false lies about false information from the false CIA.

          • False Choices says:

            Didn’t ILoveAmerica cover this on a story a week ago? Even provided the citations haahaharley asks for?

            Nonetheless, I don’t think the CIA is Republican or Democrat, I think its Bureaucratic

    Just saw Birdman this weekend at Cinetopia. Much better than I expected and the endless tracking shot cinematography trick sucks the viewer in…

    • jack p. says:

      David, I had a few people ask me what I made of the film’s ending.
      My answer? Whatever you WANT it to mean. It’s the perfect fantasy ending, right?
